For PS5-first gaming, the PlayStation Portal is the best fit. It is Sony’s official, low-setup streaming device, with DualSense-style controls built in. If you already own a Steam Deck or ROG Ally, though, you can stream from your PS5 without buying a Portal: use Chiaki-ng, a free unofficial client. A Deck or Ally is the better purchase only if you also want its own PC game library. None of these devices can play PS5 games offline, and the stream from your console tops out at 1080p and 60fps.

Prices are US snapshots. The ROG Ally name also covers older models, including the 2023 ROG Ally and 2024 ROG Ally X; their current US prices are not established here, so they are not treated as interchangeable with the 2025 Xbox-branded models.

What is the difference between Remote Play and cloud streaming?

Remote Play streams a game running on your own PS5. Cloud streaming runs an eligible game on Sony’s servers instead, so your home console can be off or in use by another account. The distinction determines whether you need a PS5, which games you can access and which handheld software works.

Remote Play: your PS5 runs the game

Your console encodes the game and sends the video and audio to the handheld. The PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode with network wake enabled, and the game needs to be installed on that console. Your home network’s upload, the handheld’s Wi-Fi connection and, when playing away from home, network routing all affect the session. Remote Play is the route to your own compatible installed console library.

Cloud streaming: Sony’s servers run the game

PlayStation Plus Premium is required for Sony’s cloud game catalog. Sony says Portal cloud streaming can continue when the PS5 is off or being used by another account, but it covers select PS5 games from the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and eligible digital PS5 games in Your Library—not every game you own. Sony’s Portal cloud information says PS4 and PS3 games are not currently available to stream on the Portal.

These are separate paths, not two names for the same feature. Portal supports both Remote Play and Sony’s official handheld cloud streaming. A Deck can use Chiaki-ng for Remote Play; its cloud option depends on the unofficial Asobi SteamOS/Linux playtest. Stock Windows Ally models can use Remote Play clients, but the August 2026 reporting cited here did not show an Asobi Windows release.

Which handheld is best for PS5 gaming?

The Portal is the clearest choice if playing PS5 games is the main reason you want a handheld. For owners of a Deck or Ally, using the device already in hand is usually the better-value decision; a Portal adds convenience and controller fidelity, not a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate PS5 stream.

Choose the Portal for the least setup and best built-in DualSense support

The Portal is a dedicated streaming client rather than a console. It does not install or render PS5 games locally: it receives a stream from a paired PS5, or from Sony’s cloud service for eligible Premium titles. Sony’s product page specifies an 8-inch 1080p LCD and gameplay up to 60fps. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are built into the device, and work in games that support those features.

That combination matters when you want the PlayStation control experience without carrying or pairing a separate controller. Sony describes the Portal as a handheld gateway to PS5 games; it is designed to connect to a PS5 and does not offer a Steam or Windows game library. Its US recommended retail price became $249.99 on April 2, 2026. PlayStation Direct showed $249.00 when checked October 29, 2026, a one-dollar difference between the stated retail price and that listing.

Keep a Steam Deck if you already own one

A Steam Deck is a handheld Linux PC. It runs compatible Steam games locally through SteamOS and Proton, including offline games that have been installed and configured for offline use. For PS5 games, the practical Remote Play client is Chiaki-ng; it is free, open source and not endorsed or certified by Sony. It cannot access Sony’s Premium cloud catalog. The unofficial Asobi app was in a SteamOS/Linux playtest in August 2026 and adds cloud streaming, but remains a less established route.

If PS5 streaming is an occasional extra, installing a client on an existing Deck avoids paying for another screen and set of controls. If you do not own a Deck, buying the current OLED model just to stream a PS5 is difficult to justify: Valve’s new US prices reported after its May 2026 increase were $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB. A Portal costs substantially less for the PlayStation-only task.

Keep an ROG Ally if you already own one, or want Windows games too

The Ally family is a set of Windows handheld PCs, not a single 2026 configuration. On an Ally, PS5 Remote Play works through Chiaki-ng or Sony’s official Windows app. Chiaki-ng can map the built-in controls; Sony’s app is the supported client but is designed around a connected DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 controller rather than the Ally’s Xbox-style controls.

The current US list prices in the cited ASUS Store snapshot were $599.99 for the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Those devices also run Windows games and can access PC storefronts and services. That flexibility can make them sensible for someone who wants PC handheld gaming and treats PS5 streaming as a bonus. It does not improve the PS5 stream beyond the same console-side 1080p/60fps ceiling.

