For most people using a fully updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 home PC, Microsoft Defender is a sensible default and a separate antivirus subscription is optional. In AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 consumer test, Defender scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability. Bitdefender Total Security and Norton 360 each scored 6/6 in all three categories. A paid suite can still make sense if you need its particular bundle of features, prefer another vendor’s controls or want coverage for more devices; the decision should be based on current-version testing, actual features, privacy settings and renewal cost rather than the assumption that paid software is automatically safer.
Do I need antivirus if I have Windows Defender?
Usually, no additional real-time antivirus is required. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it is designed to provide ongoing malware protection when its real-time and cloud-assisted features are enabled. The wider Windows Security app also includes firewall, app and browser controls, device-security settings and other protections.
That does not make every Windows installation identical. Settings can be changed by you, by another security product or by an organization’s policies, and some features may be unavailable on a managed PC. The practical question is therefore not simply “free versus paid,” but whether the protection currently active on your computer is enabled, maintained and appropriate for how you use the machine.

For a typical home user who installs Windows and application updates, uses a standard account for everyday work and keeps Defender’s protections enabled, it is generally an adequate baseline. Independent testing supports that conclusion, while also showing that some paid products can match or exceed Defender in particular test categories.

What the latest consumer test actually measured
AV-TEST evaluated Windows 11 home-user products during July and August 2026. The lab used default settings, the most current publicly available product versions, permitted updates and cloud queries, and tested realistic usage scenarios. Each category is scored from zero to six, so the results apply to the named products, versions, platform and test period—not to every future release or every possible threat.

See the complete AV-TEST Windows 11 August 2026 results for the methodology and all products. The table does not establish that either paid suite will block every attack on your PC, nor that Defender will behave identically on a different build, with different settings or under a later test.
What an earlier Defender result means
In a separate September–October 2025 Defender test, AV-TEST reported 100% detection of widespread and prevalent malware discovered during the preceding four weeks, and awarded Defender 6/6 for protection, performance and usability. That figure describes that test’s sample and period; it is not a claim of 100% detection of all malware today. The dated result is documented on AV-TEST’s Defender 4.18 test page.

Defender Antivirus is one component of Windows Security. Treat the other controls as separate layers: having the app installed does not prove that every control is enabled or configured for your situation.
Firewall
The Windows firewall helps control network traffic. It is distinct from malware scanning, so a computer can have an active antivirus provider while firewall rules or profiles still need attention.
App and browser controls
Windows Security exposes reputation and application controls intended to warn about unsafe apps, files or websites. Browser and download behavior can affect how often these warnings appear, and an administrator can restrict which settings you can change.
Device security
Hardware-backed and platform-security options are grouped under Device security when the PC supports them. Availability depends on the computer’s firmware, hardware and Windows configuration.

Cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission
Microsoft recommends cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission for optimal Defender protection. Cloud queries can help Microsoft assess suspicious files quickly; automatic sample submission means suspicious files or samples may be sent for evaluation, so review the privacy information and any prompts if that matters for your work or personal data.
Controlled folder access
Controlled folder access can block untrusted applications from changing files in protected folders. Legitimate programs may need to be added as trusted when the feature prevents an expected save or update. It is a ransomware-mitigation control, not a replacement for backups or a guarantee that every folder and application is covered.

How can I check whether Defender is protecting my PC?
Use Windows Security rather than relying on an old tray icon or a third-party installer’s claim. The labels can vary slightly by Windows release, but the following path is the normal starting point.
- Open the Start menu, type Windows Security, and open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Look for the current provider and the status of Real-time protection. A warning or a message that another provider is managing protection means Defender may not be the active real-time engine.
- Open Virus & threat protection settings and review Real-time protection, Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission.
- Return to the main Windows Security page and review Firewall & network protection, App & browser control and Device security as applicable to your PC.
Microsoft’s antivirus and antimalware FAQ explains the provider behavior and settings. If a setting is missing, locked or repeatedly changes back, the PC may be managed by an employer, school or other administrator.
What happens when I install a third-party antivirus?
A compatible third-party antivirus that installs and activates its own real-time protection normally causes Defender Antivirus to turn off automatically. This hand-off is intentional: Microsoft recommends against running multiple real-time antivirus or antispyware products at the same time because they can affect performance and can cause update or installation errors.
If you are replacing Defender with another suite
- Choose one product and download it from the vendor’s genuine site or an authorized channel.
- Install it normally and allow it to complete its initial update.
- Open Windows Security and verify which provider is listed under Virus & threat protection.
- Confirm that the new product reports real-time protection as active before assuming the transition is complete.
If you are removing the third-party product
- Use the product’s own uninstall process and follow any vendor-specific removal instructions, especially if the normal Windows uninstall leaves a security component behind.
- Restart if the uninstaller requests it.
- Open Windows Security and check that Defender has reactivated and that real-time protection is on.
- Run Windows Update and the security product’s update check before browsing or opening unfamiliar files.
Microsoft says Defender should turn back on after the other antivirus is uninstalled, but verify the status instead of assuming the switch occurred. The Microsoft procedure for checking an item with Windows Security is documented at Scan an item with Windows Security.

