Use a Domain property when you want one Search Console view covering every subdomain, protocol and path under a domain and you can edit its DNS. Use a URL-prefix property when reporting must be limited to a particular protocol, host or folder, or when you need to verify ownership with an HTML tag or uploaded file instead of DNS.
You can add both. A Domain property provides the broad account-level picture, while URL-prefix properties let you isolate sections such as https://www.example.com/blog/. The choice changes Search Console’s reporting scope and verification process; it does not change how Google Search handles the site.
Domain property and URL-prefix property at a glance
| Property type | What it covers | Verification requirement | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain | The entered domain, all of its subdomains, every protocol and all paths beneath it | DNS access is required | A single aggregate view of an entire domain |
| URL-prefix | URLs beginning with the exact protocol, host and optional path you enter | Several eligible methods, including DNS, HTML tag or file upload | A specific protocol, host, subfolder or a site where DNS cannot be edited |
| Both | A broad Domain property plus narrowly scoped URL-prefix properties | Each property is verified using its own eligible method | Overall monitoring plus segment-level reporting |
Google’s comparison and setup guidance describes these coverage and verification differences in detail in Add a website or platform property to Search Console.

A Domain property is entered as a domain name without a protocol or path, such as example.com. It combines the domain’s HTTP and HTTPS URLs, its root host and subdomains, and every path under those hosts. Thus, one property for example.com can include:

http://example.com/https://example.com/https://www.example.com/https://m.example.com/https://shop.example.com/products/
The coverage is defined by the domain you enter, not by whichever host currently receives most visitors. Google’s Domain property documentation explains that protocols, subdomains and paths are aggregated under that domain.
What it does not include
Domain-property coverage follows the DNS hierarchy. A property for fish.example.com covers that child domain and its descendants, but it does not include the parent example.com, www.example.com or sibling subdomains. Conversely, a property for example.com includes fish.example.com.
A Domain property also does not merge unrelated domains. If a company operates example.com and example.org, each needs its own property.

A URL-prefix property starts with a complete URL prefix, including its protocol. You can optionally add a path. Search Console includes only URLs that begin with exactly that prefix.
Protocol and host are part of the scope
The prefix https://example.com does not include http://example.com, https://www.example.com or https://m.example.com. To report on those variants separately, add matching URL-prefix properties. This exactness is useful when HTTP and HTTPS are being migrated, when a mobile host is operated independently, or when a team owns one subdomain but not the others.
Paths can narrow the property further
A prefix such as https://example.com/pets/ includes URLs beneath that folder, for example https://example.com/pets/dogs.html. It excludes https://example.com/cats/, the site root and a similarly named path outside the prefix. It also excludes the HTTP version and the same path on another host.
Path scoping lets you give a content team a focused view of a documentation area, store, campaign folder or international section without mixing its metrics with the rest of the site.

“Domain-level” is not the same as a Domain property
Google uses domain-level property as a separate term. A URL-prefix such as https://example.com may look domain-wide because it has no path, but it is still a URL-prefix property: the protocol is specified, so HTTP and other hosts are outside its scope. Google’s terminology is documented at Domain-level property.
When instructions say “add the domain,” check whether they mean the Domain property option (entered without a protocol) or a URL-prefix that happens to point at the site root. The distinction determines both coverage and verification.
Choose by the reporting question you need to answer
Choose a Domain property for an all-variant view
- You want one place to inspect performance for the root domain and every subdomain.
- HTTP-to-HTTPS migration reporting should remain in one property.
- You need paths from several hosts aggregated rather than maintained as separate properties.
- You control the domain’s DNS records or can ask the DNS administrator to add the verification record.
This is the usual starting point for a site owner who controls the whole domain. One verified property avoids creating a separate Search Console entry for every host and protocol.
Choose a URL-prefix property for controlled boundaries
- You only administer one host, such as
www.example.comordocs.example.com. - A folder, language section or application needs its own report.
- You must distinguish HTTPS from HTTP during a transition or investigation.
- You cannot change DNS but can place an HTML tag in the page source or upload a verification file.
URL-prefix properties are also practical for agencies or contractors who should see one site segment rather than the entire organization’s domain.

