The reliable way to protect a digital game library is layered backup: use each platform’s cloud-save feature where available, keep independent local copies of save and configuration folders, make local copies of reinstallable game files when the platform supports it, and secure the account that grants access to your purchases. Cloud synchronization alone can fail, overwrite a newer save, or be unavailable for a particular title; a local copy alone does not protect you from drive failure, theft, or account takeover.
What a game-library backup actually protects
A digital purchase has several separate parts, and each needs a different protection method.
- License and ownership: The storefront account records that you bought or claimed the game. A file copy does not transfer ownership or bypass digital-rights checks. You normally need the original account to download, activate, or restore a title.
- Installed game files: These are the large files that make up the playable installation. Re-downloading them is possible when the store still offers the game, but a local copy can save time and bandwidth.
- Save data: Progress, characters, settings, and profile statistics may live in a cloud service, on the console, or in a folder on a PC. Save support differs by title.
- Configuration and custom content: Mods, custom maps, controller layouts, screenshots, and other files are often outside the platform’s standard game backup.
- Account access: If someone takes over the account, they can block access to the library even when your backup drive is intact.
A complete plan therefore has at least one synchronized copy, one independent local copy, and strong account security. Keep an external copy disconnected after it finishes so ransomware or an accidental deletion cannot immediately reach it.

Before copying anything, list each storefront or launcher you use, the email address attached to it, and the games whose saves matter. Record whether each title is installed on a PC, console, or external drive and whether it has a cloud-save indicator. The inventory prevents a common failure: backing up one launcher while forgetting a second one with a different save location.

Record the files that cloud services usually miss
- PC save folders for every launcher, including games that are not delivered through Steam.
- Configuration files, key bindings, profiles, screenshots, mods, custom maps, and Workshop or community content that you cannot easily recreate.
- Notes about unusual save locations, such as a folder under Documents, AppData, a launcher-specific directory, or a game’s own installation folder.
Use a dated folder for each backup, such as Game-Library-Backup-2026-10-18. Include a plain-text note listing the account needed to restore each platform. Never store the only copy inside the same internal drive that holds the original files.
Steam: combine local game backups, cloud saves, and account protection
Make a Steam local backup
Valve’s Steam Support describes a built-in backup for eligible Steam-delivered game files. In the Steam client:
- Open Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Backup game files.
- Choose a destination on an external HDD or SSD and create the backup.
The feature is intended for the game’s delivered files. Valve warns that games using third-party installers or downloaders may not work with it. Test a backup by restoring it to a spare installation or a noncritical game before treating it as your recovery copy.
Copy Steam saves and custom files separately
A successful game-file backup is not automatically a complete personal backup. For Valve games, saves, custom multiplayer maps, configurations, and other custom files are not necessarily included. Copy those folders separately, and do the same for any title that uses a third-party launcher or stores data outside the standard installation. Preserve the folder structure when possible so that restoring the files is straightforward.
Understand what Steam Cloud does—and does not do
Valve describes Steam Cloud as storage hosted by Steam that games and the platform can use for supported settings, saves, profile statistics, and other user data. Support is configured by each game; the Steam Cloud indicator on a store page is a useful starting check, not a guarantee that every file you care about is synchronized.

Cloud data can become stale when a PC is offline. Playing without a connection may create a newer local save, while another device still has an older cloud copy. When Steam reports a conflict, stop and compare timestamps before choosing which version to keep. Valve’s support guidance says lost cloud data may not be recoverable and that it generally cannot resolve a cloud conflict for you. An independent local copy is the safeguard against both outcomes.
Do not confuse local-network transfer with backup
Steam’s local-network transfer can move game content from one PC to another and reduce download time. It is a migration shortcut, not a backup: it excludes local saves, configuration files, Workshop files, Steam Cloud files, and shader files. After using it, copy your saves and settings separately and retain the original source until the destination launches correctly.
Secure the Steam account that unlocks the library
Enable Steam Guard two-factor authentication. Use a strong, unique password that is not reused on email or another gaming service, and secure the email account linked to Steam with its own two-factor authentication. Review authorized devices and sign out everywhere if an unfamiliar session appears.
Steam warns users never to give out their password, click unknown links, or follow requests from people claiming to be Steam Support in chat services. Treat an unexpected login prompt or trade confirmation as suspicious; deny it, change the password from the official client or site, and review the account’s recovery details.
PlayStation 5: keep a dedicated console-backup drive
Use the correct kind of USB storage
PlayStation’s PS5 backup process writes saved data and other console backup data to a USB storage device. Keep a drive reserved and labeled for backups, and check that it has enough free space before starting. Restoring to another PS5 requires the same account that created the backup.

