The best Android camera app depends on your phone and shooting style: use the stock camera for the most reliable automatic photos, Open Camera for free manual control, ProShot for a polished manual workflow, Lightroom for capture plus editing, Camera FV-5 for technical stills, and Blackmagic Camera for serious video.

No third-party camera app is universally better than the camera app installed by your phone manufacturer. Pixel Camera and Samsung Camera can use proprietary image processing, HDR, night, portrait and multi-lens features that independent apps may not access. Alternative apps become valuable when you need manual exposure, RAW/DNG files, privacy, bracketing, editing or dedicated video controls.

Key takeaways

  • Pixel owners should start with Pixel Camera, while Galaxy owners should compare Samsung Camera, Pro mode and Expert RAW before replacing the stock app.
  • Open Camera is the strongest free manual option, with RAW/DNG, HDR, bracketing, histogram and focus tools available when the phone supports the required Camera2 features.
  • ProShot is the best polished manual camera recommendation for many enthusiasts, but lens access, RAW, maximum resolution and controls vary by phone.
  • Camera FV-5 is better suited to DSLR-style still photography, including manual focus, JPEG+DNG, exposure bracketing and an intervalometer.
  • Lightroom is the best capture-plus-editing choice, while Blackmagic Camera belongs in the dedicated video category rather than the still-photo rankings.

What is the best Android camera app?

The best Android camera app is usually the stock camera for automatic photos, Open Camera for free manual control, ProShot for a more polished manual experience, Camera FV-5 for technical still photography, Lightroom for a capture-and-edit workflow, and Blackmagic Camera for serious mobile video.

Best for Recommended app Why choose it Main qualification
Automatic photos on a Pixel Pixel Camera It is closely integrated with Pixel hardware and Google’s computational photography. It is not a universal recommendation for non-Pixel phones.
Free manual photography Open Camera Open-source, free and without third-party ads, with extensive controls where supported. Camera2 and lens support vary by phone.
Polished manual photo and video control ProShot Broad manual controls, RAW support and a user-friendly interface. Resolution, auxiliary lenses and other features may be restricted by the manufacturer.
DSLR-style still photography Camera FV-5 Manual exposure, ISO, focus, metering, white balance, bracketing and intervalometer tools. It rewards users who understand exposure settings.
Capture plus editing Adobe Lightroom Mobile DNG/HDR capture on compatible devices alongside organization and non-destructive editing. Some features, cloud sync and advanced tools require paid access.
Samsung-specific RAW Samsung Camera and Expert RAW Samsung’s own apps retain the best chance of accessing proprietary Galaxy modes. Compatibility changes by Galaxy model, One UI version and app release.
Professional mobile video Blackmagic Camera Video controls include frame rate, shutter angle, ISO and white balance. Android support and codecs are device-dependent.

Why is the stock camera often better for automatic photos?

The stock camera often produces the best automatic JPEG because the phone manufacturer controls both the camera hardware and the image-processing pipeline. The stock app may combine multiple frames for HDR or night photography, use proprietary portrait processing, switch among lenses correctly and apply device-specific sharpening and noise reduction.

Liphisy 64” Tripod for Cell Phone & Camera with Remote and Phone Holder
  • 【Sturdy and Stable】: Made of premium aluminum alloy and stainless steel, Liphisy phone tripod with remote keeps your device stay securely in place for still shots and video recording.
  • 【Multi-angle Shot】: With a max height of 64”, this tripod stand with a 210-degree rotation head and 360-degree rotation holder allows you to capture shots from any angle, catering to different photography needs.
  • 【Wireless Remote Included】: Package includes a wireless remote that connects to your cell phone easily, making it a breeze to snap photos or video recordings.
  • 【Height Adjustable】: The height of this cell phone tripod with remote can be adjusted from 17” to 64” and the easy lock mechanism makes it really easy to set up. It gives you an excellent vantage point for capturing photos and videos.
  • 【Wide Application】: Compatable with different phone and camera, this tripod is great for photography and video recording, perfect for travel and home use.

A manual app can provide more control without producing a better-looking finished photo. A third-party app may receive fewer processed frames, lack the manufacturer’s HDR or night algorithm, fail to access an auxiliary lens or use a different color and noise-reduction pipeline.

