Apple Podcasts settings are split between the device’s Settings app, the Podcasts app, and controls for individual shows or episodes. On iPhone and iPad, use Settings > Apps > Podcasts for app-wide download, sync, and video choices; use the player for playback speed and transcripts; and use a show’s settings for preferences that should apply only to that show. On Mac, open Podcasts > Settings, where General, Playback, and Advanced panes collect most controls.
The exact labels can vary with your iOS, iPadOS, or macOS release. The paths below follow Apple’s current user guidance, including the mobile instructions published May 12, 2026. If a label is different on your device, look for the same setting in the Podcasts app or its Settings window rather than assuming the feature is missing.
Which Apple Podcasts setting should you change?
Start by deciding whether the change should affect every show, one followed show, or only the episode currently playing. That scope determines where the control lives.

Two settings can appear to conflict when they actually have different scopes. For example, a global automatic-download choice can be overridden by a followed show’s own download settings, and a show-specific playback speed can differ from the general behavior you use elsewhere.

Change Apple Podcasts settings on iPhone or iPad
Open the app-level Podcasts settings
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Podcasts. (On some earlier operating-system releases, Podcasts may appear directly in the main Settings list.)
- Change the download, video, sync, and other app-wide options described below.
These controls affect Podcasts as a whole. A setting you make for a particular show later can narrow the behavior for that show.
Control automatic downloads
In Settings > Apps > Podcasts, choose the automatic-download behavior that fits your storage and listening habits. You can enable automatic downloads for followed shows and turn on removal of played downloads so completed episodes do not remain on the device indefinitely.
Automatic downloads can pause when a show has not been watched or heard for a while. If that happens, open the show’s page in your library and resume downloads there. Pausing is a housekeeping behavior, not evidence that the show has been unfollowed.
Set downloads for one followed show
- Open Podcasts and tap Library.
- Tap Shows.
- Touch and hold the show you want to modify.
- Tap Settings.
- Adjust that show’s automatic-download and video-download choices.
Use a per-show rule when a global rule is too broad—for example, allowing automatic downloads for a daily news show while preventing a video-heavy series from filling storage.
Stop Podcasts from syncing your library
To turn off library synchronization on an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Podcasts and turn off Sync Library. This changes whether your followed shows, saved episodes, and listening state are synchronized through your Apple account. It does not delete the Podcasts app or erase a podcast’s catalog from the service.
If you listen on multiple Apple devices, leave Sync Library on unless you deliberately want each device to maintain a separate library. Turning it off can make follows, saves, and playback position appear inconsistent between devices.

Manage podcast video and cellular data
Audio and video have separate network implications. A video episode can use considerably more data than its audio version, so Apple provides distinct streaming and download controls.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Prevent video streaming over cellular data
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Podcasts.
- Find Video Streaming.
- Turn off Allow Over Cellular.
With that option off, Podcasts streams video only when the device is connected to Wi‑Fi. Audio streaming is governed by the other network and download choices in Podcasts, so check those separately if your goal is to eliminate all cellular playback.
Choose whether automatic downloads contain video
- Go to Settings > Apps > Podcasts.
- Under Automatic Downloads, choose Download Video if you want video episodes saved automatically.
- When Apple offers the cellular-data choice, select Audio Only or Video.
Choosing Audio Only for cellular downloads lets Podcasts use mobile data for the smaller audio version while reserving video downloads for Wi‑Fi. If you select Video, video versions may download over cellular when the rest of your automatic-download rules permit it.
When a show’s video rule differs from the global rule
A followed show can have its own video-download setting. Use Library > Shows, touch and hold the show, tap Settings, and change the show-level choice. This is useful when you want video for a visual series but audio-only downloads for most other shows.
Change playback speed and audio behavior
Change speed for the episode you are playing
- Start an episode.
- Expand the mini player at the bottom of the Podcasts screen.
- Tap Playback Speed.
- Choose a preset, or press and drag the speed menu to select a specific speed when that control is available.
Speed changes are useful for long interviews, lectures, and news briefings. A faster rate shortens listening time; a slower rate can make dense or unfamiliar material easier to follow. The control changes playback timing, not the underlying audio file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGive one show a persistent speed and dialogue setting
- Open Library > Shows.
- Select the show.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Open Speed & Audio Adjustments.
- Choose Custom for This Show, then set the preferred speed and Enhance Dialogue option.
A per-show speed is practical when one program is consistently slow or fast. Enhance Dialogue is intended to make spoken words easier to hear; it is a show-level audio preference, not a replacement for a device-wide hearing or accessibility setting.

