Over the years, ASUS has gained a lot of popularity with its upgraded mainstream VivoBook lineup. Packed with a lot of exciting features, the VivoBook Flip 14 makes a place for itself among other competitors in the mid-range category.
This laptop tries so hard to beat its main competitor – the Lenovo Yoga 520 which seems to get more attention. However, the $479.99 starting price (in February 2022) of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 gives it a chance of gaining more acceptance.
Can the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 actually beat the Lenovo Yoga 520? Read on to find out.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Design, Dimension, and Weight
The VivoBook Flip 14 might not deliver the same craftsmanship and build quality as the more expensive ASUS ZenBook Flip 14. However, it has a lot of rigidity and design aesthetics up its sleeves.
To give more details, the construction and design of this laptop’s exterior are pleasant. Although the entire chassis except the lid is made of plastic, it does not feel cheap.
Speaking of the lid, it is made of aluminum metal with a shiny silver ASUS logo at the center. Moreover, the sleek and textured aluminum lid of this laptop gives it a premium appearance.
Apart from its sleek-looking lid, another outstanding thing about the VivoBook 14’s design is its flexibility. Specifically, the laptop’s two hinges make it possible for you to rotate the display up to 360 degrees.
This is actually expected due to the fact that the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 is a convertible laptop. However, the flexibility and how seamless the laptop’s hinges rotate are very impressive.a
Hence, you can convert the laptop to a tablet for scrolling through web pages or viewing slideshows and movies.
Having talked about the lid and hinges, let’s proceed to discuss the display of the laptop. To begin with, when you open the laptop’s aluminum lid, you will be greeted by a 14-inch touchscreen display.
The bezels surrounding the display are pretty slim, especially on the sides, which is essential in reducing the laptop’s footprint. Furthermore, the top bezel houses a 720p HD resolution webcam with no IR sensor for facial recognition.
However, the camera delivers decent performance for video conference calls and taking selfies.
That said, the laptop’s 14-inch touchscreen display is available in both HD (1366 x 768) and FHD (1920 x 1080) resolutions. It is worth mentioning that this review is based on the VivoBook Flip 14 with an FHD (1920 x 1080) display resolution.
In terms of performance, the picture quality of the laptop’s display is decent but not exceptional. However, there are some of its competitors in the same category that fared even worse.
Sadly, the maximum brightness of the display is 221 nits, which means it doesn’t get very bright. As a matter of fact, the display’s maximum brightness is less than the 231 nits category average for mainstream laptops.
Therefore, you can only use the VivoBook Flip 14 under the open sky if the sun doesn’t shine too bright. This is because the dim display might be less legible under direct sunlight.
Another factor that makes this display unsuitable for outdoor usage under direct sunlight is its reflective surface. To be more specific, this laptop’s display comes with a glossy coating that doesn’t handle reflections well.
On a positive note, ASUS equips the VivoBook Flip 14’s display with an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel for wide viewing angles. Thus, the content on the display can be viewed from any angle without losing quality.
Moving on to the laptop’s deck, you will find a chiclet-style backlit keyboard. The backlight of this keyboard has three brightness levels and you can switch between them using the two function keys.
Furthermore, the keyboard’s keys are small, feel soft, and have a short key travel of 1 mm. For clarity, key travel is the distance between the resting point and the fully pressed position of a key.
Hence, with such short key travel, people who have to type a lot might not be comfortable using this VivoBook Flip 14’s keyboard. Nevertheless, the keyboard is “okay” for casual typing.
As for the touchpad, it is multitouch-enabled and can be found under the keyboard. Also, the touchpad is quite large, measuring 105 x 73 mm.
Hence, there is sufficient space for users to carry out any multitouch gestures like pinch-to-zoom. Besides, the touchpad has a smooth surface that makes finger-gliding and performing multitouch gestures seamless.
However, just like the keyboard’s keys, the touchpad’s integrated click buttons have short key travel.
Interestingly, there is a fingerprint reader on the touchpad, at the upper right corner. Moreover, the fingerprint reader works well for biometric login via Windows Hello.
