A complete website building checklist covers planning, platform selection, content, design, accessibility, functionality, performance, SEO, security, launch testing, analytics, backups, and maintenance. A website is ready only when the live pages work for real users, search engines can access intended content, critical accounts are owned and protected, and someone is responsible for recovery and ongoing updates.

A polished preview is not proof that a website is ready. The checklist below treats a website as a continuing operational system rather than a one-time design project.

Key takeaways

  • Define the audience, business goal, conversion action, launch scope, ownership, and required functionality before choosing a platform or template.
  • Google’s minimum technical indexing requirements are that Googlebot is not blocked, the page returns a successful HTTP status, and the page contains indexable content; meeting those requirements does not guarantee indexing or rankings. Google’s technical requirements explain the distinction.
  • WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C Web Standard, but an automated scan or short checklist cannot prove that a website is fully accessible or legally compliant. Use WCAG 2.2 as the accessibility reference and add manual testing.
  • Google’s good Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP below 200 milliseconds, and CLS below 0.1; good scores support user experience but do not guarantee search rankings. Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance provides the thresholds.
  • A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs but is only a hint, not an indexing guarantee; a sitemap is limited to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs unless split into files or an index. Google’s sitemap documentation covers these limits.
  • Launch with a tested backup, redirect map, analytics plan, rollback owner, and documented access to the domain, hosting, CMS, DNS, email, payment, and analytics accounts.

1. What should you decide before building a website?

Decide what the website must accomplish before selecting a builder, CMS, theme, or technology stack. Starting with a template often creates a site that looks attractive but cannot support the required booking, commerce, localization, permissions, integrations, or publishing workflow.

Write the core project brief

  • Website type: Identify whether the project is a brochure site, portfolio, blog, publication, membership site, online store, booking service, community, web application, or campaign landing page.
  • Primary audience: Describe who the site serves and what those visitors are trying to accomplish.
  • Problem and value: State the problem the website solves and why the visitor should trust the organization.
  • Primary conversion: Choose the most important next action, such as a call, form submission, booking, purchase, signup, download, donation, or store visit.
  • Secondary conversions: Record useful supporting actions without allowing them to compete with the main goal.
  • Launch scope: Separate content and features that must exist on launch from enhancements that can follow later.
  • Constraints: Record budget, deadline, languages, locations, integrations, legal requirements, accessibility needs, staff capacity, and expected traffic.
  • Ownership: Assign the owner for the domain, hosting, CMS, code, content, analytics, payment account, billing, and post-launch maintenance.

Produce these planning documents

  • One-sentence purpose statement
  • Audience and user-job summary
  • Primary and secondary conversion goals
  • Launch scope and deferred-feature list
  • Page inventory or sitemap
  • Content responsibility matrix
  • Technical requirements list
  • Budget that includes renewals, add-ons, transaction fees, maintenance, and professional services
  • Approval process, launch owner, and rollback owner

For an existing website, add a URL inventory, traffic and conversion baseline, list of critical integrations, redirect plan, and backup of the current site before changing anything.

2. Which website platform should you choose?

Choose the platform that satisfies the required content, commerce, workflow, ownership, and maintenance needs at an acceptable total cost. No single builder is best for every website.

Requirement Likely fit Main trade-off
Simple brochure or service site Hosted builder such as Wix or Squarespace Recurring fees, plan limits, and platform lock-in
Design-heavy marketing site Webflow or custom development Learning curve, plan complexity, or higher development cost
Product catalog and checkout Shopify or another ecommerce platform Subscription, payment, app, theme, and commerce-specific costs
Blog, publication, or extensible content site WordPress or another CMS-oriented platform Plugin, theme, update, security, and governance work
Complex application or unusual integrations Custom development or a specialized platform Ongoing engineering, infrastructure, testing, and security responsibility
Temporary campaign or prototype Lightweight builder or static site May not scale into a full CMS or application
Multiple editors and approval workflows Managed CMS with roles and publishing controls More governance and permission management

