Are you trying to call a certain number but notice it isn’t going through? This article provides some causes of the problem and tips to navigate the situation.
Reason Your Call Refuses to go Through to a Specific Number
There is a plethora of reasons your calls may not be through to a particular number. However, this section is going to discuss five of the most common causes of the problem.
1. Network Congestion
Network congestion occurs when too many users are attempting to use the same network simultaneously. This is similar to a traffic jam, where a large number of vehicles trying to pass through a limited number of lanes causes delays and blockages.
Telecommunication networks face a similar challenge. In densely populated areas or during peak usage times, the network’s capacity can be overwhelmed.

When this happens, calls may not go through as the system prioritizes and manages the heavy load of simultaneous voice and data transmissions.
2. Number Blocking
Call blocking is another significant reason why a call might not go through to a particular number. There are various levels at which a number can be blocked.
On a personal level, the recipient of the call might have manually blocked your number. On a network level, the service provider might have blocked the recipient’s numbers due to various reasons.

3. Out of Service Area
A number being in an out of service area is a common occurrence, especially in regions with spotty coverage or in rural and remote areas. Telecommunication networks rely on a series of towers and antennas to provide coverage.
Furthermore, these infrastructures are strategically placed to offer maximum reach. However, geographical barriers, such as mountains and valleys, and physical obstructions, like buildings and trees, can weaken signal strength.
When a mobile phone is outside the effective range of a cell tower, the signal may not be strong enough to maintain a call. As a result, attempts to contact someone in such an area might fail repeatedly.

4. Do Not Disturb Mode or Airplane Mode
Another possible reason could be that the recipient has enabled the “Do Not Disturb” (DND) mode on their phone. This feature is designed to help users avoid interruptions by silencing calls, messages, and notifications.

While the mode is active, incoming calls are automatically sent to voicemail, or the caller hears a busy tone, depending on the settings. Apart from enabling the “Do Not Disturb” mode, the recipient might have enabled the Airplane mode.
When Airplane mode is enabled, it temporarily disables a device’s ability to send and receive wireless signals. This includes cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
Hence, it can prevent the recipient’s phone from receiving calls.

One additional reason why your call might not be going through to a certain number is that the recipient’s phone is dead. When a phone is dead, it loses the ability to connect to any network.
This results in the call being unable to locate the intended recipient’s device. In some cases, you, the caller would get a message saying, “the number you’re trying to call is switched off”.
However, sometimes, you may not get any message – the call will just constantly keep failing.

2. Check Signal Strength
Your phone relies on a strong connection to your carrier’s network to initiate and maintain a call. When you’re in an area with weak or no signal, calls may drop or not connect at all.
Signal strength can be affected by various factors, such as distance from the nearest cell tower, physical obstructions, and even weather conditions. To improve your signal, try moving to a different location.
For example, if you’re inside a building, go outside or to a higher floor. If you’re in a rural area, try to find an open space with a clear line of sight to the sky.
3. Test with Another Phone
Testing the number with another phone can help you determine whether the issue lies with your device or the recipient’s number. Borrow a friend’s phone or use a secondary number, if available, to try calling the same number.
If the call goes through with another phone, the issue is likely with your device or SIM. In this case, consider resetting your phone’s network settings or contacting your carrier for further assistance.
Also, it could be you’ve been blocked from calling the number. Nonetheless, if the call still doesn’t go through, the problem might be with the recipient’s phone or network.

They can affect specific regions or services, such as voice calls, text messages, or data connections. To check for network outages, visit your carrier’s website or social media pages, where they often post updates about service disruptions.
There are also third-party websites and apps that track user-reported issues with various carriers. If you discover there’s an outage, you may need to wait until the service is restored.
5. Consider Alternative Communication Methods
If calls consistently fail, consider using alternative communication methods. Text messaging, emails, and messaging apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, or Skype rely on data connections and might work even if regular calls don’t.
