Usually, no—not as a way to create viewing rights you do not already have. A VPN can change the network location a service sees, but it does not change the NFL’s broadcast agreements, local-market rules, blackout terms, subscription eligibility, or device limits. NFL+ live regular-season and postseason games are limited to games available on television in your local market and to national broadcasts.
Game availability depends on the specific matchup, your market, the service carrying that broadcast, and the device you use. The official NFL Ways to Watch schedule is the best starting point. Check it close to kickoff, then read the terms for the service you plan to use.
What a VPN changes—and what it does not
A virtual private network routes your traffic through another server and may make a website estimate a different network location. That can affect which location a platform detects, but it does not transfer a television-market entitlement to your account. The service still decides whether it is authorized to show the game under its contracts and terms.
The NFL’s official subscription terms describe availability as location-dependent and say that content can vary by geographic location, viewing platform, and device. They do not establish that every VPN is detected, that every VPN connection is blocked, or that all distributors enforce location checks in the same way. The supported conclusion is narrower: changing an apparent network location does not itself make an unavailable game authorized for viewing.

If the game is not offered to viewers in your market, a VPN is not a substitute for a package or broadcaster that is authorized to carry it there. If the game is authorized but playback fails, a VPN may also complicate troubleshooting because the service can receive conflicting location signals from your account, network, browser, or device.
How NFL game availability is divided
Before choosing any app or subscription, identify which category the game falls into. The rules are different for local broadcasts, national windows, preseason games, and mobile-only offerings.
| Game or broadcast type | What the official NFL information says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Regular-season games on NFL+ | Live games are limited to games available on television in the viewer’s local market and to national broadcasts. NFL+ is not described as a general out-of-market regular-season package. | Whether the matchup is local or nationally televised in your market, the current NFL+ terms, and the supported device. |
| Postseason games on NFL+ | Live postseason access follows the same local-market and national-broadcast limitation stated in the subscription terms. | The broadcaster or service carrying that particular playoff game and whether your location is included. |
| Preseason games | The NFL+ product page includes out-of-market preseason games, while the terms say live preseason games are generally subject to local and other geographic blackouts. | The exact preseason matchup, blackout territory, and the service’s current blackout notice. |
| Local and primetime games on NFL+ | The product page describes live local and primetime games on mobile devices. “Local” means a game available on television in your market. | Your local broadcast listing, the primetime window, and whether your phone or tablet meets the current requirements. |
| Mobile-only games | The terms say live regular-season and postseason games are generally available only on phones and tablets; mobile-only games may not be cast to a television. | Supported operating system, account limits, and whether casting or a television app is permitted for that game. |
These categories explain why a game page can be reachable while the video remains unavailable. Website access is not proof that the underlying broadcast is licensed for your location.

NFL+ requirements and device limits
NFL+ subscription access is restricted to specified United States jurisdictions. The terms page specifies the 50 states and Washington, D.C., subject to applicable law. Availability outside those jurisdictions should not be assumed from the fact that the signup page loads.
The current NFL+ product page presents a mobile-focused service: live local and primetime games, out-of-market preseason games, live game audio, and additional features. The subscription terms add an important practical restriction: live regular-season and postseason games are generally available only on phones and tablets. A mobile-only game may not be cast to a television.
Consequently, a VPN cannot solve a screen or casting restriction. A television, streaming box, or HDMI cable does not turn a mobile-only entitlement into a television entitlement. Check the device list and casting language in the current terms before subscribing, especially if your plan is to watch on a living-room display.