Use the sleep timer and other player controls
Apple’s listening controls include a sleep timer, a queue showing what plays next, and controls for moving backward or forward. Apple describes the default jumps as 15 seconds back and 30 seconds forward in its Mac listening guidance. On platforms that expose customizable skip intervals, you can change those jumps in Settings rather than repeatedly tapping the default buttons.
Use the sleep timer when you want playback to stop after a selected interval or at the end of the current episode. The timer applies to playback, not to downloads, so it will not prevent an episode that is already queued for automatic download.
Read and search episode transcripts
When an episode includes a transcript, expand the player and tap Transcript. The transcript can follow the audio with time-synced text, let you search for a word, jump directly to a passage, and expose available chapter links.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What it means when Transcript is unavailable
A grayed-out Transcript button means Apple does not have a transcript for that episode. Transcripts are not guaranteed for every show or release. Apple also identifies Belarus and Russia as regions where transcripts are unavailable.
Transcript availability is therefore determined by both the individual episode and the listener’s region. Changing playback speed, downloading the episode, or turning on Sync Library will not create a transcript where none is provided.
Use a transcript without losing your place
- Open the current episode in the player and tap Transcript.
- Scroll to read along, or use search to find a word or phrase.
- Tap a matching result or passage to jump the audio to that point.
- Use a chapter link when one is available to move to a named section.
The transcript is a navigation and reading aid tied to the episode’s timing. It should not be treated as a separate, universally available text edition.

Configure Apple Podcasts on Mac
On Mac, most app-wide choices are in one window: open Podcasts > Settings. The window is divided into General, Playback, and Advanced panes.
General pane: library and download behavior
Use General for:
- Sync Library, which controls synchronization of your Podcasts library across Apple devices using the same account.
- Download When Saving, which determines whether saving an episode also downloads it.
- Remove Played Downloads, which removes downloaded episodes after you have listened to them.
- Automatic-download choices for followed shows.
These controls are especially important on a Mac with limited storage. If you save many episodes for later but do not want every saved item downloaded, review Download When Saving before changing your saving routine.
Playback pane: continuous play, skips, and headphones
The Playback pane contains controls for:
- Continuous playback, which determines whether Podcasts proceeds to the next item after an episode ends.
- Skip-button intervals, selectable from 10 to 60 seconds.
- Headphone controls, including whether a headphone button moves between episodes or skips within the current episode.
Choose a shorter skip interval when you use the buttons for fine navigation, such as replaying a sentence. Choose a longer interval when you routinely move past introductions or advertisements. Headphone behavior matters when physical controls are your primary way to navigate and you do not want a button press to leave the current episode.
Advanced pane: what stays visible and what Siri suggests
The Advanced pane includes options to hide played episodes and manage Siri Suggestions. Hiding played episodes changes the way your library is presented; it does not mean the episodes were never played or that the publisher removed them.
Disable Siri Suggestions if you do not want listening activity used to surface podcast recommendations in Siri-supported areas. The setting changes suggestions, not your follows or subscriptions.