Do not confuse the current Ally models with older ROG Ally devices

The original 2023 ROG Ally line has a 7-inch 1920×1080 120Hz screen and was sold with Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme configurations; launch pricing often cited for it was $699.99. ASUS’s current US pages emphasize the Xbox-branded 2025 Ally models, and a current original-Ally MSRP was not confirmed in the available October 2026 price snapshot. The 2024 ROG Ally X is also a distinct machine. Compare the exact model and configuration rather than assuming any listing labeled “ROG Ally” has the same screen, processor, battery or price.

Can you use PS Remote Play on a Steam Deck?

Yes. The practical route is Chiaki-ng, a third-party client, because Sony has not released an official Remote Play app for SteamOS. Setup takes more work than using a Portal, but it lets a Deck stream from a PS5 over the home network or the internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up Chiaki-ng on Steam Deck

  1. Prepare the PS5. On the console, open Settings → System → Remote Play and enable Remote Play. Then open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network. The names and menu location can shift with system software updates.
  2. Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam menu, choose Power, then Switch to Desktop. Launch Discover and search for Chiaki-ng. Late-September 2026 guides still commonly listed the Flathub package as Chiaki4deck, with the app ID io.github.streetpea.Chiaki4deck; the project’s current name is Chiaki-ng.
  3. Install and open the client. Install the available Flathub package, then launch it from Desktop Mode. The client and its distribution are not official Sony software. The Chiaki-ng README states: “This project is not endorsed or certified by Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC.”
  4. Register the console. Follow Chiaki-ng’s pairing flow, select the PS5 and enter the Link Device PIN shown on the console under Settings → System → Remote Play → Link Device. The Deck and PS5 need to be on a network that can reach one another for local pairing.
  5. Connect and check the controls. Start the PS5 session from Chiaki-ng and confirm that the face buttons, shoulder buttons and menus behave as expected. If you want access to the DualSense touchpad, add Chiaki-ng as a non-Steam game and select a community Steam Input layout that maps a trackpad to touchpad actions.
  6. Use it from Gaming Mode. Return to Gaming Mode and launch the added non-Steam app. Test the connection at home before relying on it away from home; remote access can involve router, firewall or NAT configuration beyond the basic pairing step.

Chiaki-ng handles local and internet Remote Play, but it does not provide PS Plus Premium cloud streaming. As with other clients, it receives the PS5’s encoded stream rather than running the game on the Deck.

What Asobi adds—and what it does not establish

Asobi: Remote Play, from Inside Internet, was in a SteamOS/Linux playtest in August 2026. Its distinguishing feature is access to PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming on a Deck, which Chiaki-ng cannot provide. During the playtest, Premium features were unlocked; the planned free tier was described as 1080p/30 SDR, and the planned Premium tier as 1080p/60 with HDR, gyro and haptics options. A paid price had not been announced, and those planned tiers should not be mistaken for settled commercial terms.

Asobi is unofficial and its availability or functionality may change. Held Games’ August 12, 2026 report described it as the route for Premium subscribers who want that library on a Deck. A Windows version had been announced but had not shipped as of that report, so it should not be presented as an available option on a standard Windows Ally.

Can an ROG Ally replace a PlayStation Portal?

It can replace the Portal as a screen for PS5 Remote Play, but it is not a like-for-like substitute. An Ally offers built-in controls through Chiaki-ng and a Windows PC library; the Portal offers an official Sony client and DualSense features without the same software setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose between Sony’s PC app and Chiaki-ng

Sony’s official PS Remote Play app for Windows is the supported path. Sony documents using a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 connected to the computer. Because an Ally’s built-in controls follow an Xbox-style layout, the official app is less straightforward if you do not want to carry a separate controller.

Chiaki-ng’s Windows build is the common alternative when you want to use Ally controls. It is unofficial, so updates or compatibility changes can affect it, and control mapping may require adjustment. Check the face buttons, Options/Create inputs and any touchpad or gyro behavior you need for the games you play. Do not assume that mapping the Ally’s sticks and buttons reproduces Portal-level adaptive triggers or haptics.

What a 120Hz Ally screen changes—and what it does not

The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X have 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screens, while the Portal has an 8-inch 1080p display rated for up to 60fps. A faster panel can matter for games rendered locally on the Ally, but it does not make the PS5 send a 120fps Remote Play stream. The console encoder is the limiting side of this comparison: the 2026 guides cited here put the shared Remote Play ceiling for Portal, Chiaki-ng and Sony’s app at 1080p/60fps.