Use both when aggregate and diagnostic views are important
A common arrangement is a verified Domain property for executive or site-wide reporting plus URL-prefix properties for the production host, a staging-independent public host, or major folders. Select the property that matches the question before opening Performance, Indexing or other reports; the same URL can appear in a broad property and in a narrower property by design.
Verification requirements and methods
Domain property: DNS is mandatory
Google requires DNS-record verification for Domain properties. In Search Console, the verification dialog supplies a record value. Add that record at the authoritative DNS provider for the domain, wait for DNS publication, then return to Search Console and select Verify. If you cannot edit DNS, you cannot complete Domain-property verification yourself; ask the domain administrator to perform the record change or use an eligible URL-prefix property instead.
URL-prefix property: several methods may be available
URL-prefix properties can offer DNS verification and, depending on eligibility and site configuration, methods such as an HTML tag or an uploaded file. Google’s ownership guide, Verify your site ownership, lists the available methods and their requirements.

The HTML-tag method requires that you can edit the HTML source of the relevant page and that the page is publicly accessible. The tag must remain in place for ownership to continue. File upload similarly requires access to the site’s publicly served files. Search Console displays only methods it can use for the property and account context, so the exact list can differ between sites.
How to add and verify a Domain property
- Sign in to Search Console and open the property selector.
- Select + Add property.
- Choose Domain, then enter the domain only, for example
example.com. Do not addhttp://,https://or a path. - Continue to the verification screen and copy the DNS record Google provides.
- At the authoritative DNS host, create the requested record for the domain. Preserve the value exactly as shown.
- Return to Search Console and choose Verify. DNS propagation can take time; if verification fails immediately, wait and try again rather than creating a different property.
- After successful verification, select the new property from the property selector to view its reports.
The property definition and coverage rules are summarized in Google’s Domain property help page.
How to add and verify a URL-prefix property
- Open the Search Console property selector and choose + Add property.
- Select URL-prefix.
- Enter the complete prefix, including protocol and any path, such as
https://www.example.com/orhttps://example.com/pets/. Use the exact variant you intend to measure. - Choose one of the verification methods offered. For an HTML tag, copy Google’s tag into the
<head>of the relevant publicly accessible page. For file upload, place the supplied file at the required location without changing its contents. DNS is another option when you control the domain. - Complete the method, return to Search Console and select Verify.
- Repeat the process for each additional protocol, host or path that needs separate URL-prefix reporting.
Google’s setup instructions and property comparison are available at Add a website or platform property to Search Console. A URL-prefix does not automatically expand because redirects, canonical tags or shared hosting connect it to another URL; the prefix itself defines membership.

Data collection, ownership and timing
Google states that Search Console begins collecting data when a property is added, even before ownership verification is completed. Verification establishes that you are authorized to access the property; it does not retroactively create a different data set. Reports may take a few days to populate.
If a newly added property appears empty, first confirm that the entered URL variant is correct. A report for https://www.example.com will not display URLs that belong only to an HTTP or non-www prefix. For a broad view, check the corresponding Domain property. Google’s setup guidance covers data timing and variant matching at Add a website or platform property to Search Console.
Adding a property does not modify crawling, indexing, rankings, redirects or server behavior. It only creates a reporting and ownership entry in your Search Console account.
Special cases
Google-hosted properties
Google-hosted properties such as Google Sites or Blogger may be verified automatically when you are signed in to the account that manages the property. If automatic verification is not offered, use one of the methods displayed by Search Console.

HTTP-to-HTTPS migrations
During a migration, a Domain property keeps both protocols in one aggregate view. URL-prefix properties require separate entries if you need to inspect HTTP and HTTPS independently. Keeping the old HTTP prefix temporarily can help you monitor residual URLs while the HTTPS property becomes the operational focus.
Subdomain ownership boundaries
If different teams control different subdomains, a Domain property may be too broad for access governance even though it is technically convenient. A URL-prefix property for each team’s host limits the URLs visible in that property. Coordinate permissions separately in Search Console; property type determines URL scope, not who should receive access.

