srchui.dll is the Search Assistant UI component from Microsoft Search Companion, an old Windows feature primarily associated with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that srchui.dll is missing, the problem is usually an obsolete application reference rather than a missing modern Windows runtime.

Do not download a loose copy of the DLL and place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. First identify which program is requesting it and whether the error appears inside an old Microsoft Access database, an XP installation, or a legacy application.

What srchui.dll is

Microsoft describes Search Companion as an Explorer search interface. Its user-interface library is named srchui.dll, and the expected directory on systems that included it is:

%SystemRoot%srchasstsrchui.dll

That normally expands to:

C:Windowssrchasstsrchui.dll

The file is published by Microsoft and is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, graphics-driver file, or general-purpose DLL for games.

The component belongs mainly to:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Server 2003

It is separate from the later Windows Search stack used by Windows Vista and newer releases. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally install Search Companion or use srchui.dll as part of their built-in search interface.

Microsoft’s Windows Server 2003 Search Companion documentation places Search Companion files under %SystemRoot%srchasst.

Identify the file and your Windows version

Before changing files, check the operating system and the exact program showing the error.

Press Windows + R, type:

winver

and press Enter. Note whether the computer is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 10, or Windows 11.

Then record:

  1. The complete error message.
  2. The program that displays it.
  3. The path named in the message, if any.
  4. Whether the error appears during startup or only when opening a document.
  5. Whether Search opens as a blank pane on an XP computer.

File identification

Item Verified information
File srchui.dll
Description Search Assistant UI
Component Microsoft Search Companion
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Normal path %SystemRoot%srchasstsrchui.dll
Architecture Known documented copies are 32-bit
Main operating systems Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
Windows 10/11 status Not part of the normal modern Windows Search stack

Various file indexes report 32-bit entries such as 5.2.3790.3959, 1.0.0.5325, 1.0.0.2714, and similar versions. Treat those listings as identification clues, not as an official Microsoft compatibility table. The correct version depends on the original Windows edition, language, and service-pack source.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

The wording alone does not prove that the file is missing from Windows.

Common messages include:

The program can't start because srchui.dll is missing from your computer.
This application failed to start because srchui.dll was not found.
Error loading srchui.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The file 'srchui.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt.

An old Access database may instead report:

Your Microsoft Office Access database or project contains a missing or broken reference to the file 'srchui.dll' version 1.0.

Use this initial distinction:

  • Windows XP and Search Companion is blank or unavailable: repair Search Companion.
  • Windows 10 or 11 and an old Access database reports the file: inspect the VBA references before replacing anything.
  • A legacy application requests the file at startup: repair or reinstall that application, then check whether it was designed for XP.
  • The error began after malware removal: inspect quarantine history and scan the computer.
  • Several Windows components are failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

Fix 1: Repair Search Companion on Windows XP

This is the most direct fix when the computer really is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 and Explorer Search is blank, missing its controls, or reports that srchui.dll cannot be loaded.

You need administrative access and matching Windows installation media or a valid I386 source.

Reinstall Search Companion

  1. Log on with an administrator account.
  2. Press Windows + R.
  3. Enter:

text
%SystemRoot%Inf

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find srchasst.inf.
  3. Right-click srchasst.inf.
  4. Select Install.
  5. Insert the matching Windows XP installation disc if Windows requests files.
  6. If prompted for a source, select the correct I386 folder or service-pack source.
  7. Restart the computer.

Microsoft’s Search Companion repair guidance describes this installation-information-file method.

The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, and service-pack level as closely as possible. A mismatched source can leave the installation incomplete or replace related files with an incompatible revision.

Check whether it worked

After restarting:

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Press Windows + F, or choose the Search command from Explorer.
  3. Confirm that the Search Companion pane displays its controls.
  4. Check that the file exists at:

text
%SystemRoot%srchasstsrchui.dll

If srchasst.inf is missing, or Setup repeatedly asks for files that are not available, do not substitute a random DLL. Use matching original media or proceed to the system-file repair options below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Register the XP component only when appropriate

regsvr32 is not a universal solution for missing DLL errors. It is relevant here only to the older Search Companion component on Windows XP or Server 2003, particularly when the Search pane is blank but the file is already present.