Screen size and panel technology are separate considerations. The Deck OLED has a smaller 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED panel, while Portal’s screen is larger and 1080p. Those specifications describe the display, not a guarantee that a streamed PS5 game will look sharper or feel more responsive on one device; Wi-Fi quality and stream conditions matter more than the handheld’s maximum refresh rate.

Do you need a PS5 to use a PlayStation Portal?

You need a PS5 for Portal Remote Play, but not necessarily for every Portal session. With PlayStation Plus Premium, the Portal can stream select supported PS5 cloud games directly from Sony’s servers, even when no home console is available or powered on. Without a PS5, you are limited to that supported cloud catalog rather than a console library.

For readers who want both Premium cloud titles and local PC games on one handheld, a Steam Deck with Asobi was a possible unofficial SteamOS route during the August 2026 playtest. That option is less established than Sony’s official Portal cloud feature. A Portal is the straightforward first-party choice for cloud-to-handheld PlayStation play; a Deck is more versatile as a PC but depends on third-party software for that use.

Do you need PlayStation Plus for Portal or Remote Play?

No subscription is required to use Remote Play from your own console. Sony’s Portal FAQ says PlayStation Portal Remote Player and PlayStation Remote Play do not require a PlayStation Plus membership. Cloud streaming is different: it requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited to eligible games and supported regions.

Multiplayer access is a separate question. Whether a game’s online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus depends on that game’s own rules; the fact that you are using Remote Play does not remove those requirements. Sony’s unsigned US membership page did not show a current dollar price in the October 2026 information available here, so treat any Premium price found elsewhere as a separately dated secondary figure rather than a confirmed live Store price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does each option cost if you are starting from scratch?

The Portal has the lowest listed device price, but it is only useful for PS5 gaming if you have a PS5 or plan to use Premium cloud streaming. A PC handheld costs more because it is also a handheld computer. For a new buyer, compare the total setup—not just the handheld—to the games and services you actually intend to use.

Prices are US figures checked against the dated sources available through October 2026; they can change. Valve’s OLED increases were reported by The Verge on May 27, 2026, quoting Valve’s hardware announcement. At that announcement, Valve attributed the increases to “rising memory and storage costs” and described broader component and logistics pressures. The refurbished Deck prices are the prices reported at that time, not a guarantee of current stock.

A Portal plus a new PS5 Digital Edition totals about $850 at Sony’s stated prices before games or any subscription. A new PS5 is not required if a buyer already has one, and Premium is not required for Remote Play. Conversely, an Ally or Deck price buys a PC handheld as well as a possible PS5 screen; a Portal’s lower price does not make it a substitute for the PC library.

How important are Wi-Fi, latency and battery life?

Network quality can make a bigger difference to a streamed session than the handheld model. Sony’s published Remote Play guidance sets a 5Mbps broadband Wi-Fi minimum and recommends at least 15Mbps for a better experience. Those are Sony’s thresholds, not a promise of stable latency: Sony also notes that results can vary with the network environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the rate for the mode you are using

For Portal cloud streaming, Sony’s cloud guidance lists a minimum of 5Mbps upload and download to establish a session, with Portal-specific figures of 7Mbps for 720p and 13Mbps for 1080p. Those figures apply to Portal cloud streaming; do not confuse the 13Mbps cloud figure with Sony’s 15Mbps Remote Play recommendation.

Sony’s cloud page separately gives console-side cloud rates of 13Mbps for 720p, 23Mbps for 1080p, 38Mbps for 1440p and 52Mbps for 2160p. Those resolution tiers are not the Portal’s resolution options. For the Portal, the relevant cloud target is its specific 1080p figure, while Remote Play guidance uses the separate minimum and recommended rates above.

Reduce avoidable network problems

  • Where practical, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet and connect the handheld to a strong 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi network. These are practical setup recommendations from 2026 Remote Play guides, not laboratory findings.
  • Test a local session before depending on Remote Play away from home. A working connection on the home network does not guarantee that a hotel or mobile network can reach the PS5.
  • For away-from-home play, check router, firewall and NAT conditions if the console does not appear or the session fails to connect. Network routing is a separate issue from whether the client app is installed correctly.
  • Close other high-bandwidth activity on a congested network where possible. A fast internet plan cannot by itself eliminate Wi-Fi interference or unstable latency.

Streaming also consumes battery: a handheld has to decode video while maintaining a Wi-Fi connection. The cited 2026 coverage flags that 1080p/60 streaming can drain a Deck or Ally faster than many local indie games, but there is no consistent, comparable battery test for the three devices here. Sony’s cited Portal pages do not publish battery capacity in watt-hours or an official runtime figure; independent runtime ranges conflict, so a specific Portal-hours estimate would be misleading. For context, Valve’s Deck OLED specification snapshot gives a 50Wh battery and an estimated 3–12 hours depending on workload, while ASUS lists 60Wh for the ROG Xbox Ally and 80Wh for the Ally X. Those capacities alone do not predict streaming runtime across different devices and settings.

