Farcaster’s “social smart contract” refers to two different things. The established Farcaster protocol uses blockchain registries to manage identities, signing keys and storage, while posts, likes and profile updates remain signed messages shared by hubs. A separate rollout reported on October 16, 2026, by TokenPost uses the same phrase for a Network School participation agreement: accepting it reportedly issues an on-chain access NFT and keeps posting enabled in the main client; declining reportedly leaves that client in read-only mode.
Those layers should not be confused. The protocol registries are documented technical infrastructure. The Network School agreement is an application-level access and moderation policy whose exact contract address, bytecode, chain and complete canonical terms were not established in the available reporting. Nothing currently verifies that its speech rules execute autonomously as blockchain code.
What Farcaster’s original smart contracts actually do
Farcaster is an open social protocol rather than a single database owned by one app. Its blockchain component is primarily a registry. The official overview describes a smart-contract registry on a Turing-complete blockchain that maps Farcaster identifiers to key pairs. In practical terms, the chain establishes who controls an account and which keys may act for it; it does not store every cast as a transaction.
A user action such as a post (called a cast), reaction or profile update is signed with an authorized key. Hubs then propagate, synchronize and merge those signed messages into a shared message graph that clients can read. This design keeps routine social activity off-chain while retaining cryptographic checks for identity and authorization.

The Id Registry: linking an FID to custody
Every Farcaster account has a Farcaster ID, or FID. The Id Registry maps that numeric identifier to a custody address. The custody address is the blockchain account that controls the FID and can authorize changes such as adding or removing signing keys. The protocol specification summarizes this role as: “The Id registry contract keeps track of the fids and their custody addresses.”
Because the FID is separate from a particular app, a client can display the same account without becoming the account’s owner. Control is anchored in the custody relationship recorded by the registry, not in a username field maintained by one website.
The Key Registry: authorizing signers
The Key Registry records valid signing keys for each FID. A user can authorize a key for a phone, browser, desktop app or other client, allowing that software to sign casts and reactions without handing over the custody account’s private key. Revoking a key removes its authority for future messages.

The Storage Registry: recording capacity and rent
The Storage Registry records storage units and the associated rent. Farcaster requires sufficient storage for an account’s messages. A message is accepted only when the FID is registered, the signer is valid and the account has enough storage available. Storage accounting therefore sits beside identity and key authorization as a protocol-level admission check.
Other contracts in the protocol deployment
Farcaster’s contracts repository lists more than the three core registries. It also includes Id Gateway, Key Gateway, Bundler, Signed Key Request Validator, Recovery Proxy, Fname Resolver, Tier Registry and Snapchain Config Registry. The repository lists version 3.1 deployments on OP Mainnet and Ethereum Mainnet. Addresses and versions can change, so a current deployment should be checked in the repository rather than copied from an old article or hard-coded without verification.
How a normal Farcaster message reaches other users
- Account control is established. A custody address controls an FID through the Id Registry.
- A client receives signing authority. The user authorizes a key in the Key Registry, usually for the device or application that will publish messages.
- The client signs an action. A cast, reaction or profile update is created and signed by the authorized key.
- Hubs validate and replicate it. Hubs check the FID, signer and available storage, then synchronize the valid message with other hubs.
- Clients read the shared graph. Different Farcaster clients can consume the replicated messages and present their own interfaces, feeds and moderation choices.
This flow explains the boundary between blockchain and social content. The registries provide durable identity, key and storage facts; hubs carry the high-volume message data. A cast is not automatically a transaction on the identity chain simply because it was signed cryptographically.
What the October 2026 “social smart contract” adds
TokenPost reported on October 16, 2026, that Network School acquired Farcaster from Neynar and introduced a user agreement called a “social smart contract.” In the reported design, the agreement is a participation gate for the main application. It is not the same thing as the Id, Key or Storage Registry.

