The best legal free music download site depends on what you want to do with the music. For a personal music library, start with Bandcamp, Free Music Archive, Jamendo Music, or an artist-enabled download on SoundCloud. For music in a YouTube video, podcast, livestream, or other project, start with YouTube Audio Library, Mixkit, Pixabay Music, Incompetech, ccMixter, or a track whose individual Creative Commons license clearly permits your use.
A free download is not automatically a free-use license. The rights holder must authorize the download, or the track must be offered under terms such as Creative Commons, CC0, public domain, or a clearly stated production-music license. That permission may cover listening but not remixing, redistribution, video synchronization, monetization, games, broadcasts, or client work.
This list includes 11 reputable sources for artist-authorized, openly licensed, public-domain-oriented, or clearly licensed production music. It does not imply that current major-label albums are legally available as free downloads.

For podcasts: Incompetech, ccMixter, Free Music Archive, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, and appropriately licensed Jamendo tracks.
For client work, games, apps, broadcasts, or physical releases: Do not rely on the word free. Choose CC0, CC BY, or a production license that expressly covers the exact project and distribution method.

| Site | Best for | What you get | Typical rights model | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Free Music Archive | Creative Commons discovery | Direct downloads with track-level license information | Creative Commons, public domain, and other stated terms | Licenses vary; some prohibit commercial use, remixing, or video synchronization |
| 2. Jamendo Music | Independent music discovery | Artist-authorized downloads from a broad catalog | Generally Creative Commons terms on the free Music service | Commercial synchronization is handled separately through Jamendo Licensing |
| 3. Bandcamp | High-quality indie downloads | Artist-set free or name-your-price files, often in several formats | Download permission from the artist or label; reuse rights are separate | A free download does not automatically clear a video, podcast, advertisement, or client project |
| 4. Internet Archive Audio | Historical recordings and unusual audio | Item-specific MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, and other files | Varies by item, uploader, collection, and rights statement | Archive.org hosting is not itself a license |
| 5. Musopen | Classical music and education | Recordings, sheet music, and educational resources | Public-domain-oriented and item-specific terms | Availability, formats, and access can vary by item and membership level |
| 6. ccMixter | Remixes, samples, stems, and a cappella tracks | Creative Commons music and samples | Track-specific Creative Commons licenses | Many works are noncommercial; attribution and derivative-work rules matter |
| 7. SoundCloud | Artist-approved downloads | A file only when the uploader enables the official download control | Uploader-authorized download; a separate reuse license may not exist | Most tracks are stream-only, and direct track downloads are web-only |
| 8. Pixabay Music | Background music for creator projects | Direct downloads under Pixabay’s custom content license | Pixabay Content License, with track-specific details where applicable | Royalty-free does not mean public domain or unrestricted redistribution |
| 9. YouTube Audio Library | YouTube videos and Shorts-related creator work | MP3 downloads from YouTube Studio | YouTube Audio Library terms; some tracks require attribution | It is optimized for YouTube, not automatically a universal cross-platform license |
| 10. Mixkit | Online video and podcasts | Direct downloads under Mixkit’s free stock-music license | Mixkit Free License | Free music excludes uses including CDs, DVDs, video games, and TV or radio broadcasts |
| 11. Incompetech | Instrumental production music | Kevin MacLeod tracks, generally available as direct MP3 downloads | Usually CC BY for the free route, with required attribution | You must use the supplied credit unless you obtain another license |
The ranking is an editorial recommendation based on legal clarity, usefulness, actual file availability, portability, catalog value, and audience fit. It is not a claim that every catalog item has identical rights or that every site is equally suitable for every project.
First decide whether you want listening music or project music
There are four different things people often mean by a “free music download”:
- An artist-authorized file: An artist or label enables fans to download an MP3, FLAC, WAV, or another file. This normally permits obtaining and listening to the file, but does not necessarily permit reuse in another work.
- Openly licensed music: A track is offered under Creative Commons, CC0, or another license that spells out copying, editing, attribution, and commercial-use rights.
- Production music: A library grants permission to synchronize music with video, podcasts, advertising, streams, or other media under a stated stock-music license.
- Offline playback: An app stores an encrypted or controlled copy for listening inside that service. This is not the same as receiving an exportable audio file.