When is a paid antivirus suite worth considering?
Paying can be reasonable when the suite solves a requirement that Defender and Windows Security do not address for you. It is not automatically justified by the word “premium” or by a single perfect test score.
You want a specific bundle
Some suites combine antivirus with features such as password management, identity monitoring, parental controls, privacy tools or protection for devices beyond Windows. Consider each feature separately: a bundle is useful only when you will use it and when its controls fit your privacy and account preferences.
You prefer another vendor’s interface or support model
Usability includes warnings, explanations, exclusions and recovery controls. A different interface can be a legitimate reason to pay if it helps you respond correctly to alerts, manage several household devices or obtain the support channel you prefer.
You need multi-device coverage
Compare the number and type of devices covered by the subscription, not just the first-year price. Check whether Windows, macOS, Android or iOS coverage is included under the same terms and whether a device transfer is allowed.
You have evaluated renewal and privacy terms
Promotional pricing can change at renewal. Read the recurring price, cancellation process, automatic-renewal setting, data-collection disclosures and refund terms before entering payment details. A lower introductory price is not evidence of better protection.

Use a product-specific checklist and current independent testing. Do not combine a vendor’s feature list with a laboratory score as if they measured the same thing.
- Protection: Look for recent independent results on the same operating system and a comparable product version. Record the test period and category score.
- Performance: Consider the lab’s performance score and the effect of scans, updates and browser integrations on your own workflow. A lab result is a comparison point, not a promise for every PC.
- False positives and usability: Review how the product reports blocked files, lets you restore a false positive and explains required actions.
- Features you will actually use: Separate antivirus, firewall, browser controls, identity services, parental tools and backup-related features. Do not pay for a bundle solely because its feature list is longer.
- Privacy controls: Check cloud analysis, sample submission, telemetry choices and account requirements. Decide whether those terms suit the files and network on which you work.
- Cost and renewal: Compare the recurring price, covered devices and cancellation terms rather than only the first billing period.
- Recovery: Confirm that the vendor provides a removal or cleanup process and clear instructions for restoring protection if the suite is uninstalled.
For the products named in the August 2026 test, Defender’s 5.5/6 performance score was slightly below the two paid suites’ 6/6 scores, while all three scored 6/6 for protection and usability. That difference is useful context, but it is too small and too specific to justify a universal “paid is better” rule.

What are the most common Defender and antivirus mistakes?
Running two real-time products
Installing a second suite “for extra safety” can create conflicts rather than add a second independent shield. Follow Microsoft’s guidance and keep one real-time antivirus provider active; use Windows Security to confirm the hand-off when changing products.
Assuming an expired subscription is still protecting you
A paid application may remain installed after its subscription, license or updates lapse. Check the provider status and update state in Windows Security and in the product’s own dashboard. If you no longer want the suite, remove it cleanly and verify that Defender is active afterward.

Exclusions and Controlled folder access permissions should be narrow and limited to software you trust. Disabling real-time protection globally removes a layer for every file and process, so restore the setting after troubleshooting and investigate why the application was blocked.
Treating one test score as a guarantee
Independent tests use defined samples, settings, versions and dates. Malware changes, software updates and your own configuration can alter the outcome. Use test results to compare products under the same conditions, not to claim that any computer is invulnerable.
Ignoring updates and account security
Antivirus cannot compensate for an unpatched operating system, obsolete applications, reused passwords or unsafe account recovery. Keep Windows and applications updated, use strong unique credentials and maintain backups that are not permanently exposed to the PC.

Most home users with one current Windows PC
Keep Defender enabled, review the Windows Security status, install updates and leave the recommended cloud settings on unless a documented privacy or compatibility requirement says otherwise. This is the lowest-complexity setup and avoids paying for capabilities you will not use.
Households with several device types or extra services
Compare a paid suite when centralized management, cross-platform coverage or a particular bundled service would replace separate tools you already pay for. Verify every device type and the recurring terms before subscribing.

Users who need a different workflow
A third-party suite can be appropriate if its alerts, exclusions, support or controls are materially easier for you to manage. Install only one real-time product and check Windows Security after installation.
Employer- or school-managed PCs
Do not override administrative policy to install another antivirus. The organization may control Defender, firewall and app settings centrally; ask the administrator which provider and policies are intended for the device.
What is the practical verdict?
Start with the protection already included in Windows: confirm that Defender is the active provider, keep Windows updated and review the Windows Security controls that matter to your use. Choose a paid suite only for a concrete need—such as a particular bundle, management experience or multi-device arrangement—and then compare its current test evidence, privacy settings and renewal terms. Whichever option you select, keep one real-time antivirus engine active and verify its status after every installation or removal.
