Google needs Hollywood more than the studios need AI. Google can supply frontier models, cloud computing, video tools and global distribution, but those capabilities are widely contestable. Hollywood controls the scarce assets that make entertainment AI commercially meaningful: copyrighted stories, recognizable characters, performer likenesses, production archives and audience trust.

That imbalance does not mean studios will reject artificial intelligence. It means they can adopt it selectively, negotiate permission and provenance requirements, and change vendors when economics or safeguards disappoint. The likely outcome is bounded, licensed use—not a handover of Hollywood’s rights to one technology company.

The strategic imbalance in one sentence

Google’s AI systems become more useful when they can lawfully work with culturally important material. A generic video model can generate moving images, but a studio can authorize a specific character, actor likeness, scene library or visual world that audiences already recognize. Those assets are scarce, protected and difficult to recreate through scale alone.

Studios, by contrast, can use AI capabilities from several suppliers—or not use a particular capability at all. They already possess the underlying intellectual property, established production relationships and distribution channels. AI can reduce time or cost in selected tasks, but it is not the source of the franchise value that makes a film commercially viable.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is a bargaining advantage, not a guarantee that studios will always win. A company with enormous compute, a popular consumer platform and strong developer relationships can still influence terms. The practical question is who controls the inputs, approvals and routes to audiences when a project uses generative tools.

What Google brings and what Hollywood controls

Comparison point Google Film and television studios
Ownership and control of intellectual property Owns models, software, cloud infrastructure and some platform technologies; does not automatically own every story, character or performance that a model can reference. Controls valuable catalogs, characters, footage, scripts, trademarks and contractual rights, subject to underlying creator and performer agreements.
Access to training or reference material Can process data that is lawfully available or licensed, and offers publisher controls such as Google-Extended and robots.txt opt-outs. Permission for specific entertainment assets still has to be negotiated. Has authenticated production assets and can decide which files, likenesses or characters may be used, for what purpose and for how long.
Distribution reach Operates global search, video and cloud services. YouTube gives Google a direct path to audiences and a role in labeling synthetic media. Owns or licenses release windows, marketing relationships, theatrical and streaming arrangements, and established fan communities.
Production speed and cost Models such as Veo, Gemini and Imagen can accelerate ideation, image work, background extension and other tasks when integrated into a controlled workflow. Supplies the creative brief, production expertise, editorial judgment, physical assets and final approval. Savings depend on the task and do not eliminate supervision.
Creator consent and likeness protection Must provide controls and contracts that address personal likenesses, copyrighted characters and provenance, especially when outputs are realistic. Negotiates with actors, writers, directors and rights holders, and can withhold consent or impose limits on a use.
Litigation and regulatory risk Faces exposure if models or services reproduce protected expression, mislead audiences or distribute unauthorized synthetic media at scale. Faces claims from creators, performers and consumers, but can also enforce its own rights and set contractual conditions.

The table explains the core thesis: Google’s capabilities are powerful but substitutable; a studio’s best-known intellectual property is both differentiated and legally constrained.

Google is already testing practical filmmaking uses

Short films with Primordial Soup

Google DeepMind announced a partnership with Darren Aronofsky’s Primordial Soup to produce three short films using Veo and related models. The first, ANCESTRA, was slated for the Tribeca Festival in June 2025. The project matters less as proof that an entire movie can be automated than as a demonstration of a negotiated, filmmaker-led workflow. A named production partner supplies creative direction and a context in which model outputs can be evaluated by professionals.

Such pilots also let Google learn what filmmakers actually need: repeatable character continuity, controllable camera movement, edit-friendly shots, rights records and predictable output behavior. A showcase short can reveal those requirements more clearly than a consumer prompt demo.

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere

For The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, Google Cloud and Google DeepMind described using fine-tuned Gemini models, Veo 2 and Imagen 3 to enhance resolution, extend backgrounds and digitally recreate characters. These are bounded production and exhibition tasks. They use technology to adapt an existing property for an immersive venue rather than claiming that a model independently created the franchise.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the partnership as “a great example of pushing the boundaries of generative AI to deliver exciting new experiences for audiences – and new opportunities for studios and filmmakers.” The wording is significant: the opportunity is framed as collaboration around an existing property, not transfer of ownership to the model provider.