If you only want music for headphones, artist-authorized downloads are usually enough. If the track will accompany a video, podcast, game, advertisement, livestream, or client project, read the license before downloading and again before publishing.
The 11 best legal sources
1. Free Music Archive: best overall for open-license discovery
Free Music Archive is the strongest general starting point for readers who want downloadable music and are prepared to check the license for each track. FMA is built around original music from independent artists and exposes usage filters for public-domain material, commercial use, video or remix use, and specific Creative Commons variants.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow to download:
- Open FMA’s advanced search.
- Search by artist, title, genre, mood, or keyword.
- Use the Usage filters, such as Public Domain, Commercial Use, or Use in a Remix or Video.
- Open the individual track page and record the exact license displayed there.
- Use the official download control and copy any required attribution into your project credits.
FMA says visitors can download without creating an account, but interface and access requirements can change. More importantly, “free” does not mean every track can be used, altered, redistributed, or synchronized with video. FMA’s older Limited License: Download Only, for example, permits personal downloading, listening, and streaming but does not authorize video, redistribution, broadcast, or podcast use. Because synchronization with video is a derivative use, a NoDerivatives track is generally unsuitable for a video unless you obtain additional permission. See the FMA FAQ and FMA help pages for the license details.
Best for: Personal listening, student projects, podcasts, videos, and music discovery when track-by-track license checking is acceptable.
Verdict: The best overall recommendation for readers who understand that the license—not the download button—controls reuse.
2. Jamendo Music: best for a broad independent catalog
Jamendo Music is a large independent-music service offering free listening and downloads from artist-uploaded music. Its free Music service and its commercial Jamendo Licensing service should be treated as separate products.
How to download:
- Use Jamendo Music rather than Jamendo Licensing when looking for free listener downloads.
- Browse by genre, mood, artist, or playlist.
- Open the specific track or release.
- Read the license and permitted-use information on that page.
- Download using Jamendo’s official control.
The free download is useful for listening and may fit a noncommercial or attributed project, depending on the track’s terms. For commercial videos, advertising, sponsored podcasts, client work, or other business uses, compare the project with Jamendo’s paid licensing options. Jamendo documents different permissions for online video, podcasts, social media, corporate content, broadcast, games, apps, and physical distribution; those categories should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
Best for: Discovering independent music and finding a clear path from free listening to a paid commercial synchronization license.
Verdict: A strong catalog for listeners and creators, but never treat every Jamendo Music download as commercially cleared.
3. Bandcamp: best for high-quality artist-authorized downloads
Bandcamp is the best option when “free download” means obtaining a real, portable, high-quality file directly from an independent artist or label. Artists can offer releases for free or as name your price downloads, sometimes with a zero minimum.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Bandcamp’s help center lists MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF as supported download formats. MP3 is the easiest choice for phones and general playback; FLAC is useful for a lossless personal archive; WAV and AIFF are more suitable for editing, although they use considerably more storage.
How to download:
- Open the artist’s release page.
- Look for Free, $0, or name your price.
- Enter zero if the artist permits it, or pay if you can support the artist.
- Complete the download and select the format you want.
- Extract the ZIP archive if Bandcamp provides the release in a compressed package.
A free Bandcamp download normally establishes that the artist or label authorized you to obtain the file. It does not automatically grant permission to put the song in a YouTube video, podcast, commercial, game, advertisement, or client project. Bandcamp treats using purchased music in videos, commercials, and podcasts as a separate rights question; a zero-price download should be treated at least as cautiously. See Bandcamp’s download help and its guidance on using music in videos, commercials, and podcasts.
Best for: Personal libraries, independent music, lossless downloads, and supporting artists.
Verdict: The best source for artist-authorized ownership and format choice—not a blanket source of free production music.

Internet Archive Audio is particularly valuable for historical recordings, live music, old-time radio, spoken-word material, public-domain-oriented collections, and audio that is difficult to find elsewhere. Individual items may offer MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, or other deposited files.
How to download safely:
- Open the individual item page rather than relying only on a search result.
- Read the Rights, License, or Usage information.
- Determine whether the item is public domain, Creative Commons licensed, permission-based, or restricted.
- Download from the files listed on that item page.
- Save the rights statement, uploader notes, item URL, and download date with the file.
Internet Archive is a host for many collections and uploaders. A download button proves that a file is available through the item page; it does not, by itself, prove that the recording is public domain or cleared for commercial reuse. Live Music Archive material may be available for listening or personal use without permission for advertising, synchronization, or redistribution.