Open an administrator Command Prompt and run:

regsvr32 /i "%windir%srchasstsrchui.dll"

On Windows XP, a successful registration message indicates that the registration operation completed. Restart Windows and test Search Companion again.

If the command reports that the module could not be found, that can mean either that srchui.dll is absent or that one of its dependencies is missing. Registration does not restore missing files. In that situation, reinstall Search Companion through srchasst.inf instead.

Do not run this command against an arbitrary copy downloaded from the internet, and do not use it as a routine fix on Windows 10 or Windows 11. The historical XP procedure is documented in archived Search Companion repair guidance, but the installation-information-file repair is the safer first step.

Fix 3: Remove a stale Access reference

A missing srchui.dll message that appears only when opening an old Microsoft Access database often does not mean the Windows file needs to be installed.

Older databases can retain a reference to an XP-era component. On Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10, or Windows 11, Access may mark that reference as missing even though the database does not use Search Companion functionality.

Inspect the reference

  1. Open the database while holding Shift if necessary to bypass startup macros.
  2. Press Alt + F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
  3. Select Tools.
  4. Choose References.
  5. Find an entry marked MISSING, especially one referring to srchui.dll.
  6. Check the database’s forms, reports, modules, and startup features before removing it.

If the project does not use the reference:

  1. Clear the check box beside the missing reference.
  2. Click OK.
  3. In the Visual Basic Editor, choose Debug.
  4. Select Compile.
  5. Fix any genuine compile errors that appear.
  6. Save the database.
  7. Close and reopen it.
  8. Test the forms, reports, macros, and other features that matter.

If the database fails after the reference is removed, restore the reference state and have the database code reviewed. Do not install an XP system DLL into a modern Windows directory simply to silence an unused Access reference.

An archived Access broken-reference discussion describes this type of compatibility problem.

Fix 4: Repair corrupted Windows components

Use system repair commands when srchui.dll is only one of several Windows files reporting errors, or when the problem began after system corruption, an interrupted update, or malware removal.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:

text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application again.

Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker.

Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not fix some files, restart and run it once more. Persistent failures require examining the CBS log, using Windows recovery options, or repairing Windows rather than copying a DLL manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running these commands is safe, but the manual process can involve waiting through long scans and repeating repairs without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show its free scan’s findings and the full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace the official DISM and SFC path.

Windows XP

Windows XP supports:

sfc /scannow

Open Start, choose Run, type:

cmd

and press Enter. At the Command Prompt, run the command and provide matching Windows media if requested.

Windows XP does not support the newer DISM repair workflow used by Windows 10 and Windows 11. If XP cannot restore the file, reinstall Search Companion with srchasst.inf or use matching installation media for a broader repair.

Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates

An update can repair protected Windows components, but Windows Update will not normally add Search Companion to a modern Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Click Check for updates.
  6. Install available updates.
  7. Restart when requested.
  8. Check for updates again after restarting.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Return to Windows Update and check again.

If a legacy program still requests srchui.dll after Windows is fully updated, the program is probably carrying an obsolete dependency. Repair or reinstall that program, check for a newer compatible release, or run it only in an appropriate legacy environment.

Fix 6: Check malware quarantine and recent changes

Search Companion files can be damaged by malware cleanup, aggressive system cleaners, or accidental deletion. If the error began immediately after a security scan, inspect the security product’s quarantine history.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are met:

  • The file is in %SystemRoot%srchasst.
  • The quarantine event clearly identifies the file as a false positive.
  • The file has a credible Microsoft signature.
  • The computer has been scanned and malware is not still active.

If malware is suspected, scan first and repair from original Windows media. Do not restore a same-named DLL from an untrusted folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem began after an update, driver installation, or software installation, use System Restore if it is available:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:

text
rstrui.exe

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Confirm the restore.
  5. Restart Windows.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal documents unchanged.

