For cloud-based folder access or a smoother move to another Windows PC, use OneDrive folder backup or Windows Backup instead. These options have different destinations and coverage, so choose based on what you need to protect.
Choose the right Windows 11 backup option

File History is the built-in choice here for local, versioned file backups. OneDrive and Windows Backup are cloud-oriented and are not the same as keeping an independent copy on a disconnected drive.
Set up File History for recurring local backups
File History periodically checks for changes and backs up modified files to an external drive or network location. Connect the drive you want to use before setup; if you use a network location, make sure it is available.
- Open Control Panel.
- Under System and Security, select Save backup copies of your files with File History.
- Select Turn on. If Windows has not selected the destination, choose Select drive, then select your external drive or network location.
- Check which folders are included. File History backs up Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop by default. To include other folders, add them to a library as described in Microsoft’s File History instructions.
- Keep the destination available so scheduled runs can reach it.
Check the schedule on your PC
Microsoft’s current support guidance describes File History as periodically scanning for changes and refers to the next scheduled backup, but does not specify a default interval or list the available choices. To see what your Windows 11 PC offers, open File History’s Advanced settings in Control Panel and check the interval shown there. Do not assume the same schedule applies to every Windows build.

If the drive was disconnected
File History cannot write to a destination that is unavailable. Reconnect the drive or restore network access, then either wait for the next scheduled run or open Control Panel > File History and select Run now. See Microsoft’s instructions for reconnecting a File History drive.
Use OneDrive folder backup for cloud access
OneDrive folder backup puts selected standard Windows folders in your OneDrive account so they can be accessed from other devices after syncing. To configure it:

- Open OneDrive settings.
- Select Sync and backup > Manage backup.
- Enable the folders you want to back up and save your changes.
OneDrive synchronization also reflects additions, changes, and deletions between the synced folder and OneDrive online. That makes it useful for access across devices, but syncing alone is not an isolated offline copy. Microsoft explains how to back up folders with OneDrive and how OneDrive synchronization works.
Use Windows Backup for a cloud-based PC transition
To configure Windows Backup, go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Microsoft’s overview describes this consumer-focused feature as backing up selected files and folders, settings, credentials, and apps through OneDrive, with data associated with a Microsoft account. Windows Backup is not a local, versioned external-drive backup like File History. Choose it when its cloud-based coverage and account-linked setup match your needs; check the available selections on your PC rather than assuming it copies every file or program.

File History is useful when you need an earlier version of a personal file or folder. Its purpose is file recovery; it should not be treated as a complete image of Windows or a backup of every file on every drive.

- Connect or make available the drive or network location containing the File History backups.
- Open Control Panel > File History.
- Use the File History restore option to browse backed-up folders and versions, then select the item you need to restore.
If the backup destination is not available, reconnect it first; otherwise, the saved versions cannot be browsed from that destination.