Compare platforms using the same scorecard

  • Required page types and templates
  • CMS and publishing workflow
  • Ecommerce, booking, membership, or account requirements
  • Custom code, APIs, webhooks, and integrations
  • SEO controls, canonical URLs, redirects, sitemap, and robots directives
  • Accessibility controls and semantic markup
  • Performance, caching, CDN behavior, and script management
  • Backups, restore testing, exportability, and migration options
  • User roles, permissions, and auditability
  • Analytics, consent, and conversion tracking
  • Multilingual, multi-region, and search capabilities
  • Support quality and technical continuity
  • Total cost, including renewal rates, add-ons, plugins, themes, email, payment fees, and maintenance
  • Ownership and portability of the domain, content, customer data, and accounts

How do Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Shopify, and WordPress differ?

Wix and Squarespace are usually practical for small businesses, freelancers, portfolios, and brochure sites that value bundled hosting and a lower operational burden. Wix’s plans page shows a free tier and paid Light, Core, Business, and Business Elite tiers, but Wix says displayed currency and pricing vary by location; paid plans can connect a custom domain, and qualifying annual or multi-year plans may include a first-year domain voucher. Check the Wix plans page for the reader’s country and billing term.

Squarespace is a strong candidate for visually polished portfolios, personal brands, and small-business sites. The official Squarespace launch checklist includes custom domains, forms, SEO, Search Console, analytics, and store checks. The Squarespace pricing research did not expose a reliable US-dollar table in the accessible view, so do not treat an unverified number as a universal price.

Webflow suits designers, agencies, and marketing teams that need detailed visual control and a structured design system. On August 18, 2026, Webflow displayed a free Starter option, a Basic site plan at $15 per month billed yearly, a Premium plan at $25 per month billed yearly, a Team platform plan at $2,500 per month with an annual contract, and custom-priced Enterprise service. Webflow states that prices are in USD per site and that taxes are added at checkout; verify the current Webflow pricing page before budgeting.

Shopify is the more natural choice when the website is primarily an online store because catalog, inventory, checkout, payments, shipping, and commerce workflows are central features. The pricing page was observed in an India-localized context on August 18, 2026, showing Basic at ₹1,499 per month billed yearly or ₹1,994 per month billed monthly, plus higher tiers and payment-provider percentages. Those are India-context figures, not US pricing; check Shopify pricing for the store’s location.

WordPress.com fits blogs, publications, and content-led sites that want a managed WordPress ecosystem. On the observed pricing page, WordPress.com displayed a free plan and a promotional Personal plan from $2.75 per month on a longer billing term, with other term-dependent prices including $4 per month annually and $9 per month monthly. The page also showed 6 GB of storage, a qualifying first-year free domain, and auto-renewal information. Treat those figures as promotional and term-dependent; review WordPress.com pricing before purchase. Managed WordPress does not remove the need to govern plugins, themes, updates, permissions, security, and backups.

Custom or self-hosted development is justified when the site needs unusual application logic, specialized workflows, deep data control, or complex integrations. Custom control also means ongoing responsibility for infrastructure, security, monitoring, testing, documentation, and technical continuity if the original developer leaves.

3. How should you handle the domain, hosting, and ownership?

Put every business-critical account under the organization’s or owner’s control, not a contractor’s personal account. A website can be technically complete yet operationally fragile if the person paying the bills cannot recover the domain, hosting, analytics, or payment account.

  • Choose a short, pronounceable, defensible domain and check for trademark or naming conflicts.
  • Register the domain in the correct organization or owner account.
  • Enable registrar two-factor authentication and renewal notifications.
  • Record renewal dates, billing contacts, and recovery email addresses.
  • Choose whether the bare domain or www is canonical.
  • Redirect the noncanonical hostname to the canonical hostname.
  • Confirm DNS records before launch.
  • Verify HTTPS on the final domain and redirect HTTP to HTTPS.
  • For domain-based email, verify MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records.
  • Document access to the registrar, DNS provider, hosting account, CMS, analytics, Search Console, payment processor, email provider, and source repository.
  • Confirm whether the platform permits downloadable backups and independent restoration.

