Use Microsoft Edge when you mainly read, search, print, highlight, annotate, add simple text, or complete straightforward forms. Choose Adobe Acrobat when your work regularly requires changing existing PDF text or images, converting files, combining or splitting documents, organizing pages, compressing files, protecting them with passwords, or using online e-signature tools. Edge’s built-in reader is free and remains separate from Acrobat; Acrobat’s advanced tools generally require a paid subscription. Test your important PDFs before deciding, because Edge does not support JavaScript forms or XFA forms, and feature availability can vary by device, market, browser version, and Acrobat plan.
Edge and Acrobat solve different PDF problems
The most useful way to compare these products is by the job you need to complete, not by asking which one is universally “better.” Edge is a browser with an integrated PDF reader. It covers the everyday tasks most people perform after receiving a document. Acrobat is a dedicated PDF application and an Edge extension that adds deeper document-editing and file-management capabilities.
That distinction matters because “edit a PDF” can mean two very different things. Adding a comment, highlight, ink mark, or a small text box is basic markup. Rewriting the original paragraph, changing an image embedded in the page, converting the file to another format, or rearranging a multi-file packet is document editing. Edge handles the first category; Acrobat is aimed at the second.

What you can do with Edge’s built-in PDF reader
Read, search, navigate, and print
Edge opens PDFs in the browser, so you can read documents without installing a separate PDF application. Its documented reader functions include page navigation, text search, printing, and ordinary viewing. For many people, this is all that is needed for manuals, invoices, schedules, reports, and downloaded forms.

Because the reader is built into Edge, it is a practical default on a Windows computer where the browser is already installed. You can open a file from a download, a local folder, or a web link, then use the PDF toolbar for navigation and search. If your workflow ends after reading or printing, paying for Acrobat adds little.
Highlight, annotate, and draw
Edge supports highlighting, annotations, and inking. These tools are useful for study notes, review comments, sign-off marks, and handwritten emphasis on a touchscreen or with a stylus. You can also add text to a PDF and save a copy that retains your highlights and other markings.
This is markup rather than a rewrite of the source document. A highlight does not change the underlying paragraph, and an annotation does not reflow the page around it. That distinction prevents a common mistake: expecting a browser reader to behave like a full layout editor.
Translate selected PDF text
Microsoft says Edge can translate PDF text and offers more than 70 languages. Treat that figure as a product capability statement rather than a guarantee for every installation: Microsoft also notes that features can vary by device, market, and browser version. If translation is missing, check that Edge is current and try the same document on another supported device before assuming the PDF itself is defective.
Summarize with Copilot when available
Edge can offer Copilot-based PDF summarization in supported configurations. Availability is version- and market-sensitive, so it should be considered an optional convenience rather than a universal part of the reader. For legal, financial, medical, or otherwise consequential documents, use any generated summary as a navigation aid and verify important details against the original pages.

Fill straightforward forms
Edge supports basic form filling. This can be enough for simple fields such as names, dates, addresses, check boxes, and ordinary signature workflows. Save the completed copy and reopen it before sending so you can confirm that the entries remain visible and that the recipient’s system displays them correctly.
Do not assume that every interactive form is supported. Microsoft’s deployment documentation states that JavaScript forms are unsupported and that XML Forms Architecture (XFA), a legacy form format, is unsupported. A form that appears blank, refuses to calculate a value, hides controls, or does not respond to a button may require a different application or a replacement form supplied by the organization that created it.
What Acrobat adds
Edit existing text and images
The major reason to move from Edge to Acrobat is the ability to work on the document’s existing content. Microsoft describes Acrobat’s advanced tools as including editing text and images. This is materially different from placing a text box over an old sentence: the goal is to alter the original page content while preserving the PDF’s structure as far as the file allows.
Results still depend on how the PDF was made. A scanned page may need text recognition before its words can be edited, and fonts or unusual layouts can affect the result. The practical test is your own file: open a representative document, change a sentence and an image, and inspect the exported page at normal and high zoom.
Convert PDFs to other formats
Acrobat provides conversion tools for moving PDF content into other file formats. Conversion is useful when a PDF is a starting point for a report, spreadsheet, presentation, or editable text document rather than the final destination. Check the converted file for missing columns, altered line breaks, lost fonts, and misplaced images before treating it as production-ready.

Create, combine, split, and organize files
Adobe’s extension listing describes premium tools for PDF creation, combining, splitting, and page organization. These operations matter when you receive document packets from several people, need to extract selected pages, or must put a report, appendices, and signed forms into a defined order.

Edge can display and mark up a finished packet, but it is not the right tool for repeatedly assembling and restructuring one. If that operation appears in your weekly process, the time saved by Acrobat may justify its subscription even when Edge remains your preferred reader.
Compress and protect documents
Acrobat’s listed premium tools also include compression and password protection. Compression can make a large document easier to upload or email, while password protection can add a sharing control when a recipient needs a password to open the file. Confirm the recipient’s requirements first: some portals reject encrypted files, and compression can affect image quality.
Sign and request online signatures
The extension offers free signing and lists online e-signing among its premium capabilities. A simple personal signature is different from a managed signature workflow that tracks recipients, sends reminders, or records completion. Choose the level your process actually requires and verify the current plan’s inclusions before subscribing.
Cost: free Edge reader versus a paid Acrobat tier
Microsoft says the built-in Edge PDF solution remains free and separate from Adobe Acrobat. You do not need an Acrobat subscription merely to open, read, search, print, highlight, annotate, add simple text, or use basic Edge PDF functions.