Pixel owners should use the official Pixel Camera as the starting point for automatic shooting. An APK or listing described as “Google Camera” is not automatically the official Pixel Camera. Unofficial GCam ports are separate projects with inconsistent compatibility, stability and provenance.

Samsung Galaxy owners should compare the stock Samsung Camera, Pro mode and Expert RAW before purchasing another manual app. Samsung can reserve high-resolution, multi-camera and computational features for its own software. Supported Galaxy models and modes should be checked in Samsung’s current app listing or compatibility documentation because support can change.

How should you define “best” in a camera app?

“Best” can mean better automatic JPEGs, more control, more editing latitude, better video controls or a more private workflow. Those are different outcomes, so the phone model should be the first filter rather than an afterthought.

Priority What to look for Best starting point
Fast, reliable photos Stock HDR, night, portrait and multi-lens processing Phone manufacturer’s camera
Manual exposure Shutter speed, ISO, focus, white balance, exposure lock and metering Open Camera, ProShot or Camera FV-5
Maximum editing latitude DNG capture, lens support and a compatible editing workflow Lightroom or a manual camera with RAW
Consistent sequences Focus lock, exposure lock, histogram, zebras or bracketing Open Camera, ProShot or Camera FV-5
Serious video Frame rate, shutter angle, ISO, white balance, codec and thermal reliability Blackmagic Camera, if supported
Privacy and low cost No third-party ads, optional location tagging, EXIF controls and no required account Open Camera

What do manual camera controls actually do?

Manual controls are useful when the phone’s automatic decisions are not the result you want, but every control depends on hardware and Android camera support.

  • Shutter speed: Controls light intake and motion blur. A slower shutter can create intentional blur but makes handheld shots and moving subjects less sharp.
  • ISO: Raises the camera’s sensitivity target. Higher ISO can brighten a shot but usually increases visible noise.
  • Manual focus: Helps with macro subjects, landscapes, video focus pulls and situations where autofocus hunts.
  • White balance: Corrects or intentionally changes color cast. Kelvin control is especially useful under mixed lighting.
  • Exposure compensation: Moves the automatic exposure target brighter or darker.
  • Metering: Selects which part of the frame influences exposure, such as matrix, center or spot metering.
  • Histogram: Shows how tones are distributed from shadows to highlights. A histogram helps identify clipping, but it does not prove that an image is artistically or technically correct.
  • Zebras: Mark areas approaching highlight clipping, which is useful for protecting bright skies, faces and reflective surfaces.
  • Focus peaking: Highlights edges that may be in focus, although low-contrast subjects can make focus peaking unreliable.
  • Focus and exposure lock: Prevents the phone from changing focus or brightness after you compose the shot.

Open Camera’s official feature documentation explains that manual controls, RAW and other Camera2 features depend on the device, Android version and camera implementation. Open Camera’s help documentation recommends using Camera2 for manual controls and RAW when the option is available. Camera FV-5 likewise states that ISO, manual exposure, white balance and adjustment ranges depend on device support.

What is the difference between computational camera apps and manual camera apps?

Computational camera apps prioritize a finished image with minimal setup, while manual camera apps prioritize control over exposure, focus and capture decisions.

Approach Best for Strengths Trade-offs
Computational and stock camera Night scenes, high-contrast scenes, portraits and quick snapshots Multi-frame HDR, night processing, automatic lens selection and fast results Less control over sharpening, noise reduction, tone and exposure decisions
Manual camera Long exposures, product photography, controlled lighting, focus pulls, astrophotography and consistent sequences Control of shutter, ISO, focus, white balance, metering and often RAW More setup, more user error and no ability to overcome a weak sensor or restricted hardware

For a handheld night photograph, the stock Night mode may look better because it combines several frames. For a tripod-mounted long exposure or a sequence that must share the same exposure, a manual app may be the better tool. The choice is about the intended result, not a universal image-quality hierarchy.

Which Android camera app should you choose?

Pixel Camera: best default for Pixel owners

Pixel Camera is the best starting point for Pixel owners who want automatic photos because Pixel-specific computational photography is tightly connected to Pixel hardware and software.

Pixel Camera is particularly appropriate when you rely on Night mode, HDR, portrait effects, automatic lens switching or a quick finished JPEG. Pixel users who need shutter, ISO, focus or RAW controls can add ProShot, Open Camera or Lightroom rather than abandoning Pixel Camera entirely.

