My Initial Thoughts

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Review: My Initial Thoughts

Razer released the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition in 2020. The laptop is designed as an improvement of the Razer Blade 15 Advance Edition.

Razer is well known for designing premium laptops. This is evident in the Razer Blade 15 series.

Moreover, Razer designed Blade 15 Studio as a notebook workstation for graphic professionals. Video editors, 3D animators, and architects may find this laptop a great fit.

As a matter of fact, the laptop can be regarded as one of the most powerful laptops today. This means that it delivers enough power as desktop PCs but in a compact form factor.

However, with great power comes a great price. Hence, at the time this review was published, the Razer Blade Studio costs around $4,599.

This huge price tag is enough reason to throw some people off. However, before you write the laptop off because of this price tag, why not get to know what it has to offer!

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Design, Dimension & Weight Review

The Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition features a mercury-white finish. Also, like its predecessor, it has a gorgeous aluminum design.

Once again, the design proves that Razer knows how to make attractive laptops.

On the lid you will find the distinct Razer’s logo in silver and white. This simple design is both aesthetic and professional.

Opening the lid, you will be greeted by its classic 15-inch display. This display has slim bezels around it just like its predecessor.

Moreover, the Razer Blade Studio features a 4K OLED touchscreen. The screen has a resolution of 3840 x 2160.

With its OLED screen, the Razer Blade Studio has one of the best laptop displays you can get.

Speaking of the OLED screen, it offers super-saturated color and ultra-high brightness. It also delivers a superb contrast ratio.

In comparison, this display beats even the Retina display of the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro.

Moving the eyes towards the laptop’s deck, you will be tantalized by its gorgeous backlit keyboard. The backlit keyboard is centered between two speakers.

The keyboard also features an RGB backlighting system. Additionally, the backlighting system allows users to customize each key’s pattern.

You can also per-key backlight customization via the Synapse software.

The keys are large enough but with shallow key travel. Unfortunately, the shallow key travel makes typing quite a difficult task.

On the keyboard, there is a fingerprint sensor by the right. This sensor allows users to log into Windows 10 securely.

Below the laptop’s keyboard, you will find the large buttonless touchpad. The touchpad has a smooth glass surface that makes it easy for fingers to glide on.

Moving on, the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition has a decent selection of ports. This is one of its similarities with its predecessor.

On the left you’ll find the power jack, two type-A ports and one type-C port. Additionally, you will find a display port as well as the headphone and microphone jack.

Furthermore, on the right, you will find a Thunderbolt 3 port and another type-A port. You will also get an HDMI as well as a Kensington security slot.

Still on the right side of the laptop, you will find an SD card slot. This is a new feature of the Razer Blade Studio Edition – its predecessor does not feature an SD card reader.

Moving on to the dimensions and weight, the laptop has a dimension of 355 x 235 x 17.8 mm and weighs 2200g.

This dimension and weight results in a thin laptop. This is impressive despite the laptop’s hardware.

In comparison, the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition is lighter than the Lenovo Thinkpad P53. The Lenovo has a dimension of 377 x 252 x 24 mm and weighs 2449g.

In conclusion, I would rate the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition an eight. This is due to its simple but aesthetic design.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Processor (CPU) Performance Review

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Processor (CPU) Performance Review

Razer equipped the Razer Blade Studio Edition with an 8-core Intel Core i7-10875H processor. The processor has a 16 Mb cache, a base frequency of 2.30GHz, and a boost frequency of 5.10GHz.

To test the processor performance of the laptop, I ran a video rendering test.

I carried out the test by rendering a 12-minute video from 4K resolution to 1080p resolution. Meanwhile, I used a stopwatch to record the time taken to render the video.

In reference to the test, the Razer Blade Studio and the Lenovo Thinkpad were a tie. They both completed the video rendering in 10 minutes.

On the other hand, the Dell Precision 3540 completed the same task in 19 minutes.

To further test for the CPU performance, I also performed a CineBench test. Based on the test result, the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition scored 1053 points.

Consequently, the performance of Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition surpassed that of Dell Precision 3540, which scored 680 points. On the other hand, Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition was a little behind Lenovo Thinkpad lP53, with 1076 points.

Overall, the Razer Blade offers a sufficient amount of performance. However, its performance is not the best among its competitors.

