Before jailbreaking a PS5 or attempting to install an alternate operating system, make a complete official console backup to a separate USB drive, sync eligible saves to PlayStation Plus, and separately preserve captures and any game data stored on external or M.2 storage. A normal backup protects your personal data, but it is not proven to preserve jailbreak files, encryption keys, licenses, or a modified system state—and restoring it is destructive.
What you should preserve first
A risky system change can leave the console unable to boot, erase its internal storage, or require a clean system installation. The safest preparation is layered rather than relying on one copy:
- Full PS5 console backup: Use the built-in Back Up Your PS5 function to copy selected games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings to a USB storage device.
- Cloud save sync: If you have PlayStation Plus, let eligible PS5 and PS4 saves finish synchronizing before changing the system.
- Separate capture and storage checks: Copy important screenshots and clips to USB, and record which games and apps are on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD because those copies are not included in the full console backup.
- Modification-specific files: Follow the documentation for the exact jailbreak or alternate-OS project. Official PlayStation backup guidance does not establish how to preserve exploit files, keys, licenses, boot files, configuration data, or a modified state.
Keep the USB backup and any separately copied files disconnected from the console after verification. That gives you an untouched recovery copy if the modification fails.

PlayStation’s supported whole-console method uses a USB storage device formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. It is different from a drive formatted as USB extended storage for installing games. PlayStation warns that not every USB device works, so verify that the drive can be formatted in one of the supported file systems and that it has enough free capacity for the categories you select.

The backup menu lets you choose the data types to include. Depending on your selections, the archive can contain:
- Installed games and applications stored on the console
- PS5 and PS4 saved data that the console includes in the backup
- Screenshots and video clips
- Console settings
It is a data backup, not a byte-for-byte image that promises to reproduce every part of the firmware. In particular, trophies and games or applications stored on USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD are excluded.
Step-by-step: make the USB console backup
- Prepare a separate USB drive. Use a drive that can be formatted FAT32 or exFAT. Do not assume that the drive currently used as USB extended storage for games can also hold the console backup.
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5. If the console asks to format it, understand that formatting erases the drive; move any existing files elsewhere first.
- Open the backup menu. Go to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Select the categories. Include games and apps, saved data, captures, and settings as appropriate. The more categories you select, the more space and time the operation needs.
- Start the operation. Select Next, then Back Up, and follow the prompts. The console restarts to perform the backup and restarts again when it finishes.
- Wait for the completion screen. Do not unplug the drive, shut down the console, or interrupt power during backup. PlayStation warns that an interruption can cause data loss or corruption and may damage the console or USB drive.
- Label and protect the copy. Note the date, console, account, and system-software version associated with the backup. Keep it in a safe location until the modified system has been tested.
The completion message is important: a drive that merely contains a partially written folder is not a verified recovery copy.

Trophies
Trophies are not included in the PS5 console backup. Synchronize them with PlayStation Network before making changes so your latest earned trophies are associated with your account. A backup cannot be treated as a trophy archive.
Games and apps on USB extended storage
The console backup excludes games and apps stored on a USB extended-storage drive. Make a list of those installations and retain the drive. The drive can generally be reconnected to the restored console, but the backup itself does not contain those files.

Games and apps on an M.2 SSD
Content installed on an M.2 SSD is also excluded. Record which SSD is installed and keep it with the console. The official backup guidance indicates that the SSD can be reinstalled in the restored console, subject to the console’s software and hardware requirements.
Jailbreak or alternate-OS internals
PlayStation’s standard backup documentation does not promise preservation of exploit payloads, custom boot components, keys, licenses, patches, partition layouts, or alternate-OS files. Whether any of those items can be exported depends entirely on the specific project and firmware version. Obtain its own prerequisite and recovery instructions before modifying the console; do not infer that the official backup contains them.
Cloud saves: useful second copy, not a replacement
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can synchronize saved data, which is valuable if the internal drive is erased. It does not replace the full USB backup because it does not preserve installed games, captures, settings, or the complete console state.
For PS5 saves, enable automatic synchronization and leave the console connected to the internet in rest mode as required by the account and system settings. For PS4 saves, PlayStation supports automatic upload when the relevant automatic-update and rest-mode connection settings are enabled. Before proceeding, open the save-management screen and confirm that the most recent save has completed uploading; an old cloud timestamp is not proof that the latest session is protected.
Cloud availability depends on the account and subscription status. Keep the account credentials available, particularly if you may need to sign in on another console.