Use the NFL’s location-based schedule before kickoff
The NFL’s Ways to Watch tool creates a personalized schedule based on your location and the television or streaming services you select. Use it to determine the legitimate route for one specific game rather than relying on a generic list of services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the schedule tool. Enter the location where you will actually watch. The result is market-specific, so a schedule built for one city may not apply after you travel.
- Select the team or date. Find the exact matchup and kickoff window. Do not treat every game in a team’s season as having the same distribution rights.
- Review the listed broadcast. Note whether the game is identified as local, national, preseason, or another special distribution. The classification determines which restrictions matter.
- Choose a listed television or streaming service. Confirm that your subscription tier includes the channel or package carrying that game. The NFL schedule identifies viewing routes; the distributor’s own terms control account, location, and device use.
- Check the screen you intend to use. Verify whether the service supports a phone, tablet, web browser, television app, or casting. For NFL+, pay particular attention to the phone-and-tablet limitation.
- Recheck close to game time. Broadcast assignments, device support, and blackout notices can change. The schedule tool is more reliable for a particular market and date than an old article or a VPN server list.
How to compare legitimate viewing options
There is no single NFL viewing route that works for every matchup. Compare options using the four questions below.
| Decision question | Why it matters | Evidence to check |
|---|---|---|
| Is the game local, national, or out of market? | Local and national games follow different distribution rules from out-of-market preseason games. | The personalized NFL schedule and the broadcaster’s listing. |
| Does the service carry this exact broadcast? | A subscription can be valid yet omit the channel or event you need. | The service’s current channel, event, and blackout pages. |
| What market will the service use? | Location-dependent rights can apply even when your account is active and paid. | The service terms and the location entered in the NFL schedule tool. |
| Which screen is supported? | Some live rights are mobile-only, and casting may be restricted. | Supported-device documentation and the game’s viewing notes. |
This approach prevents a common mistake: buying a VPN first and only later discovering that the needed broadcast is not included in any authorized service for the viewing location.

Why a game may appear blacked out
The matchup is not authorized in your local market
For NFL+, live regular-season and postseason games are limited to games available on television in your local market and national broadcasts. If another local broadcaster has the rights, NFL+ is not a general out-of-market replacement. A VPN does not add that game to the NFL+ entitlement.
The game is a preseason broadcast with a geographic blackout
Out-of-market preseason games are a separate NFL+ feature, and the terms warn that live preseason games are generally subject to local and other geographic blackouts. Check the specific preseason listing rather than assuming that “out of market” means available everywhere.

A mobile-only game can remain unavailable on a television even when it plays on an eligible phone or tablet. Casting may be disabled for that event. Confirm the device rules before changing networks or reinstalling the app.

The service has its own location verification
The NFL’s reviewed pages do not publish one universal VPN-detection policy. Individual distributors can apply their own account, network, or device checks under their terms. If you receive a location or playback error, follow that service’s support instructions and test the authorized setup it documents rather than assuming a different VPN server will resolve the issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when playback fails
- Identify the exact error. Distinguish a blackout notice from an authentication failure, unsupported-device message, or general network error. Each points to a different cause.
- Confirm the game and market again. Reopen the NFL schedule tool with the location where you are watching and verify the listed service.
- Check the account and subscription. Make sure you are signed into the account that holds the required package and that the subscription has not expired or been changed.
- Use a supported device. For NFL+, try the eligible phone or tablet specified by the current terms. Do not assume a television app or cast session has the same rights.
- Test the authorized network configuration. If a VPN, proxy, or unusual DNS setup is active, turn it off temporarily and retry through the service’s documented connection. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that the game will be available.
- Contact the distributor when the schedule says you should have access. Provide the matchup, kickoff time, market, device, subscription tier, and exact error message. Support can determine whether the restriction is a rights issue or a technical fault.
Does the NFL ban VPNs?
The official material reviewed does not say that every VPN is prohibited, detected, or blocked. It does establish that availability depends on geographic location, platform, device, and broadcast rights. Therefore, claims that a VPN always works—or that the NFL universally bans every VPN connection—go beyond what the published terms establish.
Read the terms for the particular service you use. A platform may limit access when it cannot verify the required location or may treat location masking as inconsistent with its rules, even if the NFL’s general pages do not describe a universal VPN policy. The safest interpretation is that a VPN is a network-privacy tool, not a license to bypass a blackout or obtain an out-of-market broadcast.

Travel, privacy, and practical expectations
If you are traveling, determine the authorized viewing option for the place where you will watch. The NFL’s schedule tool is designed to personalize results by location, and the service carrying the game may apply its own geographic terms. Changing the apparent IP address can produce a result that does not match your account, payment profile, app permissions, or actual market.
Do not buy hardware as a blackout workaround. Streaming sticks, VPN routers, HDMI accessories, and printed schedules cannot change which broadcaster is authorized to show a game. Hardware is useful only when it supports a service and device combination that already includes the event.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways for choosing a game-day setup
- Start with the exact matchup and the location where you will watch.
- Use the NFL’s personalized Ways to Watch schedule to identify the listed broadcaster or streaming route.
- Treat NFL+ as local-market and national-broadcast access for live regular-season and postseason games, not as a universal out-of-market package.
- Check separate blackout rules for out-of-market preseason games.
- Confirm phone, tablet, television, and casting support before subscribing.
- Do not assume that a VPN changes authorized availability or that every platform handles VPN traffic identically.
