That breadth makes Calm a particularly good choice for people whose needs change from day to day. You might use a short breathing exercise during a stressful afternoon, a guided meditation before work, and a Sleep Story or soundscape at night without switching apps.

What is free in Calm?

Calm’s free tier is limited, but it is not merely a token demo. In the app, go to Discover → Meditation → Less Guidance to find free timed meditations. Free users can also access Day 1 of each multi-day program, one guided breathing exercise, the Blue Gold Sleep Story, and free background scenes. A padlock identifies Premium material.

Calm’s free-content availability can change. The company also says that completing the seven-day trial without subscribing unlocks the complete 7 Days of Calm series and additional free Sleep Stories. Check the current Calm free-content documentation before assuming a particular title is included.

Price and subscription warning

When checked, Calm’s U.S. website displayed a seven-day trial followed by $69.99 annually. It also displayed a promotional $39.99 one-time Calm for Life offer. Calm’s separate support documentation lists $499.99 for its Premium Lifetime Membership. Those figures should not be treated as one universal lifetime price: eligibility, location, platform, and promotion can change what appears at checkout. Use Calm’s current plans page and pricing explanation for the offer attached to your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One important edge case: purchasing Calm Lifetime does not automatically cancel an existing Apple, Google, or web subscription. Cancel the old recurring subscription separately if you switch plans, as explained in Calm’s lifetime-membership guidance.

Choose Calm if: you want the broadest polished package, especially one that covers both meditation and sleep. Choose another app if you mainly want a structured course or insist that every feature remain free.

2. Headspace — best for beginners who want a clear curriculum

Headspace is the easiest recommendation for a complete beginner who does not want to browse thousands of unrelated sessions. Its strength is sequencing: the app guides you through a defined introduction instead of asking you to decide among an enormous catalog on day one.

Headspace is no longer only a meditation app. Its current offering includes sleepcasts, sleep music, soundscapes, sleep-health courses, and mental-health coaching alongside meditation. That makes it a credible alternative to Calm for users who want sleep support, but Headspace remains more compelling when a clear learning path matters most.

  • Dual Layer Meditation Cushion Set: Includes a 24" x 24" meditation cushion and a 17.7" x 9.8" support pillow, creating a stable base for sitting on floor. • 2 Knee Cushions and Hip Support: Designed with two side knee pillows and a center support piece to help cushion knees, ankles, legs and hips during meditation or yoga practice. This meditation mat for adults works well for sitting on floor, kneeling positions, breathwork and longer quiet routines where extra yoga pillow is needed
  • Supportive Foam for Steady Sitting: Filled with soft yet supportive foam, this meditation pillow offers a fuller and more structured feel than many cotton-filled floor cushion. The foam helps the zafu meditation cushion keep its shape through regular use, while the zafu zabuton style layout creates a balanced base for meditation, yoga, reading and relaxation
  • 3 Shapes for Flexible Practice: Use the pieces together or separately as a corner floor cushion、yoga cushion or knee support pillow. The flexible 3-shape design adapts to different people and sitting positions, making it suitable for cross-legged sitting, kneeling, stretching, floor exercises and relaxed home seating

The floor pillow for adults is vacuum-compressed for shipping; after opening, gently pat and shake each piece, then allow 24–48 hours for full expansion and a softer, fuller sitting feel

Headspace says the monthly plan is the only option billed month to month. A seven-day trial converts to monthly billing, while a 14-day trial converts to annual billing. Read the checkout screen carefully and set a reminder before the trial ends if you only want to sample the service.

As a U.S. reference, Headspace’s current sleep-plan page showed a 14-day trial followed by $69.99 per year, or a seven-day trial followed by $12.99 per month. Offers can differ on the general subscription page, in the App Store, and in Google Play. The official purchase instructions explain the current purchase paths.

Choose Headspace if: you are new to meditation and want an instructor-led progression with a polished sleep library. Choose Calm if you want more variety immediately, or Medito if avoiding a subscription is your priority.

