Before you upgrade your Windows 7 to Windows 10, it is recommended to extract your Windows 7 key.

As of the time of writing this article (10th September 2019), you can still update Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free. This may change when you are upgrading your PC. Find out whether you need a new product key when you finish upgrading your Windows 7 PC to Windows 10.

Option 1: Update with Media Creation Tool

Here are the steps to use this method to upgrade Windows 7 to 10:

  • Below Create Windows 10 Installation Media, click Download tool now.

  • Then save the file to a location on your computer

  • Double-click the MediaCreationTool..to initiate the update. Then on the User Account Control prompt, click Yes.

  • Wait for the tool to get ready…
  • Then, at the Applicable notices and license terms screen, click Accept.
  • The tool will request another wait..

  • Then it will load the screen you have been waiting for! Ensure that Upgrade this PC now option is selected. Then click Next.

  • The media creation tool will start downloading Windows 10. Depending on the speed of your internet connect, this takes between 40 to 60 minutes.
  • When the download is completed, it will perform some checks then load another license agreement.
  • The installer will check for updates and perform a few additional checks…
  • Finally, at the Ready to install screen, confirm that you are happy with the selection. If you want to make a change, click Change what to keep (not recommended). When you finish, click Install.
The setup will automatically determine the version of Windows 10 to install. This is based on your Windows 7 version.
  • Finally, the screen you have been waiting for arrives! Just wait….
  • After Windows 7 update to Windows 10, login with the same username you used in Windows 7. Windows 10 will take some time to run some updates.
  • In the next screen configure privacy settings for your computer. When you finish click Accept.
  • Now you have Windows 10!
  • To confirm that Windows 10 activated with your Windows 7 key, check the activation status. You do not need a new product key!

Option 2: Update with the Installation Media

If you have an existing Windows 10 installation media you may use this method to upgrade Windows 7 to 10.

Here are the detailed steps for this method:

  • Insert Windows 10 installation media (USB or DVD) into your Windows 7 PC.
  • Then login to your PC and open the media. To initiate update, double-click setup.

  • Then, on User Account Control click Yes.

  • The installer will take a while to prepare…
  • Then at the Install Windows 10 screen, if you prefer for Windows 10 not to download updates during the upgrade, click Change how Windows Setup downloads updates. Then select the option Not at the moment (Not recommended). Finally, Click Next.
  • If you selected the default (Download updates, drivers and optional features), Windows 10 will check for updates.
  • Then setup will perform a few checks before it continues.
  • When it is ready, accept the license agreement.
  • Setup will perform a few checks including checking for updates. Wait…
  • For my upgrade installation, I received this attention. You may or may not receive anything at this stage. To continue, click Refresh.
  • Then, at the Ready to install screen, click Install.
  • Windows 10 will begin installation.
  • After Windows 7 update to Windows 10 login. Windows 10 will take some time to run some updates.
  • In the next screen configure privacy settings for your computer. When you finish click Accept.

  • Your PC is updated to Windows 10!
