You can remove some unwanted Android apps, but not every app that came with your phone can be uninstalled. Start with the reversible controls in Settings: disable a built-in app if your phone offers that option, or archive it if supported and you mainly want to free space. Use ADB only when you understand the package you are changing and have checked how to restore it on your specific device.
First, identify what kind of app you want to remove
An app you installed yourself and an app built into the phone may have different removal options. Google says some preinstalled system apps cannot be deleted; on some phones, they can be disabled instead. Whether a built-in app can be removed or disabled depends on the manufacturer, model, Android version, and the app’s role.
Before changing anything, open the app’s information page in Settings and check which controls your phone provides. If it is a built-in app and the available options are unclear, follow your phone manufacturer’s guidance. Google also directs users to the manufacturer for help with disabling built-in apps.
Choose the least disruptive option that meets your goal

Uninstall an app you installed
Google’s Play Store route is a good starting point for an app you downloaded. Labels and steps can differ on older Android versions.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & devices and Manage.
- Select the app you want to remove and tap Uninstall.
Google says a deleted or disabled app can be added back. If the app came with the phone and Play Store does not offer an uninstall option, check its App info page in Settings instead.
Disable a preinstalled app in Settings
For a built-in app, open its App info page from Settings and look for a Disable control. The route to App info and the available controls vary by phone, so there is no single menu path that applies to all Android devices. If you cannot find the control, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

Disabling is not the same as uninstalling: it turns off an eligible app rather than removing it through the ordinary uninstall flow. Google’s guidance states, “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Android phone.” The option to disable them is also available only on some phones.

Archiving may be a better fit than removal if you rarely use an app but want to retain its icon and data. Google says archiving removes the app’s software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications. The feature is not available on every device, and restoring the app depends on its continued availability in the relevant store.

Use ADB only when you can identify and recover the change
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) exposes package-manager commands such as pm uninstall, disable, and disable-user. Its documentation also describes uninstalling for a specified user and listing categories such as system packages (-s) and third-party packages (-3). Those filters classify packages; they do not tell you whether a particular package is safe to remove.
ADB acts on package names, not the app labels you see on screen. A mistaken choice may affect a function you rely on, and the effect can vary by device. Do not treat a generic package list as a safe removal recipe.

- Look up the exact package name for the app on your device and verify that it corresponds to the app you intend to change.
- Check the manufacturer’s device-specific guidance and consider what functions could depend on the package.
- Before using a package-manager command, record the package name and make sure you know the device-specific route to re-enable or restore it.
- Use the relevant command only after those checks. Android’s official ADB reference documents the package-manager commands and options; command availability does not establish that a package is safe to remove.
There is no universal recovery procedure established for every handset. Google says deleted or disabled apps can be added back, but that is not a guarantee that every preinstalled component will restore identically on every device.
Do not mistake unused-app management for removal
Android’s unused-app management can clear temporary files, revoke permissions, limit background activity, and stop notifications. These measures manage an unused app; they do not show that it has been uninstalled. See Google’s guidance on managing unused apps.
