This Itechguide teaches you how to change download location on Windows 10.
Option 1: Change Download Location for All Browsers
All browsers use the default Windows 10 download location. If you change this location, it will be updated for all browsers. To change the download location for all browsers, follow the steps below:
Change Default Download Location
There is a second sub-section with steps to change Windows 10 downloads to the default location
- Enter %UserProfile% in the Windows 10 search box. Then, on the search results, click %UserProfile% System Folder. This will open your Windows 10 user profile folder.
- Right-click the Downloads folder on your profile and select Properties.
- Then, on Download Properties, click the Location tab.
- To change the location of the Downloads folder, click Move.
- Then, navigate to the new folder you want to point Downloads folder to, highlight the folder and click Select Folder.
- Your Windows 10 Downloads folder will now be pointing to the new location you just set. To save the new Downloads location, click OK. You will receive a Move Folder confirmation pop-up.
- Finally, to change the download location for all browsers, on the bottom left of the Move Folder pop-up, click Yes.
You may need to restart your browsers (close and reopen) for the new download location to take effect.
Restore the Default Download Location
If you want to restore the download location to the default location, follow the steps below:

- Open the new download location. Then, right-click the Downloads folder and select Properties.
- On the Download Properties, click the Location tab.
- On click Location tab, click Restore Default. The Downloads folder location will change to %UserProfile%\Downloads
- To save the new Downloads location, click OK. You may receive a pop-up notifying you that %UserProfile%\Downloads does not exist.
- On the pop-up, click Yes. You will then receive a Move Folder confirmation request.
- Finally, to change download location on Windows 10 to the default location, on the Move Folder confirmation pop-up, click Yes.
Option 2: Change Download Location for Individual Browsers

Method 1: Change Download Location for Chrome
- Open the Chrome settings Downloads link from the Chrome browser.
- Then, on the right side of the current Downloads location, click Change.
- Finally, navigate to the new folder you want to use for Chrome downloads and click Select Folder. The new folder will be displayed – see the second image below.
Method 2: Change Download Location for Microsoft Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge browser. On the top right of the browser, click the browser menu.
- Then, from the displayed menu options, click Downloads.
- On the Downloads settings, click Choose where downloads go.
- Scroll down to the Downloads section and click Change.
- Finally, navigate to the new folder you want to use for Edge Downloads and click Select Folder. The new Downloads folder location will be displayed – see the second image below.
Method 3: Change Download Location for Firefox
- Open Firefox browser and click the browser menu on the top right of the browser. The menu options will be displayed.
- From the displayed menu, click Options.
- On the Options settings, scroll down to the Files and Applications section. Then, on the right side of Save files to, click Browse.
- Finally, navigate to the new folder you want to use for Firefox downloads and click Select Folder. The new downloads location will be displayed on the Save files to field – see the second image below.