A reproduced in-app notice describes the choice as an opt-in vote. A user who votes to stay signs with their Farcaster key, receives an NFT recording that vote and posts under a Network Code. A user who votes to leave becomes read-only in that client. The notice says the user keeps their keys, wallet, funds, followers and post history and may use another client or fork the open-source client.
What accepting reportedly does
- Records the user’s decision with an on-chain access NFT.
- Allows continued posting in the Network School-operated main client, subject to that client’s Network Code and moderation policy.
- Uses the user’s Farcaster key to sign the participation vote.
What declining reportedly does
- Changes the user to read-only status in that particular client.
- Leaves the underlying Farcaster identity, keys, wallet, funds, followers and history under the user’s control, according to the reproduced notice and reporting.
- Permits continued use of another compatible client or a fork of the open-source client.
“Read-only” is therefore an application permission, not a protocol-wide deletion. A client can refuse to accept new posts from an account while the account and its existing protocol data remain available elsewhere.
Is it a real blockchain smart contract or just terms of service?
The answer depends on which Farcaster layer is meant. The identity, key and storage registries are established smart contracts. The reported Network School arrangement is described as a “social smart contract” because it combines an agreement, a signed vote and an NFT recorded on-chain. However, the available sources do not establish a verified contract address, bytecode, complete canonical terms or definitive chain for that agreement.

Reporting also says the operator plans proof-of-humanity checks to reduce bots. Those are moderation and access-policy claims. Without published, verified code, they should not be described as Solidity functions that autonomously detect or enforce speech violations. In practice, the client operator may apply the rules through software, account review or eligibility checks, while the NFT records participation.

The safest interpretation is a hybrid: a protocol-level identity and key system underneath, plus an application-level contract and policy layered on top. The on-chain record may prove that a user accepted or rejected a choice, but it does not by itself prove that every moderation decision is executed by a blockchain program.
What happens to your account if you reject it?

These are reported outcomes, not a guarantee that every future client will expose every historical message or feature. A compatible client still has to index the relevant hubs, support the same protocol data and choose to display it.

The protocol’s separation of custody, signing keys and messages is intended to make client changes possible. A cautious move should preserve control of the credentials that authorize your account.

- Identify the client’s data support. Confirm that it reads the Farcaster protocol data you need, including your FID, messages, reactions and profile records.
- Use the official sign-in or key-authorization flow. Authorize a new signer only through a wallet or account flow you understand. Never paste a custody private key into an unfamiliar website.
- Review signer permissions. Check which keys are active and revoke any device or client you no longer trust.
- Confirm message visibility. After connecting, verify that your profile, followers and recent history are being indexed. A delay can reflect hub synchronization rather than data loss.
- Test a low-risk action. Publish a short test cast or reaction, then confirm that it appears through more than one compatible client.
- Keep recovery information secure. Losing custody access or an authorized key can prevent account recovery even when public messages remain visible.
Followers are not normally “exported” as a private spreadsheet during this process. They are relationships represented in protocol messages and reconstructed by clients that support the relevant data. The practical portability question is therefore whether the destination client indexes and displays those messages, not whether the Network School interface offers a download button.

How to compare the Network School client with another client
Use the following questions before treating two interfaces as equivalent:

| Recovery and exit | Can you remove a signer, recover custody and continue elsewhere if the client changes its policy? |
An NFT requirement can be a useful access credential, but NFT ownership alone does not guarantee that another client will honor it. Conversely, a client that does not require the NFT may still impose its own moderation or anti-bot rules.
Security, privacy and policy checks before signing
Verify what you are signing
Read the wallet prompt and the application notice separately. A message-signature request, a transaction that mints an NFT and a transaction that moves funds are different operations. The reported agreement says the user signs with a Farcaster key; it does not establish that the action requires transferring assets. Reject prompts that request broader wallet permissions than the stated participation vote needs.
Separate ownership from access
Keeping a wallet, funds and keys does not guarantee posting access in a particular interface. The reported arrangement illustrates the distinction: protocol ownership can remain intact while an application changes a user to read-only.
Treat moderation promises as policy, not code, until verified
Rules about hate speech, scams, stalking or AI disclosure may be enforceable through the client’s operations rather than through autonomous smart-contract logic. Look for a published policy, appeal process, proof-of-humanity explanation and verified contract details before assuming the rules are immutable or automatically applied.
What is confirmed and what remains uncertain
The Farcaster Protocol specification version 2023.11.15 documents the registry model: Id Registry for custody, Key Registry for authorized signers and Storage Registry for capacity and rent. The contracts repository lists version 3.1 deployments on OP Mainnet and Ethereum Mainnet, along with supporting contracts. Those details describe the established protocol layer.
The Network School acquisition and social-smart-contract rollout were reported on October 16, 2026. The access NFT, read-only outcome, portability claims and Network Code are based on that reporting and a reproduced in-app notice. The exact address, bytecode, chain, canonical legal text and implementation of moderation rules remain unverified in the available sources. Until those primary details are published, describe the arrangement as a reported application-level participation system layered on Farcaster, not as a fully verified autonomous social contract.
