Is the download speed so slow on your PC, and you’re not sure why? This article highlights possible causes and practical ways to resolve them.
Factors Contributing to the Crawling Download Rate on Your PC
While there could be many reasons for your lagging download speed, below are the most probable causes.
1. Type of Internet Connection
The type of connection and your location can affect your download rate. For example, dial-up connections, still common in some rural areas, are extremely slow for modern downloading needs.

Similarly, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), which uses phone lines, may result in slow downloads due to aging infrastructure or distance from the provider’s hub.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The alternative is Fiber Optic Service (FiOS), which is much faster and more reliable by transmitting data through light signals. However, availability depends on your location and provider.
2. Internet Service Provider
Your download rate might slow down due to ISP throttling, where your Internet Service Provider (ISP) deliberately reduces your Internet speed. ISPs often employ
this tactic during peak hours when many users are online to prevent network congestion.
In some cases, the aim is to limit specific activities like streaming, gaming, or large downloads to prioritize other traffic. Furthermore, your ISP might limit your speed as part of their policy if you’ve exceeded your plan’s data cap.

It is quite possible to have a weak network due to factors like distance from the router or network congestion. In wireless setups, physical barriers such as walls or floors between the router and your device can significantly reduce signal strength and download speed.
For wired connections, the number of devices sharing the network can affect your download rate. Besides, activities like streaming, gaming, or large file transfers on those devices can cause noticeable lags.
4. Outdated network drivers or Hardware Issues
Failure to set your network drivers to the latest may cause slow download speed on your PC. This is because they may not fully support the latest network standards.
Hardware issues, such as a malfunctioning network card, can also contribute to slow downloads. Similarly, faulty Ethernet cables or damaged ports can result in poor connectivity.

Moreover, older devices, including desktops, laptops, or gaming consoles, may experience a decline in performance due to outdated hardware.
5. Browser or Background Applications
Running background applications on your PC, such as cloud storage syncing or automatic updates, can affect bandwidth and leave less for downloads. These processes may run unnoticed, slowing down your network performance.
Besides, some browsers with numerous extensions or tabs opened can further impact download speeds. Certain extensions operate in the background, using bandwidth or system resources.
Additionally, outdated browsers may cause poor download speed due to bugs or security issues.
Fixes for Poor Download Speed on PC
Most problems with download rates can easily be resolved once you have identified the problem. Here are solutions to fix slow download speeds on your PC.
1. Adjust Your Home Network Connection
To ensure stable connections, you need to set up your network conveniently and limit the number of devices. As an admin, be sure to disconnect unused devices, as they may consume data for updates even when idle.
Another way to ensure priority in your home network is via Quality of Service (QoS) settings on your router. This feature allows you to allocate more bandwidth to certain activities or your PC instead.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If your router has this feature, you can access the QoS with the following steps.
Step 1: Find your Router’s IP address and enter it in the Browser on your PC
Step 2: Then, log in with your Router’s Admin username and password. This is often found on the router.
Step 3: Next, locate the QoS settings in Advanced networks, Wireless settings, or Traffic management.
Step 4: Once you have enabled the QoS, set the Upload/Download bandwidth with a priority percentage and apply the changes.
On the flip side, you consider resetting your router occasionally. Your crawling download rate may be the result of temporary network glitches.
2. Check Your Internet Service Provider
In the case of a service provider, start by confirming your ISP’s promised internet speed with a speed test. If you notice networks lag at certain times of the day, it may be due to throttling by your ISP as previously explained..
This could be grounds to change your internet provider if these times are important periods for you. Before that, you can simply reach out to their customer service for a better plan or service.
Alternatively, you should consider using a reliable VPN to help limit your ISP’s control over your network in case of throttle.
Above all, examine your Internet providers and compare them with others to be sure the problem is not with them. Some may not have the best internet infrastructure to meet your needs.

3. Close Background and Bandwidth-Intensive Applications
When some applications may be interfering with your download speed, it is important to identify and close them down to free up bandwidth. To address this, click the Windows icon button, search for Task Manager, and press Enter to open it.
In the Processes tab, click Network to view apps using bandwidth. Identify and right-click on the apps, then select End task to close them.

4. Update Network Drivers and Check Hardware
It is a good idea to occasionally check your drivers, as outdated drivers may slow down your download speed. One way to go about this is to check the manufacturer’s
website for your PC’s drivers using a device manager.
To do this, search for Device Manager via the Windows icon. Open it, locate the network adapter, right-click, and select Update driver.
Then, choose Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts. Afterward, restart your system to apply the changes. You can check How to Update Drivers in Windows 11 to know more.
Aside from that, inspect and replace faulty cables or outdated network cards if necessary. Also, confirm the Ethernet port is functioning properly by connecting it with another device.
