The right choice depends on where your games already live. PlayStation Portal streams games from a PS5 or Sony’s cloud; it cannot run a game locally. Steam Deck OLED installs and runs Steam games on the device through SteamOS. ROG Xbox Ally models are Windows handheld PCs for Steam, Game Pass, Epic, GOG, Battle.net and anti-cheat games. In US list pricing checked in October 2026, Portal is about $250, the ROG Xbox Ally is $599.99, Steam Deck OLED starts at $789, and ROG Xbox Ally X is $999.99. Choose Portal only when you already own a PS5 and have reliable Wi-Fi; choose Deck for the simplest Steam experience and OLED screen; choose an Ally when Windows libraries, Game Pass or competitive anti-cheat titles matter more than SteamOS simplicity.

What is the fundamental difference between Portal, Deck and Ally?
These devices share a handheld shape but belong to different categories. Portal is a video terminal: the PS5 or Sony’s servers render the game, then send an interactive video stream to the screen. Steam Deck OLED and ROG Xbox Ally render games locally with an AMD processor and graphics cores, so they can keep playing when the network is unavailable after games are installed.
- Portal: no local game installation, game storage or offline mode. A PS5 must be available for ordinary Remote Play; cloud play with the console off requires PS Plus Premium.
- Steam Deck OLED: a Linux PC with SteamOS, a custom AMD Zen 2/RDNA 2 APU, 16GB RAM and NVMe storage. Proton translates many Windows games for local play.
- ROG Xbox Ally family: Windows 11 handhelds with AMD Zen/RDNA graphics. The Xbox full-screen interface makes Windows more controller-friendly, while the underlying OS supports PC launchers and anti-cheat software that SteamOS often cannot.
That architecture determines almost every later decision: library compatibility, travel reliability, latency, battery behavior and whether a subscription is mandatory.
Which games and services does each handheld support?
Match the device to the store account you already use. Buying the wrong ecosystem can leave an expensive handheld unable to access the games you paid for.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
PlayStation Portal: your PS5 library, streamed
With local Remote Play, Portal mirrors games installed on a PS5 over your home network. The console must be powered on or in a rest state that allows remote waking. Basic home Remote Play does not require PlayStation Plus. When the PS5 is unavailable, PS Plus Premium adds Sony cloud streaming for compatible games in Your Library, the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog; Sony’s catalog check in June 2026 put the combined streamable selection above 2,000 games.
Portal cannot launch Steam, Xbox, Nintendo or PC games. It also cannot cache a title for a flight or hotel with unusable Wi-Fi. Sony’s firmware 7.0.0 added a 1080p high-quality mode in March 2026, but that is still a stream rather than local rendering.
Steam Deck OLED: Steam first, with Linux trade-offs
Deck signs into your Steam account and runs installed games through SteamOS 3. Valve’s Verified badge means a title works well out of the box; the broader Playable category may need a control, keyboard or graphics adjustment. Different October 2026 counts illustrate the definitions: one tally listed roughly 21,694 Great on Deck or Verified games out of 117,881 Steam titles, while another counted more than 25,000 games as Verified or Playable in January 2026. ProtonDB community reports suggest close to 90 percent of the catalog is playable in some form, but that does not make every game equally convenient.
SteamOS Game Mode offers console-style sleep, resume and per-game performance limits. Desktop Mode is a KDE Plasma Linux desktop where users can add launchers such as Heroic or Lutris, install GOG games and use emulation tools. Those options require more setup than a Verified Steam download.
ROG Xbox Ally: the broad Windows PC library
Windows 11 lets the Ally family use Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, the Xbox app and PC Game Pass, along with multiplayer games whose kernel-level anti-cheat is not supported on SteamOS. Xbox Full Screen Experience is intended to hide much of the desktop friction. ASUS, as cited by Shattered.io, says the mode can free up to 2GB of memory and reduce idle power use by roughly two-thirds compared with the normal Windows shell; a TechPowerUp headline reported 9 percent less RAM use than standard Windows 11.
The trade-off is maintenance. Boiling Steam reported about an hour of mandatory updates and sign-ins before first play on an Ally X. Windows gives you the widest compatibility, but it still behaves like a PC: launcher updates, occasional restarts and overlapping control schemes are part of ownership. Game Pass is a recurring cost; its current US price was not stated in the available material, so check Xbox’s live listing before budgeting.
How much do they cost in the United States in October 2026?
Use current list prices rather than launch prices. Memory and storage costs pushed Deck prices sharply higher, while the Xbox Ally models retained their launch MSRPs.

