Bandcamp is the best overall choice for supporting independent artists, while Qobuz is the strongest option for permanent lossless and Hi-Res downloads. Jamendo Music and Free Music Archive are better suited to free, license-labeled music, and SoundCloud works when a creator has enabled an official download.
That distinction matters: a permanent download gives you an audio file that you can keep and play on compatible devices. An offline-streaming feature usually stores access inside an app and remains tied to a subscription and the service’s rights. This list focuses on services that provide purchased files or an official download button—not stream-ripping sites or unauthorized MP3 catalogs.
What makes a music-download site legal?

1. Bandcamp: best for supporting independent artists
Bandcamp is the best first stop if you want to buy music directly from an artist or label. Artist and label pages can offer digital tracks and albums for purchase, with some releases also available as free or “name your price” downloads.
Bandcamp supports an unusually broad range of download formats. Depending on the release, buyers may be offered MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, or AIFF. How to use it
- Find the artist, label, or release page.
- Confirm that it is a digital release and review the price and available formats.
- Complete the purchase, or use the permitted free-download option when one is offered.

2. Qobuz: best for permanent lossless and Hi-Res downloads
Qobuz is the clearest choice for listeners who want a conventional download store with CD-quality or Hi-Res music. In addition to streaming, Qobuz operates a download store where customers can buy albums and download the resulting audio files to a device. Its U.S. service says a subscription is not required to purchase downloads, although some subscriptions may offer download discounts.
Quality is release-specific. One album may be available in lossless CD quality, while another may offer a higher-resolution version—or only a compressed option. Check the quality label on the individual album page before paying rather than assuming that every Qobuz title is Hi-Res.
Best for: audiophiles, classical and jazz listeners, specialist catalogs, and anyone building a permanent FLAC or Hi-Res library.
Watch out: Qobuz availability, catalog, pricing, and formats vary by country. The linked service is the U.S. storefront; do not assume that its catalog or purchase availability applies worldwide. A purchased download is different from offline listening through a streaming subscription. Visit Qobuz’s U.S. service to check availability for your location and the particular release.
3. Jamendo Music: best for independent and Creative Commons-oriented downloads
Jamendo Music is useful for discovering independent tracks that are offered under stated permissions. It is particularly relevant when you need music outside the major-label catalog or want to investigate music for a creative project.
Jamendo has two related but different services:
- Jamendo Music: the discovery and music-download platform, where tracks may be available under Creative Commons-style terms.
- Jamendo Licensing: a separate service for obtaining rights for uses such as online videos, podcasts, social media, advertising, films, and business projects.
Do not treat a free Jamendo Music download as a blanket commercial-use license. For a YouTube video, podcast, advertisement, business presentation, or other public project, inspect the track’s permission terms and obtain the appropriate license when required. Jamendo explains the distinction between free music and paid licensing on its licensing site; its documentation also describes individual licenses for online and small-scale commercial uses.

Watch out: “Royalty-free” does not necessarily mean free of charge or free of restrictions. The license determines where and how you may use the music.
4. Free Music Archive: best for free downloads with visible license conditions
Free Music Archive (FMA) is a good research starting point when you want free, curated music and can work within track-specific license requirements. Its catalog includes original songs and other audio, with individual tracks carrying different permissions.
Depending on the track, a license may involve attribution, noncommercial use, no derivatives, ShareAlike obligations, or public-domain-style permissions. Those details are not interchangeable:
- Attribution requirements may require you to credit the creator in a particular way.
- Noncommercial (NC) restrictions can make a track unsuitable for monetized videos, advertisements, or business use.
- NoDerivatives (ND) restrictions can prevent edits, remixes, or other adapted versions.
- ShareAlike (SA) terms can impose conditions on adapted works.
Read the individual track page and license before downloading for a project. FMA’s official FAQ explains the general license categories, but it is not individualized legal advice. If a planned use is ambiguous, ask the rights holder or choose a track with clearer permissions.
Best for: educators, podcasters, video creators, independent listeners, and anyone looking beyond mainstream catalogs.
Watch out: “Free download” describes the cost or access method—not unrestricted copyright permission.
5. SoundCloud: best when the creator enables an official download
SoundCloud is a legal download source only for tracks whose uploader has enabled the download button. This makes it useful for creator-provided downloads, demos, independent releases, and some permitted edits, but not a universal MP3 store.
On the web, signed-in users can download an individual track when the uploader has made that option available. SoundCloud says the download is a copy of the original file format uploaded by the creator. Playlists cannot be downloaded as a whole through this feature. The exact controls and availability can change, so check SoundCloud’s download instructions.
If there is no Download button
Do not use a third-party stream-ripping site, browser tool, or downloader to bypass the creator’s choice. The absence of the button means that an official file download has not been enabled. SoundCloud separately offers subscription-based offline listening, but that saves access inside the service; it is not the same as receiving a permanent audio file.
