No confirmed Microsoft–Valve acquisition is established by the reports behind this rumor. In February 2018, outlets reported that Valve co-founder Gabe Newell had replied to a fan asking whether Valve was being bought: “Not that I’m aware of.” That was a reported email exchange—not a formal company announcement—and one report questioned whether the reply was authentic.
What did Gabe Newell reportedly say?
Softpedia reported on February 5, 2018, that a Valve fan emailed Newell to ask whether Microsoft was buying Valve. The reply attributed to him was: “Not that I’m aware of.” Softpedia’s contemporaneous report cautioned that the response could be fake, describing the sender as someone who “appears to be Gabe Newell himself.”
MSPoweruser’s report, updated February 6, 2018, also described a screenshot of the fan’s email and the same short reply. It said the email address appeared consistent with Newell’s public contact address, but that does not make the exchange an official Valve statement or independently authenticate it.
Was Microsoft buying Valve?
The reported reply was not confirmation of a sale or acquisition talks. It was a brief answer attributed to Newell in a fan email, and the contemporaneous coverage did not establish a transaction. The rumor circulated in the February 2018 news cycle; it should not be presented as a new announcement in 2026.

Reports at the time placed Valve in broader speculation about possible Microsoft gaming acquisitions, alongside Electronic Arts. Les Numériques’ contemporaneous account discussed claims attributed to an analyst about Microsoft’s acquisition appetite. That was context offered for the rumor, not verified evidence of Microsoft’s plans.
What is known about the rumor today?
The available reporting establishes the existence of the 2018 rumor and the email reply that outlets attributed to Newell. It does not establish whether Microsoft and Valve have private acquisition discussions now, or whether a current transaction is underway. Microsoft’s public acquisition history lists disclosed deals, but a public list cannot determine the status of undisclosed discussions.

How to distinguish the email from an official announcement
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Reported fan email and reply | Contemporaneous outlets attributed “Not that I’m aware of” to Newell in response to a fan asking about a buyout. | A formal Valve position, verified authenticity, or an acquisition agreement. |
| Company announcement | A direct corporate statement would establish what the company publicly announced. | No such announcement is documented in the cited 2018 accounts; the cited Microsoft history page covers disclosed acquisitions, not private discussions. |