Do not treat an unofficial GCam port as an equivalent replacement for the official Pixel app. GCam ports can offer interesting computational results on some non-Pixel phones, but builds may require device-specific configuration files, crash, render incorrect colors, miss auxiliary lenses or require sideloading.

Open Camera: best free manual camera app

Open Camera is the strongest free and privacy-friendly manual option for Android users who accept that feature availability depends on the phone. The developer describes Open Camera as open source and free of third-party ads in the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented features include exposure compensation and lock, ISO, white balance, HDR, exposure bracketing, RAW/DNG through Camera2, histogram, zebra stripes, focus peaking, timers, remote controls and auto-leveling. Slow-motion and log-profile video are also available on supported devices. Open Camera provides optional geotagging and EXIF-removal controls.

The current Open Camera site states that Open Camera requires Android 6.0 or later. Android minimum version does not guarantee feature support: Camera2 implementation, selected lens, Android version and manufacturer restrictions determine whether RAW, manual controls and other functions work.

Open Camera’s main weaknesses are a less polished interface, a potentially intimidating setup and weaker access to the stock app’s HDR, portrait and night processing. Test Open Camera before relying on it for an important event because the developer cannot test every Android device.

ProShot: best polished manual option for many enthusiasts

ProShot is the best polished manual camera recommendation for many enthusiasts who want photo and video controls, RAW support and a more approachable interface than a highly technical camera app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check ProShot on the exact phone before buying. Lens access, RAW capture, maximum resolution and available controls vary by manufacturer and model. A Google Play response from the ProShot developer says that restrictions on some Samsung phones can limit third-party apps to approximately 12 MP even when the phone advertises 50 MP or 200 MP modes; that statement describes a model- and manufacturer-specific restriction, not a universal ProShot limitation.

The ProShot Google Play listing should be used to check current compatibility, purchase terms and price for your region. The available research does not provide a reliable current US price, so a numeric price should not be treated as permanent.

Camera FV-5: best for DSLR-style technical stills

Camera FV-5 is the strongest choice for photographers who want a DSLR-style still-camera workflow rather than automatic computational processing.

Camera FV-5 documents manual ISO, manual exposure time, matrix, center and spot metering, manual, macro, infinity and touch focus modes, manual white balance, JPEG and DNG capture, exposure bracketing, intervalometer, burst capture, volume-key reassignment, Bluetooth shutter-remote support, composition grids and crop guides.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera FV-5’s official documentation confirms that feature ranges depend on the device. The Google Play listing requires Android 5.0 or later and says RAW requires a fully compliant Camera2 implementation. The listing’s stated shutter range can reach from 1/80,000 to 2 seconds, or the range available on the device; that is not a universal capability. The listing displayed a $4.99 price in the supplied research, but Google Play pricing should be rechecked for the US region before publication.

Camera FV-5 is not the easiest recommendation for casual point-and-shoot users, and Camera FV-5 does not reproduce the stock camera’s proprietary HDR or night processing simply because it offers manual settings.

Adobe Lightroom Mobile: best camera-plus-editor workflow

Adobe Lightroom Mobile is the best choice for readers who want to capture, organize and edit photographs in one workflow. Lightroom provides an in-app camera with Pro mode and supports DNG and HDR capture on compatible Android devices.

Adobe describes core capture, editing and organization as free, while premium tools, advanced editing, cloud storage and device synchronization require paid access. Lightroom’s non-destructive editing and presets make it useful when the final image matters as much as the capture.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adobe’s Lightroom installation information explains the free-versus-premium model. Adobe’s current technical requirements list Android 8.x or later, ARMv8 or x86-64 architecture, at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage; Adobe recommends 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage for smoother operation.

Lightroom’s camera is not the same as the phone manufacturer’s full camera pipeline. Adobe’s Android capture documentation says DNG capture is available only on supported devices and that manufacturers determine whether DNG capture is enabled. Lightroom is a poor fit for users who want a no-account, one-time-purchase camera app or who have limited storage.

Samsung Camera and Expert RAW: best Samsung-specific options

Samsung Camera and Expert RAW should be evaluated primarily as Galaxy-device options, not as universal Android camera apps. Samsung’s own software is most likely to retain access to Galaxy-specific processing, high-resolution modes, supported lenses and proprietary computational features.

