A WordPress hosting SLA is a contract, not a promise that every page element will always load. To compare guarantees, calculate the downtime allowed, then read what the provider calls “service,” how availability is measured, which outages are excluded, and what evidence and deadline apply to a credit claim.
What a WordPress hosting SLA actually guarantees
Service-level agreements (SLAs) define a hosting company’s contractual availability target and the remedy if that target is missed. The percentage normally applies to a defined service during a defined measurement period. It may cover a web server, a complete hosting platform, or a narrower component. It rarely guarantees that your theme, plugins, DNS, payment gateway, images, or every third-party script will work continuously.

That distinction matters because “99.9% uptime” has no useful meaning until the contract answers five questions:
- What exactly is the service being measured?
- Over what period is availability calculated?
- What events are excluded from downtime?
- Whose monitoring records are authoritative?
- What credit is available, and how must you claim it?
An SLA credit is usually compensation on a future invoice rather than a cash payment. It may be capped, expire, or apply only to the affected service. A provider can therefore meet the headline percentage while offering little remedy for a serious incident if the exclusions are broad or the claim procedure is easy to miss.

How much downtime does each percentage allow?
Availability is the percentage of the covered period during which the defined service is available. The following figures assume a 30-day month (43,200 minutes) and no exclusions:

Calendar length changes the allowance. A 31-day month has more covered minutes; a 28-day month has fewer. Contracts may use a calendar month, a billing month, or another interval. Kinsta, for example, defines its monthly billing period around a customer’s billing dates rather than automatically using the calendar month.

Do not mix periods when comparing percentages. A published explainer from TechRadar points out that 99.9% averaged over one month can mean roughly 44 minutes of downtime, while 99.99% over a full year can still permit more than 52 minutes. Scheduled and other excluded events can reduce the time that counts toward either figure.
Thresholds are not always the same as the mathematical allowance
Some SLAs round the calculation or use a credit table. Kinsta’s current SLA says credits begin after more than 43 minutes at a 99.9% guarantee and after more than 4 minutes at 99.99%. Those thresholds are close to, but not identical to, the raw 43.2- and 4.32-minute calculations. Read the table in the contract rather than relying on a calculator.
Contract terms to inspect before choosing a plan
1. Scope: define the word “service”
Find the contract’s definition of the covered service. It might mean the hosting platform, an individual website, a virtual machine, a database, or only the network edge. Ask whether it includes the web server, database, storage, CDN, control panel, backups, and the components required to serve a WordPress request. If a database outage makes the site unusable but the web server responds, a narrow SLA may still record the service as available.

Check whether the guarantee applies to every site on an account or is calculated per site, per application, per account, or across the provider’s whole platform. Also confirm plan eligibility: a headline guarantee may apply only to selected regions, products, or custom orders.

Availability can be measured by synthetic HTTP requests, infrastructure health checks, internal telemetry, or a combination. The SLA should identify the test locations, request interval, response criteria, and treatment of partial failures. A provider’s monitoring system is often declared authoritative. That can differ from what visitors experience from another country or from a mobile network.
Ask how failed requests are debounced, whether a single error counts, and whether slow responses count as downtime. If the provider’s records control the claim, retain your own independent evidence so you can challenge a disputed incident.
3. Measurement window
Identify whether the period is a calendar month, billing month, rolling interval, or contract year. Note the time zone used to open and close the period. A site that changes plans mid-month may have separate calculations or no eligible period at all. The contract should also say whether downtime is aggregated across incidents and how partial minutes are rounded.
4. Exclusions and “excused downtime”
Exclusions are often more important than the percentage. Look for:

- Scheduled maintenance, including the required notice and maximum duration.
- Emergency maintenance or security work.
- Your code, configuration, traffic spike, resource exhaustion, or failure to follow usage limits.
- Distributed attacks, abuse, or suspension for a policy violation.
- DNS providers, payment processors, external APIs, plugins, themes, or other third parties.
- Internet, cloud-region, utility, or telecommunications failures outside the provider’s control.
- Force majeure events.
Some agreements exclude an entire incident once it falls into one category. Others exclude only the affected component or maintenance window. Compare the wording and notice requirements, not just the list of headings.
5. Remedy, cap, and expiration
Determine whether the remedy is a service credit, how it is calculated, and whether it applies to the affected month or a future invoice. Check the credit table for each downtime band, the maximum credit in a month or contract term, and any minimum invoice or plan requirement. Find out when credits expire and whether they can be combined with other adjustments. A large percentage target with a very small capped credit may be less valuable than a lower target backed by a meaningful remedy.
6. Claim deadline and process
Most providers do not issue credits automatically. The agreement may require a written support request, incident dates, timestamps, and your monitoring evidence. WP Engine and Kinsta both require requests within 30 days; missing that deadline forfeits the credit under their stated terms. Save the incident ticket, status-page notices, logs, and screenshots until the billing adjustment appears.
7. Architecture and failover
An SLA percentage does not prove that the site is designed for high availability. Ask whether the plan has redundant application instances, replicated storage, automatic failover, database clustering, and cross-zone recovery. Also ask which failures each layer can tolerate. A single container with a high contractual target may still have a larger outage blast radius than a lower target backed by genuine redundancy.

