Xbox privacy and online-safety controls determine who can communicate with an account, join multiplayer games, play across networks, send friend requests, follow the account, and view shared content. You can change them from an Xbox console or Xbox.com. Adult account holders can edit their own settings; a child or other family-group member generally needs a family organizer to make safety changes.
Change Xbox privacy settings on a console
The menu names below match the current Xbox privacy path documented by Microsoft and Xbox Wire. A dashboard update can move a label slightly, so look for the nearest option containing Privacy or online safety if your screen differs.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox privacy.
- Choose View details & customize.
- Open the category that matches the permission you want to change. Social controls are under Friends, followers & clubs.
- Set each permission to the available audience or action you want, then use the page’s Save or Submit command when it appears.
Settings are permission-specific. Changing a social-following option does not automatically change voice chat, multiplayer, cross-network play, or content-sharing permissions, so review each relevant category separately.

The exact grouping can differ by dashboard version, account type, and the permission Microsoft exposes for a particular game or service. These are the functions represented by the documented categories.

Choose the right audience for each permission
Many controls present choices such as Everyone, Friends, or Block. Not every permission offers all three, and some screens use a more specific action rather than an audience. Treat the choice as applying only to the activity named beside it.

A setting that says who may contact the account is different from one that says whether the account may join a multiplayer game. Set both if your goal involves both communication and play.
Adjust settings from Xbox.com
Microsoft states that Xbox privacy settings can be adjusted on either a console or Xbox.com. The web route is useful when the console is unavailable, when an organizer is managing another family member, or when a larger settings page is easier to review with a mouse and keyboard.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile on the Xbox privacy and online-safety page.
- Open the Xbox privacy controls.
- Select the details or customization view for the account.
- Change the permission category you need, such as communication, multiplayer, cross-network play, friends and followers, or content sharing.
- Use the page’s Save or Submit action if it is provided, then return to the game or console and test the specific activity.
The web interface may show a different layout from the console. Match the activity name rather than relying on the position of a switch. For example, a multiplayer restriction should be changed in the online-safety permission for joining multiplayer games, not in a general profile-visibility option.
Change privacy settings for a child or family member
Child accounts generally cannot override family safety permissions themselves. The family organizer must sign in with the organizer account and edit the member’s Xbox privacy settings.

- Open Family settings.
- Select Manage family members.
- Choose the family member whose permissions need to change.
- Open Privacy & online safety.
- Select Xbox Live privacy, then View details & customize.
- Change only the required communication, multiplayer, cross-network, social, or sharing permissions and save or submit the form.
If a child sees a disabled control, a missing option, or a message saying an organizer must approve the change, that is an account-role restriction rather than a console fault. The organizer should make the change while signed in to the organizer profile; signing out and back in with the child profile will not grant editing rights.
Enable multiplayer when a game says it is blocked
The most relevant permission is You can join multiplayer games in the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10 Online Safety controls. Microsoft Q&A identifies this permission as the setting to inspect when an account cannot play online multiplayer.
- Open the console route: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Choose Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
- Open the online-safety section labeled for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One/Windows 10.
- Find You can join multiplayer games.
- Set it to the permitted audience or action available on your account, then save or submit.
- Start the game again and test multiplayer. If the account belongs to a family group, have the organizer perform these steps from the member-management workflow.
Joining multiplayer and communicating with other players are separate permissions. If the game now allows online play but voice or text still does not work, review the communication controls as well. If the game supports cross-network sessions, check the cross-network-play permission separately.
Turn off Xbox voice or text communication
To silence or restrict communication, open the privacy customization page and locate the communication permission for voice or text interaction. Choose Block where that option is offered, or choose the narrowest audience available. Save the change before returning to the game.
- Block communication: use this when the account should not use the named voice or text channel.
- Friends-only communication: use this when the account should communicate with known friends but not with everyone in a game or network.
- Leave multiplayer enabled: communication restrictions do not necessarily prevent the account from joining a multiplayer game; treat the two permissions independently.
Because labels and grouping can vary, select the permission that explicitly names voice or text communication rather than changing a general privacy audience and assuming chat is disabled.