Why rights and provenance are the scarce inputs

A model can generate a plausible red-haired heroine, a yellow-brick road or a superhero-like costume. It cannot, without authorization, turn those approximations into an official character, a performer’s approved digital double or a studio’s sequel. Official status depends on contracts, chain of title, trademark and copyright analysis, and a process for recording what source material was used.

The U.S. Copyright Office published Part 1 of its artificial-intelligence report on digital replicas on July 31, 2024. That report addressed the legal risks of realistic simulations of a person’s voice or appearance. Part 2, published January 29, 2025, examined copyrightability of generative-AI outputs. Together, the dates show that the legal framework is developing while commercial tools are already being deployed.

For a studio, provenance is operational as well as legal. Teams need to know whether an image came from an approved asset library, whether a performer consented to a particular use, whether a prompt embedded confidential script material and whether an output can be cleared for theatrical, streaming and international release. A fast output that cannot be documented may be unusable.

Studios can adopt AI without surrendering control

The most defensible pattern is task-level adoption. A studio can approve one model for concept art, another for localization and a third for restoration, while keeping the master assets and final editorial decisions in its own systems. Vendor switching is practical when files, metadata and rights records remain portable.

Workflow Potential use Control a studio should retain
Preproduction Concept frames, set extensions, storyboards and rapid visual exploration. Approved source libraries, confidentiality rules and human sign-off before material enters a budget or pitch.
Production support Reference images, previs, continuity checks and controlled digital doubles. Performer consent, shot-level approvals and a record of where a likeness appears.
Postproduction Resolution enhancement, background extension, cleanup and versioning. Original camera files, edit decisions, quality standards and a reversible workflow.
Localization Subtitles, dubbing assistance and marketing adaptations. Translation review, voice permissions and territory-by-territory release approval.
Marketing Variant trailers, artwork and audience testing. Brand guidelines, spoiler controls, talent approvals and disclosure when synthetic footage could mislead.
Immersive exhibition Large-format restoration, environment expansion and interactive character moments. Licenses defining venue, duration, geography, interactivity and preservation of the original work.

This approach treats AI as production infrastructure. It can improve throughput without making a studio dependent on one provider for the rights-bearing parts of a franchise.

Distribution gives Google leverage—and creates accountability

Google’s advantage is not limited to model quality. YouTube gives it a direct relationship with creators and audiences, while cloud services can sit beneath studios’ own applications. That reach can make a licensed character or officially approved clip discoverable at global scale.

The same reach increases exposure when synthetic media is unauthorized or deceptive. YouTube announced disclosure requirements for realistic altered or synthetic media, with more prominent labels for sensitive topics. Labels do not resolve copyright or consent disputes, but they establish a platform-level governance mechanism. Google therefore has to manage two connected risks: whether content may be made and whether viewers can understand what they are seeing.

For studios, distribution terms should specify labeling, takedown procedures, audit access and the treatment of derivative outputs. A model license that says nothing about the platform where the output will appear leaves a major part of the risk unresolved.

Why studios can sue one AI company and partner with another

Litigation and commercial partnerships are not contradictory. They are tools for dealing with different counterparties and different conduct.

In June 2025, Disney and Universal sued Midjourney over alleged unauthorized generation of copyrighted characters. Their complaint, as reported by the Associated Press, called Midjourney “the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism.” The Motion Picture Association said that “strong copyright protection is the backbone of our industry” while supporting a “balanced approach to AI that both protects intellectual property and embraces responsible, human-centered innovation.” The lawsuit had not been finally decided in the information available for this article, so its allegations should not be treated as a court ruling.

Associated Press reporting in December 2025 described a different arrangement: Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI and a character deal while also sending Google a cease-and-desist alleging large-scale infringement by Google’s AI services. The episode illustrates a studio’s leverage. It can invest in, license to or test one AI company while demanding changes from another. A partnership does not create a blanket waiver for every other service.

Will Google license movie characters for Veo?

Specific licenses are plausible; a universal license to every major studio is not established. A workable agreement would define the characters or footage covered, the model and product versions, training versus user-prompted generation, approved territories, duration, revenue sharing, safety restrictions, attribution, takedown rights and what happens to outputs after termination.