Best for: Research, archival listening, rare recordings, historical audio, and unusual live or spoken-word material.
Verdict: Essential for breadth, but never a blanket “copyright-free music” source.

5. Musopen: best for classical music and public-domain resources
Musopen focuses on classical recordings, sheet music, textbooks, and educational material. It is one of the clearest specialist choices for classical music and public-domain-oriented projects.
How to use it:
- Search or browse the music catalog.
- Open the individual recording or work page.
- Check whether the recording is available for free download and which format is offered.
- Confirm the rights status of the specific recording, not just the composer or composition.
- Download through the official item page.
Access and formats can vary between items and membership levels, so do not assume that every recording is available in every format without an account or paid membership. Also remember that classical music has two potentially separate copyrights: the underlying composition and the particular sound recording.
Best for: Classical background music, music education, sheet music, and historical repertoire.
Verdict: The best specialist recommendation for classical material, provided you verify the individual recording’s conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. ccMixter: best for remixes, samples, stems, and a cappella tracks
ccMixter is designed specifically around remixes and samples rather than simply offering a catalog for passive listening. Its submissions are marked with their applicable Creative Commons licenses, making it useful for creators who need stems, loops, a cappella vocals, or material to transform.
How to use it:
- Search ccMixter or browse the project catalog.
- Open the individual submission.
- Identify the exact Creative Commons license attached to that track or sample.
- Check commercial-use, remix, attribution, ShareAlike, and redistribution conditions.
- Download the source or sample using the official control.
- Include the required attribution and license information in the finished project.
Many ccMixter works are noncommercial. A remix may also inherit restrictions from the source material, so checking only the remix title is not always enough. The site’s terms place responsibility on the user to comply with the applicable license.
Best for: Remixes, sampling, podcasts, videos, experimental music, and projects that benefit from stems.
Verdict: One of the best creator-oriented sources, but a poor choice if you do not want to read license conditions.
7. SoundCloud: best for artist-approved downloads
SoundCloud belongs on this list because some artists explicitly enable a direct download. It should not be treated as a general MP3-harvesting site.
Official download path:
- Use SoundCloud on the web and sign in if requested.
- Open the individual track page.
- Look beneath the waveform for Download file.
- Click the control only when the uploader has enabled it.
- Save the original file provided by SoundCloud.
SoundCloud says that not all tracks are downloadable, playlists cannot be downloaded as a whole, and direct track-file downloads are not available from mobile devices. Paid subscribers may be able to save content for offline listening, but that is not the same as receiving an MP3 or WAV that can be exported to another application.
If the official download control is missing, treat the track as stream-only. Do not use a SoundCloud-to-MP3 converter as a substitute. An uploader enabling a download generally authorizes obtaining a copy; it does not necessarily authorize commercial synchronization, remixing, or redistribution. Look for a separate Creative Commons notice or written permission from the creator.
Best for: Finding independent artists who have intentionally made individual tracks downloadable.
Verdict: Legitimate and useful, but entirely track-dependent.
8. Pixabay Music: best for simple creator background music
Pixabay Music is organized as a creator-oriented stock-music library. It is a practical place to look for background music for videos, tutorials, presentations, vlogs, and social content.
How to download:
- Search by genre, mood, duration, or keyword.
- Open the individual track page.
- Read the license summary and any track-specific information.
- Download from the official page.
- Save the track URL and a copy of the Pixabay Content License summary with your project files.
- Check for any attribution or Content ID instructions associated with that particular track.
Pixabay uses its own content license rather than applying Creative Commons to every asset. “Royalty-free” means the license may avoid recurring royalty payments; it does not mean that the music is public domain, that you own the copyright, or that you may redistribute the audio as a standalone file. A permitted use also cannot guarantee that an automated platform will never issue a mistaken claim.
Best for: Background music in online videos, presentations, tutorials, and social posts.
Verdict: A convenient production-music option when you follow the individual track and platform license.
9. YouTube Audio Library: best for YouTube-specific use
YouTube Audio Library is the safest first stop for a YouTube creator who wants to minimize copyright friction. It provides production music and sound effects, supports filters for genre, mood, artist, attribution, and duration, and lets users download music as MP3 files. YouTube says new releases are added twice a month.
