If Trilium finds a note title but not words in the note body, first open Full search and disable Fast search. Fast search intentionally skips note content. Then remove scope and attribute filters, try a plain literal term, check exact-match syntax, and confirm that the note’s type and archived or protected state are searchable in your installed release.

Why Trilium search can miss text that is visibly in a note

Trilium Notes has more than one search path, and they do not apply the same scope. A note can contain the requested word while the selected tool is searching only titles, or while a filter silently excludes the note. Query syntax can also change an ordinary-looking term into an attribute or property expression.

The most common explanation for “Trilium only finds titles” is Fast search. It is optimized for speed and searches titles, attributes, and relations, but deliberately does not search note content. A body-text query therefore appears to return nothing even though the word is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other causes are a restricted ancestor or subtree, a depth limit, label or relation clauses, a result limit, exact matching requested with a leading =, or a note state that the installed version does not include. Older Trilium documentation also listed restrictions involving protected, archived, and certain note types. Current releases expose an Include archived option, so behavior is release-dependent rather than universal.

Use the search tool that matches your goal

Search path Best use Important behavior
Quick search Fast everyday lookups Supports searching, but the available controls and presentation are more limited than Full search.
Full search Searching note bodies and diagnosing misses Provides content searching, scope controls, matching options, archived-note inclusion, ordering, result limits, and snippets showing matched text.
Jump to note Jumping directly to a note by name Primarily title-oriented. If title results are insufficient, use its full-text search action instead of assuming the initial list searched body content.

For a phrase that you know appears inside a note, start with Full search. If you normally use Jump to note, invoke its full-text action when the title-oriented results do not contain the note you expect.

Diagnostic sequence: find the exclusion in the shortest order

Work through these checks in order. After each change, rerun the same distinctive body word so you know which setting changed the result.

  1. Confirm the tool. Use Quick search or, preferably for troubleshooting, Full search. If you began in Jump to note, choose its full-text search action.
  2. Disable Fast search. In Full search, turn off Fast search and run the query again. This is the direct test for a title-only result because Fast search omits note content by design.
  3. Clear the scope. Remove the Ancestor value or subtree restriction. Reduce or remove depth restrictions while diagnosing. A note outside the selected branch cannot appear, regardless of its text.
  4. Remove narrowing clauses. Temporarily delete label and relation conditions and use a generous result limit. Add those conditions back one at a time after the note is found.
  5. Use a plain literal term. Enter one distinctive word copied from the note body. Avoid #, ~, and note. for this test because those characters can introduce query-language syntax.
  6. Check matching mode. If the query begins with =, remove it and search again. Test a quoted phrase only when the words must occur consecutively, and check spelling before moving to fuzzy matching.
  7. Check note state and type. If the note is archived, enable Include archived in the current search interface. Consider whether it is protected or an unusual note type, and verify the rules for your installed release.
  8. Inspect diagnostics. Use autocomplete with Ctrl+Space, syntax highlighting, error highlighting or linting, and the Debug option. Debug output prints parsing details in the server log.
  9. Consider a release-specific parser problem. Only investigate the TriliumNext 0.105.0 issue described below when your query uses property syntax and the symptoms fit. It is not a general explanation for missing body text.

Fast search: the first setting to change

Fast search is easy to mistake for a broken index because it can return a matching title while ignoring an identical word in the body. Its purpose is speed: it searches titles, attributes, and relations, not note content. That behavior is intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Fast search for a quick title or metadata lookup. Switch it off when you need words, sentences, or code inside the note. Once body results appear with Fast search disabled, there is no indexing failure to repair; the setting was selecting a different search surface.

Filters that hide an otherwise matching note

Ancestor and subtree scope

An Ancestor field or subtree restriction limits the search to a branch of the note tree. A body match outside that branch is excluded. Clear the ancestor value before diagnosing a missing result, then restore it after you know the query works.

Depth restrictions

Depth controls can exclude descendants even when the selected ancestor is correct. Remove the depth restriction temporarily. If the note reappears, choose a depth that reaches its actual position in the tree.

Labels and relations

Label and relation clauses are additional predicates, not merely display preferences. A note can contain the requested text and still fail because it lacks a required label or relation. Delete those clauses for the first test, then add them back separately to identify which one excludes the note.

Result limits and ordering

A restrictive result limit can make a valid match look absent when other notes rank ahead of it. Increase the limit while diagnosing and inspect the ordering. Full search can order results and display snippets with the matched text, which makes it easier to distinguish a true miss from a result that is simply outside the first page.

How Trilium parses a query

Trilium search expressions are not always plain text. Characters and prefixes can have structural meaning, so a query that looks literal may be interpreted as a condition on an attribute or note property.

Special characters and property syntax

A #, ~, or note. prefix can introduce attribute or property syntax. If the characters are part of the text you want to find, quote the literal or escape the special character with a backslash. During diagnosis, the safest first query is a distinctive body word that contains none of those operators.