| Product or plan | Current price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal | $249.99 | Current nationwide list price after a $50 increase on April 2, 2026; some pages still show the former $199.99. |
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB, new | $789 | Raised from $549 on May 27, 2026; Valve cited memory and storage costs. |
| Steam Deck OLED 1TB, new | $949 | Raised from $649; the increase was reported as 46 percent by BBC via Tech Insider. |
| Steam Deck OLED 512GB, Valve refurbished | $629 | One-year Valve warranty; stock trackers found no units in 31 Steam countries on Oct. 26, so availability is unpredictable. |
| Steam Deck OLED 1TB, Valve refurbished | $759 | Same thin-stock warning as the 512GB refurbished model. |
| ROG Xbox Ally 512GB | $599.99 | Ryzen Z2 A model; unchanged since its October 2025 launch. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X 1TB | $999.99 | Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme model; unchanged. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 1TB | $1,299.99 | Introduced Oct. 15, 2026; same processor as Ally X. |
| PS Plus Premium | $19.99/month, $54.99/quarter or $159.99/year | Required for Portal cloud streaming, not local Remote Play; price rose from $16.99/month in May 2026. |
The Portal figure has a documented conflict: Shattered.io’s Oct. 22 update still printed $199.99, while Tech Insider cited Sony’s PlayStation Blog price change and an Oct. 22 maker check at $249.99. Treat $249.99 as the current US list price and regard $199.99 as an older or retailer-specific listing.
In Europe, sourced prices were €249.99 for Portal, €779 for Deck OLED 512GB and €919 for Deck OLED 1TB after the Valve increase. The older 2023 ROG Ally Z1 Extreme still appears around €570 on sale in Germany, but it is not the current US Xbox Ally family.
How do performance and graphics compare?
Deck and Ally performance depends on wattage, resolution, game settings and the operating system. The figures below come from FPSVibe’s fitted model based on published reviews, not a single controlled laboratory run; its median held-out error was about 12 percent across a 210-game catalog.
| Handheld and mode | Typical game | Games at 30+ FPS (of 210) |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck, 15W | 34 FPS | 103 |
| ROG Xbox Ally, Turbo 20W | 34 FPS | 119 |
| Original ROG Ally, Turbo 25W | 48 FPS | 168 |
| Original ROG Ally X, Turbo 25W | 52 FPS | 173 |
| ROG Xbox Ally X, Turbo 25W | 59 FPS | 184 |
The original ROG Ally and Ally X rows are older Z1/Z1 Extreme generations, included to show the model’s naming history; the current US products are the Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X and X20. FPSVibe estimates that moving from 800p to 1080p cuts these results by roughly 25–30 percent.

| Counter-Strike 2 | 78 | 108 | 117 | 133 |
| Fortnite | Does not run on Steam Deck | 60 | 65 | 74 |
Other published runs use different scenes and power limits. Club386 recorded 61 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p on the Xbox Ally X’s 25W setting and 105–106 FPS in Forza Horizon 5 at 720p Low. Digital Trends found the OLED Deck and 2024 Ally X within about one frame in a 720p Cyberpunk scene, with the Ally’s advantage widening at 1080p and higher TDP. Notebookcheck reported Ally X Cyberpunk results from 15.5 FPS at 13W Silent to 28 FPS at 35W plugged-in Turbo at 1080p Ultra.
Windows and Linux can also change results. Boiling Steam reported about 48 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and 45 FPS in God of War on Windows Turbo on an Xbox Ally X, versus about 53 and 50 FPS with Bazzite in those titles; The Witcher 3 favored Windows at about 90 versus 58 FPS. A separate creator’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance II run at 17W measured 47 FPS on Windows 11 and 62 FPS on older Bazzite, while the 13W gap was only 35 versus 37 FPS. These are directional results from different software versions, not a universal Linux advantage.
Can Steam Deck run Fortnite, Valorant and other anti-cheat games?
For the major competitive games listed below, Steam Deck is the wrong choice. FPSVibe counted 29 of 210 games that did not start or could not be played online on SteamOS as of Oct. 17, 2026, including Fortnite, Valorant, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2 and EA Sports FC 26.