How to download:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open the left-hand menu and select Audio library.
- Choose the Music tab.
- Search by title, artist, keyword, genre, mood, or duration.
- Use the attribution filter to find tracks that do not require credit.
- Hover over the track’s date and click Download.
- If attribution is required, copy the supplied credit into the video description.
YouTube says the Audio Library is available inside YouTube Studio and provides a direct Audio Library destination. Standard Audio Library tracks can be filtered by attribution requirements. Tracks marked Creative Commons still require the supplied credit.
This is a YouTube-focused recommendation, not a promise of unlimited cross-platform rights. Do not confuse Audio Library permissions with separate Creator Music licenses, which may have one-video or platform-specific restrictions. YouTube also says creators remain responsible for clearing third-party audio rights and that Audio Library music can be used in monetized videos under its stated terms.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Best for: YouTube videos, creator channels, and projects where YouTube compatibility matters most.
Verdict: The lowest-friction choice for YouTube, but not necessarily the best library for podcasts, games, broadcast, or physical media.

10. Mixkit: best for online video and podcast background music
Mixkit publishes a dedicated free stock-music license and is easy to use for many online projects. Its official information says free music can be used for YouTube, blogs, music videos, websites, social media, podcasts, and online advertisements. Attribution is appreciated but not required under the free music terms.
How to download:
- Browse the free stock-music catalog.
- Filter by genre or mood.
- Open the individual track page.
- Download the audio file from Mixkit.
- Save the track page and a copy of the current Mixkit license with the project records.
The restrictions are important: Mixkit says its free music cannot be used in CDs, DVDs, video games, or TV and radio broadcasts. Therefore, it is not “free for any use.” It is a particularly convenient choice for permitted online projects, not a universal license for every type of distribution.

11. Incompetech: best for recognizable instrumental production music
Incompetech provides Kevin MacLeod’s instrumental music, including direct MP3 downloads and copy-ready attribution text. It is widely useful for videos, podcasts, education, livestreams, and other productions when the required credit is included.
How to download and credit a track:
- Browse by genre, mood, tempo, or instrumentation.
- Open the individual track page.
- Click Download.
- Copy the attribution text supplied on that page.
- Place the credit where viewers or listeners can reasonably find it.
- Keep the original track page and license with your project files.
A typical attribution may look like this, but use the exact title and license shown on the individual page:
Title Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Incompetech’s FAQ says the free Creative Commons route can be used in monetized YouTube videos, streaming sites, and live productions when the creator is credited. A separate paid license may be available when attribution is impractical.
Best for: Instrumental background music, podcasts, education, livestreams, and video projects.
Verdict: Excellent when you want a straightforward free license and are willing to provide attribution.
Creative Commons licenses in plain English
Creative Commons is not one permission. It is a family of licenses. Find the complete license on the individual track page and interpret its symbols before using the file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Mark | Meaning | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| BY | Attribution | You must credit the creator, identify the source, and link to the license where practical. |
| SA | ShareAlike | Adaptations must be distributed under the same or a compatible license. |
| NC | NonCommercial | Commercial use is not allowed. Do not assume a monetized, sponsored, client, or advertising project qualifies. |
| ND | NoDerivatives | You may not distribute adapted versions. Synchronizing, editing, or remixing may create a problem, so obtain permission before using it in a project. |
| CC0 | Public-domain dedication tool | Copying, modifying, distributing, and commercial use are intended to be allowed without copyright-based conditions to the extent legally possible. |
Creative Commons explains that CC BY and CC BY-SA permit commercial reuse with attribution, while CC BY-NC prohibits commercial use and CC BY-ND prohibits distributing adaptations. CC0 is intended to remove copyright conditions, but other rights—such as privacy, publicity, trademark, or rights in a separate recording—can still matter.
A useful attribution includes the title, creator, source URL, and license. If the track page provides copy-ready credit, use that wording rather than inventing a shorter credit.
How to verify a track in 30 seconds
- Identify the source. Confirm the artist, uploader, label, or library offering the file.
- Find the exact license. A site-wide statement may not apply to every track.
- Match the license to your project. Check commercial use, synchronization with video or podcasts, editing and remixing, redistribution, games and apps, broadcast, public performance, and physical distribution.
- Check attribution. Determine whether credit is required and where it must appear.
