Instagram has two separate privacy controls: Activity Status hides whether you are online or were recently active, while read receipts control whether a direct-message sender is told that you read their message. To hide both, turn off each setting separately under Settings → Messages and story replies. Disabling Activity Status is reciprocal: you also lose the ability to see other eligible accounts’ activity status.
What each Instagram privacy setting hides
These controls answer different questions, so changing one does not change the other.

Instagram’s Help Center describes Activity Status as the indicator people you follow and people you message may use to see when you are active or when you were last active. Meta describes read receipts separately as the feature that lets others know a message has been read. Treat them as independent switches: turning off Activity Status does not turn off read receipts, and turning off read receipts does not hide your online presence.

If someone can tell that you are currently online, recently active, or active in the same conversation, the relevant control is Show activity status. If the issue is a message label or signal indicating that you opened a direct message, the relevant control is Show read receipts.

These signals can appear in the same direct-message experience, which is why they are often confused. Reading a message does not prove that you are currently online, and an online indicator does not prove that you opened a particular message. Decide whether you want to hide presence, message reading, or both before changing settings.
Turn off Activity Status
In the Instagram app
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the menu, then choose Settings.
- Select Messages and story replies.
- Choose Show activity status.
- Switch the control off.
The wording above follows Instagram’s documented route. Instagram can move controls or change labels as the app is updated, so use the closest matching settings names if your version presents the menu differently.
On a computer
- Open Instagram in a browser and sign in.
- Open the More menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Messages and story replies.
- Choose Show activity status and turn it off.
Instagram’s Help Center documents both app and computer variants, but the exact placement can vary with the current interface.

People who follow you and people you message will no longer get the Activity Status signal covered by this setting. You also lose access to the corresponding status information for other accounts. Instagram specifically says you will not be able to see whether eligible accounts are active, were active recently, or are active in the same chat as you.
This is a reciprocal privacy choice rather than a one-way invisibility mode. If you need to check whether someone else is online, you must have Activity Status enabled, accepting that eligible people can see your status as well.
What Activity Status does not do
- It does not mark direct messages as unread after you have opened them.
- It does not switch off read receipts.
- It is not documented as a per-conversation setting; Instagram describes it as a reciprocal account-level control.
- It does not promise that every trace of your use of Instagram disappears. It controls the activity-status signal described by Instagram.
Turn off read receipts for all chats
Use the account-wide control
- Open Instagram and enter your account settings.
- Select Messages and story replies.
- Choose Show read receipts.
- Switch the control off.
Meta announced this account-wide control on March 4, 2024, in its official Instagram direct-message update. The setting governs the read-receipt signal—the notification to another person that you have read a message—not your Activity Status.

Meta describes read receipts as a way to let others know that a message has been read. With the global switch off, the read-receipt behavior applies across your chats according to the account’s current settings. The announcement establishes the setting and its purpose, but it does not provide a device- and region-specific availability matrix. If the option is absent, the account may be seeing a different interface or rollout state.
Control receipts for one chat
Meta also says Instagram supports read-receipt controls for specific chats. To look for that option, open the relevant direct-message conversation and inspect its conversation information, message, or privacy controls. The exact taps are not fixed in Meta’s announcement, and Instagram’s labels can differ between app versions, devices, accounts, and regions, so do not assume that a path shown on another phone will be identical to yours.
A chat-specific choice is useful when you want to keep read receipts in most conversations but suppress them in one conversation. An account-wide choice is simpler when you want the same behavior everywhere.
Important limits of the read-receipt setting
- It controls the read signal; it is not an online-presence switch.
- Turning it off does not create the reciprocal Activity Status trade-off. That trade-off belongs to the activity setting.
- Meta confirms both all-chat and specific-chat controls, but does not establish that every account has identical per-chat labels or availability.
- If you cannot find the control, avoid assuming that a third-party screenshot reflects your account’s current interface.
Choose the right combination
You want to hide only your online presence
Disable Show activity status and leave Show read receipts enabled. This hides the online or recently-active signal while leaving the separate message-read setting unchanged. Remember that the status trade-off is reciprocal: you will not see other eligible accounts’ status either.
You want to stop sending read signals but remain visible online
Disable Show read receipts and leave Show activity status enabled. Your online-presence signal remains governed by Activity Status, while the read-receipt signal is controlled independently.
You want both signals hidden
Turn off both switches. Complete the Activity Status route and the read-receipt route separately; there is no single master control that replaces both settings.

You want a targeted change
Keep the global read-receipt setting as appropriate for most conversations, then check the individual chat’s message or privacy controls for a per-chat option. Activity Status is documented as an account-level setting, while Meta documents read-receipt controls at both all-chat and specific-chat levels.