A hosted builder may bundle hosting and SSL, but bundled infrastructure does not answer who owns the domain, billing account, administrator accounts, content, analytics, customer data, or recovery process.

4. How do you plan the sitemap, URLs, and navigation?

Create a page inventory before visual design so the navigation, content model, URL structure, and search strategy support the real site rather than the template preview.

  • Group pages into categories that visitors understand.
  • Use plain labels instead of internal jargon.
  • Keep primary navigation focused.
  • Make every important page reachable through crawlable links.
  • Use descriptive, stable URLs.
  • Define heading hierarchy for each template.
  • Plan internal links between related services, products, articles, locations, or authors.
  • Use breadcrumbs where they improve orientation.
  • Design a useful 404 page with a route back to relevant content.
  • Decide which pages are linked in navigation but which pages are discoverable only through contextual links.
  • Mark pages that should be indexable, noindexed, password-protected, or excluded from search.

Google’s developer guidance recommends crawlable <a> links and a structure in which pages can be reached from other findable pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Special cases to resolve early

  • A one-page site still needs meaningful headings, navigation anchors, metadata, forms, and analytics.
  • A JavaScript-heavy site needs unique URLs for distinct screens or content.
  • Faceted ecommerce navigation can create large numbers of duplicate or low-value URL combinations.
  • Multilingual and multi-region sites need a language, URL, content, and ownership strategy before publication.
  • A redesign needs a redirect map before old URLs disappear.
  • Local businesses with multiple locations need consistent location pages, contact details, hours, and conversion paths.

5. What content must be ready before launch?

Launch content should be complete, accurate, audience-specific, legally usable, and connected to a clear next action. Placeholder copy and unverified claims are launch blockers, not minor polish issues.

Core content checklist

  • Homepage value proposition
  • About or credibility information
  • Services, products, programs, or offerings
  • Pricing or useful pricing guidance where appropriate
  • Contact details, hours, locations, and response expectations
  • Clear calls to action
  • Qualifications, reviews, case studies, trust signals, or policies where relevant
  • Privacy notice
  • Terms or purchase conditions where relevant
  • Shipping, returns, refund, cancellation, or warranty information for commerce
  • Accessibility statement where appropriate
  • Copyright and image-license records

Content quality assurance

  • Remove placeholder text, dummy links, sample products, and template branding.
  • Verify names, addresses, phone numbers, prices, dates, hours, product details, and staff information.
  • Check spelling, grammar, claims, capitalization, and consistency.
  • Use language that matches the intended audience.
  • Give every major page one clear primary action.
  • Check downloadable files for current content, accessibility, and correct links.
  • Set social-sharing titles, descriptions, and images.
  • Confirm that every image is licensed for the intended use.
  • Explain what happens after a visitor submits a form.

Google’s Search Essentials recommend people-first, helpful, reliable content and using words that people would use to search for the content. Keywords, metadata, and structured data do not automatically produce rankings.

6. How should the design behave on mobile and desktop?

Build reusable components and test content resilience rather than approving only a desktop mockup or template preview.

  • Establish typography, colors, spacing, buttons, forms, cards, alerts, menus, and other reusable components.
  • Keep components consistent across page templates.
  • Test narrow mobile widths, standard laptop widths, large desktop widths, and zoomed text.
  • Test portrait and landscape orientations.
  • Check long headings, large prices, translated text, validation messages, and unusually long names.
  • Ensure sticky headers, pop-ups, cookie banners, and chat widgets do not cover content or controls.
  • Make tap targets usable and do not rely on hover-only interactions.
  • Make keyboard focus visible.
  • Allow required motion to be paused, stopped, or hidden.
  • Check that image crops preserve essential information.
  • Test dark mode or high-contrast configurations if the design supports them.
  • Test browser text zoom and increased system font sizes.