- Look for extra conditions. These may include Content ID instructions, an attribution template, platform restrictions, or a requirement to purchase a separate commercial license.
- Download through the official control. Do not replace an absent download button with a stream-ripping converter.
- Preserve evidence. Save the file, track URL, artist name, license URL, download date, attribution text, and a screenshot or PDF of the relevant rights information.
Save proof at the time of download. Catalog pages can change, tracks can disappear, and licenses can be difficult to locate later. Keeping the permission you relied on is especially valuable for monetized videos, client work, podcasts, and projects that may remain online for years.
Personal listening versus reuse: the right shortlist
If you want a real music file for your own library
Prioritize actual file downloads, artist authorization, DRM-free portability, available formats, catalog variety, and the ability to support the artist. Bandcamp is the strongest choice for high-quality indie downloads. Free Music Archive and Jamendo Music are useful for broader discovery. SoundCloud works when the uploader has enabled Download file. Internet Archive is particularly useful for historical and unusual recordings.
If you are making a YouTube or social video
Prioritize explicit synchronization permission, commercial-use permission if the channel is monetized, clear attribution rules, Content ID guidance, and a way to preserve proof. Use YouTube Audio Library first for YouTube. For broader online uses, examine Mixkit, Pixabay Music, Incompetech, and Creative Commons tracks from FMA or ccMixter. A track that is legal to download for listening may still be unsuitable for a video.
If you are producing a podcast
Confirm permission to synchronize the music with spoken audio, use it repeatedly in an intro or outro, distribute episodes through a feed, and monetize or sponsor the show. Incompetech, ccMixter, FMA, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, and selected Jamendo tracks can work when the exact license covers those uses.
If you are making a game, app, broadcast, or physical release
Require an explicit license for interactive use, redistribution inside an app or game, broadcast, public performance, physical copies, paid downloads, and distribution to customers. Do not infer those rights from a free MP3 download. Mixkit’s exclusions and Jamendo’s separate categories for games, apps, broadcast, and physical distribution demonstrate why this check matters.
Common mistakes to avoid
A download button means I can use the song anywhere
No. The button may authorize only personal possession or listening. This distinction is especially important on Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Jamendo Music, and other artist platforms.
Royalty-free means copyright-free
No. Royalty-free usually describes how payment works after a license is obtained. The creator can retain copyright, and the license can restrict platforms, project types, attribution, redistribution, or commercial use. Jamendo also explains that royalty-free music is not necessarily free of charge.
Creative Commons always allows commercial use
No. Any Creative Commons license containing NC prohibits commercial use. ND restricts adapted versions, and SA adds downstream licensing requirements.
Giving credit makes any use legal
No. Credit satisfies an attribution condition when attribution is required, but it does not override a noncommercial, no-derivatives, synchronization, or redistribution restriction. YouTube says credit alone is not a sufficient reason to dispute a copyright claim.
A public-domain composition means the recording is public domain
No. A classical composition may be public domain while a modern orchestra’s recording remains protected. Check the rights for the specific sound recording, especially on Musopen and Internet Archive.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
A legal track cannot trigger Content ID
Not necessarily. Automated systems can make mistaken or conflicting claims. If you have the necessary rights, YouTube says that can be a valid reason to dispute a claim; merely owning a copy or giving credit is not enough. Keep your license evidence and attribution records.
Offline listening means I own an MP3
No. A subscription app may save an encrypted, app-controlled copy that cannot be exported, transferred, edited, or used in another program. Only a file such as MP3, FLAC, WAV, or OGG that you can save and open outside the service is a conventional audio-file download.
Older listicles are still reliable
Not always. NoiseTrade appears in many older free-music lists, but public references indicate that its downloads were discontinued and the service is not a current recommendation. Generic MP3 mirrors and stream-ripping services should also be avoided when they do not identify the rights holder or license.
What not to use
Avoid generic “free MP3” sites that promise current chart albums without identifying a copyright holder or license. Other warning signs include multiple fake download buttons, pop-up redirects, browser-extension or codec installers, hidden ownership information, and claims that a converter can extract audio from any streaming service.
The safest rule is simple: use the download control supplied by the rights holder or the platform, and do not use a converter to bypass a stream-only presentation. If a site offers new commercial music for free but cannot explain who authorized the file, leave it.