Global settings versus show settings
Understanding precedence prevents accidental changes. Global settings establish the normal behavior for the app; a show setting applies a narrower rule to that show. The following examples show why the distinction matters:
- You can enable automatic downloads globally, then disable them for a single show whose episodes are too large.
- You can allow video downloads for one visual series while selecting audio-only behavior elsewhere.
- You can listen to most shows at the normal rate while assigning a faster or slower persistent speed to one followed show.
- You can remove played downloads globally while still deciding which shows should download automatically.
If a show is not following the behavior you expect, check its own settings before changing the global rule. A show-level choice may be doing exactly what it was configured to do.
Practical configurations for common listening habits
Save cellular data
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Podcasts.
- Turn off Allow Over Cellular under Video Streaming.
- Under Automatic Downloads, choose Audio Only rather than Video for the cellular-data choice when offered.
- Review followed shows individually and disable video downloads for shows that do not need them.
- Turn on removal of played downloads to keep completed files from accumulating.
This configuration still permits audio listening while preventing automatic video traffic over a mobile connection.
Keep a large offline library under control
- Enable Remove Played Downloads in the app-wide settings.
- Use per-show automatic-download choices instead of downloading every followed show.
- For video shows, choose audio-only downloads unless you specifically need the picture offline.
- On Mac, review Download When Saving in Podcasts > Settings > General.
Removing played downloads does not remove your follow or erase the episode from Apple’s catalog; it removes the local downloaded copy after playback.
Listen quickly to a long-form show
- Set the current episode’s speed from the expanded player.
- If the same show is always too slow, save the preference under its per-show Speed & Audio Adjustments.
- Set a longer forward skip interval on Mac if you often move past recurring segments.
- Use the transcript’s search and chapter links to jump directly to a topic when a transcript is available.
Make bedtime listening stop reliably
- Start the episode and open the player controls.
- Set the sleep timer for the desired duration or for the end of the episode.
- If you use a Mac, confirm continuous playback is configured the way you want in Podcasts > Settings > Playback.
The sleep timer controls playback. It does not alter automatic-download schedules or remove files.
Troubleshoot settings that do not seem to work
Downloads continue after you tried to stop them
- Check Settings > Apps > Podcasts for the global automatic-download choice.
- Open Library > Shows, touch and hold the affected show, tap Settings, and inspect its per-show rule.
- Look for a previously saved episode. Saving can trigger a download when Download When Saving is enabled on Mac.
- Remember that an episode already downloaded will remain until you delete it or a removal rule removes it.
Video uses cellular data unexpectedly
- Verify that Allow Over Cellular is off under Video Streaming.
- Check the Automatic Downloads cellular choice and select Audio Only rather than Video when available.
- Inspect the show’s own video-download setting, because a per-show rule can differ from the global preference.
The playback speed keeps changing back
- Set the speed while the episode is playing and confirm whether you changed only the current episode.
- For a lasting rule, open the followed show’s Speed & Audio Adjustments and choose Custom for This Show.
- If you listen on multiple devices, check Sync Library. Different library-sync states can make preferences and listening position appear inconsistent.
The Transcript button is gray
A gray button means the episode has no available transcript. Confirm that the episode is one for which Apple provides transcript support; changing speed, downloading it, or restarting the app will not generate missing transcript data. Regional availability also matters, including Apple’s stated unavailability in Belarus and Russia.
Headphone buttons skip the wrong amount
On Mac, open Podcasts > Settings > Playback and review both the skip interval and the headphone-control behavior. The button can be configured to move between episodes or to skip within one episode, so changing only the number of seconds may not address the problem.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Changes are different on another Apple device
Check whether Sync Library is enabled on the devices involved and whether you changed a global preference on one platform but a show-level preference on another. Also account for platform differences: iPhone and iPad place app preferences in the Settings app, while Mac places them in the Podcasts Settings window.
What Apple Podcasts settings cannot change
- They cannot provide a transcript for an episode that has none or bypass regional transcript availability.
- They cannot turn an audio-only episode into a video episode.
- They cannot make a cellular connection behave like Wi‑Fi when a carrier or system restriction blocks data.
- They cannot guarantee identical labels across every iOS, iPadOS, and macOS release.
Apple describes the overall control set this way: “You can change the playback speed, see what’s playing next, watch or listen to an episode when you’re offline, set a sleep timer, and use other playback controls.” Those controls are distributed across the player, app settings, and show settings rather than exposed on one universal screen.
Quick Recap
A quick checklist before you leave Settings
- Decide whether the change is global, per show, or for the current episode.
- Review automatic downloads and removal of played downloads.
- Separate audio and video choices, especially for cellular data.
- Check Sync Library if devices do not agree.
- Set playback speed in the player, then use a show’s Custom for This Show option if it should persist.
- Use the transcript only when the episode provides one.
- On Mac, review General, Playback, and Advanced separately; each pane controls a different part of the experience.