Fix 7: Repair or reinstall the program that requests the file

If the error appears only when launching one old program, identify that program in Task Manager, the shortcut properties, or the exact error dialog.

Then:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Try Repair.
  7. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Install a version supplied by the original software vendor.

For classic desktop software, use Control Panel → Programs and Features, select the program, and choose Repair or Change when available.

If the installer specifically expects an XP component, compatibility mode may help the application run, but it will not make Windows 10 or Windows 11 become Windows XP. Reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix when the application itself owns the broken dependency.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when the evidence points there

A graphics-driver update is not a normal fix for srchui.dll. Search Companion is a user-interface component, not a graphics-driver library. Consider a driver problem only if the error occurs alongside display failures, device errors, crashes, or a recent hardware change.

Check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters and any category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Check the Device status message.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Note the driver provider and date.
  9. Use Update Driver only if Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a matching driver.
  10. Restart and retest.

Do not replace a driver merely because its date looks old. If Device Manager shows no warning and the only symptom is srchui.dll, return to the application, Access-reference, or Windows-repair steps.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows editions, architecture, and vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can show its free scan’s findings and the full version performs the driver installation, but a driver update is not required for every srchui.dll error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features will not restore Search Companion

Do not expect Turn Windows features on or off to add srchui.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

To check:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Review the available components.

Search Companion is not a normal optional feature in current Windows releases. Enabling unrelated items such as .NET Framework, legacy media components, or Internet Explorer compatibility features will not reliably supply this DLL.

What not to do

Do not use random DLL download sites

A loose DLL download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible service-pack revision, or altered code. Even a genuine-looking file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the loader error.

There is no current official Microsoft standalone srchui.dll download package. Safe sources are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Matching original Windows XP or Server 2003 installation media.
  • The installed Windows component store and repair tools.
  • Microsoft Windows Update.
  • The original application’s official installer.
  • Microsoft support documentation.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64

The known file is a 32-bit XP-era component normally located in:

%SystemRoot%srchasst

Do not choose System32 or SysWOW64 based on generic DLL instructions. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit system components, but placing an XP file there does not recreate Search Companion and can create new compatibility problems.

Do not assume every error means the file is absent

A loader can report that a module could not be found when a dependency of that module is missing. An Access reference can be marked missing even when the database does not need the library. Always identify the requesting program first.

Frequently asked questions

Is srchui.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is the Search Assistant UI component of Microsoft Search Companion, published by Microsoft Corporation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is srchui.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

It is not part of the normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 Search stack. A request for it on a modern system usually comes from an old application, an Access database reference, or a damaged legacy installation.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The documented copies are 32-bit. Do not infer that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit version or that copying the file into a modern system directory will solve the error.

Should I run regsvr32?

Only for the old XP or Server 2003 Search Companion repair scenario, and only after confirming that the file exists in %SystemRoot%srchasst. It is not a general fix for modern applications or arbitrary downloaded DLLs.

Why does Microsoft Access mention srchui.dll?

An old database may retain a reference to an XP-era component. If the reference is marked MISSING but the database does not use it, clear the reference, compile the VBA project, save the database, and test its features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore srchui.dll?

SFC can repair protected Windows files when the file belongs to the installed Windows version and a suitable source is available. It will not add Search Companion to Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it cannot repair an obsolete third-party application dependency.

What if the file is missing on Windows XP?

Run the Search Companion reinstall procedure through %SystemRoot%Infsrchasst.inf, using matching Windows installation media. If Search remains blank and the file exists, the XP-specific regsvr32 /i command may be appropriate.

What if none of these steps works?

Confirm the operating system, inspect the exact path in the error, check Access references, review antivirus quarantine, and identify the application requesting the file. On XP, use original media for a repair installation if necessary. On modern Windows, repair or reinstall the legacy application instead of importing an XP DLL.
