Option 1: Insert a QR Code Reader With the Shortcodes Ultimate Plugin
One of the many plugins that enable users to embed a QR code in WordPress is the Shortcodes Ultimate plugin. This free plugin lets you create QR codes, buttons, sliders, carousels, and much more through shortcodes.
Thus, the following sub-section will teach you how to install the plugin on WordPress. I will also provide steps to use the plugin to add a QR code to your WordPress site.

Step 1: Install the Shortcodes Ultimate Plugin
- Using an admin account, log in to the backend dashboard of your WordPress website. After a successful login, hover your mouse cursor on Plugins among the menus on the dashboard’s left pane and left-click Add New.
- On the Add Plugins page, type “Shortcodes Ultimate” in the search field.
- Then, click the Install Now button of the WordPress Shortcodes Plugin — Shortcodes Ultimate from the search result.
- After successfully installing the plugin, click the Activate button to activate it on your WordPress site.
Step 2: Embed a QR Code Using the Shotcodes Ultimate Plugin
- After installing and activating the plugin on your WordPress site, ensure you are logged in to the backend dashboard as an administrator. Then, depending on where you want to add a QR code, left-click Posts or Pages on the dashboard’s left pane.
- After that, open the page/post where you want to insert a QR code by left-clicking its title. For instance, I want to add a QR code on a post titled “Hello” on my WordPress website.
- When the post/page opens, click the Add block icon (+ sign) in the area where you want to embed the QR code. Then, search for “shortcode” and select the Shortcode block from the search result.
- After that, click the Insert shortcode button on the toolbar at the top of the Shortcode block.
You won’t find the Insert shortcode button without installing and activating the Shortcodes Ultimate plugin.
- Now, select QR code from the list of shortcode options on the page that appear.
- After that, you can customize a QR code to your taste, such as adding a title and changing the color and size. However, the Data input box is where you should include the URL you want the QR code to direct users to.
- When you’ve done all that, click the Insert shortcode button at the bottom of the page. Hence, the QR code should appear on your site’s front end (live website) when the page/post is published or previewed – see the second screenshot.
Option 2: Embed a QR Code Using the Kaya QR Code Generator Plugin
Another free plugin you can use to add a QR code to your WordPress site is the Kaya QR Code Generator plugin. Similar to the Shortcodes Ultimate plugin, this plugin allows you to add a QR code through a shortcode.

- Login to the backend dashboard of your WordPress site as an administrator. After that, click Posts or Pages on the dashboard’s left pane, depending on where you want to add the QR code.
- Then, click the title of the page/post where you want to add the QR code to open it. Once again, I will open the “Hello” post on my WordPress site for this demonstration.
- When the post/page opens, scroll down to the bottom till you find the Kay QR Code Generator section.
In case the section isn’t opened, click the title (Kay QR Code Generator) of the section to open it.
- Then, you can customize a QR code under QR Code settings in the Kay QR Code Generator section. However, you should input the URL you want the QR code to direct the users to in the Content to encode in QR Code box.
- After customizing the QR code to your satisfaction, copy the shortcode in the Shortcode Generated box in the Kaya QR Code Generator section. Then, paste the generated shortcode in the area of your post/page where you wish to add the QR code.
- Consequently, if you publish or preview the post/page, the QR code should appear on your site’s front end (live website).
