This Itechguide teaches you how to chat in Google Docs. The guide covers steps to chat in Google Docs from a computer.
As at the time of writing this Itechguide, Google Docs does not support chatting from the Android or the iPhone Apps. The option to chat is only available from a PC (Docs.Google.com).
To chat in Google Docs, the following conditions MUST be met:
- The document MUST be shared with at least one person with a Google Account
- At least one other person with access to the document MUST be viewing the document at the same time.
- The other person viewing the document MUST be signed into their Google Account.

- Open Docs.Google.com from a computer. Then, sign in with your Google Account.
- Once you have signed in to Google Docs with your Google Account, open the document you want to work on.
- You open a saved document from Recent documents. You could also open a docuemnt from Google Drive.
- To open Google Drive, click the 3 lines on the top left of the page. Then click Drive.
- At the top right of the document, tap the Show chat button beside the person you want to chat with.
The Show chat button will NOT be available if you are the only person viewing the document.
- When you click the Show chat button, a chat window will be displayed on the right of the document. Scroll down the window and type your chat in the Type here to chat box.
- Then, press the Enter key on your keyboard to send the chat.
