Employees may voice concerns about workplace AI to an AI interviewer even after giving the same topic a favorable survey rating—but a recent study at one consulting firm does not show that voice interviews are generally more candid. It found that disclosure could remain guarded: workers sometimes softened concerns, deflected responsibility, or limited what they shared.
What the voice-interview study found
A September 30, 2026 arXiv preprint by Thilo Tamme, Michael Saatkamp, Alma Bonte, Daniel Weiss, Anton Hantel, and Andrej Levin examined an adaptive AI voice interview paired with a pre-survey in one global management consulting firm. The survey and interview covered the same themes within one session. The accessible abstract reports 44 first-session interviews and 132 matched theme observations.
Depending on the favorability threshold the researchers applied, 20–41% of sessions included a favorable rating alongside a substantive concern voiced later. This is a range across threshold choices in that study, not a general rate for employees or workplaces. The qualitative analysis drew on 158 “protective quotes” from 65 eligible sessions. What a mismatch between survey and interview does—and does not—mean
A favorable rating followed by a concern is evidence that the two responses co-occurred in this study. It does not prove that the survey answer was dishonest, that the voice interview uncovered a definitive hidden truth, or that the interview caused greater candor. A difference could reflect how a question was understood, the opportunity to elaborate, or a respondent’s choice to qualify an answer; the accessible abstract does not establish which explanation applies in each case.
The preprint is a case study in one organization, and the reported mismatch range depends on the favorability threshold. Its findings should not be treated as a prediction of how employees everywhere will respond to an AI voice agent. The available record is an arXiv preprint; peer-review status is not established here.

How this fits the wider picture of workplace AI
Separate worker surveys show that workplace AI use and digital management are already relevant subjects, but they do not measure whether employees are candid with voice agents.

- EU use and management: The European Commission’s October 21, 2025 summary of the AIM-WORK survey reports that 30% of workers in the EU use AI tools at work, including large-language-model chatbots; text tasks such as writing and translation were common. It also reports that 37% say employers use AI and other tools to monitor working hours, and 24% say their schedules are set automatically. These are reported practices, not measures of disclosure in an interview. European Commission summary.
- Survey scope: The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s methodology record gives the AIM-WORK sample as 70,316 people aged 16–65 across all 27 EU Member States. Fieldwork ran from October 23, 2024, through January 21, 2025, using mobile-only computer-assisted telephone interviewing. - U.S. worker attitudes: In a February 2025 Pew Research Center report, 52% of surveyed U.S. workers said they were worried about how AI might be used in the workplace in the future; 36% felt hopeful, 33% overwhelmed, and 29% excited. These are reported attitudes, not proof that workers hide AI use or that voice interviews change their answers. Pew Research Center report.
Why the listening conditions matter
Workplace listening does not happen apart from power, privacy, and trust. In an August 2024 review, the U.S. Government Accountability Office summarized 217 public comments from 211 stakeholders about automated worker surveillance. Commenters described cameras and microphones, computer monitoring software, geolocation, tracking applications, and wearables. Some described security or safety benefits; workers and unions also raised concerns about stress, morale, privacy, distrust, and possible bias. The Commission’s AIM-WORK summary likewise notes that monitoring and management technologies can increase stress and reduce autonomy, particularly in sectors such as transport and mining. Neither source establishes how employees answer an AI voice interviewer. They provide context for why employees may weigh the consequences of speaking openly.
How to judge surveys against AI voice interviews
Neither a survey nor an adaptive voice conversation is automatically the more candid channel. A useful comparison asks what each method actually does and measures:

- Same topic: Are employees asked about the same theme in both channels, as in the consulting-firm study?
- Fixed or adaptive questions: Does the tool follow a set questionnaire, or can it ask follow-ups? A follow-up may invite detail, but the study does not establish that this produces more honest answers.
- Perceived consequences: Do employees think responses can be linked to them or affect their standing?
- Legitimacy: Do workers view the listening process as a genuine, fair way to gather feedback?
- Data handling: What is known about who can access recordings or transcripts, how long they are retained, and how they will be used?
- Outcome measured: Is the comparison about candor, detail, comfort, or simply how much a person says? More words alone do not demonstrate greater honesty.
The accessible abstract does not establish all of these conditions for the paired channels, and it does not report a randomized test of whether voice format changes disclosure.
What organizations should explain before asking
Because the study links protective framing to the perceived legitimacy of the listening structure, organizations should make the rules clear before inviting sensitive feedback. This is a practical safeguard inferred from the study and the surveillance concerns cited above, not an intervention tested by the study.

- Identify who can access recordings, transcripts, and summaries.
- Explain whether responses can be linked to individual employees and how the information may affect workplace decisions.
- State how recordings and transcripts will be used and retained.
- Give employees a clear account of the purpose of the interview and any applicable protections.
Without that context, organizations may hear answers that are carefully bounded and mistake participation for full disclosure.