Samsung users should compare the regular Camera app, Pro mode and Expert RAW before installing ProShot or another third-party app. Compatibility and supported modes can change according to Galaxy model, Android or One UI version and app release, so a universal supported-model list would become stale without a current Samsung compatibility check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blackmagic Camera: best dedicated Android video app

Blackmagic Camera is the best dedicated Android video recommendation for supported phones and users who want a more professional production workflow. Blackmagic documents frame-rate options from 24 through 240 fps where supported, off-speed recording, shutter speed and shutter angle, ISO, manual white balance, tint, device-dependent lens selection and codecs, Blackmagic Cloud integration and up to 8K recording where the device and codec support it.

Blackmagic’s official technical specifications describe the Android app as free and make clear that controls, codecs, frame rates and resolutions depend on the device. The Android support described by Blackmagic focuses on Samsung and Google Pixel phones, so check the current listing for your exact model.

Blackmagic Camera is not the best still-photo app. Blackmagic Camera is a poor fit for casual users who do not want to manage codecs, storage, frame rates, color workflows or thermal limits, and it is most useful when the workflow connects to DaVinci Resolve or Blackmagic Cloud.

GCam ports: interesting but too inconsistent for most users

GCam ports can be rewarding for technically inclined users, but GCam ports are too inconsistent to recommend as the default Android camera app. Unofficial builds may require a device-specific configuration file, fail to access auxiliary lenses, crash, produce incorrect colors or depend on sideloading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Readers who try a GCam port should verify the source and avoid random APK mirrors. An unofficial APK should never be presented as Google’s official Pixel Camera, and compatibility, security and update provenance should be treated as separate questions.

How do the main Android camera apps compare?

The following comparison separates documented features from phone-dependent capabilities. “Device-dependent” means the app may expose the feature only when the selected phone, lens, Android version, Camera2 implementation or codec supports it.

App Android minimum Cost model Manual control RAW/DNG Video tools Account or cloud
Stock camera / Pixel Camera Varies by phone Included with the phone Varies by manufacturer Varies by model and mode Usually strongest device integration Usually no separate account required
Open Camera Android 6.0+ Free ISO, exposure, focus and white balance where supported Camera2-dependent Slow motion and log profile where supported No core account or cloud requirement
ProShot Check Google Play listing Paid app; current price varies by region Broad photo and video controls, device-dependent Supported on compatible devices Manual video controls, device-dependent No subscription claim should be assumed without checking current listing
Camera FV-5 Android 5.0+ Paid app; listing price should be checked Manual ISO, shutter, focus, metering and white balance JPEG+DNG with compliant Camera2 More limited than a dedicated video app No cloud workflow required
Lightroom Mobile Android 8.x+, ARMv8 or x86-64, 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage minimums listed by Adobe Free core features; premium subscription for advanced features and sync Pro capture mode on compatible devices DNG/HDR on supported devices Not a dedicated cinema camera Adobe account and paid cloud features may apply
Samsung Expert RAW Varies by Galaxy model Usually part of the Galaxy ecosystem Device-specific RAW and Pro controls Compatible Galaxy models only Not the primary reason to choose it Samsung ecosystem requirements may apply
Blackmagic Camera Supported Samsung and Pixel models; verify exact phone Free app; related cloud services may cost extra Shutter angle, shutter speed, ISO and white balance where supported Not its main purpose Frame rate, codecs, off-speed and up to 8K where supported Blackmagic Cloud is optional but relevant to collaboration

What is RAW or DNG, and should you use it?

RAW or DNG preserves more editable sensor information than a finished JPEG, but RAW is not automatically better. RAW files are larger, require editing and may bypass or reduce the phone’s best multi-frame HDR, portrait or night processing.

A third-party app can technically save a DNG while receiving a limited or processed stream from the device. Some phones expose RAW only from the main camera, and RAW support does not guarantee full sensor resolution. Lightroom’s DNG capture is also enabled only on compatible devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the stock camera for quick, processed photos. Use RAW when you intend to adjust exposure, recover highlights, change white balance or substantially reshape color during editing. For an important scene, capture a stock JPEG and a DNG only if storage and workflow justify the extra files.

How do you set up Open Camera for manual controls?

