Start at your profile menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. That area contains Facebook’s controls for profile details, finding and contacting you, posts, stories, pages, reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking. The exact labels and available choices can differ between the Facebook app, desktop site, mobile browser, account type, and profile type, so use the live screen as the final authority.
Privacy settings answer different questions: who can see a particular post, whether people can find you by email or phone number, what appears on your profile, what activity Facebook stores about your account, and what information is shared with businesses and organizations outside Meta. Review each category separately rather than assuming one setting protects everything.
Find Facebook’s main privacy controls
Facebook’s documented route is Profile menu > Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. The Help Center describes this area in “View and adjust your privacy settings”. On some accounts, the menu may be reorganized or show slightly different wording. If a label is missing, search the Settings page for the category instead of relying on an older screenshot or printed guide.

These categories are separate. Restricting the audience for a post does not, by itself, change who can find your profile, see a profile detail, or view a friendship revealed through another person’s profile.

“How do I control who can see what I share on Facebook?”
Choose an audience before posting
- Create a post, photo, video, reel, or other share as usual.
- Before selecting Post or Share, open the audience control next to your name or the sharing button.
- Choose from the options shown for that item, such as Public, Friends, or Only me. Facebook may show additional choices depending on the content and account.
- Confirm the audience label, then publish. If the label is not what you intended, cancel the share and select the correct audience.
Facebook states that content selected as Public is public information. A profile-level privacy change does not turn a public post into a private one; the audience selected for the individual share is the relevant control. When in doubt, check the audience selector every time you publish something sensitive.
Review default sharing choices
Open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Posts, then inspect the options available on your account. The exact names can vary by device and profile type. This review helps you set a normal starting audience, but still check the selector on an individual post because different formats can expose different controls.
Check stories and reels separately
Stories and reels have their own entries in Audience and visibility. Open each section and review its audience rather than assuming the Posts setting applies to it. A story audience and a reel audience can be presented independently in the live interface.

Use Privacy Checkup as a guided review
Facebook’s Privacy Checkup is designed to walk through major sharing and visibility choices. Open it from the privacy and settings area, then follow the prompts for profile information, posts, and discoverability. The available steps can change as Facebook updates its interface.
Use the checkup to verify three things:
- The audience shown for ordinary posts matches what you normally intend.
- Profile details such as basic information are not visible more broadly than necessary.
- People-finding options, including suggestions based on your email address or phone number, reflect how discoverable you want to be.
Privacy Checkup is a review tool, not a guarantee that every copy of information elsewhere has disappeared. It is still useful for finding settings that are easy to overlook. Facebook discusses public information, discoverability, and Privacy Checkup in “Data scraping and what can you do to protect your information on Facebook.”
Separate profile visibility from discoverability
Control profile details
In Audience and visibility > Profile details, inspect each field that Facebook lets you manage. Decide who should see basic information and other details displayed on your profile. A profile detail’s audience is different from the audience for a post, so review both.

Control how people find and contact you
Open Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you. Facebook identifies controls for profile suggestions based on an email address or phone number, along with visibility of basic profile information. These settings govern discoverability; they do not simply change the audience of content you have already shared.
For example, you might allow Friends to see a post while limiting whether people who have your telephone number receive a profile suggestion. Treat those as two independent decisions and check both in the same session.
Review followers and public content
The Followers and public content section covers choices associated with people who follow you and content marked public. If you do not want broad visibility, pay particular attention to anything labeled Public. Facebook’s definition is literal: material selected as Public is public information.
Adjust your Friends section—and understand its limit
Facebook’s current Help Center says the Friends section is public by default. To change the audience shown on your own profile, use this path:
- Open Settings & privacy > Settings.
- Select Audience and visibility.
- Open How people find and contact you.
- Select Who can see your friends list?
- Choose the audience offered by Facebook and save the change.
This setting controls the friends list displayed on your profile. It cannot control what your friends reveal on their own profiles. A friendship may still be visible elsewhere, including through mutual-friends information, if another person’s settings expose it. In other words, hiding your list is useful but cannot make every connection invisible across Facebook.

Manage profile, tagging, pages, and blocking controls
Profile and tagging
Open Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging to review what can appear on your profile when you or another person tags content. Read each prompt carefully: a choice about appearing on your profile is not necessarily the same as removing the original post from the person who shared it.
Pages
The Pages section contains page-related visibility controls where Facebook makes them available for your account. If you use a personal profile and manage pages, check this category separately from personal post settings.
Blocking
Use Audience and visibility > Blocking to inspect blocked accounts and related blocking options. Blocking is a direct interaction control; it is not a replacement for setting an audience on posts or restricting profile discoverability.