Moving to the ports, the left side of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 houses one USB 2.0 Type-A port, an SD card reader, and a Kensington lock. Meanwhile, the right side features one USB 3.2 Type-A port, one USB 3.2 Type-C port, a microphone/headphone combo jack, and an HDMI port.
However, this laptop lacks an Ethernet port and a Thunderbolt.
Having talked about the design features of this laptop, let us proceed to its size and weight. In that regard, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 is far from heavy, weighing just 1600 g.
Hence, truly the VivoBook Flip 14 is a “burdenless laptop” as ASUS advertised it to be.
For dimension, this laptop is only 19 mm thick with a full dimension of 327 x 227 x 19 mm (W x D x H). In comparison, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 is lighter and smaller than the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1.
To be more specific, the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 2-in-1 measures 327.66 x 233.68 x 20.32 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 1740 g.
All in all, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 an eight out of ten for its decent design and lightweight.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Processor (CPU) Performance
ASUS equipped the VivoBook Flip 14 with a 4-core Intel Core i7-8550U processor. This processor has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.0 GHz.
For clarity, a 4-core processor is a type that has four cores on its chip. Therefore, this processor guarantees speedier performance than a dual-core or single-core processor.
In addition to its four cores, this laptop’s processor has 8 MB of cache memory. Performance-wise, with this processor, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 can handle simple and demanding tasks like video editing, web browsing, and word processing.
To further unravel the CPU performance of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14, we will now consider its result in a Cinebench R15 test. The Cinebench R15 benchmark test measures how well a laptop’s processor performs under an immense workload.
Moreover, the Cinebench R15 benchmark test does this by evaluating the computer’s processor cores. Hence, the Cinebench R15 offers two results – the single-core and the multi-core test results.
Firstly, the single-core test discloses the performance of the processor with only one of its cores in use. Meanwhile, the multi-core test discloses the performance of the processor when all of its cores are in use.
Moreover, it is important to note that a high score means better performance on this benchmark test.
So, according to the Cinebench R15 test result, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 scored 187 points in the single-core test. Meanwhile, in the multi-core test, the laptop scored 430 points.
Comparatively, the VivoBook Flip 14 performed better than the HP Pavilion x360 14 which scored 127 points in the single-core test. Also, this HP laptop scored 332 points in the Cinebench R15 multi-core test.
It is worth mentioning that the HP Pavilion x360 14 features an Intel Core i5-7200U processor.
All things considered, I rate the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 an eight out of ten for its powerful processor performance.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Memory (RAM) Performance
The ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 features a DDR4 memory type with a standard memory size of 4 GB RAM. However, this laptop does not limit you to 4 GB of RAM, you can upgrade the memory up to 16 GB.
Meanwhile, this laptop features two memory slots with one soldered to the motherboard. Therefore, you can only upgrade the laptop’s memory using the second unsoldered slot.
For perspective, let us consider the multitasking ability of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 with its standard RAM size. Specifically, with 4GB of RAM, this laptop should be able to comfortably open a dozen Chrome tabs without lagging.
Also, switching between the Chrome tabs should be very easy for the laptop and it should slow down a bit.
For more insight about the laptop’s memory performance, let us discuss its result in a PCMark 10 benchmark test. This benchmark test tool evaluates the memory performance of a computer by simulating daily computing tasks like web browsing.
Similar to the other benchmark tests discussed in this review, a higher score denotes better performance on the PCMark 10 test.
Thus, based on the test results, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 scored 5214 points. Comparatively, this laptop’s score is well above the 4678 points scored by the Lenovo IdeaPad flex 5 14.
Likewise, the Acer Spin 3 also performed below the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14, scoring 3612 points on the PCMark 10 test.
In conclusion, the memory performance of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 is impressive. Hence, it merits a score of nine out of ten in this section.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Storage Options and Performance
In terms of storage, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 comes with multiple storage options.
Firstly, the laptop is available with an M.2 NVMe SATA SSD that supports a 512 GB maximum storage capacity. Secondly, it is available with a SATA 5400RPM 2.5″ HDD that supports a 2 TB maximum storage capacity.
