Office 2024 is a one-time purchase, not a subscription—but “keeps on giving” has limits. Microsoft provides security and quality updates during its support period, while new features and major-version upgrades are not included. If you want continuing feature updates, cloud storage and use across multiple devices, Microsoft 365 is the better fit.
What you get with Office Home 2024
Microsoft Office Home 2024 is a one-time purchase for one person on one PC or Mac. It includes classic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Microsoft’s product page displayed a price of $179.99 when checked; the price may vary by region or change over time.
Microsoft highlights modernized visuals and navigation, improved search, more robust spreadsheet formulas, easier file sharing and comment notifications, performance improvements, and new autosave. Its Office 2024 FAQ describes the release as a subset of Microsoft 365 Apps features, including accessibility improvements and updates across Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. These are changes included in this release, not a promise of ongoing feature additions.
Office 2024 vs. Microsoft 365
The practical difference is how you pay and what happens after purchase. Office 2024 gives you a fixed set of apps under a perpetual license for one device. Microsoft 365 keeps its apps current while you remain subscribed and includes services such as OneDrive storage.

A perpetual purchase can suit someone who prefers one upfront payment, needs the included apps on one computer and does not depend on new features. A subscription is more appropriate if you want app updates, storage or installations on several devices.
Does Office 2024 keep getting new features?
No. Office 2024 includes the improvements Microsoft shipped with this release, then receives security and quality servicing rather than the continuing feature updates associated with Microsoft 365. You can keep the installed version patched during its support period, but new functionality arriving in Microsoft 365 does not automatically become part of Office 2024. A later major Office version is a separate purchase.

Support dates and internet requirements
For consumer Office 2024 Home and Home & Business editions on Windows and Mac, Microsoft’s lifecycle listing gives a start date of October 1, 2024 and a retirement date of October 10, 2029 (Pacific Time). See the Office 2024 lifecycle page for the listing. Support through that date does not mean feature upgrades continue until then.
Office 2024 is not a fully offline solution. Microsoft says internet access is needed to redeem the purchase, associate it with an account, activate the apps, obtain updates and keep the software patched. The FAQ also confirms Windows 32-bit and 64-bit support and availability for Windows and Mac. Check the current requirements for your specific device and edition before buying.

When Office LTSC 2024 is the relevant edition
Office LTSC 2024 is not the consumer one-time-purchase edition. It is offered through volume licensing for organizations in highly regulated or restricted environments that cannot take feature updates. Microsoft says LTSC receives five years of mainstream support, with no extended support after that period, and gets no new features after release. Its LTSC overview also documents OpenDocument Format 1.4 support in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with ODF 1.4 used by default when saving ODF files.
For a personal computer, compare Office Home 2024 with Microsoft 365. Office Home & Business 2024 is the consumer product to investigate if you need the business edition; confirm the license terms and current availability for your region before purchasing.
