Wii Virtual Console was a digital storefront for buying individual classic games; Nintendo Switch Online is a membership that lets subscribers access rotating or curated classic-game libraries while their subscription is active. The Wii Shop Channel stopped accepting new purchases on January 30, 2019, and Wii or Wii U purchases do not become Switch entitlements. If you are deciding how to play older Nintendo games today, the key question is whether you want to preserve a historical purchase model or use Nintendo’s current subscription libraries.
Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo Switch Online at a glance
| Comparison | Wii Virtual Console | Nintendo Switch Online classic libraries |
|---|---|---|
| Access model | Buy selected games individually through the Wii Shop Channel with Wii Points, then download them to the Wii. | Download classic-game applications and play their included catalogs while an eligible Nintendo Switch Online membership is active. |
| Current status | New Wii Shop purchases ended January 30, 2019. The cited Nintendo closure notice does not establish the present status of every redownload or transfer service. | Available to eligible active members. Nintendo says the classic games are not planned for individual sale outside the service. |
| Base membership systems | Historical Virtual Console releases included systems such as NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64, subject to availability. | NES, Super NES and Game Boy. |
| Expansion Pack systems | Not applicable. | Nintendo 64, its Mature 17+ collection, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy. Nintendo GameCube classics are included for Switch 2. |
| Ownership | An individual Wii Shop purchase was separate from any subscription service. | Access is a membership benefit, not permanent ownership of each included game. |
| Offline use | The cited Wii sources do not establish a current, like-for-like offline policy. | Offline play is supported, but Nintendo says the console must verify membership online every seven days. |
| Transfer to Switch | Wii and Wii U purchases do not carry over to Switch. | Not a transfer destination for old Wii purchases. |
That difference—individual purchase versus subscription access—explains most of the practical distinctions that follow.
What Wii Virtual Console actually was
A Wii Shop Channel storefront
Virtual Console was a section of the Wii Shop Channel where Wii owners could obtain selected games originally released on older hardware. Nintendo’s Wii documentation describes downloads from systems including NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16, with the exact catalog dependent on availability and region. The games were delivered as individual downloads rather than as one all-you-can-play package.
Payment used Wii Points. A player purchased or redeemed points, selected a specific Virtual Console title, and downloaded it to the Wii’s storage. In practical terms, this resembled buying a digital game from a console storefront: the transaction was tied to the Wii Shop account and the supported Wii ecosystem, not to a future Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The dates that ended new Wii purchases
Nintendo says the Wii Shop Channel had been available since December 2006 and closed to new software purchases on January 30, 2019. The final day to add Wii Points or redeem Wii Points Cards was March 26, 2018. Those dates matter because a Wii owner cannot now recreate the original purchase process by adding points and selecting a Virtual Console game.
Nintendo’s discontinuation notice also said previously purchased Wii Shop content could be redownloaded and transferred to Wii U for the time being, while warning that those services would eventually end and that further details would be announced. The cited notice does not settle whether redownloads or transfers remain available at the time you read this, so do not assume that every old download function still works without checking Nintendo’s current support information for your region.
How Nintendo Switch Online classic games work
Membership tiers determine the systems
Nintendo Switch Online’s classic games are applications included with a membership. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier includes NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, the Nintendo 64 Mature 17+ collection, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy libraries. Nintendo also lists Nintendo GameCube classics for Switch 2; those GameCube applications are not a feature of the original Switch hardware.

You download apps, not permanent game licenses
After joining the appropriate membership, you download the relevant Nintendo Classics application from the eShop. The application contains the games Nintendo has made available for that system. The service does not turn each title into an individually purchased license. Nintendo’s FAQ says classic games are not currently planned for individual sale outside the service.
When the membership expires, access to those classic-game applications is blocked. Nintendo says save data remains on the console, so renewing later can restore access to the saved progress. The saved data is not the same thing as ownership: without an active, qualifying membership, you cannot launch the subscription library.
Offline play has a verification condition
Switch Online classic games can be played without a continuous internet connection after they have been downloaded. Nintendo nevertheless requires the console to verify the membership online every seven days. If the console has not connected for longer than that period, the service may prevent access until it can confirm that the membership is still active. This is an important distinction from a conventional one-time digital purchase.

Do Wii Virtual Console purchases transfer to Nintendo Switch?
No. Nintendo separately states that Wii and Wii U eShop purchases do not carry over to Switch. A Wii Virtual Console purchase therefore does not unlock the corresponding game in a Switch Online application, and it does not create a free Switch eShop download.
Nintendo has documented transfers from Wii to Wii U, including some Virtual Console titles and save data, with exclusions. That is a device-to-device migration within the older Wii/Wii U environment, not a path to Switch. The distinction is easy to miss because both processes use the word “transfer,” but they involve different account and hardware generations.
If you still own a Wii or Wii U, keep its purchase records and follow Nintendo’s current support guidance before changing, resetting or disposing of the console. Do not erase a system expecting a later Switch transfer to preserve those games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat happens when a Switch Online membership ends?
- Access to the classic libraries stops. The downloaded applications remain associated with the console, but Nintendo requires an active qualifying membership to launch the included games.
- Save data stays on the console. Nintendo says your progress is retained for a future renewal rather than deleted automatically when the membership lapses.
- Renewal restores service access. Renewing the appropriate tier allows the supported applications and their saves to be used again, subject to any changes Nintendo has made to the service.
- Offline access is not a loophole. The seven-day online verification requirement means a console cannot remain indefinitely offline while retaining subscription access.
This arrangement is different from Wii Virtual Console, where the original model was a transaction for a particular download rather than continued access tied to a recurring membership.