  1. Install Open Camera from a trusted source and grant only the permissions needed for the features you intend to use.
  2. Open the app’s settings and select the Camera2 API if the option is available. Open Camera recommends Camera2 for manual controls and RAW.
  3. Start with the primary rear camera. Test ISO, shutter speed, focus, white balance and exposure lock before testing ultrawide or telephoto lenses.
  4. Enable the histogram or zebra stripes when you need to protect highlights. Use focus peaking as an aid, not as proof that focus is correct.
  5. Enable RAW/DNG only after confirming that the phone and selected lens support it. Take a test file and open it in an editor.
  6. Test HDR, bracketing, video modes and remote controls on the exact phone. Feature names in the interface do not guarantee hardware support.

If Camera2 is unavailable or manual controls do nothing, the phone may expose only the legacy camera API or restrict the selected feature. Update the app and phone, test the main camera and consult the app’s compatibility notes before concluding that the app is defective.

How should you choose between JPEG and RAW?

Choose JPEG when speed, small files and the phone’s automatic processing matter most. Choose RAW/DNG when you will edit exposure, highlights, white balance or color and can accept larger files and more work.

Situation Better starting format Reason
Family snapshot or quick share JPEG The file is ready immediately and benefits from the stock camera’s processing.
High-contrast landscape to edit later JPEG plus RAW if supported The JPEG gives a processed result while DNG provides an additional editing option.
Handheld night scene Stock processed mode first Multi-frame night processing may outperform a single manually exposed RAW file.
Product photo or controlled lighting RAW/DNG Manual exposure, white balance and editing latitude are more valuable.
Limited storage or no editing workflow JPEG RAW files are larger and provide little benefit without post-processing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why do manual controls or RAW sometimes fail?

Manual controls appear but do nothing

Manual controls can fail because the phone does not expose the control through Camera2, the selected lens does not support it, the app is using a legacy API, the manufacturer reserves the feature for its own app or the control is available only in photo or video mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch to Camera2 if the app offers that setting, test the primary rear camera, update the app and phone, and check the developer’s compatibility notes. A visible control is not proof that the hardware can implement the control.

RAW is unavailable

RAW can be unavailable when the device does not expose a RAW-capable stream, RAW is limited to one lens, the app’s camera module does not support the phone or the manufacturer disables the capability. Test the primary camera, check the app’s device information and confirm DNG support on the manufacturer’s documentation.

Third-party photos look worse than stock photos

Third-party photos can look worse because the stock app uses proprietary HDR, night, portrait, sharpening and noise-reduction processing. Incorrect manual exposure can also make a manual app’s result worse. Greater control and better-looking automatic JPEGs are different benefits.

Maximum-resolution mode is missing

A missing 50 MP or 200 MP mode does not automatically indicate an app defect. Manufacturers can restrict third-party access to high-resolution modes. The ProShot developer has specifically described Samsung restrictions that can limit third-party apps on some phones.

Night photography disappoints

Manual apps are not automatically better at night. A longer shutter can introduce movement blur, while the stock camera may combine several frames. Compare the stock Night mode and the manual app on a tripod and handheld rather than assuming that RAW wins.

Video overheats or stops

High frame rates, high resolution, log or high-bit-rate codecs, full-screen brightness, sustained processor load, slow storage and thermal limits can stop a recording. Make short test recordings, confirm codec and frame-rate support, check available storage and test the phone at the expected ambient temperature before an important shoot.

How should you test a third-party camera app on your phone?

  1. Record the exact phone model, Android version and camera lens being tested.
  2. Photograph the same static scene with the stock camera and the alternative app in automatic mode.
  3. Repeat the test with HDR, night mode, portrait mode and each lens you normally use.
  4. Test manual ISO, shutter, focus, white balance, exposure lock and histogram or zebras separately.
  5. Capture a DNG if offered, confirm that the file opens correctly and check the actual pixel dimensions.
  6. Record a short video at the resolution, frame rate and codec you expect to use.
  7. Check autofocus, lens switching, storage speed, overheating, crashes and file-saving reliability.
  8. Keep the stock camera installed even after choosing a third-party app; the stock app may remain the better tool for HDR, portraits, night scenes or an important event.

What is the best two-app Android camera setup?