Do not assume that a USB extended-storage drive for installed games can also hold a PS5 console backup. PlayStation specifies different formats for these functions, so an extended-storage game drive cannot serve as the console-backup drive. If you need both capacities, use separate devices or reformat only after moving anything you still need.
Create and restore the backup safely
- Connect the backup-designated USB drive directly to the PS5 and confirm that the console recognizes it.
- Open the PS5 system settings and choose the system backup and restore area, then start a full backup.
- Leave the console powered and the drive connected until the process reports completion; do not unplug it during the write.
- Label the drive with the backup date and the account used to create it.
- For a replacement console, sign in with that same account, connect the drive, and use the restore option. Verify that the restored saves load before deleting any original copy.
A USB copy protects against console failure, but it does not change the account requirement for purchased games. Keep the account credentials and recovery email available alongside the physical backup.
Nintendo Switch: prevent cloud-save overwrites during a console change
Check the cloud timestamp before launching a game
When moving between Switch consoles, the save on the second console and the cloud copy can differ. Nintendo documents that downloading the newest cloud backup before starting the game on the second console avoids many accidental overwrites. If the console presents two versions, stop and compare their timestamps; deliberately choose which copy should replace the other.
An overwrite cannot be undone through the documented workflow. Do not confirm a replacement until you are certain the selected version contains the progress you want to keep.
Use the same Nintendo Account for a nearby transfer
Console-to-console transfer requires the same Nintendo Account to be linked to a user on both systems. Confirm the account association before beginning, keep both consoles powered, and follow the on-screen transfer sequence. A transfer moves user data; it does not remove the need to understand which cloud save is newest.

Choose external storage for recoverability, not marketing claims
An external USB HDD generally offers more capacity per dollar, while an SSD is faster, quieter, and more resistant to movement. Either can hold PC save folders and Steam game backups when the file system and capacity meet the platform’s requirements. For PS5, compatibility depends on whether the device is being used for console backup or extended game storage; those roles use different formats.
- Choose enough free space for the largest planned backup plus growth. A drive that is nearly full is difficult to version and easy to interrupt.
- Use a cable and enclosure that remain stable during long writes. Avoid hubs that disconnect under load.
- Label the drive’s purpose and date. Do not reformat a backup device for another console without verifying that the old copy exists elsewhere.
- Disconnect the drive after the backup and store it away from the gaming device. This limits exposure to ransomware, power faults, and accidental deletion.
Storage protects files, not licenses. Reinstalling a game may still require the original storefront account, an online check, or the publisher’s launcher.
A practical backup routine that works across platforms
- Inventory: List every storefront, launcher, account email, installed title, save location, and custom-content folder.
- Enable supported cloud saves: Turn on each platform’s cloud feature and check individual game support rather than assuming all titles participate.
- Create dated local copies: Copy PC saves, configuration files, mods, screenshots, and other custom content. Separately create platform-native game-file backups where available.
- Keep an offline external copy: Store at least one copy on a USB HDD or SSD, then disconnect it after completion.
- Test recovery: Restore a noncritical game or save to a spare installation. Confirm that the game starts, the save appears, and the required account can activate the title.
- Prepare for a console move: Synchronize or download the newest cloud save before playing on the new console. Read every overwrite warning and check timestamps.
- Review security: Keep unique passwords, Steam Guard or equivalent two-factor authentication, recovery-email access, and an accurate authorized-device list. Repeat the review after changing an email address, phone, or device.

Troubleshoot the failures that cause most lost progress
Steam says a cloud conflict exists
Do not choose randomly. Note the local and cloud timestamps, identify which machine contains the latest intentional progress, and make a copy of both versions before selecting one. After synchronization completes, launch the game and verify the save in-game.
The Steam backup restores but progress is missing
The backup likely contained game files but not the save or custom content. Close the game, copy the separately preserved save and configuration folders into the correct locations, and check whether a third-party launcher keeps its own profile directory.

Check that the drive is connected directly, has sufficient free space, and is reserved for the console-backup format. A drive configured as USB extended storage for installed games is not interchangeable with the PS5 backup device.

The Switch offers to overwrite a save
Cancel the prompt, check which console and cloud copy has the newest timestamp, and download the desired cloud version before starting the game. Confirm the same Nintendo Account is linked on both consoles if you are transferring data.
An unfamiliar login appears
Change the affected account password from the official client, sign out other sessions, inspect authorized devices, and secure the linked email account. Enable two-factor authentication before downloading or restoring anything. Do not respond to chat messages requesting passwords, codes, or unknown links.
How often to back up
Run a local save-and-configuration copy after a long play session, before changing hardware, and before installing major mods or updates. Create a fresh game-file backup when a title is difficult or slow to redownload. For consoles, make a USB backup before repair, sale, factory reset, or migration. Keep multiple dated versions when a game’s saves are especially valuable; a single newest copy can preserve a mistake or corruption.