Which option fits your situation?
You already bought Wii Virtual Console games
Keep using the original Wii ecosystem if the console, storage and redownload functions you need are working. Your past purchases do not reduce the cost of a Switch Online membership and do not transfer to Switch. If a title is important, maintain an appropriate backup strategy within Nintendo’s permitted system features and avoid assuming that Nintendo will preserve legacy redownloads indefinitely.
You want the simplest way to play a selection of classics on a modern console
Switch Online is the current Nintendo-supported route. Choose the base tier for NES, Super NES and Game Boy access, or Expansion Pack when you specifically need Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy or the supported Switch 2 GameCube library. Check the title list before subscribing if you are seeking one particular game; a system library does not guarantee that every release from that platform is included.
You play mostly offline or travel without reliable internet
Switch Online can work for travel, but plan around the seven-day verification requirement. Connect the console at least once during each seven-day window so Nintendo can confirm the membership. If you need a game that remains usable without periodic verification, a separately sold release or a physical collection—when one exists—may follow a different access model.
You want to play with friends
Use the Switch Online versions where Nintendo lists online multiplayer or other network features for the specific game. The service can add online play to supported classics, but features are title-specific. On Switch 2, Nintendo also describes communication support through GameChat for compatible experiences. The Wii sources used for this comparison do not provide an equivalent, system-wide Virtual Console online-feature list.

How to start using Switch Online classics
- Confirm the console and region. Check whether you are using an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch 2, and verify that the desired library is offered in your country. Virtual Boy, for example, has the United States-and-Canada and Switch Lite limitations described by Nintendo.
- Select the membership tier. The standard Nintendo Switch Online plan covers NES, Super NES and Game Boy. Expansion Pack is required for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and the supported Switch 2 GameCube catalog.
- Open the Nintendo eShop with the intended Nintendo Account. Membership and downloaded classic applications must be associated with the account that has the eligible access.
- Download the relevant Nintendo Classics application. Each system’s catalog is delivered through software rather than through a single Wii-style storefront of individual purchases.
- Launch a game and configure controls. Save states, rewind, display options and multiplayer features can differ by application and title. Read the controls shown in the application before assuming that a particular feature is available.
- Plan for verification. Connect the console online at least once every seven days so the membership check can complete, especially before a trip.
Controllers and accessories
Nintendo says members in the United States and Canada may receive special offers, including the option to purchase specially designed classic game controllers. These controllers are optional accessories, not an automatic part of the membership, and Nintendo’s cited information does not establish a particular model or current stock. Check compatibility and availability before buying. Standard Joy-Con or Pro Controller input may work, but the feel and button layout can differ from the original hardware.
Is Nintendo Switch Online the return of Virtual Console?
Nintendo’s current classic-libraries FAQ says: “There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.” That wording means Nintendo does not currently describe Switch Online as Virtual Console returning under a new name.
Nintendo points instead to Nintendo Classics, eShop releases and packaged collections as separate ways older games can appear on newer systems. A particular game may therefore be available through a subscription library, an individual eShop release, a physical collection or none of those options. The branding and business model should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both services offer older games.
Common misconceptions
- “I bought it on Wii, so I own it on Switch.” Wii and Wii U purchases do not carry over to Switch.
- “Downloading a classic application means I own every game in it.” The application is a membership benefit; access ends when the qualifying subscription ends.
- “Offline means no internet is ever needed.” Nintendo requires online membership verification every seven days.
- “Expansion Pack is just a larger NES/SNES plan.” It is the tier that adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy and supported Switch 2 GameCube content.
- “Every Switch model supports every classic system.” Nintendo’s Virtual Boy information excludes Switch Lite, and GameCube classics are listed for Switch 2.
- “Wii-to-Wii U transfer proves Wii-to-Switch transfer exists.” Nintendo’s documented Wii-to-Wii U process is separate from its statement that Wii and Wii U purchases do not carry over to Switch.
The practical verdict
Wii Virtual Console was a now-closed shop for purchasing selected classic games one at a time with Wii Points. Nintendo Switch Online is an active-membership service that delivers curated classic libraries through downloadable applications. The modern service is easier for playing a supported selection on current hardware, but it does not preserve or convert your old Wii purchases into Switch licenses, and it can require periodic online verification even for offline play.