Finally, there is a SATA 5400RPM 2.5″ Hybrid SSHD option that supports 1 TB maximum storage capacity. The focus model in this review is the VivoBook Flip 14 with 512 GB M.2 NVMe SATA SSD.
In my opinion, 512 GB of storage space should be enough for most users, but I can’t say the same for storage-hungry users. Therefore, if you are a storage-hungry user, you might want to purchase the laptop with the HDD option that supports a max storage size of 2 TB.
That said, to determine the speed of the VivoBook Flip 14’s SATA SSD storage, I will now highlight its CrystalDiskMark test results. The purpose of this benchmark test is to measure a storage drive’s ability by determining its write and read speed.
For more understanding, when you open a file, it is described as “read”. On the other hand, when you save a file, it is described as “write”.
Therefore, read and write speed means how fast a storage drive can open and save files. Moreover, on the CrystalDiskMark benchmark test, a high “MB/s” value indicates good storage performance, and fast read and write speed.
Hence, from the benchmark test result, the VivoBook Flip 14 has 1201.58 MB/s read speed and 529.33 MB/s write speed. Comparatively, the HONOR MagicBook 14 which also uses an SSD storage type offers better performance.
To give more details, on the CrystalDiskMark test, the HONOR MagicBook 14 delivered 2591 MB/s read speed and 2133 MB/s write speed.
After carefully considering the storage options and performance of the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14, I rate it an eight in this section.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Graphics Card Performance
Similar to the storage, ASUS offers plenty of graphics options for the VivoBook Flip 14. Firstly, there is an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 graphics option with 300 MHz base frequency, 1000 MHz boost frequency, and no dedicated VRAM.
Secondly, you have the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 930MX graphics option with 1109 MHz base frequency and 1189 MHz boost frequency. Moreover, as a dedicated graphics card, this graphics card has a 2 GB GDDR3 dedicated VRAM.
Lastly, there is the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce MX130 graphics option with a 952 MHz base frequency and 1020 MHz boost frequency. As with the other dedicated graphics option, this graphics card has a 2 GB GDDR5 dedicated VRAM.
However, in this review, we will be focusing on the VivoBook Flip 14 with the integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. You should note that this integrated GPU is not as powerful as the other dedicated GPU options.
This is because it lacks a dedicated VRAM. Hence, it is only suitable for light graphics tasks.
Likewise, for gaming, this GPU can only attain playable frame rates around 30 fps when playing low-end games. By this, I mean games like The Sims 4, Farming Simulator 2017, and Team Fortress 2.
Using a 3DMark 11 benchmark performance test, let’s get more insight into the graphics ability of the VivoBook Flip 14. Before proceeding, the 3DMark 11 test evaluates the 2D and 3D graphics rendering abilities of a computer.
Furthermore, on this test, a high score portrays a better graphics performance. Thus, based on the 3DMark 11 test result, the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 scored 1424 points.
Compared with the Lenovo Yoga 510 which uses an integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 graphic card, this ASUS laptop underperformed. To be more specific, on the 3DMark 11 test, the Lenovo Yoga 510 scored 1643 points.
In conclusion, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 an eight out of ten in this graphics card review section. This rating is based on the fact that the laptop offers multiple graphics card options.
ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TP410UA: Battery Life and Performance
A 3-cell 42 WHrs Li-ion battery powers the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14. However, ASUS did not disclose the battery life of this laptop.
Nevertheless, a battery rundown test performed by notebookcheck.com revealed the battery life of the laptop. To give more details, the battery rundown test involves the laptop being put in power-saving mode and Wi-Fi was turned off.
Also, a locally stored HD video was looped on the laptop while its screen brightness is at 50% and volume was at 100%. So, at the end of the battery test, the VivoBook Flip 14 delivered a battery life of 7 hours and 23 minutes.
Sadly, this laptop’s battery life isn’t up to par with the category average of 8 hours. Also, compared to the HP Envy x360 which delivered a battery life of 12 hours, this ASUS laptop has poor battery life.
As a result, I will rate the ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 a seven out of ten in this battery review section.
