Neither TiVo nor Xfinity is universally better. Xfinity X1 is the more clearly documented choice for existing Xfinity TV customers who want DVR playback through the provider’s boxes and app. TiVo EDGE for cable has stronger listed standalone hardware figures—six tuners and 2 TB of storage—but its product page now redirects to support, and current sales and activation availability are unconfirmed.

Which is better for recording more shows?
On paper, TiVo EDGE’s indexed comparison lists six tuners, while Xfinity says a standard X1 DVR can record up to six programs at once. Xfinity’s older Pace XG1 v1 is limited to five. Those figures suggest similar maximum recording counts for the standard devices, but TiVo’s listed figure should be treated as a vendor specification from an indexed page rather than confirmation of a currently available product.
Storage is harder to compare: TiVo lists a 2 TB drive, while Xfinity describes capacity as an estimated number of hours. Xfinity’s overview lists 150 hours for TV Core or certain legacy tiers and 300 hours for other tiers. Check the specific Xfinity package and DVR tier rather than assuming every customer receives the larger allowance.

Xfinity playback and downloads
Xfinity says completed recordings can stream on as many as five devices, inside or outside the home. In-progress recordings can stream to the app only when the device is connected to in-home Xfinity Wi-Fi. Completed recordings can also be downloaded for offline viewing. Xfinity sets a limit of 50 downloads per device; a checked-out download is viewable only on that device until it is returned to the DVR library. TiVo’s indexed EDGE comparison describes app or online access and the option to expand to other rooms with TiVo Mini devices. Because the current EDGE product URL redirects to TiVo Support, the indexed page does not establish that the hardware, service, or those features can be obtained and activated now in a particular area. Confirm availability before relying on this setup.
How do commercial-skipping features differ?
TiVo’s indexed EDGE comparison lists SkipMode, with availability varying by region and recording. Xfinity lists Smart Resume for eligible recordings. Neither feature is guaranteed for every channel or program, so do not make the choice on the assumption that all recorded shows will skip commercials automatically.

Those are dated, local figures—not nationwide prices—and exclude applicable taxes and other charges. Check the rate card and package terms for your address before estimating the total cost.

Has Xfinity recording scheduling changed?
Yes. Xfinity’s recording instructions state that channel-based recordings with custom start and end times ended in August 2026. Single-program and series recordings remain available. - Choose Xfinity X1 as the more practical fit if you already subscribe to Xfinity TV and value its documented integration with Xfinity boxes, app streaming, and offline downloads. Verify your local plan, storage tier, and fees.
- Consider TiVo EDGE only after confirming availability if its listed standalone capacity or TiVo Mini expansion appeals to you. Verify that new hardware, service, CableCARD access, and activation are actually available where you live.
The central trade-off is straightforward: Xfinity’s current support documentation describes a connected service with defined playback features, while TiVo EDGE’s listed hardware specifications are attractive but do not establish current local availability.