Turn off cross-network play
Cross-network play is controlled separately from ordinary Xbox multiplayer when the title and account expose that distinction. In View details & customize, open the online-safety or multiplayer category containing cross-network play and select Block or the most restrictive available choice. Save or submit, then relaunch the game so it evaluates the new permission.
Blocking cross-network play does not necessarily block multiplayer with other Xbox users. Conversely, allowing cross-network play does not grant permission to join multiplayer if You can join multiplayer games remains blocked. Check both controls when diagnosing a connection or matchmaking restriction.
Control friend requests, follows, and clubs
Open Friends, followers & clubs from the Xbox privacy customization screen. Xbox Wire documents this category as the place to manage who can send friend requests or follow the account. Choose the audience offered for each action and save the page.
Friend requests and follows are separate social actions. Restricting one does not automatically restrict the other, and neither setting determines whether a player can join multiplayer. Review all three areas if you are trying to reduce unsolicited contact while keeping ordinary play available.
Limit what the account shares
Privacy audience controls determine whether material shared from the account is visible to the public, friends, or another audience offered by the current interface. Microsoft documents console and Xbox.com controls that can limit or block what is shared with the public or with friends.

- Choose the narrowest audience that still supports the account holder’s intended sharing.
- Check each content-sharing permission separately; a general profile setting may not cover every type of shared activity.
- For a child account, make the change through the family organizer’s member settings rather than from the child’s profile.
Console or web: which surface should you use?

Troubleshoot settings that are missing, locked, or ineffective
The option is locked or cannot be edited
First determine the account role. A child or family-group member may require the organizer to edit the setting. Have the organizer open Family settings > Manage family members, select the member, and use the member’s Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize path.
The game still reports that multiplayer is unavailable
Return to the online-safety controls and verify You can join multiplayer games, not just a general communication setting. If the account is in a family group, confirm that the organizer changed the member’s permission. If the title uses cross-network matchmaking, inspect that permission too.
Voice chat is unavailable but multiplayer works
Multiplayer participation and communication are separate activities. Check the voice and text communication permissions and make sure they are not set to Block or to an audience that excludes the people you are trying to contact.
Cross-network matches do not appear
Check the cross-network-play permission independently of You can join multiplayer games. If cross-network play is blocked, ordinary Xbox multiplayer can still work while matches involving another network remain unavailable.

Open Friends, followers & clubs rather than communication or multiplayer settings. Adjust the specific friend-request and following audiences, then save or submit.

The menu labels do not match these instructions
Xbox dashboard versions and account types can present different groupings. Start from Profile & system > Settings > Account and look for the closest current Privacy & online safety, Xbox privacy, or Online safety label. Select the permission by its activity name and carry the change through the page’s save or submit action.
Use a permission-by-permission setup instead of one broad switch
Xbox privacy is easier to manage when each activity has an intentional audience. For example, an adult who wants open matchmaking but less unsolicited contact can allow multiplayer, set communication to friends, and restrict friend requests or follows. A child profile can use organizer-managed limits for multiplayer, communication, cross-network play, and sharing independently, rather than receiving an unnecessarily broad block.
When creating or reviewing a setup, work through this checklist:

- Decide whether the account may join multiplayer games.
- Decide whether cross-network sessions are permitted.
- Set who may send friend requests and who may follow the account.
- Choose the audience for shared content.
- For a family member, verify that the organizer—not the child profile—made the change.
- Save or submit, then test the exact activity that prompted the change.
Keep the settings accurate after dashboard updates
Microsoft’s official support pages and Xbox Wire describe the current privacy workflow, but Xbox dashboard labels can change. When an update rearranges the menus, use the activity named by the error or goal—such as You can join multiplayer games, communication, cross-network play, or Friends, followers & clubs—as the anchor for finding the setting. Avoid assuming that a similarly worded profile-visibility option controls gameplay or chat.
As of the documented October 18, 2026 guidance, the dependable starting points are the console’s Profile & system > Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety path and the Xbox.com privacy surface. The choices available inside those pages can vary by account and dashboard version.