3. Insight Timer — best free library

Insight Timer is the best choice for maximum selection without paying. Its free tier includes more than 300,000 guided practices, along with sleep tracks, music, courses, live classes, breathing exercises, and a customizable meditation timer.

The size of the catalog is both its main advantage and its main weakness. You can find practices for highly specific goals and styles, but the voices, terminology, quality, and spiritual orientation vary more than they do in tightly curated apps such as Headspace or Calm. Treat the app as a large directory rather than assuming every teacher or track will suit you.

How to use the free timer

  1. Tap Timer in the bottom navigation.
  2. Scroll down.
  3. Tap Revert to Basic Timer.

The basic timer does not require MemberPlus. This is useful if you already know how to meditate and only need bells, silence, and a duration rather than spoken guidance.

What MemberPlus adds

Insight Timer’s paid MemberPlus plan costs $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year, with a seven-day free trial. It adds ad-free listening, offline downloads, premium tracks, advanced courses, high-quality audio, and enhanced player controls. See the company’s MemberPlus information and free-feature documentation for the current distinction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interpret “free library” as “everything is free.” Premium tracks, many structured courses, offline listening, and some advanced features require MemberPlus.

Choose Insight Timer if: you want the greatest amount of free material or a flexible unguided timer. Choose Headspace or Waking Up if you are likely to feel overwhelmed by an open-ended teacher-generated catalog.

  • Durable & Easy to Clean: Made with high-quality materials for long-lasting use; the removable velvet cover is machine-washable for effortless maintenance

4. Waking Up — best for serious, secular practice

Waking Up is designed for people who want to understand meditation rather than use it only as a relaxation soundtrack. It combines guided practice with theory, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, conversations, Q&A, and nondual teachings. The company says its current library contains more than 600 hours of audio.

The best starting point is the Introductory Course, which provides a month of daily meditation and mindfulness lessons with Sam Harris. The app may be a poor fit if you want only a two-minute stress break or sleep stories; its explanatory and philosophical material is central to the experience, not incidental.

Current app navigation

Waking Up moved search from Home to Explore. Its current bottom navigation is:

  • Home: Daily Meditation, Daily Wisdom, and Continue Listening.
  • Explore: Practice, Theory, Life, conversations, Q&A, and Search.
  • My Library.
  • More: Meditation Timer, messages, and settings.

Sessions can be customized with countdowns, starting and ending bells, background sounds, and additional silence. That makes it more flexible than a fixed audio player for users who want instruction followed by a longer quiet period. The customization guide explains those controls.

Price and financial assistance

When checked, Waking Up’s website showed $129.99 annually or $19.99 monthly. The company says web pricing is more than 13% lower than its in-app price, so compare the checkout route before subscribing. Waking Up also offers a scholarship for people who cannot afford membership. See the current checkout page.

Choose Waking Up if: you want a secular, intellectually serious course and are comfortable with a higher price. Choose Happier Meditation for a more conversational practical approach, or Headspace for a simpler beginner curriculum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Balance — best for personalized beginner plans

Balance builds meditation sessions around your answers instead of relying only on fixed playlists. It asks about your meditation experience, goals, obstacles, and preferences, then assembles sessions and adjusts recommendations as your needs change.

The app offers personalized ten-day plans, shorter sessions called Singles, sleep stories, color noise, breathing exercises, and progress tracking. This approach is useful when you know what outcome you want—such as better focus or easier sleep—but do not know which meditation style or session length to choose.

Free access and current price reference

Balance’s support documentation says it does not currently offer a permanent free version. You may encounter a trial or promotional offer, but that is not the same as an ongoing free tier. The current U.S. Google Play listing, updated June 15, 2026, showed $11.99 per month, $69.99 per year, or $399.99 lifetime. Prices can vary by country; check the Google Play listing or your own checkout screen.

Choose Balance if: personalization is more valuable to you than a huge catalog or permanent free access. Choose Medito or Insight Timer if cost is the deciding factor.

