Option 1: Crop a Picture Through the WordPress Media Library
Before adding a picture to a post or page, you can easily resize the picture in the WordPress media library. However, you need to first upload the image to the WordPress media library before cropping it.
Hence, in the first sub-section below, you will learn how to upload a picture to the WordPress media library. Then, the second sub-section will teach you how to crop the uploaded picture in the WordPress media library.

Step 1: Upload an Image to the WordPress Media Library
- First, log in to the WordPress backend using an administrator account. Then, hover your mouse pointer on Media on the left pane and click Add New.
- Now, click the Select Files button inside the dotted box under Upload New Media. Consequently, the Open window should automatically open on your computer.
- In the Open window, navigate to the location where you stored the picture you want to upload. Then, select the picture and click the Open button at the bottom right of the window.
- By doing that, the selected picture should be uploaded to the WordPress media library.
Step 2: Crop a Picture Through the WordPress Media Library
- Using an admin account, log into the WordPress backend. Next, hover your mouse on Media on the left pane, then select Library.
- Afterward, select the picture you wish to crop in the WordPress media library.
- Following that, click the Edit Image button under the image on the Attachment details page.
- After doing that, click the Crop button among the options at the top of the picture. Consequently, the picture will be surrounded by a dotted box with small boxes on its edges.
- Then, hover your mouse cursor on any side of the dotted box surrounding the picture or on the edges till it turns into a double arrow. Next, drag the box’s side/edge inward/outward while pressing your mouse’s right-click button to identify the portion of the image you want to crop.
- After doing all that, click the Crop button at the top of the image again to crop the picture.
- By doing that, the image should be cropped. Hence, click the blue Save button under the picture to save the change.
Option 2: Resize a Picture via the WordPress Block Editor
Interestingly, you can also crop a picture in a post or page on your WordPress site through the WordPress block editor. To do that, follow the procedures below.

- Login to the WordPress backend using an admin account. Then, select Posts or Pages on the left pane, depending on where the picture you want to crop is.
- Next, click the title of the post/page that features the picture you want to crop. For this demonstration, I will select the “Untitled” post.
- When the post or page opens, select the picture you want to resize. Then, click the Crop icon among the icons at the top of the picture.
- After doing that, a grid will appear on the picture. Hence, zoom in/out the image using the scroller on your mouse, then move the part of the picture you want to crop.
- Finally, click the Apply button among the options at the top of the picture to crop the picture.