Search Console itself is a free service, so choosing a Domain property does not create a subscription charge. The practical cost is administrative: someone must add and maintain the DNS record, while each URL-prefix may require a separate tag, file or DNS verification asset. A DNS provider or registrar might charge for unrelated domain services, but Google does not require a paid product to create either property type.
Use clear names in your internal documentation, such as “Domain — example.com,” “URL-prefix — HTTPS www,” and “URL-prefix — Docs.” This prevents a team member from opening a narrow property and mistaking its totals for domain-wide performance. Property access is granted to users in Search Console independently of the property type, so a broad property should not be shared with a team that only needs one host or folder.
When several properties overlap, expect their totals to differ. A URL can legitimately appear in both example.com and https://www.example.com/blog/; overlap is useful for validation, not evidence of duplicate indexing or duplicate traffic.
Precision details that prevent confusing reports
- Check the complete prefix: protocol, hostname and path all matter.
https://example.comandhttps://www.example.comare different properties. - Use the intended folder boundary: enter the path exactly as it is served. A property for
/blog/is narrower than one for the host root, and a misspelled or differently formatted path can leave reports empty. - Do not rely on redirects or canonicals to widen scope: those signals do not turn an HTTP prefix into HTTPS or one host into another for property reporting.
- Remember that a Domain property is hierarchical: selecting
shop.example.comas a Domain property does not bring in the parent or sibling hosts. - Allow for collection time: adding a property starts collection, but Search Console can need a few days before useful report data appears.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Entering a protocol in the Domain option: Remove
https://and any path. Protocols belong in URL-prefix properties. - Expecting a URL-prefix to include another host: Add a property for each required host, or use a verified Domain property.
- Choosing the wrong path boundary: Check trailing slashes and folder spelling. A prefix for
/blog/is not the same as the site root or a similarly named folder. - Trying to verify a Domain property with an HTML tag: Domain properties require DNS. Switch to URL-prefix if DNS access is unavailable.
- Checking reports before data appears: Confirm the exact property and allow a few days for collection.
- Assuming a child-domain property covers the parent: It does not. Add the parent Domain property or the needed parent URL-prefix.
- Removing the verification asset: Keep the DNS record, HTML tag or uploaded file in place as required by the selected method, or ownership may be lost.
A practical selection checklist
- List every protocol, host and path you need to analyze.
- Decide whether those variants should be aggregated or separated.
- Check whether you can edit DNS for the relevant domain.
- Select Domain for broad aggregation, URL-prefix for an exact boundary, or both for layered reporting.
- Add the property using the exact syntax for its type.
- Complete verification and confirm that the property selector shows the intended scope.
- When a report looks incomplete, compare the selected property’s prefix with the URL that is missing.
Bottom line
For a whole-domain dashboard, add a DNS-verified Domain property. For protocol-, host- or folder-specific reporting—or when DNS access is unavailable—add a URL-prefix property using an eligible verification method. Most organizations benefit from keeping the Domain property as the baseline and adding URL-prefix properties only where a narrower operational view is genuinely useful.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Domain property and a URL-prefix property?
A Domain property is entered without a protocol or path and covers the domain, its subdomains, every protocol and all paths. A URL-prefix property begins with a specific protocol and host and can include a path, so it reports only URLs beginning with that exact prefix.

Which property should a new site owner create first?
Create a Domain property first if you control DNS and want a complete view of the domain. Add URL-prefix properties later for a particular host, folder, protocol or team.
Can I verify a Domain property with an HTML tag?
No. Google requires DNS-record verification for Domain properties. If you cannot edit DNS, create a URL-prefix property and use an eligible HTML-tag, file-upload or other offered method.
Does https://example.com include www.example.com?
No. That is a URL-prefix property for the HTTPS version of the exact host example.com. It excludes HTTP and hosts such as www.example.com and m.example.com.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a property for fish.example.com include example.com?
No. A child-domain property covers that child domain and its descendants, not the parent domain or sibling subdomains. Use a Domain property for example.com to include them.
Should I add both property types?
Often, yes. Use the Domain property for aggregate reporting and URL-prefix properties for diagnostic or operational views of a host, folder or protocol. Overlapping properties are expected.
How long does Search Console take to show data after adding a property?
Google begins collecting when the property is added, but reports may take a few days to populate. If data remains absent, verify that the protocol, host and path match the URLs you expect.
Does adding a property affect rankings or indexing?
No. Adding a property only creates a Search Console reporting and ownership entry. It does not change crawling, indexing, rankings, redirects or server behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Choose Domain for breadth and URL-prefix for precision. A DNS-verified Domain property consolidates protocols, subdomains and paths, while a URL-prefix property isolates one exact protocol, host or folder and offers more verification choices. Add both when you need an overall view alongside focused diagnostics.