6. Happier Meditation — best for skeptical users and practical mindfulness

The app formerly known as Ten Percent Happier is now called Happier Meditation. Some app-store subscription labels still use legacy 10% Happier wording, so old reviews and checkout entries can make the current product look more confusing than it is.

Happier Meditation emphasizes practical, relatable mindfulness rather than presenting meditation as an abstract or mystical practice. It includes more than 500 guided meditations, personalized tools, and sessions aimed at sleep, stress reduction, and concentration. Its tone makes it a strong fit for someone who is curious but skeptical of exaggerated wellness claims.

Pricing and recent content changes

The current U.S. Apple App Store listing shows an Annual Membership of $99.99 and monthly options including $14.99. The listing also displays older or alternate in-app entries such as $79.99 and $59.99, which is why it is safer to use the in-app checkout rather than assume one universal price. The current Apple listing also says the iPhone version requires iOS 17 or later and supports iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac with Apple silicon, and Apple Vision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 10% Happier Podcast is no longer available inside the Happier app. Current Shorts content includes Teacher Talks and other podcast material instead. This is worth knowing if you are following an older review that recommends the podcast as a built-in feature; see Happier’s Shorts announcement.

Choose Happier Meditation if: you want approachable instruction focused on real-life stress, sleep, and concentration. Choose Waking Up if you want more theory and philosophy, or Headspace if you prefer a more linear beginner course.

7. Medito — best completely free app

Medito is the clearest choice for anyone who rejects subscriptions, advertising, accounts, and paywalls. The Medito Foundation says that all meditations, courses, sleep stories, breathing exercises, daily content, and timer features are free forever.

Medito has:

  • No subscription.
  • No premium tier.
  • No advertisements.
  • No account requirement.
  • iOS and Android availability.
  • An open-source project operated by a nonprofit foundation.

Its current content includes beginner courses, 30-day challenges, sleep stories and sounds, breathing exercises, stress and anxiety sessions, daily meditations, and an unguided timer with ambient sounds. The Medito app page provides the current feature list, while the project’s source repository documents its open-source development.

Retrospec Sedona Meditation Cushion, Buckwheat Pillow, Meditation Pillow
  • NATURAL COMFORT & SUPPORT: Filled with sustainable buckwheat hulls, this meditation cushion elevates your practice by aligning your spine and hips - no more achy joints during those long sessions
  • CUSTOMIZE YOUR ZEN: Unzip the inner compartment to add or remove buckwheat hulls, creating the ideal firmness for your comfy chair experience - whether you're meditating or relaxing
  • ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN: The 100% cotton cover keeps your workout space free from microplastics. Machine washable and built to last, it's as gentle on the planet as it is on your body
  • VERSATILE COMPANION: Double as physical therapy equipment or exercise support. The sturdy handle makes it easy to carry from home workouts to outdoor bench sessions
  • MINDFUL ENGINEERING: Expertly crafted to boost circulation and maintain proper posture, helping you stay focused on your practice instead of fidgeting for comfort on your yoga mat

The trade-off is scope. Medito is simpler and less expansive than Calm, Headspace, or Insight Timer, and it does not compete with Balance’s personalization system. Its advantage is that the complete product remains accessible without a payment funnel.

Choose Medito if: you want a dependable starting course and basic sleep, breathing, and timer tools without spending money. Choose Insight Timer if you want far more teachers and formats, even though some of its catalog is paid.

Which meditation app should you choose?

Your priority Best first choice Why
I want one app for meditation and sleep Calm It combines guided sessions, Sleep Stories, soundscapes, music, breathing, and movement.
I have never meditated and want instructions in order Headspace Its structured curriculum reduces the need to choose among many teachers and techniques.
I want the biggest free selection Insight Timer Its free library contains more than 300,000 practices and includes a basic timer.
I want to study why meditation works Waking Up Practice is paired with theory, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and conversations.
I want the app to adapt to my goals Balance It uses your experience, obstacles, preferences, and goals to assemble recommendations.
I am skeptical of mystical or exaggerated wellness language Happier Meditation Its teaching emphasizes practical, relatable mindfulness.
I will not pay or tolerate ads and paywalls Medito The foundation says its full meditation app is free forever, with no subscription, ads, or account.

