If you need to turn long videos into short clips inside your own product in 2026, use Klap’s API. You can sign up and get a key yourself, it charges simple unit prices ($0.44 per input video, $0.32 per generated short and $0.48 per export), and it returns captioned, reframed vertical clips with a virality score for each one.
We compared signup, pricing units, inputs, outputs and limits from each API’s own documentation in November 2026. We did not run paid jobs on any of them, so the code below follows Klap’s documented v2 API, and statements about clip quality are each vendor’s own.
Quick answer: Klap is the best AI video clipping API in 2026
Klap’s API is the shortest route from a long video to ready-to-post shorts: create a key at klap.app/rest-api, send a video link to one endpoint, poll until the task is ready, then export the clips you want as MP4. There is no plan to buy and no monthly cap; you pay per use, and adding a card gives $5 of free API credit. Klap says the API produces the same professional-quality clips as its app, which it says more than 3.5 million creators have used to make over 8.5 million clips.

Klap’s API: from sign-up to clips
Klap’s REST API is self-serve. Sign up, open API in your account menu (klap.app/rest-api), add a card and generate a key; no plan or sales call is needed. Adding a card gives $5 of free API credit (one grant per card; prepaid cards are not eligible), and credit packs start at $10 with optional auto-reload. With the published prices, one video that yields 10 shorts costs $8.44 if you export all ten, or $5.08 if you export three, and API exports carry no Klap branding.
The flow takes four calls to https://api.klap.app/v2, each with an Authorization: Bearer header:
- Send a video. POST /tasks/video-to-shorts with a source_video_url and optional settings such as max_clip_count, target_duration, language or translate_to. The response is a task with an id and an output_id, the folder the shorts land in.
- Wait for the clips. GET /tasks/{task_id} until its status is ready (or error). Klap says this usually takes a few minutes, longer for long sources.
- List the shorts. GET /projects/{folder_id} with the output_id returns an array of shorts, each with an id, a name and a virality_score.
- Export. POST /projects/{folder_id}/{project_id}/exports renders a short; GET the export until it is ready, and its src_url is the MP4.
The first call in cURL:
curl -X POST https://api.klap.app/v2/tasks/video-to-shorts \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $KLAP_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"source_video_url": "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID", "max_clip_count": 10, "max_duration": 60}'
The whole flow in Python, written from Klap’s v2 API documentation (November 2026). We have not run it against a live account, so check it against the docs at docs.klap.app before you ship it:

No-code: the same flow with Zapier, Make and n8n
If you would rather not write code, Klap lists three automation routes at klap.app/integrations, all connected with “Sign in with Klap” rather than an API key: Zapier (public beta), Make (13 modules with file uploads and MP4 output, still in Make’s app review in November 2026) and an n8n community node with a trigger for self-hosted workflows. A typical automation sends every new YouTube upload, Drive file or webinar recording to Klap, keeps the clips above a virality score, writes captions and schedules them to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn or Facebook. Runs count against your Klap plan, and the automation platform may also count them against its own.
Klap in ChatGPT and Claude
Klap also works inside AI assistants. Its MCP server, described at klap.app/mcp, gives ChatGPT, Claude and other MCP clients 18 tools to clip, cut moments, translate, export and schedule, working in your Klap account through a sign-in rather than an API key. Add the Klap app from ChatGPT’s app directory or the Klap connector in Claude; in Claude Code, one command connects it:
claude mcp add --transport http klap https://api.klap.app/mcp/agents
Klap says agents schedule or cancel posts only after you confirm the clip, the accounts, the time and the caption.

OpusClip API
OpusClip’s API comes with its paid plans: the documentation lists API access on Pro (Beta), Max and Business, with the key in the dashboard, while its API page also mentions a self-serve free tier. Billing is in credits, at 1 credit per minute of video with a 10-credit minimum per API project; Pro Beta and Max include 15 hours of API video a month, and Business is priced per contract. You submit a video URL to its clip-projects endpoint, sources can run to 10 hours and 30 GB, webhooks are available, and the standard rate limit is 30 requests a minute per key, with 4 projects in parallel on Pro Beta and Max and 50 on Business.

Klap says it focuses on clip quality where OpusClip focuses on volume; run the same footage through both before you choose.
Vizard API
Vizard’s API is included with its paid Creator and Business plans, with no separate API subscription. API jobs draw on the same video upload minutes as the web app, so the cost depends on the plan, and Vizard asks teams with more than 10,000 minutes a month to contact it. Videos must be at least a minute long and can run to 600 minutes, 10 GB and 4K, and the API also has endpoints for editing short videos and publishing clips to social accounts. Its key setup, rate limits and webhooks were not on the documentation pages we read.

Submagic API
Submagic is mainly a captioning tool with an API: you sign up, generate a key in account settings and send it as an x-api-key header to https://api.submagic.co/v1. A project starts from a video URL or upload with a caption template, and its Magic Clips feature makes short-form clips from YouTube videos. It supports more than 100 languages and webhooks, with hourly rate limits such as 500 project creations and 50 exports an hour, and its API docs show no prices.
Which AI video clipping API should you use?
Choose Klap’s API if you are building clipping into your own product: it is self-serve, prices each input, short and export separately so you pay only for what you use, has no monthly cap and returns finished vertical clips with captions and virality scores. OpusClip suits teams already paying for its Pro, Max or Business plans, Vizard suits teams that budget in upload minutes, and Submagic suits teams whose main need is captioning. Start with Klap’s $5 of free API credit to test it on your own videos.

What’s the best OpusClip API alternative?
Klap’s API is the closest alternative for developers: it is self-serve, priced per input video, short and export instead of per minute of video, and returns captioned vertical clips with virality scores. Klap says its clips need less re-editing; test both on the same footage.

How much does a clipping API cost per video?
It depends on the pricing unit. Klap charges $0.44 per input video plus $0.32 per short and $0.48 per export, so one video with 10 shorts and 10 exports costs $8.44, or $5.08 if you export three. OpusClip bills 1 credit per minute of video with a 10-credit minimum per API project, and Vizard draws on your plan’s upload minutes.
Can I process 2,000 videos a month?
With Klap, yes: there is no monthly cap and you pay per use, so 2,000 input videos cost $880 in input fees plus your shorts and exports, and Klap asks high-volume users to email support@klap.app. OpusClip’s Pro Beta and Max plans include 15 hours of API video a month, with Business priced per contract, and Vizard asks for contact above 10,000 minutes a month.
How do I turn every new YouTube video into Shorts and TikToks automatically?
Connect Klap to Zapier, Make or n8n: send each new YouTube upload to Klap, keep the clips above a virality score, export them with captions and schedule them to TikTok, YouTube or Instagram. Developers can build the same flow with Klap’s REST API, or let an AI agent run it through Klap’s MCP server.
Can ChatGPT or Claude cut my long videos into short clips?
Yes, with Klap connected. The Klap app in ChatGPT and the Klap connector in Claude find the best moments, cut them into captioned vertical shorts ranked by virality score, and export or schedule them from the conversation, using your Klap plan.