WP Engine’s SLA states that it will make the services available 99.95% of the time, excluding Excused Downtime. Its enhanced target raises that figure to 99.99%, but the credit mechanics differ between the two tiers. Kinsta states that its default guarantee is 99.9% unless a higher figure appears on the order form. Its documentation also says the standard service is not high-availability hosting: each site uses a single Linux container rather than multiple load-balanced instances. Kinsta says custom plans may offer up to 99.99%. A 99.9% claim for Cloudways Autonomous describes a Kubernetes-based autoscaling product; inspect the contract for the exact covered service and remedy.
SLA versus high availability: what the percentage cannot tell you
High availability (HA) is an engineering design; an SLA is a contractual commitment. HA can reduce outage duration through redundancy and automated failover, while an SLA may only promise a credit after the fact. A provider can offer an SLA-backed guarantee without offering HA architecture. Conversely, redundant architecture does not remove the need to read exclusions and measurement rules.
For a revenue-critical store, ask these architecture questions:
- Are application instances spread across failure domains or confined to one host?
- Can a failed instance be replaced automatically without a manual support action?
- Are databases replicated, and what is the recovery-point and recovery-time objective?
- Are backups stored separately and tested for restoration?
- Does failover cover only the web tier, or also storage, database, DNS, and certificates?
Use the answers to estimate the outage modes that matter to your business. A credit cannot recover lost sales, search visibility, or customer trust.
How to verify an outage and file a claim
- Confirm the symptom. Test the site from more than one network and location. Check whether the failure affects all pages, only logged-in users, or one asset such as a script or image.
- Record timestamps. Keep the time zone, URL, HTTP status, response time, and screenshots. Note when the site recovered.
- Check provider notices. Compare the incident with the status page, maintenance calendar, and support messages. Mark any period that the contract may exclude.
- Compare independent monitoring. Use an external monitor with checks from multiple regions. Export the incident history rather than relying on a dashboard that may overwrite old data.
- Map the incident to the SLA definition. Decide whether the covered service was unavailable, whether the event exceeded the threshold, and whether an exclusion applies.
- Submit the request on time. Follow the contract’s written process, include evidence and the affected service, and submit before the stated deadline—30 days for the cited WP Engine and Kinsta terms.
- Verify the credit. Check the next eligible invoice, the amount, and any remaining cap. Escalate with the ticket number if the adjustment is missing.
Is paying for 99.99% worth it?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the minutes and failure modes your site can tolerate. Moving from 99.9% to 99.99% cuts the nominal 30-day allowance from 43.2 minutes to 4.32 minutes. That improvement matters for a site where a few minutes of outage has a measurable cost, provided the higher target covers the components that fail and the exclusions are comparable.

Paying for the higher figure is less compelling when:
- The upgrade covers only a web server while your database, DNS, CDN, or third-party checkout remains outside scope.
- Scheduled and emergency maintenance remove much of the practical coverage.
- The provider uses the same single-instance architecture at both tiers.
- The credit is capped at an amount far below the business impact of an outage.
- You have no independent monitoring or recovery plan.
For a low-risk brochure site, 99.9% may be adequate when backups, caching, and a rapid restoration procedure are in place. For commerce, memberships, bookings, or regulated workloads, evaluate the total design: redundancy, backup recovery, support escalation, monitoring, and an SLA whose definition matches the customer journey.
A practical comparison checklist
Put each candidate plan in a worksheet and fill in the same fields. Do not rank providers by percentage alone.

If a cell is not stated, treat it as an unresolved contract question rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation. Request a written answer or choose a plan whose terms are explicit.
The Bottom Line
The best WordPress hosting SLA is not the one with the largest percentage. It is the contract whose measured service, exclusions, monitoring, remedy, claim deadline, and underlying architecture match the outages your site cannot afford.