What do you gain or lose in controls, offline play and game choice?

The key trade-off is purpose: Portal concentrates on the PlayStation stream, while Deck and Ally add local PC gaming. For controller fidelity, Portal has the simplest path to supported DualSense features; PC handhelds offer more control customization but may require a controller or mapping work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls and PlayStation features

  • Portal: DualSense-style grips, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are integrated. Sony specifies that haptics and adaptive triggers are available only when supported by the game being played.
  • Steam Deck: Chiaki-ng can use the built-in controls, and Steam Input community layouts can map the trackpads to touchpad actions. Full DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers typically require connecting a real DualSense controller.
  • ROG Ally: Chiaki-ng can map built-in controls, but touchpad, gyro and other special functions can depend on the client and configuration. Sony’s official Windows app is designed around a connected PlayStation controller, not a promise of Portal-equivalent Ally controls.

A connected DualSense can be a practical choice on either PC handheld if a particular game depends on PlayStation controller features. That adds another item to carry and removes some of the all-in-one convenience that makes Portal appealing.

Offline play

None of the three streams PS5 games without a network connection. Portal has no local game installation or rendering capability, and Remote Play needs a reachable PS5. A Steam Deck or Ally can still play compatible games installed locally when offline, subject to each PC game’s own launchers, DRM and offline support; that offline library is separate from the PS5.

Libraries and flexibility

Portal is for compatible PS5 Remote Play and, with Premium, select cloud PS5 titles. Steam Deck runs its Steam library through SteamOS and Proton, with compatibility varying by game. Ally models use Windows 11 and can run Windows PC games and services, including Xbox-related features ASUS markets for the Xbox-branded versions. Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play are Xbox services, not PlayStation substitutes.

Which one should you choose?

Make the decision based on what you own and whether PS5 play is the only job. The additional flexibility of a PC handheld is valuable only if you expect to use its PC library; for PS5-first play, it adds cost and setup without raising the stream ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You own a PS5 and want the simplest handheld setup: choose the Portal if you value the built-in DualSense controls and official Sony support more than a PC library.
  • You own a Steam Deck already: start with Chiaki-ng for console Remote Play. If you pay for Premium and want its cloud catalog on Deck, Asobi was the unofficial SteamOS/Linux playtest option reported in August 2026.
  • You own an Ally already: use Chiaki-ng for built-in controls, or Sony’s official app if you want the supported Windows client and are willing to use a PlayStation controller.
  • You do not own a PS5 but want PlayStation games on a handheld: Portal plus Premium cloud streaming is the official route for supported titles. A Deck plus Asobi may combine cloud access with a Steam library, but relies on unofficial software.
  • You want Steam games and PS5 streaming: choose a Deck for a SteamOS-centered handheld PC and use PS5 streaming as an added feature.
  • You want Windows PC gaming and PS5 streaming: consider an Ally-family device, choosing the exact model by its PC gaming hardware and price rather than expecting a better PS5 stream.
  • You need PS5 games on a plane or without Wi-Fi: none of these devices can do that. A Deck or Ally can play supported local PC games offline instead.

How we picked the best fit

This comparison ranks devices by suitability for PS5 gaming, not by PC gaming performance. The deciding factors are whether Sony officially supports the path, how much setup and ongoing software maintenance it takes, whether DualSense features are available, the cost of entry in the United States, access to cloud streaming without a home console, offline usefulness outside PS5 play, and the device’s screen and stream limits. Dated prices are treated as October 2026 snapshots, and vendor performance statements are identified as vendor claims rather than independent measurements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the PlayStation Portal connect to public Wi-Fi?

Yes. Sony says the Portal can connect to public networks. System software 3.0.1 or later supports some captive-portal networks with an extra validation step using a phone; initial setup still requires home Wi-Fi.

Can two PlayStation Portals connect to one PS5 at the same time?

No. PlayStation Direct says only one Portal can connect to a PS5 at a time. If another Portal is already connected, it must disconnect before the other takes over.

Can PlayStation Portal cloud streaming play PS4 or PS3 games?

Sony’s current Portal cloud-streaming information says the feature covers select PS5 games only. The broader presence of older titles in PlayStation catalogs does not mean those games can be streamed to Portal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
