Microsoft is expanding DirectX with two ways for graphics developers to use machine learning: shader-level operations through DirectX Linear Algebra and whole-model processing through the DirectX Compute Graph Compiler. The D3D12 Linear Algebra APIs reached preview on April 27, 2026; Microsoft’s March announcement planned a summer private preview for the compiler, but its status as of October 4, 2026 is not established by the available announcements. These are developer tools—not a switch that automatically improves every game.
What is Microsoft adding to DirectX for AI-powered rendering?
Microsoft announced the two DirectX ML capabilities on March 12, 2026. They address different scales of work: Linear Algebra lets developers write machine-learning operations into HLSL shaders, while the Compute Graph Compiler is designed to process larger models as complete computation graphs.
The split reflects a practical difference in graphics workloads. A shader may need to run a compact operation inline with rendering; a larger model can benefit from optimizing its connected operations and memory use together. Microsoft describes both as ways to bring ML into graphics pipelines, not as consumer-facing graphics features that games receive automatically.
How does DirectX Linear Algebra work?
DirectX Linear Algebra is the shader-level path. It provides a common programming model for vector- and matrix-based ML workloads in HLSL, with developers controlling the math, data flow, and execution. Microsoft says earlier Cooperative Vector support demonstrated inline ML in graphics shaders, but workloads such as denoising and temporal upscaling may require matrix-matrix operations and data shared across threads—not only vector-matrix primitives. Microsoft’s March announcement explains that broader motivation.

On April 27, Microsoft announced a D3D12 Linear Algebra API preview release. The APIs subsume earlier WaveMMA and Cooperative Vectors into a set of orthogonal APIs, with three matrix scopes:
- Thread: Matrix operations for an individual shader thread, with neural lighting among the cited use cases.
- Wave: Operations for matrix hardware, aimed at ML and image-processing work.
- ThreadGroup: A larger scope intended to avoid manual tiling for larger matrices by leaving tiling decisions to the driver.
These scopes describe the API design, not guaranteed performance or a uniform feature set across devices. Microsoft’s D3D12 Linear Algebra preview post provides the API details.

What is the DirectX Compute Graph Compiler?
The Compute Graph Compiler is Microsoft’s model-level path. Its announced design accepts models from modern frameworks, analyzes and specializes a graph for a device, then lowers it into optimized workloads that integrate with D3D12 queues and command lists.
Microsoft says the intended capabilities include graph-wide optimization, memory planning, operator fusion, cross-IHV portability, and unified PIX captures. The aim is to let developers integrate full models into an engine without rewriting them as shaders. These are Microsoft’s described goals and capabilities, not independently measured results. The March 12 announcement planned a summer private preview; the announcements cited here do not confirm whether that preview occurred or whether the compiler is now more widely available.

How do the two DirectX ML approaches differ?
| Aspect | DirectX Linear Algebra | Compute Graph Compiler |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Smaller, inline shader operations | Full computation graphs and larger models |
| Programming surface | HLSL, with developer control over math, data flow, and execution | Model input from modern frameworks, as described by Microsoft |
| Optimization scope | Matrix and vector operations at thread, wave, or thread-group scope | Graph-wide analysis, specialization, memory planning, and operator fusion |
| Availability established by the cited announcements | D3D12 API preview announced April 27, 2026 | March 2026 announcement planned a summer private preview; later status is not established here |
The approaches are complementary rather than competing versions of the same API. A developer can choose based on whether a task belongs inside a shader or is better represented as a larger model graph.
What are Cooperative Vectors, and why do they matter?
In January 2025, Microsoft described Cooperative Vectors as a way to accelerate matrix-vector operations and use neural networks within shader stages, with cross-vendor support as an objective. The 2026 Linear Algebra announcement broadens that direction to a more complete programming model, including matrix-matrix work and operations across larger shader scopes. Microsoft says the April preview APIs subsume the earlier Cooperative Vectors and WaveMMA work.

For developers, the choice is primarily about how to express and integrate an ML workload: inline HLSL operations, a full model graph, or potentially both. For players, the announcements alone do not mean an existing game will gain an AI-rendering feature or run faster.
How does this relate to DirectML?
DirectML is related Windows machine-learning infrastructure, but it is distinct from the two new DirectX announcements. Microsoft Learn currently describes DirectML as being in sustained engineering: it remains supported, while new feature development for Windows-based ONNX Runtime deployments has moved to Windows ML. The documentation says DirectML supports DirectX 12-compatible hardware and can be used for tasks including upscaling, anti-aliasing, and denoising. See Microsoft’s Introduction to DirectML for its current platform guidance.