Valve’s compatibility criteria require working anti-cheat support for a Verified badge. Compatibility layers and community workarounds can change, but they are not a dependable purchase basis for a live-service account. The Windows-based Ally family runs these titles when the game’s own system requirements and anti-cheat policy permit it.
Which screen, battery and weight suit long sessions?
| Device | Display | Battery | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal | 8-inch LCD, 1920×1080, 60Hz | 4,300mAh / 16.6Wh; Sony has not published an official hour rating | About 528–529g |
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280×800, up to 90Hz, about 1,000-nit HDR peak | 50Wh; Valve says about 3–12 hours depending on game | About 640g |
| ROG Xbox Ally | 7-inch IPS, 1920×1080, 120Hz FreeSync Premium, 500 nits | 60Wh | 670g |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | 7-inch IPS, 1920×1080, 120Hz, 500 nits; Notebookcheck measured about 490 nits on one unit | 80Wh | 715g |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 | 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR OLED, 120Hz; ASUS Japan materials cite up to 1,400 nits peak | Not separately stated; same platform as Ally X | About 1.66lb (roughly 753g) |
Deck OLED is the contrast and HDR choice, while the Ally models offer a sharper 1080p target and 120Hz refresh. Portal is the largest panel here, but it is an LCD limited to streamed 60Hz output. The Ally X20 adds OLED and a larger panel without adding the faster processor that its price might suggest.
What do published battery results show?
Valve says OLED Deck gains 30–50 percent over the LCD model, charges from 20 to 80 percent in as little as 45 minutes and resumes about 30 percent faster. PCGamesN recorded 3 hours 26 minutes with a 60 FPS cap in one setup. IGN’s October 2026 rundown recorded 2 hours 34 minutes for Xbox Ally X in Cyberpunk 2077 and 2 hours 43 minutes for X20; Boiling Steam described more than two hours in demanding games.
Portal reports vary because network conditions and stream quality dominate. Coverage has quoted roughly 7–9 hours, 5–10 hours or about 4–6 hours in real-world streaming. It can outlast a Deck rendering a heavy 3D game despite its smaller cell, but no same-scene test establishes a single battery winner across all three categories.
How much latency does Portal add?
Digital Foundry and Eurogamer measured 60–80 milliseconds of additional input lag in a best-case local setup with the PS5 on Ethernet and Portal near the router. At 60 FPS, that is roughly four to five frames. Cloud streaming can add stutter, blur and more variable delay.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That makes Portal comfortable for slower single-player games, turn-based play and ordinary adventure sessions. Competitive shooters, fighting games and rhythm games expose the delay more readily. Deck and Ally have no streaming tax when a game is installed locally, although their frame rate and controller response still depend on settings.
What internet, console and subscription requirements apply?
Portal requirements
- For Remote Play, own a PS5, install or update the game there, enable remote features and use a stable Wi-Fi path to the home router.
- For cloud play with the console off, subscribe to PS Plus Premium; Essential and Extra do not add cloud streaming.
- Allow at least 5Mbps broadband for use. Sony recommends 15Mbps for a better experience; community measurements put standard 1080p around 15Mbps and high-quality 1080p as high as roughly 25Mbps.
- Use PlayStation Link audio or the 3.5mm jack. Standard Bluetooth earbuds do not pair in the same way as they do with Deck.
Remote Play is usually more forgiving than cloud play because the stream travels to your home router rather than across the public internet to Sony’s servers. Portal has no local fallback during a PSN, home-network or cloud outage; Tech Insider tracked six PSN incidents in a four-month stretch in 2026.

Deck and Ally requirements
- Sign into Steam, Xbox or the relevant PC launcher while online and install games to the internal NVMe drive or a compatible microSD card.
- For Deck, check the Steam compatibility label and community reports before buying an online-only game with anti-cheat.
- For Ally, finish Windows, Xbox and launcher updates before travel. A USB-C dock or a 65W-class charger is useful for the higher-power modes; Deck listings commonly include a 45W charger.
- Test sleep and resume with each launcher. SteamOS is designed around handheld sleep; Windows behavior can vary by launcher and update state.
Which model is best for specific buyers?
Already own a PS5 and need a second screen
Buy Portal. At $249.99 it is the lightest option and preserves DualSense-style haptics, adaptive triggers and familiar stick spacing in supported PS5 games. It is especially convenient when someone else is using the television. Do not buy it as a first gaming system: without a PS5, cloud-capable Premium subscription and reliable internet, its value collapses.
Mostly play Steam games and want minimal setup
Buy Steam Deck OLED. SteamOS sleep/resume, per-game controls, trackpads and the 7.4-inch HDR OLED make it the least laptop-like PC handheld. The $789 512GB price is high after the May 2026 increase, but it is still $210 below the Ally X and gives you the same local, offline model of play. Choose refurbished only if a unit is actually available; October stock was exceptionally thin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Need Fortnite, Valorant, Warzone, Game Pass or several PC stores
Buy the $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally when budget matters, or the $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X when you want 24GB RAM, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery. The base model is near Deck performance at its 20W mode, not Ally X speed. The X is about $51 above the new 1TB Deck, so the premium is mainly for Windows compatibility, extra memory, battery capacity and higher performance rather than storage alone.
Want an OLED Windows handheld regardless of price
The $1,299.99 ROG Xbox Ally X20 adds a 7.4-inch OLED, TMR sticks and a redesigned chassis. It does not add speed: IGN’s October 16 figures put Cyberpunk 2077 at 42 FPS on X20 versus 43 FPS on Ally X, and 3DMark Steel Nomad at 598 versus 602. Pay the additional $300 for the display, stick technology and chassis, not for higher frame rates.
Travel often or play away from home internet
Choose Deck or Ally and pre-install games. Portal depends on a suitable Wi-Fi path and cannot create an offline mode. Deck offers the simplest offline experience for compatible Steam games; Ally offers more library choice but more Windows maintenance. Hotel Wi-Fi captive portals and congested networks are particularly poor Portal conditions.

