No assistant in the available official documentation can be certified as never retaining or building a persistent personal profile. But ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini offer controls that can limit different kinds of carryover. The key is to distinguish saved chat history, memory or personalization, model improvement, and data retention: turning off one does not necessarily turn off the others.
What “remembering you” can mean
An assistant can retain or use information in several different ways. Chat history keeps conversations available in an account. Memory or personalization uses details from earlier interactions to tailor later replies. Model improvement concerns whether conversations may be used to improve the service’s models. Retention is how long a provider keeps data, including data that is not shown in chat history.
These controls are not interchangeable. A conversation missing from the history list may still be retained for a period, and a setting that limits model improvement does not necessarily disable personalization. Review each control for the specific effect the provider says it has.
How the major assistants’ controls differ

What Claude Incognito does—and does not do
Claude’s Incognito mode has the clearest stated temporary-chat retention period among these examples: Anthropic says chats are retained for 30 days by default. An organization may set a longer retention period. Within those stated limits, Incognito chats are excluded from chat history and Claude memory, and are not used to improve Claude.

Do not confuse that default retention period with Anthropic’s separate statement about model-training pipelines. The “up to five years” period applies only when the user allows chats or coding sessions to be used for model improvement, and to new or resumed chats after that setting is enabled. It does not describe every Claude conversation.
Check these settings before sharing personal details
- Review memory or personalization. Find the assistant’s memory controls and check whether saved details can be reviewed, removed or disabled. A general history control may not govern memory.
- Choose a temporary mode when appropriate. Confirm what the provider says it changes: history, memory, model improvement, or some combination. Do not assume “temporary” means “not retained.”
- Check model-improvement preferences separately. Look for the control governing whether chats or coding sessions may be used to improve models. For Claude, the setting has specific consequences for new or resumed chats after it is enabled.
- Inspect integrations and actions. If a prompt or its contents are sent to a connected service, that recipient may apply its own privacy policy. OpenAI explicitly notes this for GPT actions.
- Check whether the account is managed. Work or school administrators may apply organization-specific policies. Anthropic says an organization can set a longer retention period for Claude Incognito chats.
Which option fits your privacy concern?
- You do not want replies personalized from past chats: review and disable or clear memory or personalization, where the service offers that control. Temporary chat alone may not address all personalization settings.
- You do not want a conversation in ordinary chat history: use the service’s temporary or Incognito option, while checking its stated retention and account exceptions.
- You do not want chats used for model improvement: locate the model-improvement preference independently of history and memory controls.
- You are using an employer or school account: check the organization’s policy as well as the product’s user-facing settings.
- You are sending content to an integration: evaluate the receiving service’s terms and privacy policy, not only the assistant’s.
Bottom line: no blanket “doesn’t remember” guarantee
These services provide controls that can reduce persistence or personalization, but the documented effects differ. Claude Incognito, for example, separates history and memory from a stated default retention period; ChatGPT Temporary Chat is described in relation to memory and model training; Gemini’s announcement pairs temporary chats with personalization but does not establish comprehensive deletion. Choose controls according to what you want to limit, and treat retention, integrations and managed-account rules as separate parts of the privacy picture.