Microsoft also says that advanced operations through the Acrobat extension—such as editing text and images, converting PDFs, and combining files—require a paid Acrobat subscription. Adobe’s listing separates free notes, comments, form filling, and signing from premium conversion, creation, combining, splitting, page organization, compression, password protection, and online e-signing.
No single price or plan label should be treated as permanent. Adobe’s feature boundaries, regional availability, promotions, and subscription terms can change. Compare the current plan with the exact operations you need, rather than paying for a broad feature list you will not use.
Choose by the work you actually do
Edge is enough when your work is read-and-markup
- You open PDFs to read, search, print, or reference them.
- You highlight passages, add comments, draw, or insert occasional text.
- You fill ordinary forms with standard fields.
- You need translation or summarization only when those features are available in your Edge build.
- You do not need to change the original wording, images, page order, or file format.
Acrobat is worth considering for recurring production work
- You regularly revise text or images already on a PDF page.
- You convert PDFs into editable office formats or create PDFs from other files.
- You combine packets, split selected pages, or organize large document sets.
- You repeatedly compress files, apply password protection, or run online signature workflows.
- Your organization supplies JavaScript or XFA forms that Edge cannot process.
A mixed workflow can be the sensible answer
You do not have to make one application handle every PDF. Keep Edge as the quick reader for incoming documents and use Acrobat only for files that need advanced editing, conversion, assembly, or specialized form handling. This approach avoids a subscription for occasional reading while preserving a dedicated tool for the jobs that genuinely need it.
Test your own PDFs before deciding
Feature lists are less useful than a short test with the files you actually receive. Use a representative sample that includes an ordinary report, a form, a document with images, and any multi-file packet your work commonly produces.
- List the required outcomes. Write down whether you need reading, markup, basic form filling, existing-text edits, image edits, conversion, combining, splitting, compression, password protection, or e-signatures.
- Open each sample in Edge. Check page navigation, search, printing, highlights, comments, inking, text additions, and saving a marked-up copy.
- Exercise every form control. Type in fields, select boxes, trigger calculations, and test buttons. A form that only accepts plain text is not proof that its scripts or calculations work.
- Look for unsupported-form symptoms. If a JavaScript or XFA form fails to calculate, displays missing controls, or rejects input, record that as a requirement for another tool.
- Test the advanced operations you would pay for. In Acrobat, edit a sentence, change an image, convert a file, combine two PDFs, split selected pages, organize their order, compress the result, and apply the protection or signature process you need.
- Inspect the output. Reopen every saved or converted file, check page order and fonts, test links and fields, and confirm that markings remain visible. Keep the original unchanged until the new copy passes review.
- Check availability on every target device. Edge features can vary by device, market, and browser version. Acrobat capabilities can vary by extension state and subscription plan. Test on the computers and accounts your team will actually use.
Practical workflows
Reading and marking up with Edge
- Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge.
- Use the reader toolbar to search, move between pages, and print when needed.
- Apply highlights, comments, ink, or added text for the review notes you need.
- Save a copy after marking it up, preserving the original source file separately.
Saving a copy is especially important for shared or downloaded documents. It lets you distinguish the publisher’s original from your reviewed version and gives you a recoverable file if later edits are incorrect.

Handling a complex form
- Open the form in Edge and identify whether all fields and controls respond.
- Enter a test value in each field and trigger any calculation or submission control.
- If scripts, calculations, or XFA controls fail, stop treating Edge as a compatible form viewer.
- Obtain the form creator’s supported application guidance or open the file in Acrobat if your organization’s plan and policy permit it.
- Verify the completed output by reopening it and checking that values and signatures remain present.
Using Acrobat for a document packet
- Install or enable the Acrobat extension in Edge and sign in to the account associated with the required plan.
- Open the source PDFs and choose the operation required: edit, convert, combine, split, organize, compress, protect, or sign.
- Arrange pages and inspect each section before saving the finished file.
- Use the appropriate sharing or signature workflow, then retain a final copy and any completion record your process requires.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing annotation with editing
A text box placed over a sentence may look like an edit but can leave the original text underneath. If the document must be legally, operationally, or visually corrected, use a tool designed to edit the existing content and inspect the resulting file.
Assuming every Edge feature is universal
Microsoft qualifies Edge PDF capabilities by device type, market, and browser version. Translation, Copilot summarization, and other toolbar options may not appear for every user. Keep Edge updated and verify the feature on the target device instead of promising it to every recipient.
Buying Acrobat without matching the plan to the task
“Acrobat” is not one unchanging feature bundle. Adobe separates free functions from premium tools, and plan boundaries can change. Before subscribing, make a checklist of the specific operations you need and confirm that the current plan includes them in your country and account type.

Some forms display entries during editing but lose them when saved or opened elsewhere. Reopen the final file, test key fields, and ask the recipient whether they require a particular application or file format.

Can Edge edit PDFs?
Edge can add text, highlights, annotations, and ink, and it can fill basic forms. It is not the right choice when “edit” means changing existing PDF text or images, converting files, or restructuring pages.
Do you need Acrobat to edit a PDF?