Common responsive failures include desktop-first layouts that become unusable on phones, text embedded in images, fixed elements covering form controls, ambiguous repeated buttons, mouse-only menus, and color-only status indicators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. How do you make a website accessible?

Integrate accessibility into planning, content, components, forms, testing, and maintenance. Use WCAG 2.2, published by the W3C as a Web Standard, as the current reference point, but do not claim that a generic checklist alone makes a website fully accessible or legally compliant.

  • Ensure sufficient contrast for text and controls.
  • Make every interactive function keyboard accessible.
  • Provide visible keyboard focus.
  • Associate form labels correctly with their controls.
  • Explain errors in clear text and identify how to fix them.
  • Do not rely only on color, sound, shape, or position.
  • Use logical heading order and descriptive link text.
  • Give buttons clear accessible names.
  • Provide captions for videos and transcripts or audio description where needed.
  • Prevent keyboard traps.
  • Manage focus correctly in dialogs, menus, and other dynamic interfaces.
  • Set the document language and text direction correctly.
  • Check PDFs and downloadable documents for accessibility.
  • Test with keyboard navigation, browser zoom, reflow, and screen readers.

Automated scanners can identify detectable issues but cannot prove full accessibility. Manual keyboard, zoom, screen-reader, and—where possible—testing with disabled users remain necessary. Webflow’s accessibility checklist also warns that a WCAG-derived checklist does not guarantee full accessibility.

8. What functionality should you test?

Test successful, invalid, interrupted, and recovery paths for every important feature. A form that appears on screen but loses submissions is not functional.

Test these routes

  • Main navigation, logo, home link, breadcrumbs, and footer links
  • Site search and empty or irrelevant search results
  • Contact, newsletter, quote, and support forms
  • Login, logout, account creation, and password reset
  • Booking or appointment flow
  • Product variants, add-to-cart, checkout, payment, and order confirmation
  • Coupon or discount codes, failed payments, refunds, and cancellations
  • Downloads, maps, embedded media, social links, and chat tools
  • CRM, email, marketing, automation, webhook, and API integrations
  • Cookie preferences and consent-dependent scripts
  • 404 and 500 error pages
  • Contributor roles, permissions, and account recovery

Form test procedure

  1. Submit valid data.
  2. Submit missing required fields.
  3. Try invalid email and phone formats.
  4. Test long input, special characters, and duplicate submissions.
  5. Complete the form with keyboard navigation only.
  6. Confirm that a clear success or error message appears.
  7. Confirm that the owner receives the submission.
  8. Confirm that the data is stored where expected.
  9. Check that spam controls do not reject legitimate submissions.
  10. Verify that privacy and retention behavior matches the stated policy.

Ecommerce test procedure

Check product names, descriptions, images, variants, inventory, prices, taxes, shipping zones, shipping rates, payment methods, failed payments, refunds, cancellations, order confirmation, customer emails, inventory decrement, mobile checkout, currencies, locales, legal purchase terms, fraud controls, and chargeback procedures. Shopify’s website checklist similarly treats conversion, security, responsiveness, accessibility, redirects, backups, compliance, and integrations as ecommerce launch checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. How do you improve website performance?

Improve the pages that users actually need under realistic conditions. A perfect laboratory score is less important than a site that loads, responds, remains stable, and allows visitors to complete important tasks.

  • Compress and appropriately size images.
  • Use modern image formats where supported.
  • Do not upload oversized images and scale them down only with CSS.
  • Remove unnecessary third-party scripts.
  • Defer noncritical JavaScript.
  • Avoid excessive animation and video backgrounds.
  • Use caching and a CDN where appropriate.
  • Reserve image, ad, and embed dimensions to prevent layout shifts.
  • Test on real mobile connections, not only fast office Wi-Fi.
  • Test with privacy protections and ad blockers where those conditions matter to the audience.
  • Measure the homepage and important page templates.
  • Monitor real-user data after launch.
Metric Google good threshold What to investigate when it is poor
LCP, or Largest Contentful Paint 2.5 seconds or less Server response, hero images, render-blocking resources, and slow content delivery
INP, or Interaction to Next Paint Less than 200 milliseconds Long JavaScript tasks, heavy third-party scripts, and slow event handlers
CLS, or Cumulative Layout Shift Less than 0.1 Unreserved image, ad, font, and embed dimensions

