The right phone app blocker depends on what you want it to stop: a few distracting apps, websites too, or access to the phone for a set period. Start with the controls already on your phone; consider a separate app when you need features such as recurring schedules, cross-device blocking, or a deliberate pause before opening an app.
This is a curated shortlist, not a tested ranking. The available product descriptions establish different feature sets, but do not show that one blocker is more effective than the others.

iPhone: Apple Screen Time
Screen Time provides the built-in baseline for app limits and Downtime. An Associated Press overview describes those controls and notes that limits may be easy to bypass. If your needs are modest, try Screen Time before installing another service; a third-party app should not be assumed to override Apple’s platform controls. Read the AP overview of Screen Time.

Android: Digital Wellbeing
Google’s Digital Wellbeing includes app timers and Focus mode. Google’s help page also explains how to set an app time limit to zero and use an app-limits PIN. These controls may be enough if you want to limit selected apps without adding another app. See Google’s instructions for Digital Wellbeing.

Pick the type of restriction you actually need
- App limits: Stop an app after a daily allowance.
- Recurring schedules: Block selected apps during work, study, or sleep hours.
- Website blocking: Add websites to the restriction, rather than blocking only their apps.
- Opening friction: Add a pause or prompt before an app opens, giving you a moment to reconsider.
- Whole-phone lockout: Restrict most phone use for a period, while keeping essential apps or emergency calling available if the tool supports them.
- Cross-device control: Apply restrictions across multiple devices or platforms, if that is part of your routine.
Stricter controls can make it harder to reach distractions, but may also make essential access more awkward. Check whether the tool has an allowlist for necessary apps and how its strict mode can be exited before relying on it.

- Freedom: Describes app and website blocking across iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chrome devices. Its separate iOS product, Limit, uses Apple Screen Time and says it can cover up to 49 selected items; that is distinct from Freedom’s broader service. Check Freedom’s product information.
Android options for tighter controls and routines
- Stay Focused: Offers schedules, app and website blocking, usage tracking, and Strict Mode. Its listing says Accessibility and Device Administrator permissions are optional; review the permissions and their purpose before enabling them.
- AppBlock: Blocks apps, websites, and social media on Android, making it a candidate if you want more than app-only restrictions.
- ScreenZen: Uses pause-before-open prompts, usage goals, and schedules, with optional blocking at a limit. It suits people who prefer a pause or goal-based nudge over an immediate hard lock.
- Keep Me Out: Provides quick or scheduled phone locks and location-based locks, with allowed apps and emergency calling described as available. Check which apps remain accessible during a lock.
- Clearspace: Combines app blocking and limits with pause prompts, challenges, and reports.
- Forest: Pairs a focus timer with scheduled blocks and an app allowlist. Its listing says Time Guard uses AccessibilityService to detect active apps; review that permission before use.
How to choose without making your phone harder to use
- Try the built-in control first. Set an app limit or schedule and see whether it addresses the specific distraction.
- Choose the restriction type. If the distraction is a website as well as an app, look for both. If you need an uninterrupted interval, look for scheduled or session blocking; if you mainly open an app reflexively, consider a pause prompt.
- Check the escape route and allowlist. Confirm whether essential apps remain available, what strict mode prevents, and how you can exit a block when needed.
- Review device support and permissions. Verify your phone’s operating-system compatibility, the current feature set in your regional store, and any permissions the app requests. Accessibility or administrator access can enable blocking features, but should be understood before granting.
- Compare ongoing limits and cost. Check the current free-tier restrictions, subscription terms, and whether cross-device use is included in the plan you want.
What a blocker can—and cannot—promise
App-store ratings, vendor claims, and individual anecdotes are not comparable evidence that one blocker works better than another. No independent comparison of the named apps establishes a most-effective choice. Treat claims about reduced screen time as vendor-reported unless supported by independent evidence, and choose by fit: the restrictions you need, the friction you can tolerate, and the controls you can maintain.
