How to Enable Clean Boot in Windows 10

Introduction

This guide demos steps to Enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10. “Clean Boot” is a Windows troubleshooting tool that starts Windows with minimal services and drivers.

This allows you to determine which program or service that may be stopping your computer from booting.

Warning!
Before you proceed with the steps in this guide it is recommended to create a local administrator account.
To be able to Enable “Clean Boot”, you will need to boot Windows 10 to Safe Mode. This is because, in most circumstances when you need to Enable “Clean Boot” your computer is likely not to be able to boot to Windows.

Steps to Enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10

  1. Open System Configuration Tool
  2. Disable Non-Critical Services
  3. Disable Startup Programs

Open System Configuration Tool

The first step to enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10 is to open MSConfig.

Here are the steps:

  • Press Windows logo + R keys simultaneously. This will open Run command.
  • At Run command, type MSConfig and click OK.

Disable Non-Critical Services


Once you have opened MSConfig tool, the next step is to disable services that Windows do no not need to run.

Here are the steps to disable non-critical services as part of the steps to enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10:

  • From System Config tool, click Services tab.
  • At Services tab, check the box beside Hide all Microsoft services.

  • Then click Disable all. Once you click Disable all, Enable all button will become active. This is how you know that you have actually disabled all non-critical services.

Disable Startup Programs

The final step to enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10 is to disable startup programs.

Here is how:

  • Still on System Configuration tool, click Startup tab.
  • Then click Open Task Manager.
  • When Task Manager Startup tab opens, select each program in the list. Then click Disable. Disable all the programs in the list.
  • To confirm that a program is disabled, when you click on it, Enable button will be active. Their Status will also show “Disabled”.
  • Finally close Task Manager. Then, back in MSConfig tool, click Apply and OK.
  • Finally, to completely enable “Clean Boot” in Windows 10, click Restart.
After enabling “Clean Boot”, to determine the service or startup program that may be stopping your computer from booting enable the services and startup programs one at a time. When you enable a service, restart your computer. If the error you are trying to fix is resolved, then you know it is the service or startup program that caused the boot problem.

How to Revert “Clean Boot” Configuration.

After fixing whatever made you to enable “Clean Boot”, you need to revert the configuration.

Here are the steps to revert your computer to “normal boot”:

  • Press Windows logo + R keys simultaneously. This will open Run command.
  • At Run command, type MSConfig and click OK.

  • Click Services tab. Then check the box beside Hide all Microsoft services.
  • Finally, click Enable all. Then click Apply.

To revert Startup programs configuration to their original state:

  • Click Startup tab. Then click Open Task Manager.

  • At Task Manager, Startup tab, select each of the startup programs you disabled earlier. Then click Enable.

  • When you finish, close Task Manager. Then at MSConfig tool, click Apply and OK.