The thresholds in the table come from Google’s Core Web Vitals documentation. Fix failures in this order: pages that fail to load or become unusable, slow server response or rendering, oversized hero images and blocking scripts, layout shifts, excessive third-party tags, and minor visual optimization. Google says page experience involves multiple signals and warns against optimizing only for a perfect report score; see Google’s page experience guidance.

10. How do you prepare SEO and indexing before launch?

Make the intended public pages understandable and crawlable, then verify that staging restrictions and launch directives do not block them. SEO preparation improves technical clarity; it does not guarantee rankings or indexing.

On-page checklist

  • Give every indexable page a unique, descriptive title.
  • Write a useful meta description.
  • Use one clear primary heading and logical subheadings.
  • Use descriptive, stable URLs.
  • Write descriptive internal-link text.
  • Add relevant alternative text to meaningful images.
  • Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content and follows search-engine guidelines.
  • Include location information for local businesses where relevant.
  • Remove duplicate or near-duplicate pages.
  • Make important content available in crawlable HTML or accessible DOM content.

Google’s developer guidance covers descriptive titles and metadata, semantic HTML, crawlable links, sitemaps, canonical URLs, JavaScript, and duplicate-content handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indexing and crawl-control checklist

  • Keep staging pages password-protected or explicitly non-indexable until publication.
  • Remove accidental noindex directives from public pages.
  • Do not block important CSS or JavaScript resources.
  • Generate or confirm the XML sitemap.
  • Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console.
  • Inspect priority URLs after launch.
  • Check canonical tags and preferred protocol and hostname.
  • Test old-to-new redirects and look for broken links and soft 404s.

Do not use robots.txt as a substitute for access control or deindexing. Google explains that robots.txt controls crawling but is not a reliable way to keep a page out of search results; use noindex or password protection when exclusion is the goal.

Google’s minimum technical requirements are narrow: Googlebot must not be blocked, the page must return a successful HTTP status, and the page must contain indexable content. Those requirements do not guarantee that Google will index or rank a page.

A sitemap is a discovery hint rather than a guarantee. A sitemap file can contain up to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs; larger sites must split sitemaps or use a sitemap index. Google’s sitemap documentation explains the format and limits.

Useful checks for technically managed sites

curl -I https://example.com/
curl -I http://example.com/
curl -I https://example.com/old-page
curl -s https://example.com/robots.txt
curl -s https://example.com/sitemap.xml
  • The final URL should return 200 OK.
  • HTTP should redirect to HTTPS.
  • Old URLs should return the intended 301 redirect.
  • robots.txt should not accidentally block the whole site.
  • The sitemap should be reachable and contain preferred absolute URLs.

Hosted platforms may provide equivalent dashboard checks rather than shell access. Menu labels and capabilities vary by platform, plan, geography, and version.

11. How do you secure a website and protect visitor data?

HTTPS protects data in transit, but HTTPS alone does not secure vulnerable software, weak passwords, compromised accounts, or unsafe third-party scripts.

Security checklist

  • Use HTTPS everywhere.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication for the registrar, hosting, CMS, analytics, payment, and email accounts.
  • Use unique passwords stored in a password manager.
  • Remove former staff and contractor access.
  • Apply least-privilege permissions.
  • Update the CMS, themes, plugins, libraries, and server software after testing.
  • Delete unused plugins, themes, accounts, and integrations.
  • Use reputable payment providers.
  • Protect administrative and login endpoints.
  • Configure backups and test restoration.
  • Monitor uptime and significant security events.
  • Document vulnerability-reporting and incident-response contacts.
  • Keep secrets and private API keys out of public client-side code.
  • Review third-party scripts and their data access.