Autocomplete, syntax highlighting, and error highlighting help reveal when Trilium has parsed a term as an expression. If the editor marks part of the query as invalid, fix that expression before judging the search index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Default, exact, and fuzzy matching

Trilium documents three relevant matching behaviors:

  • Default matching can find substrings and can fall back to fuzzy behavior when appropriate.
  • Exact full-text matching is requested with a leading =. It matches a whole word or phrase and therefore does not match a substring.
  • Attribute or property equality compares a value inside a property clause. The equals sign in that clause is not the same as the leading exact-match operator.

For example, if the note contains “configuration” and you search for an exact term that requires a whole-word match, a shorter substring may not qualify. Remove the leading = to test ordinary matching. Put quotation marks around words only when they must occur as a consecutive phrase.

The FAQ for the current search documentation says fuzzy matching is added when exact matching returns fewer than five results. That fallback explains why a misspelled query may produce a few approximate results in one situation but none in another. When spelling is uncertain, use the documented fuzzy operators in Full search rather than adding random punctuation or assuming every mode is fuzzy.

Archived, protected, and special note types

Note eligibility has changed across Trilium versions. Current search documentation includes an Include archived option, so an archived note may be searchable when that option is enabled. If the option is off, an archived note can be absent even though its content is intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The older Trilium wiki recorded a narrower full-text scope: undeleted, unprotected text and code notes that were not archived. That page is historical, and the documentation has moved to the current Trilium documentation site. Treat those restrictions as a reason to check your release and note type, not as a guaranteed rule for every modern installation.

Protection status and note type are therefore late-stage checks, after Fast search and filters. If a plain body query works in an ordinary unarchived note but fails only for a protected, archived, or specialized note, compare the note state and the behavior documented for your installed version.

What to do when the query still behaves strangely

Read the editor’s feedback

Press Ctrl+Space for autocomplete. Syntax highlighting shows which portions Trilium treats as operators, attributes, or properties. Error highlighting and linting can identify malformed expressions before the search runs. These cues are especially useful after pasting a complex query.

Use Debug output

Full search provides a Debug option that prints parsing details in the server log. Enable it for a query that returns an implausible set of notes, then inspect how the expression was interpreted. Debugging is more informative when you remove filters first and add them back one by one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the TriliumNext 0.105.0 property-parser issue

Issue #11116 reports an unrecognized-property failure in TriliumNext 0.105.0. In the reported case, a query using an unsupported note property caused an error that the plain search route discarded; the resulting output could be overly broad because a filter was lost.

This is a bounded parser edge case, not evidence that ordinary content search is broadly broken. Consider it only when all of the following are true:

  • You are running the affected 0.105.0 release or are checking behavior against it.
  • The query uses property syntax rather than a simple body word.
  • The result is abnormally broad or a property is reported as unrecognized.

Reproduce the behavior with a plain literal query, inspect Debug output, and check release notes for your exact version before attributing a missing or extra result to this issue.

Search paths compared by the decisions that matter

Decision What to verify
What is searched? Body content requires a content-capable search with Fast search disabled; titles, attributes, and relations can be returned by Fast search.
What is the scope? Whole database versus an Ancestor or subtree, including any depth restriction.
What matching mode is active? Default substring or fuzzy behavior, exact whole-word or phrase matching from a leading =, or equality inside an attribute/property clause.
Which notes are eligible? Check note type, protection, deletion state, and archive inclusion for the installed release.
How are results shown? Full search can order results, limit them, and show snippets containing matched text; a low limit or unexpected order can conceal a valid match.

Practical examples

“The word is in the body, but only the title result appears”

Open Full search, disable Fast search, clear Ancestor and depth controls, remove labels and relations, and search one distinctive body word without operators. If the note appears, restore the desired scope and filters individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“An archived note is missing”

Enable Include archived, then rerun the plain query. If the note remains absent, check whether its protection or note type is covered by the rules of your installed release; older documentation did not include every archived or protected note in full-text results.

“A query with a hashtag returns the wrong notes”

Trilium may parse # as attribute syntax. Quote or backslash-escape it when you mean the literal character. Then compare the result with a plain word query to separate parser behavior from note eligibility.

“Adding an equals sign makes the result disappear”

A leading = requests exact whole-word or phrase matching, so it will not find a substring. Remove the prefix for default matching, use quotation marks only for a consecutive phrase, and check spelling before trying documented fuzzy operators.

A compact checklist for future misses

  • Use Quick search or Full search for text in note bodies.
  • Use Full search when you need snippets, ordering, limits, archived inclusion, or diagnostics.
  • Turn off Fast search for body-text searches.
  • Clear Ancestor, subtree, depth, label, relation, and overly restrictive result-limit settings while testing.
  • Start with one distinctive literal word.
  • Quote or escape #, ~, and note. when they are literal text.
  • Remove a leading = unless you need an exact whole-word or phrase match.
  • Check spelling and use documented fuzzy operators when uncertainty remains.
  • Enable Include archived for archived-note searches.
  • Verify protection and note-type eligibility against your installed release.
  • Use autocomplete, linting, and Debug output for complex expressions.
  • Investigate the 0.105.0 unsupported-property issue only when its version and symptoms match.

The Bottom Line

In most cases, Trilium is not missing the text: Fast search, a hidden scope, query syntax, matching mode, or note eligibility is excluding it. Full search with Fast search disabled and all temporary filters cleared gives you the cleanest test.