Privacy settings show who can see information, while Access your information helps you inspect information associated with your account. Facebook also surfaces relevant information and permissions in Accounts Center; the exact path and labels can vary by device and account.
Look for categories such as:
- Activity
- Personal information
- Connections
- Logged information
- Security and login
- Off-Facebook apps and websites
- Preferences
- Ads
Use the live Accounts Center or Settings search if you do not see an item named exactly “Access your information.” Facebook describes these categories and related tools in “Access or download information about your activity in Facebook groups.”
Download a copy of your information
Facebook provides download controls that can cover all categories or only selected categories. You can also choose a date range where the interface offers one. A focused download is useful when you need a particular period or type of activity without requesting everything.

- Open Access your information or the corresponding information-and-permissions area in Accounts Center.
- Choose the download or export option shown for your account.
- Select all categories or specific categories.
- Set the date range and other available format or media choices.
- Review the selection before requesting the file, then follow Facebook’s prompts to create and retrieve it.
Facebook also offers transfer to another service. The destination choices and steps are account-dependent, so follow the current transfer flow rather than an older tutorial.
Use Activity Log to review and manage what you have done
Activity Log is the practical place to review and manage Facebook activity. Open it from your profile or settings area using the current label shown by Facebook. The documented Activity Log page is “Manage what you’ve shared on Facebook.”
The default display covers the current year. Use its filters and categories to locate activity, then apply the management action Facebook offers for that entry. The action may differ by item, so read the confirmation screen instead of assuming every entry can be treated the same way.
Do not confuse the log with every copy of a post
Facebook notes that stories shown in Activity Log may also appear in Feed, Search, or friends’ News Feeds. Therefore, hiding or managing an entry in the log should not be described as removing every appearance or copy. Activity Log is an account-management view, not a universal eraser for content that other people can see or have retained.

Facebook identifies a separate tool for viewing or clearing activity from businesses and organizations visited outside Meta. Look under Access your information or the relevant Accounts Center information area for an option referring to activity from businesses and organizations.
Use the screen Facebook currently provides to view the activity first. The exact current route and the precise consequences of clearing it are not consistently explained in the available help material, so do not assume that clearing instantly deletes every record held by a business, removes an account, or reverses actions you took on that business’s site. Treat the tool as a way to inspect and manage the activity connection Facebook presents, and read any confirmation text before proceeding.

A practical review order
If you want a complete review without jumping between unrelated menus, work through these checks in order:
- Posts: confirm the normal audience and test the audience selector on a draft or low-risk share before publishing sensitive content.
- Stories and reels: open each category and verify its audience independently.
- Profile details: inspect every field that is visible on your profile.
- Discoverability: review email- and phone-based profile suggestions and other “find and contact” options.
- Friends section: change the audience if you do not want your own list displayed publicly, while remembering that friends’ profiles can still reveal connections.
- Profile and tagging: check what can appear on your profile when you or someone else tags content.
- Followers and public content: identify anything set to Public and decide whether public followers or interactions are appropriate.
- Blocking: confirm that blocked accounts and related controls match your needs.
- Access and activity: inspect account categories, download selected information if needed, and review Activity Log.
- Off-Meta activity: locate the view/clear tool and read its current explanation before changing anything.
Common problems and how to handle them
The menu name does not match
Facebook changes labels and layouts across desktop, app, mobile browser, account type, and profile type. Start from the profile menu, open Settings & privacy, and search within Settings for terms such as “Audience,” “visibility,” “Activity Log,” or “Access your information.” Follow the option that appears on your account rather than forcing an older path.
A setting is unavailable
Some controls vary by profile type and by the feature you are using. Check the corresponding category—Posts, Stories, Reels, Followers and public content, or Profile and tagging—because a control may not be located under the general profile section.
You changed a profile setting but content is still visible
Check the audience on the individual post, story, or reel. Also check whether the information is visible through another person’s profile, a tagged item, a public interaction, or the Friends section. A setting on your profile cannot control what another person chooses to reveal.
You cannot find downloaded information
Return to the information-and-permissions area in Accounts Center and check the status of the requested download. If you selected categories or a date range, confirm that the request matches what you need before creating another one.