Portal’s fused grips replicate a DualSense layout and provide haptics and adaptive triggers when the streamed title supports them. Because the grips are integrated, a worn stick is a whole-device repair rather than a quick modular swap. PlayStation Link favors Pulse Elite or Pulse Explore headsets; ordinary Bluetooth earbuds need an adapter.

The base Xbox Ally uses Hall-effect triggers and two rear buttons. Ally X adds impulse triggers, USB4 and a larger battery. X20 uses TMR sticks and ASUS Japan’s materials specify a 3 percent deadzone. All three have microSD expansion; the Ally X’s USB4 also enables a faster dock or external graphics path.
What accessories and buying channels should you plan for?
- Storage: a microSD card works in Deck, Ally and Ally X; heavy modern PC libraries can fill 512GB quickly.
- Protection: budget for a carrying case and screen protector, especially for OLED panels.
- Power: carry a suitable USB-C charger or power bank. Higher-wattage Ally modes benefit from a 65W-class charger, while Deck commonly ships with 45W.
- Docking: a USB-C dock adds display, Ethernet and peripherals; Ally X’s USB4 provides more expansion headroom.
- Portal audio: plan around PlayStation Link or wired 3.5mm audio rather than assuming every Bluetooth headset will pair.
Portal is a standard Sony accessory and is commonly listed by major retailers. Valve sells Deck OLED directly, while marketplace listings can cost more: an October 2026 check found reseller prices around $855 for 512GB and above $1,000 for 1TB. The Ally family is widely sold through Amazon and other PC retailers, but verify the exact model number; imported or unavailable listings can exceed the $999.99 US Ally X MSRP.
How we picked the recommendations
The recommendations use the factors that change the ownership experience rather than a single speed score: existing game library, local versus streamed play, anti-cheat support, offline reliability, current October 2026 US pricing, display quality, battery capacity, weight, setup effort and repair or accessory options. Performance figures are attributed to the published sources and use different scenes or methods, so they are context rather than a single universal ranking.

Buy the device that runs the games you already own with the fewest compromises. Portal is the correct accessory for a PS5 owner who wants room-to-room Remote Play and accepts network dependence. Steam Deck OLED is the best fit for a Steam-focused player who values OLED contrast, trackpads, offline play and a console-like interface. ROG Xbox Ally models are the practical answer for Windows stores, Game Pass and anti-cheat multiplayer; the base Ally keeps entry cost down, while Ally X buys more performance and battery. X20 is a display-and-hardware luxury upgrade, not a faster Ally X.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PlayStation Portal work if I do not own a PS5?
It can use Sony cloud streaming when paired with an active PS Plus Premium subscription, but it still requires a broadband connection and a supported cloud title. It cannot install games or operate offline, so it is not a standalone replacement for a console.
Do I need PS Plus to use Portal Remote Play at home?
No. Remote Play from your own PS5 does not require any PS Plus tier. Premium is the tier that adds cloud streaming when you want to play while the console is unavailable.
Can I upgrade storage on the Steam Deck OLED or ROG Xbox Ally?
All three local handheld families discussed here include a microSD slot, so capacity can be expanded without replacing the internal drive. The Ally X also offers USB4 for fast external storage through a suitable dock or enclosure.
Recommended Free Tools
Is the 2023 Z1 Extreme ROG Ally the same as the 2026 Xbox Ally?
No. The 2023 Z1 and Z1 Extreme models are older products and are discontinued as the headline US devices. In 2026 US shopping, ROG Ally usually refers to the newer Xbox Ally family with Z2 A or Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chips.
Can I use ordinary Bluetooth headphones with Portal?
Portal is built around Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless system, so common Bluetooth earbuds do not pair in the same way they do with Steam Deck. Use a compatible PlayStation Link headset, the 3.5mm jack or an appropriate adapter.
