If you keep receiving unexpected emails that ask for money or personal information, or urge you to act quickly, treat them as suspicious until you verify the sender independently. Some scams start with an ordinary-sounding message and no link, then build trust before asking for an upfront fee or directing you to a data-harvesting page. That pattern has been reported in recurring business offers, but it does not make every link-free offer a scam—or every unwanted email phishing.

Email was the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024, according to a 2025 Federal Trade Commission consumer alert. Here’s how to assess a message, respond safely, and recover if you already acted.

Why do I keep getting scam emails?

Scammers use email because it can reach many people and can be made to look as if it came from a trusted organization or person. A message might claim there is suspicious activity on an account, a payment problem, an unfamiliar invoice, a refund, or a free coupon. It may ask you to confirm personal or financial information, pay a fee, or open a link or attachment that could steal credentials or install malware.

Some recurring unsolicited business offers reportedly take a slower approach: the sender starts with relaxed, ordinary language and tries to establish trust before asking for an upfront fee or sharing a link that collects information. That is a reported pattern, not proof that every such offer is fraudulent. A message without a link can still be suspicious, and a link-free message is not automatically a scam.

Scam emails and unwanted marketing are not the same. An unfamiliar offer may be legitimate but unwelcome; phishing tries to deceive you into giving up information, money, or access. When you cannot establish who sent a message, do not engage with it just to find out.

How can I tell whether an email is a scam?

Look at what the message asks you to do and whether you have a real relationship with the supposed sender. A familiar display name or logo is not enough to prove an email is genuine.

  • Check the relationship: Do you have an account with the named bank, service, or company? Do you recognize the person or expect the message?
  • Watch for pressure or an unexpected benefit: Urgent account warnings, payment demands, surprise refunds, free coupons, and unfamiliar invoices are common stories used to prompt action.
  • Notice requests for sensitive information: Be wary of unexpected requests for passwords, financial details, or other personal information.
  • Do not rely on the message’s contact details: A phone number, reply address, link, or logo in the email does not independently verify its sender.

If the message might concern a real account, open the company’s website using an address you already know, or call a number from a trusted source. For a message from someone you know, check with them through a separate contact method. Don’t click an unexpected link or attachment to test whether the email is real.

Should I report it or unsubscribe?

Choose based on whether you can recognize the sender and establish that the message is legitimate.

What you received How to assess it What to do
Suspected scam or phishing You cannot verify the sender, do not have the relevant account or relationship, or the message unexpectedly seeks credentials, money, or personal information. Do not reply or follow its links. Report it using your email provider’s spam or phishing control, then delete it.
Unwanted but recognized marketing You recognize the sender and message as legitimate, even though you no longer want the emails. Use the sender’s unsubscribe option if you are confident it is genuine. If anything seems suspicious, treat it as phishing instead.

Federal Trade Commission guidance suggests unsubscribing from unwanted email, while the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s 2024 phishing tip sheet warns against clicking an unsubscribe link in a suspicious message. The practical distinction is confidence: unsubscribe from recognized legitimate marketing, but report and delete suspected scams without engaging.

How do I report a phishing email?

  1. Pause: Don’t reply, click a link, open an attachment, or call a number in the suspicious email.
  2. Verify separately if needed: Visit a known company website, call a number you already trust, or contact the person through a separate channel.
  3. Report it to your email provider: Use the provider’s built-in spam or phishing reporting control.
  4. Forward and report in the United States: The FTC recommends forwarding phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org and reporting the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  5. Delete the message: After checking and reporting it, delete it. The FTC’s 2025 alert advises: “Then, once you’ve checked it out and reported it, delete the message.”

How can I reduce the risk from future emails?

  • Enable multi-factor authentication: It adds a check beyond your password. A security key is one possible second factor; use a method supported by your account and devices, and make sure you can recover access if you lose it.
  • Keep devices and security software updated: Updates help address security weaknesses.
  • Back up important data: A backup can help if a device is compromised or files are damaged.

These measures can reduce account or device harm, but they do not make every incoming message safe or stop all scam email. A physical security key is optional, and compatibility varies by account and device.

What if I already clicked, replied, or paid?

Respond to what was exposed or what happened; different actions call for different recovery steps.

  • You disclosed a password: Change it promptly, and change it anywhere else you reused it. Turn on two-factor authentication for the account.
  • You shared personal information: In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov for guidance on identity-theft recovery.
  • You paid or shared payment information: Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider promptly and explain what happened.
  • You downloaded an attachment or file: Update your security software and run a scan if the download may have installed malware.