What people can and cannot infer
Activity Status is not a message-read indicator
An active or recently-active label indicates presence, not that a particular message was opened. Conversely, hiding Activity Status does not by itself suppress the read-receipt signal. Use the read-receipt control for that purpose.
A read receipt is not an online-presence indicator
A read-receipt setting concerns a message being read. It does not replace Activity Status or change the documented reciprocal rule attached to that setting.

The controls do not guarantee identical screens
Instagram’s Help Center shows app and computer routes for Activity Status. Meta’s read-receipt announcement gives the global settings route and confirms specific-chat controls, but it does not establish that every account sees the same labels or controls at the same time. Differences can reflect the device interface, account rollout, or region. Use the setting names as the anchor rather than relying on a screenshot from a different version.
Do not confuse privacy settings with message deletion
Neither switch deletes a conversation, removes a message, or changes who can send you a direct message. They only govern the presence or read signals described above. If your concern is the content of a conversation, review Instagram’s separate messaging and account-privacy tools rather than expecting these switches to change message access.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective setting
The Activity Status option is hard to find
- Start from Settings, then look for Messages and story replies rather than an older menu category.
- Search the settings screen for “activity status” if your Instagram version offers settings search.
- On desktop, begin with More → Settings, as described by Instagram’s Help Center.
- Check the app and browser separately; their menu layouts do not have to match.
Do not assume that an older path is still current. Instagram changes navigation, while the underlying control remains identified as Show activity status.

The read-receipt option is missing
- Open account settings and look specifically under Messages and story replies.
- Look for Show read receipts, the label used in Meta’s announcement.
- For one conversation, open that chat and inspect its information or privacy controls for a receipt switch.
- If the account-wide control or chat-specific control is absent, treat that as an interface or availability difference; the announcement does not promise a universal device- or region-wide rollout.
You changed one switch but still see the other signal
Recheck which signal you are observing. Seeing an online or recently-active indicator points to Activity Status; a message-read indication points to read receipts. Because the controls are separate, changing one will not remove the other.

You can no longer see other people’s status
That result is expected when Activity Status is disabled. Instagram’s documented reciprocal rule removes your ability to see eligible accounts’ active, recently-active, or same-chat status. Re-enable the setting if that visibility is more important than hiding your own status.
The switch appears to change back
Return to the same settings page and confirm the control’s current position rather than relying on what you remember selecting. Check the account you are actually using, especially if you switch between multiple Instagram accounts. If the menu differs between a browser and the app, use the interface in which you intend the setting to apply and look for the same named control.
A friend still sees a signal
First identify whether they are describing online activity or a message-read indication. Those are separate signals. Then verify the matching switch and remember that interfaces can vary by account, device, or region. Do not infer that one visible signal proves the other setting is enabled.
A privacy-minded setup checklist
- Decide whether your concern is presence, message reading, or both.
- For presence, open Settings → Messages and story replies → Show activity status and turn it off.
- For all-chat read receipts, open account settings → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts and turn it off.
- If only one conversation requires a different rule, inspect that chat’s message or privacy controls for the specific-chat receipt option Meta documents.
- After changing a setting, return to the same screen and confirm the switch remains in the intended position.
- Tell yourself which trade-off applies: Activity Status is reciprocal; read receipts can be configured globally or, where available, per chat.
- When troubleshooting, compare the exact signal you observe with the setting intended to control it.
- Recheck after an app update because menu placement and labels may change even when the feature’s purpose remains the same.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning off only Activity Status: this does not suppress a read indication on a direct message.
- Turning off only read receipts: this does not hide whether you are online or recently active.
- Expecting one-way invisibility: Activity Status is reciprocal, so hiding yours also hides other eligible accounts’ status from you.
- Following an old screenshot exactly: Instagram may place the controls differently on another device or account.
- Assuming per-chat Activity Status: the documented Activity Status control is account-level, while the documented per-chat scope applies to read receipts.
- Assuming universal rollout: Meta’s announcement confirms the features but does not provide a complete device- and region-availability matrix.
Official feature history and terminology
Meta’s March 4, 2024 announcement, “Edit Your Messages, Pin Your Chats and More Instagram DM Updates,” describes read receipts as a way to let others know that a message has been read and introduces both the all-chat control and specific-chat controls. Instagram’s Help Center separately documents enabling or disabling Activity Status, including the reciprocal effect when it is turned off.
Those descriptions explain why the settings should not be conflated: one is a presence signal and the other is a message-read signal. Instagram may revise menu placement, but the setting names and their distinct purposes are the useful anchors when navigating a current account.
