Yes. You can use a virtual phone number on a smartphone that connects through an eSIM, because the two serve different purposes. An eSIM connects the device to a mobile carrier; a virtual-number service handles calls or messages through its own app, network, or call-forwarding setup. Installing an eSIM does not automatically give you a virtual number.

What an eSIM does—and what a virtual number does

An eSIM is a SIM profile provisioned digitally to a secure element built into a device. It authenticates the device to a mobile operator so the phone can use the subscribed cellular plan. The GSMA’s eSIM overview explains that the profile is securely downloaded to the device; it remains a SIM, even though there is no removable card.

A virtual phone number is managed by a separate calling or messaging service. The provider handles calls and, depending on the service, messages for that number. The number is not automatically created by activating an eSIM, and it is not necessarily a carrier-issued number attached to the eSIM plan.

Can I use a virtual number with an eSIM?

Usually, if the phone, cellular plan, and virtual-number service are each supported. The eSIM can provide cellular data while a calling app uses the internet to handle the virtual number. The app may instead use Wi-Fi, or the service may forward calls to a linked phone number. Some services support more than one method, so check how your provider is configured.

Google Voice is one documented example: users can make and receive calls in its app or at its website, and can optionally link phone numbers so calls to the Google Voice number ring on those phones. That describes Google Voice, not every virtual-number provider. See Google Voice Help.

Can I have two phone numbers on one phone?

Yes, but the numbers may work through different systems. For example, a phone can have a carrier number associated with its eSIM plan and a separate virtual number used in a service’s app. Whether calls and messages arrive in the same place, whether caller ID shows the number you expect, and whether both numbers can be used at once depend on the phone and each provider’s features and settings.

Do not assume that the virtual number behaves like a second carrier line. An app-based number may require an internet connection and an active account; a forwarded call may ring on a linked carrier line. Check separately whether the service supports incoming and outgoing calls, ordinary SMS, voicemail, and any message types you need.

Will a virtual number work when I travel with an eSIM?

It can, if you have a working internet connection and the service permits use in your location. A travel eSIM may provide cellular data for the virtual-number app, while Wi-Fi can provide the connection instead. If the service relies on call forwarding, calls may depend on the linked number and its coverage, settings, and charges rather than on the travel eSIM alone.

Travel does not guarantee that every feature will work. Country availability, account rules, SMS support, verification messages, emergency calling, and forwarding behavior vary by provider and region. Confirm those details with the provider for the countries where you will use the number; test the needed functions before relying on them.

What to check before setting it up

  1. Confirm the exact phone model and regional variant support eSIM. Compatibility can differ by model and market. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance describes iPhone requirements and regional differences; other manufacturers set their own requirements.
  2. Check the phone’s lock status. If you want to use an eSIM from a different provider, the phone may need to be unlocked. Apple says an unlocked iPhone can use eSIM plans offered by other network providers; see Apple’s provider availability guidance.
  3. Verify carrier, country, and activation support. The carrier or travel provider must support eSIM for your device and intended location. Depending on the carrier, setup may use carrier activation, eSIM transfer, a QR code, an app, a link, or manual entry. Apple lists these possibilities in its setup instructions.
  4. Set up the virtual-number service separately. Install its app or follow its setup instructions, then check whether calls use the app over internet data, forward to linked numbers, or offer both. For Google Voice, the available app/web calling and optional forwarding are described in Google Voice Help.
  5. Test the functions you actually need. Try incoming and outgoing calls, ordinary SMS, voicemail, caller ID, and travel use. If you need verification texts, test those too; a provider may not support every verification message or short code.

Which virtual-number service should I choose?

Start with your country and use case, then verify details in the provider’s current terms and support pages. Features that differ between services are not guaranteed by having an eSIM.

Calls, texts, and emergency access are not universal

A virtual-number service may not support all SMS, verification texts, or emergency calls. Capabilities depend on the provider, region, connection, account settings, and service terms. Google Voice’s personal-service terms describe limitations specific to that service; they should not be treated as rules for all virtual numbers. Review the Google Voice Personal terms or the applicable provider’s current terms, and keep an appropriate way to reach emergency services for your location.