Therefore, I will rate it a seven in this respect.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Memory (RAM) Performance Review

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Storage Options & Performance Review

The laptop comes with 32GB DDR4 RAM with its two RAM slots occupied. Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade the RAM beyond 32GB as that is the maximum it can take.

Thankfully, with the whooping 32GB RAM, you get a laptop that’s extremely proficient at multitasking.

To test the laptop’s multitasking capabilities, I opened 35 browser tabs. In this test, I had several of these tabs streaming YouTube videos.

In addition to that, one of the tabs was transcoding a 1080p resolution video.

Based on the multitasking test, the laptop did not stutter at all. Its performance is impressive considering the extensive tasks running at the same time.

Furthermore, I performed a PCMark 10 test. In this test, Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition scored 5315 points.

Comparatively, this score trailed the Lenovo Thinkpad, with 6359 points. However, the Razer Blade Studio performed better than the Dell Precision – which scored 4671 points.

Overall, the laptop’s performance is impressive. However, it still does not come first in performance charts among its competitors.

Therefore, I will rate it a seven.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Storage Options & Performance Review

Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Specs

Razer equipped the Razer Blade Studio Edition with a fast 1 TB SSD storage.

The SSD offers enough storage space for large files. Most importantly, with the SSD Windows 10 boots up in few seconds.

Moreover, Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition also supports an SD card reader. This is a new feature in the Blade Studio Edition, as its predecessor did not feature an SD card reader.

In order to determine the performance of its SDCard reader, I performed an SDCardreader transfer speed test.

Based on the outcome of this test, the laptop recorded a speed of 78.3 Mbps. Unfortunately, the 78.3 Mbps speed is way behind the category average speed of 144 Mbps.

Most importantly, to determine the performance of the laptop’s SSD storage, I performed a CrystalDiskMark test.

Based on the test result, the laptop recorded a sequential write speed of 2214 Mbps. Additionally, it also recorded a sequential read speed of 2018 Mbps.

Comparatively, this performance surpasses the Lenovo Thinkpad P53. The Lenovo recorded a sequential write speed of 1402 Mbps and a sequential read speed of 1503 Mbps.

Therefore, as a result of its fast storage speed, I will rate Razer Blade Studio Edition a nine.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Graphics Card Performance Review

Razer equipped the Razer Studio with a NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 graphics card.

This GPU has a 16GB GDDR6 VRAM, a base frequency of 1630 MHz, and a boost frequency of 2815 MHz.

To determine the GPU’s performance, I performed a 3DMark graphics test. Based on the test result, the Razer scored 16,566 points.

This result recorded is surprising as it surpassed the Lenovo Thinkpad P53. The Lenovo scored 16,142 points.

The above benchmark is for gaming laptops and the Razer Blade 15 Studio edition performed excellently. However, the Razer Blade 15 Studio edition is targeted mostly at creative design.

Therefore, I expect Razer Blade 15 Studio edition to handle the editing of 4K and 5K resolution videos.

To determine its video rendering capability, I used the Cinebench R15’s OpenGL test. This test uses an application programming interface (API) to challenge a GPU’s rendering capabilities.

Based on the test result, the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition recorded 196 fps. This result significantly trailed the Lenovo Thinkpad P53 that recorded 266 fps.

In conclusion, I will rate the Razer’s GPU performance a seven in this review.

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Battery life & Performance Review

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition Battery life & Performance Review

Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition comes with an 80 Wh battery. The battery is expected to deliver 6 hrs of battery life under standard operations.

To determine the battery performance, I performed a battery run-down test.

To complete the battery rundown test, I played a video at 50 percent screen brightness and set the audio volume at 100 percent. Additionally, to conserve more power, I turned off Wi-Fi and disabled keyboard backlighting.

Based on this test, Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition lasted 8 hours 14 minutes. This result is longer than the Lenovo Thinkpad P53 that lasted for 5 hours 56 minutes.

However, I expect the battery life to be shorter when performing more power-consuming tasks. Therefore, I cannot guarantee an entire workday without needing to recharge the laptop.

In conclusion, the battery performance is quite impressive despite the laptop’s powerful hardware.

Moreover, its battery performance is better than most of its competitions, with the exception of the 16-inch Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro still tops the chart with its incredible battery performance.

All these considered I will rate the Razer Blade Studio Edition a seven. This is a result of its above-average battery performance.