Privacy and compliance checklist

  • Identify the personal data collected and why it is collected.
  • Identify processors and third parties.
  • Document retention and deletion practices.
  • Publish a privacy notice.
  • Configure cookie consent where legally required.
  • Prevent nonessential analytics or advertising tags from firing before required consent.
  • Collect only necessary information in forms.
  • Make unsubscribe and preference-management flows work.
  • Review special requirements for cross-border, children’s, health, financial, or other sensitive data.

A generic checklist cannot promise legal compliance. Obligations depend on jurisdiction, industry, audience, data practices, accessibility requirements, contract terms, and whether the website sells goods or services. High-risk projects should receive qualified legal or privacy advice.

12. What belongs in the final pre-launch checklist?

Use the final gate to separate launch blockers from optional polish. A website should not launch with broken conversions, inaccessible critical paths, exposed staging content, missing ownership, insecure administration, or no recovery plan.

Before publishing

  • Complete content, brand, legal, and stakeholder review.
  • Confirm all pages, URLs, headings, titles, descriptions, canonicals, sitemap, and robots directives.
  • Check responsive layouts, zoom, keyboard navigation, and major accessibility requirements.
  • Test forms, commerce, accounts, integrations, notifications, and error paths.
  • Test performance on representative devices and connections.
  • Verify HTTPS and DNS configuration.
  • Confirm backups and a tested restoration process.
  • Confirm staging privacy and indexing controls.
  • Create and review the redirect map.
  • Configure analytics, conversion events, and consent behavior.
  • Assign the launch owner and rollback owner.
  • Record the current version or deployment state.

During publishing

  • Put the site into the intended production state.
  • Connect or switch the domain.
  • Verify DNS and certificate behavior.
  • Remove temporary staging restrictions only when production is ready.
  • Confirm administrator permissions.
  • Run smoke tests on the homepage, navigation, forms, checkout, login, and contact routes.
  • Inspect the live source and live URLs, not only the preview.
  • Submit or resubmit the sitemap when appropriate.
  • Inspect priority URLs in Search Console.

Immediately after publishing

  • Test from a private or incognito window.
  • Test at least one mobile device and one desktop browser.
  • Check redirects from important old URLs.
  • Verify confirmation emails and internal notifications.
  • Confirm analytics events and consent behavior.
  • Check platform, server, email, and payment logs.
  • Scan for broken links.
  • Confirm that staging pages are not indexed.
  • Monitor uptime, errors, forms, checkout, and traffic.
  • Keep the old site or rollback copy available for an agreed migration period.

13. How do you verify a site after launch?

Run a live smoke test immediately after the domain points to production, then investigate failures by branch rather than assuming every problem has the same cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Symptom First checks Recovery action
Domain does not resolve DNS records, nameservers, propagation, and certificate status Restore the known-good DNS configuration and confirm the canonical hostname
Forms appear successful but no message arrives Form destination, spam filtering, integration logs, sender authentication, and storage Enable a reliable notification route, preserve submissions, and test again with valid and invalid data
Checkout fails Payment provider, currency, tax, shipping, inventory, mobile flow, and error logs Pause promotion if necessary, restore the previous checkout or payment configuration, and test a complete order
Old pages disappear after redesign Redirect map, server rules, canonical URLs, and Search Console reports Restore relevant 301 redirects and keep equivalent content at stable destinations
CMS update breaks the site Recent update, plugin or theme conflicts, deployment logs, and backup integrity Restore the tested backup or previous version, isolate the conflict, then update in a staging environment
Site is compromised Account access, unexpected files or users, logs, updates, and third-party services Restrict access, preserve evidence, rotate credentials, restore a known-clean version, patch the cause, and follow the incident plan
Pages are not indexed HTTP status, noindex, robots.txt, canonical tags, sitemap, internal links, and indexable content Correct technical blockers, request inspection where appropriate, and allow time; a sitemap is not a guarantee

