The most reliable setup is to make every automation state its destination explicitly. Use Obsidian URI’s new action with a vault-relative file path (or an absolute path when that is genuinely required), percent-encode the parameter values, and choose deliberately between appending and overwriting. If a workflow sends only a note name, Obsidian places the note according to the vault’s Default location for new notes setting.
Keep a small, stable folder taxonomy for machine-created notes, and treat it as your workflow’s convention rather than an Obsidian requirement. This makes destinations predictable without pretending that one universal hierarchy, attachment setting, or template policy exists.
The settings that matter first
Use an explicit destination when the workflow knows where the note belongs
The Obsidian URI reference documents two ways to identify a destination. The file parameter names a vault-relative file path, such as 00_Inbox/2026-10-16-meeting.md. The path parameter identifies a globally absolute filesystem path. An explicit destination keeps the placement decision visible in the automation request, which is useful when several folders receive different note types.

A vault-relative file is usually easier to move between computers because it does not embed a machine-specific filesystem location. Use an absolute path only when the integration is intentionally tied to one filesystem and can guarantee that the path exists and points to the intended vault location.

Maintain the default location when a workflow sends only a name
A new request that supplies name without an explicit destination delegates placement to Obsidian’s Default location for new notes preference. This is the right arrangement when you want to change the intake folder from Obsidian instead of editing every automation.
The trade-off is centralization: changing that preference changes the destination for every name-only workflow. Record the intended value in your automation documentation and review it after changing the setting. If a workflow has a different destination, give it an explicit file instead of relying on the global default.
Choose write behavior before allowing repeat runs
The URI reference documents append and overwrite for an existing note. Appending preserves the earlier file and adds the supplied content. Overwriting replaces the existing file when it exists and append is not set. Neither behavior is presented as a universal recommendation, so select the mode according to the data you are sending.

Enable Daily notes before using the daily action
The daily URI action opens or creates the daily note for the relevant date. The Daily notes core plugin must be enabled for that action. The daily action accepts the same parameters as new, so content and the append or overwrite choice can be supplied when the workflow needs them.

A folder convention that keeps automation understandable
Obsidian does not mandate a universal folder taxonomy for automated notes. The following layout is an example convention: adapt the names to your vault, keep them stable, and avoid treating the example as an official setting.

Number prefixes are optional. Their value is that they make a short list sort consistently; they are not interpreted specially by Obsidian. If your vault already has meaningful names, preserve those names and put the same routing rules behind them.
Keep machine-created notes in a clearly identified intake area
An intake folder gives you a place to inspect malformed titles, incomplete content, and notes that need linking before they enter long-term areas. Automations that already know the project or date can bypass the inbox with an explicit path. This two-lane approach avoids forcing every workflow into one destination while retaining a safe default for uncertain captures.
Separate destination policy from filename policy
A folder answers where a note goes; a filename answers how repeated runs are distinguished. Define both in the workflow. For example, a project importer might always target 10_Projects/Project-A/ and construct a date-plus-source filename, while a meeting capture might target 00_Inbox/ and use a timestamp. Obsidian’s URI documentation describes how to pass the path, but it does not define a general conflict-resolution or unique-name policy for you.

Explicit paths versus the default-location setting

These are practical consequences of the documented URI behavior, not a claim that one option is always superior. A useful rule is: use file for known categories, use the default location for generic captures, and reserve path for integrations that truly require an absolute filesystem address.
Constructing an Obsidian URI safely
Obsidian’s official Help page describes Obsidian URI as a route for automation and cross-app workflows. A typical creation request has the new action, a vault identifier, and either a destination or a name. The exact vault identifier and additional parameters depend on the calling workflow.
Create a note in a known folder
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=00_Inbox%2Fmeeting-notes.md&content=Agenda%0A%0AAction%20itemsHere the slash in the vault-relative file path is encoded as %2F, spaces as %20, and line breaks as %0A. The example illustrates the documented parameters; choose a filename and vault identifier that exist in your setup.
Let Obsidian choose the folder from the default
obsidian://new?vault=Work&name=meeting-notes&content=AgendaBecause no file or path is supplied, the note location comes from Default location for new notes. This is convenient for a shared capture workflow, but it is less explicit when several automations need different folders.

Append to an existing note
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=01_Daily%2F2026-10-16.md&content=New%20log%20entry&append=trueUse append when preserving prior content matters. Decide how entries will be separated in the content you send; the URI mechanism supplies the content, but your workflow must provide any headings or line breaks you want.
Replace a generated snapshot
obsidian://new?vault=Work&file=30_Reference%2Fsystem-status.md&content=Latest%20status&overwrite=trueOverwrite is appropriate only when replacing the file is intentional. A mistaken destination or an unexpectedly repeated run can otherwise destroy content that was meant to be retained. Test this mode against a disposable note before connecting it to important files.
Open or create a daily note
obsidian://daily?vault=Work&content=Daily%20capture&append=trueEnable the Daily notes core plugin first. The same encoding, content, append, overwrite, and destination considerations apply to the daily action as to the new action.

The URI documentation warns that reserved characters, including slashes and spaces, must be percent-encoded. Encode each parameter value before assembling the URI; do not encode the complete URI as one opaque string.

Malformed encoding can make a path appear to be a different parameter, place a note in an unexpected location, or produce unusable content. Log the final URI during setup with sensitive content removed, then verify the resulting note and path in Obsidian.
A repeatable setup procedure
- Classify the note. Decide whether it is an inbox capture, daily record, project note, reference item, or another category in your chosen taxonomy.
- Select the destination method. Use an explicit vault-relative
filefor a known category,namefor a workflow intentionally governed by the default-location preference, or an absolutepathonly when required. - Define the filename. Include enough date, source, or record identity to distinguish independent notes. Do not assume Obsidian will invent a collision-safe name for repeated requests.
- Encode every value. Percent-encode path separators, spaces, line breaks, and other reserved characters before constructing the URI.
- Choose the write mode. Set append for additive logs, overwrite for replaceable snapshots, or omit both when the workflow should create a normal new note.
- Test a new file. Confirm the vault, folder, filename, and content with a disposable example.
- Test a repeat run. Run the same request again and inspect whether the resulting behavior matches your retention policy.
- Document the contract. Record the expected folder, filename pattern, write mode, and the Obsidian setting on which the workflow depends.
Troubleshooting by symptom

Settings and conventions that are not established as universal rules
Current official URI documentation explains destination parameters and write mechanics, but it does not establish one mandatory template setting, attachment folder, filename-conflict policy, or universal vault hierarchy. Choose those elements to fit your workflow and verify exact labels against the Obsidian version you operate.
That distinction matters when maintaining a team vault. A convention such as 00_Inbox is useful only if the automations, humans, and cleanup process all agree on it. Treat folder names, default-location preferences, and filename formats as a small interface: change them deliberately, update dependent URIs, and test both first-run and repeat-run behavior.
Operational checklist
- Is the Daily notes core plugin enabled if any workflow uses
daily? - Does each known note category have an explicit, vault-relative destination?
- Do name-only workflows intentionally rely on Default location for new notes?
- Are slashes, spaces, and line breaks percent-encoded?
- Is append or overwrite selected according to whether history must survive?
- Can repeated runs be distinguished by filename or safely merged?
- Has the workflow been tested with a new note and with an existing note?
- Are absolute paths avoided where the vault must work across machines?
With those decisions recorded, automated notes become predictable: the URI expresses the destination and write behavior, while the folder convention supplies a human-readable map for reviewing, triaging, and maintaining the vault.
