Switch 2 digital sharing has three different mechanisms, and they do not offer the same access. You can load a virtual game card on a linked console so every user there can play offline; lend an eligible card to a member of your Nintendo Account family group for 14 days; or use an online license, which lets only the purchasing account play while connected to the internet. Choosing the wrong method is the usual reason a family member cannot start a game.

Nintendo’s current support guidance, verified in 2026, treats every eShop game and downloadable content (DLC) purchase as a virtual game card. The practical rules below explain who can play, when an internet connection is required, what happens to save data, and which Switch and Switch 2 combinations are supported.

The three ways to share a digital game

Method Who can play Internet while playing Main limits
Load a virtual game card Any user on the console where the card is loaded No, once loading is complete An account can link up to two Switch or Switch 2 consoles; a card is loaded on one console at a time
Lend a virtual game card An eligible member of the same Nintendo Account family group, on the borrowing console Internet and nearby consoles are needed to start the loan; the game can then be played offline Eligible titles only; the loan lasts 14 days; the lender cannot use that card during the loan
Use an online license Only the Nintendo Account that bought the game Yes It is not family sharing; it is useful when the account uses more than two consoles

These distinctions come from Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide, the company’s family-group lending instructions, and its guidance on playing games across multiple consoles.

What a virtual game card does

A digital game or DLC bought from Nintendo eShop is represented as a virtual game card. When you load that card onto a console, the software behaves much like a physical cartridge for access purposes: it can start without an internet connection, and other user profiles on that same console can play it. Nintendo states that “when a virtual game card for a game or DLC is loaded onto a console, it can be played even if the console is not connected to the internet, and other users who are on that console can also play the game or DLC.” See Nintendo’s official guide for the current account and console controls.

Two linked consoles per account

A Nintendo Account can link up to two Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 consoles for virtual game cards. This is an account-level limit, not a statement that a household may own only two consoles. If you have a third console, the purchasing account can generally use an online license there, but the card-loading method covers only the two linked systems. Nintendo UK documents the two-console rule on its Switch 2 virtual game card page.

Moving a card between consoles

To move a card, the relevant consoles must be connected to the internet or left in sleep mode with an internet connection, so Nintendo can complete the change. After the card is loaded on its destination console, play itself does not require internet. A card is loaded on one console at a time; loading it on another system changes where that card is available to local users.

  1. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that purchased the game or DLC on the consoles you intend to use.
  2. Make sure both linked consoles are online, or in sleep mode with an active internet connection, before starting the move.
  3. Open the consoles’ virtual game card management controls and choose the game or DLC to load on the selected console, following the prompts in Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide.
  4. After loading finishes, any user on that console can launch the software offline. A later move requires the same online or sleep-mode connection check.

This method is the closest thing to household sharing: the card holder can designate a console, and every profile on that console receives access. It does not, however, make the same card simultaneously available on two consoles.

How family-group lending works

Lending is a temporary transfer, not a second permanent entitlement. The lender and borrower must belong to the same Nintendo Account family group. Their consoles need to be close to each other and online when the loan is initiated; they do not need to remain near each other during the 14-day borrowing period.

Starting a loan

  1. Confirm that both people are members of the same Nintendo Account family group and that the title is marked as eligible for lending.
  2. Bring the lender’s and borrower’s consoles close together and connect both to the internet.
  3. Use the virtual game card controls to select the eligible title and send it to the family-group member’s nearby console.
  4. Wait for the transfer to complete before separating the consoles. The borrower can then play the loaded card offline.

The borrower can keep the virtual game card for 14 days. At the end of that period it is automatically returned to the lender. Nintendo Support Singapore says, “Virtual game cards that are lent out cannot be played until they are returned.” In practical terms, the lender loses access for the entire loan, and the borrower cannot lend the card onward.

How many cards can be lent?

Nintendo’s regional pages describe the allocation slightly differently. The US overview says an account may lend up to three virtual game cards at a time. Singapore’s instructions specify that each family-group member can lend one card and that up to three people may borrow different cards simultaneously. Both descriptions include an important per-console restriction: a recipient console can receive only one lent card at a time, and an individual borrower can borrow only one card at a time. Do not interpret the three-card wording as permission for one borrower to build a temporary library of several cards.

What happens to DLC?

If the base game and its purchased DLC are part of the same virtual game card, they travel together when the card is lent. If the base game is physical, DLC may be managed separately, and the borrower still needs the physical base game to use that content. A loan therefore does not replace a cartridge that the borrower does not own.

Save data stays where you played

Lending or loading a card does not move your progress. Save data remains on the console that created it, while the virtual game card controls software access. If you change consoles, use Nintendo’s Save Data Transfer feature or Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud where the game and subscription support it. A borrower receives the game entitlement for the loan, not the lender’s save files.

Online licenses are a separate option

An online license allows the purchasing Nintendo Account to play its own digital games on an internet-connected console without loading the virtual game card there. This can help an account that uses more than two consoles, because the online-license route is not limited to the two consoles linked for card loading. The trade-off is strict: only the purchasing account can use that license, and the console must stay connected while the game is played.

Other profiles on that console do not gain access through an online license, and family-group membership does not change that restriction. If another household member needs to play, load the virtual game card on the console they use or lend an eligible card to that person instead. Switch and Switch 2 compatibility

Switch 2-only software

Games made exclusively for Switch 2 require Switch 2 hardware. Lending cannot make that software run on an original Nintendo Switch.

Switch 2 Edition games on an original Switch

Cross-generation lending is supported for compatible games, but a Switch 2 Edition used on an original Switch provides the corresponding Switch software without the Switch 2 Edition additions. The enhanced features therefore require Switch 2 hardware even when the underlying game is available on both generations. Nintendo lists compatibility details in its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility guidance.

Titles that cannot be lent

Not every digital purchase is loanable. Nintendo says some software cannot be lent, including some games supplied through a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the individual title’s current virtual game card eligibility before promising a loan; ownership of a digital copy alone is not enough.

Which method should you choose?

  • Everyone on one console needs access: load the virtual game card there. This gives local profiles offline play.
  • A family member on another nearby console needs a temporary copy: use lending if the title is eligible. Plan around the 14-day automatic return and the lender’s loss of access.
  • The purchasing account uses a third console: use an online license, accepting the always-online requirement and single-account access.
  • You need two people to play the same purchase at the same time: the card-loading method cannot keep one card loaded on two consoles, lending removes the lender’s access, and an online license is restricted to the purchasing account. A second entitlement or a separate copy may be required.

Common problems and fixes

“The other profile cannot start the game.”

Check whether the virtual game card is actually loaded on that console. If the game is being accessed through an online license, switch to a loaded card; online-license access is limited to the purchasing account.

“The loan option is missing.”

Verify family-group membership, internet connectivity, nearby-console requirements, and the title’s lending eligibility. Membership games and other restricted software may not show a lending option.

“The lender’s game stopped working.”

That is expected while the card is lent. The lender must wait for the borrower to return it or for the 14-day automatic return to occur.

“My save file is not on the borrower’s console.”

Save data remains on the original console. Use Save Data Transfer or supported Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud features; lending itself does not copy progress.

“The enhanced version is missing on an original Switch.”

An original Switch can run the compatible Switch software, but Switch 2 Edition additions require Switch 2 hardware.

Bottom line

For most households, load a virtual game card on the console where multiple profiles need offline access. Use family lending for a qualifying, time-limited loan—not as a permanent second copy—and remember that the lender cannot play during the 14-day loan. Use an online license only when the purchasing account itself will play on an internet-connected console. These rules, rather than the simple fact that a game was bought digitally, determine who can play and where.