14. What should happen after launch?

Frequency Maintenance tasks
Weekly or ongoing Review forms, orders, bookings, automated emails, uptime, critical integrations, security alerts, analytics anomalies, Search Console reports, broken links, and urgent content errors.
Monthly Apply updates after testing, verify backup completion, periodically test restoration, review users and permissions, check key-template performance, review failed conversion paths, update hours and prices, review privacy scripts, and check renewals.
Quarterly or after major changes Run a fuller accessibility review, retest forms and checkout, review redirects and 404s, audit third-party services, test disaster recovery, reassess platform fit, review analytics events, and test new browsers and devices.

Keep documentation current for account ownership, deployment history, vendors, integrations, backups, restoration steps, renewal dates, and incident contacts. Documentation is part of the website’s reliability, especially when an agency hands the site to a client or the original developer leaves.

  16. Ignoring renewal prices, transaction fees, app costs, and maintenance.
  17. Forgetting failed payments and other error paths.
  18. Assuming HTTPS alone makes the website secure.
  19. Using generic claims, fake reviews, or unlicensed images.
  20. Never assigning responsibility for post-launch maintenance.

16. How should special website projects adapt the checklist?

Use the same lifecycle checklist, then add requirements for the project’s risk and operating model.

  • Migration or domain change: Export the old site, inventory valuable URLs, map redirects, preserve analytics history where possible, and keep a rollback copy.
  • Multilingual or multi-region site: Decide URL, language, translation, currency, tax, content ownership, and regional SEO rules before publishing.
  • Local business: Verify every location’s address, hours, phone number, map, service area, and contact conversion.
  • Ecommerce: Test taxes, shipping, currencies, inventory, payments, refunds, cancellations, fraud, emails, and legal purchase terms.
  • Booking or membership site: Test availability, time zones, account recovery, cancellations, permissions, reminders, and private content.
  • Health, financial, or children’s data: Minimize collection and obtain specialist privacy and security advice.
  • Public-sector or education site: Treat accessibility, procurement, records, security, and content governance as project requirements, not optional enhancements.
  • Single-page application: Give distinct content and screens meaningful URLs, ensure rendering exposes important content, and test navigation, focus, history, and error states.
  • Agency handoff: Transfer domain, hosting, CMS, analytics, Search Console, payment, DNS, source, design, and backup ownership before the contract ends.
  • AI-assisted build: Human-review facts, accessibility, security, brand accuracy, copyright, privacy, generated code, and every important user path.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important item on a website building checklist?

The most important item is defining the website’s purpose, primary audience, and primary conversion before choosing a platform or design. That decision determines the required content, navigation, integrations, analytics, and testing scope.

Does a sitemap guarantee Google indexing?

No. A sitemap is a hint that helps Google discover URLs, not a guarantee that Google will crawl or index them. Important pages must also be accessible to Googlebot, return a successful status, and contain indexable content.

How do I make a website accessible?

Use WCAG 2.2 as the reference, then combine semantic markup, keyboard access, visible focus, correct labels, useful alternative text, sufficient contrast, captions, clear errors, zoom and reflow testing, and screen-reader testing. Automated scanners find some issues but cannot prove full accessibility.

How often should I back up a website?

Backups should be verified on an ongoing schedule appropriate to the site’s change rate, and restoration should be tested periodically. A backup that exists but cannot be restored is not a dependable recovery plan.

What should I test immediately after launching a website?

Test the live homepage, navigation, forms, login, checkout or booking flow, confirmation emails, redirects, HTTPS, analytics events, robots.txt, sitemap, mobile layout, and key error paths from a private browser window and representative mobile and desktop devices.

The Bottom Line

A website building checklist is complete only when the website has a clear purpose, usable content, tested functionality, accessible interaction, acceptable real-world performance, correct crawl and indexing controls, protected accounts, documented ownership, measurable conversions, verified backups, and an assigned maintenance owner. Going live is the beginning of that operating cycle, not the finish line.