For irreplaceable captures, open several copied files on a computer or another device. A file-transfer completion message alone does not prove that every clip is playable.

Account, firmware, and restore conditions
The backup is account-linked
Backup data is linked to the PlayStation account used to create it. Restoring to a different PS5 requires signing in with that same account. Store the account email, password, and any required two-step-verification method somewhere accessible before you begin.
Restore cannot be used as a firmware downgrade
PlayStation requires the system software on the destination console to be the same version or newer than the version installed when the backup was created. A restore is therefore not a supported downgrade mechanism. It also does not establish that a stock backup can undo a jailbreak or roll back an alternate operating system.
Restoring is destructive
The restore path is Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5. Select the USB drive and backup, then confirm. The console restarts during the process and restarts again when it finishes. PlayStation’s warning is explicit: “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.” Data already on the console that is not in the selected backup cannot be recovered afterward.
After a restore, Console Sharing and Offline Play is disabled. Re-enable it in the account and system settings if you want to use that feature again.

Do not confuse restore, default settings, and reset

A pre-modification checklist
- Make the full USB backup and wait for the completion screen.
- Confirm that the drive is a dedicated FAT32 or exFAT backup device, not merely a game-storage drive.
- Synchronize trophies with PlayStation Network.
- Verify the latest PS5 or PS4 save timestamp in PlayStation Plus cloud storage, if available.
- Copy important screenshots and clips to USB and open sample files elsewhere.
- List every game and app on USB extended storage and on the M.2 SSD.
- Keep those storage devices, the backup drive, and the console together but clearly labeled.
- Write down the PlayStation account credentials and two-step-verification recovery method.
- Record the PS5 system-software version and the date of the backup.
- Read the exact jailbreak or alternate-OS project’s requirements for keys, payloads, recovery images, licenses, and rollback procedures.
- Do not interrupt power or disconnect USB storage during a backup or restore.
What to do if the modification fails
If the PS5 still reaches the normal interface
Do not immediately reset it. Preserve the current state, copy any newly created logs or files required by the modification’s documentation, and decide whether the project provides a supported recovery path. If you choose to return to your previous data, use the official restore process only after confirming that the system software meets the same-version-or-newer requirement and that you accept the data-erasure warning.
If the console requires recovery mode
Use only recovery instructions published for the exact PS5 model and firmware context. The standard backup does not prove that a recovery-mode reinstall will retain a jailbreak or alternate OS. A reinstall or reset can erase data that was not included in the backup.
If content appears missing after restoration
Sign in with the account used to create the backup, reconnect the original USB extended-storage drive, and reinstall the original M.2 SSD if appropriate. Check whether the missing item was a trophy, a game on excluded storage, a cloud save that had not finished syncing, or media that was copied only one way. These exclusions explain many apparent backup failures.
Bottom line for a jailbreak or alternate OS
Use the official PS5 backup as your baseline protection: full console backup to FAT32 or exFAT USB, verified cloud saves, separately copied captures, and documented external or M.2 game storage. Treat it as protection for supported user data—not as a guaranteed image of the firmware or modification. The exact jailbreak or alternate OS determines which additional files and recovery materials matter, and its documentation is the authority for those items. Because restoration erases the console’s current data and cannot downgrade software, never begin without a verified backup and a recovery plan you understand.