The most useful setup for many readers is the stock camera plus one specialist app. The stock camera handles fast automatic photos and proprietary processing, while the second app supplies a missing control or workflow.

Two-app setup Best for How to divide the work
Stock camera + Open Camera Most users who want free manual control Use stock HDR, portrait and night modes; use Open Camera for manual exposure, RAW, bracketing or privacy-focused capture.
Stock camera + ProShot Enthusiasts who want a polished manual app Use ProShot for controlled photo and video work after checking lens and resolution support.
Stock camera + Lightroom Photographers who edit Use stock processing for quick photos; use Lightroom when capture, DNG, organization and editing belong in one workflow.
Stock camera + Blackmagic Camera Mobile videographers Use the stock camera for casual clips and Blackmagic Camera for supported professional video settings.

How do privacy, permissions and metadata differ?

Camera apps commonly need camera permission, and video apps may need microphone permission. Location permission can add GPS data to EXIF metadata, while cloud workflows can upload images or video beyond the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Camera documents optional geotagging, EXIF-removal controls and the absence of third-party ads. Camera FV-5 documents that geolocation is disabled by default and can embed location data when enabled. Lightroom requires an Adobe account for its broader organization and synchronization workflow, while Blackmagic Cloud is relevant when users choose collaborative cloud features.

Review permissions after installation, disable location tagging unless needed, inspect EXIF before sharing sensitive images and avoid unverified camera APKs. Sideloaded GCam ports deserve additional scrutiny because the source, update path and code provenance may be unclear.

Final recommendations by phone and shooting style

  • Pixel: Start with Pixel Camera. Add Open Camera, ProShot or Lightroom only when you need manual controls, RAW or editing.
  • Samsung Galaxy: Compare Samsung Camera, Pro mode and Expert RAW first. Check the exact model before buying a third-party app because resolution and lens restrictions are possible.
  • Budget Android phone: Try Open Camera, but expect Camera2 support and image-processing quality to vary. The stock app may still produce the better automatic JPEG.
  • Older Android phone: Camera FV-5 lists Android 5.0 or later, while Open Camera’s current site lists Android 6.0 or later. Actual controls still depend on the phone’s camera implementation.
  • RAW photographer: Confirm DNG support on the exact lens and plan for editing and storage. Lightroom is convenient when capture and editing should stay together.
  • Manual still photographer: Choose Open Camera for free control, ProShot for a polished interface or Camera FV-5 for bracketing, intervalometer and DSLR-style settings.
  • Mobile videographer: Try Blackmagic Camera if the phone is supported and the workflow justifies manual codecs, frame rates, shutter angle, storage and color management.
  • Privacy-conscious user: Start with Open Camera, review location and EXIF settings and avoid treating unofficial APKs as trustworthy alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Open Camera better than the stock Android camera?

Open Camera is better when you need free manual controls, RAW/DNG, bracketing or privacy features, but the stock camera can produce better automatic HDR, portrait and night photos because it is integrated with the phone’s image-processing pipeline. Results depend on the exact phone and lens.

Does a camera app improve Android photo quality?

A camera app can improve control or editing latitude, but a third-party app does not automatically produce better-looking photos. The stock camera may use proprietary multi-frame processing that an independent app cannot access.

Which Android camera app is best for RAW photos?

Open Camera, ProShot, Camera FV-5 and Lightroom can support RAW or DNG on compatible devices, but RAW availability depends on the phone, selected lens and Camera2 implementation. RAW is useful when you plan to edit; it is not automatically better than a processed JPEG.

Which Android camera app is best for video?

Blackmagic Camera is the strongest dedicated Android video recommendation for supported Samsung and Google Pixel phones. Blackmagic documents controls such as frame rate, shutter angle, ISO and white balance, but available resolutions, codecs and frame rates depend on the exact device.

Are GCam ports official Google Camera apps?

GCam ports are unofficial builds and are not automatically equivalent to the official Pixel Camera. GCam port compatibility, security, stability, lens access and configuration requirements vary, so GCam ports are best treated as an advanced experiment rather than a default recommendation.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Keep the stock camera for the best chance of reliable automatic processing. Add Open Camera for free manual control, ProShot for a polished enthusiast workflow, Camera FV-5 for technical stills, Lightroom for capture and editing, or Blackmagic Camera for supported professional video. Test every alternative on the exact phone before depending on it.