How to evaluate a meditation app before subscribing

  1. Start with the actual problem. Decide whether you need a course, sleep audio, stress support, focus practice, or an unguided timer. An app with hundreds of thousands of tracks is not automatically better for a beginner.
  2. Try at least three sessions with the same goal. Compare a short session, a longer session, and a session from the program you would realistically follow. The instructor’s voice and amount of silence matter as much as the feature list.
  3. Separate a trial from a free tier. A trial provides temporary access and may convert to paid billing. Insight Timer has a substantial free tier, while Medito says all of its content is free forever. Balance explicitly says it does not currently have a permanent free version.
  4. Check where billing occurs. Website, Apple, and Google Play prices may differ. This is particularly relevant for Headspace, Waking Up, Calm, and Happier Meditation.
  5. Review the renewal date. Headspace’s seven-day and 14-day trials convert to different billing schedules, depending on the plan. Use the exact terms shown at checkout rather than relying on an old review.
  6. Confirm device-specific features. Balance’s vibration-based Immersive Meditations are currently iOS-only, and Happier Meditation’s Apple listing requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone.
  7. Do not pay for duplicate coverage. If you already use Insight Timer’s free timer or Medito’s free courses, a second subscription should provide a clearly different benefit—such as Calm’s sleep catalog, Waking Up’s theory, or Balance’s personalization.

Our verdict

Calm earns the overall recommendation because it covers the most situations, particularly when meditation and sleep belong in the same app. Headspace is the more focused beginner choice. Insight Timer delivers unmatched free-library breadth, while Medito is the best answer for genuinely free access without ads or a subscription.

The remaining three are more specialized: Waking Up for depth and secular theory, Balance for personalization, and Happier Meditation for practical mindfulness that may appeal to skeptical users. Start with the app whose teaching style and payment model match your actual habits—not the one with the longest feature list.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which meditation app is completely free in 2026?

Medito is the clearest completely free option. The Medito Foundation says its meditations, courses, sleep stories, breathing exercises, daily content, and timer features are free forever, with no subscription, premium tier, ads, or account requirement. Insight Timer also has an unusually large free tier, but some tracks, courses, offline listening, and advanced features require MemberPlus.

Is Balance a permanently free meditation app?

No. Balance’s support documentation says it does not currently offer a permanent free version. Trials and promotional offers may be available, but the current U.S. Google Play listing showed paid monthly, annual, and lifetime plans.

Are Ten Percent Happier and Happier Meditation the same app?

Yes. The app formerly called Ten Percent Happier is now called Happier Meditation. Some Apple App Store subscription labels still contain legacy 10% Happier wording. Also note that the 10% Happier Podcast is no longer available inside the Happier app; current Shorts content includes Teacher Talks and other podcast material.

Is Calm or Headspace better for beginners?

Headspace is usually the better fit if you want a clearly sequenced introduction. Calm is the better choice if you want beginner meditation plus a broader mix of sleep stories, soundscapes, breathing, music, and movement. Both have limited free access or trials, so try the teaching style before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does buying Calm Lifetime cancel an existing subscription?

No. Calm says that a Lifetime purchase does not automatically cancel an existing Apple, Google, or web subscription. Cancel the old recurring plan separately if you switch to Lifetime.

Which app is best for learning the theory behind meditation?

Waking Up is the strongest fit. It combines guided meditation with theory, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, conversations, Q&A, and nondual teachings. Its Introductory Course provides a month of daily meditation and mindfulness lessons.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick Calm for the best all-around meditation-and-sleep package, Headspace for a guided beginner curriculum, Insight Timer for the largest free catalog, and Medito when free forever means exactly that. Waking Up, Balance, and Happier Meditation are better targeted choices for theory, personalization, and practical skeptical-friendly instruction.