Bottom line
For personal listening, begin with Bandcamp, Free Music Archive, Jamendo Music, SoundCloud’s official download button, or Internet Archive Audio. For music to reuse, begin with YouTube Audio Library, Mixkit, Pixabay Music, Incompetech, ccMixter, or a Creative Commons track whose exact FMA or Jamendo license fits the project.
Before publishing anything, verify the individual license, confirm that it covers your medium and commercial status, provide the required credit, and save proof of the permission. That is the difference between downloading a free file and using free music legally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are free music downloads legal?
They can be. A legal download is authorized by the copyright holder, offered under Creative Commons or CC0, identified as public domain, or covered by a platform or production-music license. Legality applies to the specific file and terms, not automatically to everything hosted by a site.
Can I download music from SoundCloud?
Only when the uploader enables SoundCloud’s official Download file control. SoundCloud says direct track downloads are available on the web, not directly from mobile devices. If the button is absent, treat the track as stream-only and do not use a third-party converter.
Is free Bandcamp music free to use in YouTube videos?
Not automatically. A free or name-your-price Bandcamp download generally authorizes obtaining the file for listening. You need separate permission or a license that covers synchronization, monetization, attribution, and any other intended use in a YouTube video.
Is Creative Commons music always free for commercial use?
No. CC BY and CC BY-SA permit commercial reuse with attribution, but CC BY-NC prohibits commercial use. CC BY-ND also restricts distributing adapted versions. Always read the exact license attached to the track.
Does public domain cover the recording?
Not necessarily. Copyright can apply separately to the composition and the sound recording. An old composition may be public domain while a modern performance of it remains protected. Check the rights statement for the specific recording.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I monetize a video that uses free music?
Only if the individual license permits commercial use and synchronization with video. YouTube Audio Library is designed for YouTube use under its stated terms; other sources require track-specific checking. Monetization, sponsorship, client work, and advertising can all affect whether a license qualifies as commercial use.
Do I need to credit the artist?
It depends on the license. CC BY and other attribution licenses require credit. CC0 does not require copyright attribution, although credit is courteous. Mixkit says attribution is appreciated but not required for its free music, while Incompetech’s free Creative Commons route requires the supplied Kevin MacLeod attribution. YouTube Audio Library identifies tracks that require attribution.
What should I do if YouTube issues a Content ID claim?
Check the claim details, gather the track URL, license, download date, attribution, and any certificate or permission, then dispute the claim only when you actually have the necessary rights. Credit alone or simply owning a copy is not sufficient. Automated claims can still occur even when your license is valid.
Is offline listening the same as downloading an MP3?
No. Offline listening usually stores an app-controlled or encrypted copy that cannot be exported. A real file download is an MP3, FLAC, WAV, OGG, or similar file saved to your device and usable outside the service.

Bandcamp is the clearest recommendation because its supported download formats include FLAC, although availability depends on the individual release. Internet Archive items may also offer FLAC, but rights and formats vary by item.
Which site is best for podcasts?
Incompetech, ccMixter, Free Music Archive, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, and appropriately licensed Jamendo tracks are useful starting points. Confirm that the license permits synchronization with podcast audio, repeated intro or outro use, monetization, sponsorship, and feed distribution.
Which site is safest for YouTube?
YouTube Audio Library is the lowest-friction choice because it is integrated into YouTube Studio and provides attribution information. Pixabay, Mixkit, Incompetech, and suitable Creative Commons tracks can also work, but no external library can guarantee that automated systems will never make a claim.

Commercial use is available for some tracks on FMA, some Creative Commons licenses such as CC BY, YouTube Audio Library tracks under its terms, Pixabay Music, Mixkit for the uses listed in its license, and Incompetech with the required attribution. Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and Jamendo Music downloads should not be assumed to permit commercial reuse without separate permission or licensing.
What free music sites should I avoid?
Avoid generic MP3 mirrors, stream-ripping converters, sites with fake download buttons or forced installers, and pages offering current chart music without rights information. Do not rely on old listicles that recommend NoiseTrade as a current download service.
The Bottom Line
Download from the official source, then verify the license for the exact project. Bandcamp and artist-enabled SoundCloud downloads are strong for personal listening. FMA, Jamendo, ccMixter, and Internet Archive are useful when you can inspect item-level rights. YouTube Audio Library, Mixkit, Pixabay Music, and Incompetech are more practical for creator projects—but each has its own conditions and exclusions.