Google’s public AI-and-intellectual-property policy says it is exploring partnership and value-exchange models. It also describes controls including Google-Extended and robots.txt opt-outs. Those controls matter to publishers and rights holders, but an opt-out is not the same as a negotiated license for a named franchise. Studios seeking official character use would still need a contract that addresses consent, scope and compensation.

The most likely equilibrium is therefore modular. A studio may license a small set of characters for a defined campaign, authorize a restoration project for a particular venue or permit model-assisted localization while prohibiting training on unreleased scripts. Each permission can be withdrawn or renegotiated if the provider changes its safeguards or economics.

Are actors and writers going to be replaced?

The evidence supports a more limited conclusion: AI is being positioned to assist parts of filmmaking, not to replace the entire human production chain. The documented examples involve short-film experimentation, resolution enhancement, background extension and digital recreation within named projects. They do not establish that conventional production has been replaced.

Actors and writers face distinct issues. A performer’s likeness, voice and movement may require express consent and compensation, especially for a digital replica. A writer’s scripts and characters may be protected expression, confidential material or part of a collective bargaining arrangement. A studio that uses a model for brainstorming still has to decide who receives credit, who approves the result and whether the final work contains protectable human authorship.

The Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 report on copyrightability is relevant because protection for an output depends on the human contribution and the applicable law, not simply on the fact that a company paid for a model. Purely machine-generated material may not receive the same protection as a work shaped by human authorship. Studios therefore have an incentive to document creative decisions rather than treating prompts as a substitute for a production record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who owns an AI-generated movie character?

There is no single answer that can be inferred from the model used. Ownership may be divided among copyright in the underlying character, trademark rights in a name or logo, contractual rights held by a studio, a performer’s rights of publicity and whatever human-authored elements appear in the new work.

Before approving a generated character, a production should identify the source material, confirm whether any person’s likeness is present, record the human creative decisions and specify ownership in contracts with the model provider and artists. If those steps are skipped, a visually impressive output can create uncertainty over sequel rights, merchandising, advertising and international exploitation.

What a responsible Google–Hollywood deal would include

  1. Defined assets: list the characters, footage, voices, scripts or environments covered, rather than granting an unlimited category of “studio content.”
  2. Purpose limits: distinguish training, internal development, marketing, exhibition and public generation.
  3. Consent and likeness rules: identify whose approval is required for an actor, writer, director or other creator.
  4. Provenance records: preserve source files, prompts or other metadata needed to show how an output was made.
  5. Audience disclosure: specify when realistic synthetic media receives a label and how corrections are handled.
  6. Security and deletion: protect unreleased material and explain what happens to copies, embeddings and outputs when a deal ends.
  7. Audit and remedies: provide inspection rights, takedown procedures, indemnities and a clear path to suspend use after a breach.
  8. Portability: let the studio export approved assets and records so it can move to another provider.

These provisions convert a broad promise of “AI innovation” into enforceable boundaries. They also preserve the studio’s ability to compare vendors instead of becoming locked into one ecosystem.

What to watch next

  • Whether pilot projects become repeatable production services with published rights and consent terms.
  • How courts interpret claims involving training data, character outputs and digital replicas; the reported Midjourney case was not a final judgment.
  • Whether YouTube’s disclosure rules expand beyond sensitive topics or gain stronger enforcement mechanisms.
  • Whether Google’s partnership and value-exchange proposals produce licenses for specific catalogs rather than informal access.
  • How collective agreements and individual contracts define compensation, approval and reuse for synthetic performances.

The practical verdict

Google can make filmmaking faster, more flexible and more immersive, but its models do not create the cultural legitimacy of a known franchise. Hollywood owns the rights, relationships and trust that audiences recognize. Because studios can select tools, limit permissions and negotiate with multiple vendors, they do not need to give any one AI company permanent control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s strongest position will come from earning permission, proving provenance and fitting into workflows that leave creators and rights holders in control. Studios that document consent, retain portable assets and license narrowly can capture AI’s advantages without trading away the scarce intellectual property that gives entertainment its value.
