For most buyers, the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS is the safer choice. It has 8 cores and 16 threads, a Radeon 780M integrated GPU, and a documented Ryzen AI NPU. The Intel Core 5 205H has 8 cores and 12 threads, but its integrated graphics are disabled, so a laptop built around it needs a discrete GPU for graphics output. Choose the Intel processor when the complete laptop is substantially cheaper or includes a stronger discrete GPU and better overall equipment.
The short answer
The Ryzen 7 8845HS is the better all-round processor for a laptop that may run without a dedicated graphics card. Its Radeon 780M makes the system usable for display output, everyday acceleration and lighter gaming, while its four extra threads favor many parallel workloads. AMD also documents an NPU for local AI features.
The Core 5 205H is not automatically a bad choice. It can be sensible in a laptop that already includes a discrete GPU, especially if that machine has a better screen, larger battery, more memory, stronger cooling or a meaningfully lower total price. In that situation, the graphics card and the laptop’s power design usually matter more to gaming than the difference between these CPUs.

Clock speed alone does not determine laptop performance. A processor can sustain a high clock only when the cooling system, firmware and power limits allow it. The same CPU can therefore behave differently in two laptops with different chassis designs.
Why the disabled Intel graphics changes the decision
Ryzen 7 8845HS: a complete integrated-graphics platform
The Ryzen 7 8845HS includes Radeon 780M graphics with 12 graphics cores and a stated maximum frequency of 2.7 GHz. A laptop can use that GPU for its internal display and external monitors without adding a separate graphics processor. This reduces component count and allows manufacturers to build thinner or less expensive systems, although the final result still depends on memory configuration and cooling.
Core 5 205H: discrete graphics are required
The Core 5 205H specification reviewed here lists its integrated graphics as disabled. A laptop using this processor therefore needs a discrete GPU for graphics output. Do not interpret a listing that says “Core 5 205H” as a complete graphics solution; check the exact GPU model and whether the laptop’s display outputs are wired through it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This requirement affects price, weight, heat and battery capacity. A discrete GPU can make the Intel laptop considerably more capable in 3D applications, but it also introduces another power-hungry component. If a product listing does not clearly identify a discrete GPU, ask the seller or manufacturer before buying.
CPU performance: what the core and thread counts imply
Multicore and sustained workloads
Both processors are eight-core parts, but they organize those cores differently. Intel uses four performance cores plus four efficiency cores for 12 total threads. AMD uses eight Zen 4 cores with 16 threads. The extra four AMD threads and the homogeneous core design generally favor workloads that keep many threads busy, such as compiling code, rendering, batch photo exports, compression, virtual machines and heavy multitasking.
“Generally favors” is not the same as a guaranteed win. Laptop manufacturers can impose different sustained power limits, and a well-cooled Core 5 205H system may hold its performance longer than a thin Ryzen system configured at a lower limit. Look for reviews of the exact laptop when sustained performance is important.

Single-core and lightly threaded work
Intel specifies a maximum boost of up to 4.8 GHz, while AMD specifies up to 5.1 GHz. Those peaks are close enough that application behavior, cooling, memory latency, firmware and background activity usually matter more than the headline number. Office applications, web browsing and many short tasks may feel similar when both laptops have adequate solid-state storage and memory.

Neither boost figure is a constant operating speed. “Up to” describes a ceiling reached under suitable conditions, not a clock that the processor maintains during every task.
Gaming without a dedicated GPU
Why the Ryzen is the only practical option in this class
For a laptop that will rely on integrated graphics, choose the Ryzen 7 8845HS. Its Radeon 780M is an actual graphics processor with a stated 12 graphics cores and a 2.7 GHz maximum frequency. The Core 5 205H’s disabled iGPU cannot provide the same fallback; the system must include a discrete GPU.
Radeon 780M can make casual games, esports titles and older 3D games possible, but the usable resolution and quality settings depend on the game’s engine, laptop memory layout, cooling and driver version. Do not treat the presence of the Radeon name as a guarantee of a particular frame rate. Check testing of the exact laptop if a specific game is a purchase requirement.
Memory configuration matters to integrated graphics
An integrated GPU shares system memory with the CPU. A laptop with two memory channels can provide more bandwidth than a similar model running a single module, while an onboard LPDDR5X design may have different performance and upgrade characteristics. Compare the installed memory amount, channel configuration and memory type rather than comparing CPU names alone.
Gaming with a discrete GPU
When both laptops include a discrete GPU, that GPU usually determines most of the gaming performance. Compare its model, graphics memory, power limit and cooling before focusing on the CPU label. A laptop with the Core 5 205H and a substantially stronger discrete GPU can outperform a Ryzen laptop with a weaker one, even if the Ryzen processor is the better integrated platform.

Also check whether the internal display is connected directly to the discrete GPU or through an integrated-graphics path, whether a performance mode is required, and which ports support external monitors. These implementation details can affect frame rates, latency and the ability to use features such as variable-refresh displays.
AI hardware and software support
Ryzen 7 8845HS NPU
AMD documents up to 16 NPU TOPS for the Ryzen 7 8845HS and up to 38 total TOPS for the platform. The NPU is intended for supported local AI features that can run more efficiently than they would on the CPU alone. Actual benefits depend on the operating system, applications, drivers and the laptop manufacturer’s firmware.
Core 5 205H specification status
The reviewed Core 5 205H specification does not document a comparable dedicated NPU. That does not tell you that every AI application will fail; it tells you not to assume NPU acceleration from the processor name. Verify the complete laptop’s hardware and the software’s requirements if local AI processing is a priority.
TOPS is a theoretical throughput measure, not a direct prediction of application speed, battery life or quality. A supported model, driver and memory configuration are required before the advertised hardware can help.
Power, thermals and battery life
Both processors are 45 W-class laptop parts, so neither one guarantees long battery life or low temperatures by itself. AMD documents a configurable range from 35 W to 54 W. Notebookcheck’s specification context lists package power for the Intel chip as high as 115 W, illustrating how short boost behavior can differ from nominal processor power.
Two laptops with the same CPU can therefore have different performance and battery results. Examine:

- Sustained power limits: a higher limit can improve long renders but raises heat and fan noise.
- Cooling hardware: heat pipes, fans, vents and chassis thickness determine how long boost clocks can be maintained.
- Battery capacity: watt-hours are more useful than a vague “all-day” claim when comparing models.
- Firmware modes: quiet, balanced and performance profiles can change CPU and GPU limits.
- Display and graphics switching: a high-refresh or high-resolution panel and an always-active discrete GPU can increase consumption.
Do not infer battery life from the 45 W label. Compare standardized battery tests or reviews of the exact configuration.
Memory and platform differences
Notebookcheck reports DDR5-5200 support for the Core 5 205H in the reviewed specification context. AMD lists support for DDR5-5600 or LPDDR5X-7500 and PCIe 4.0 for the Ryzen 7 8845HS platform. These are platform-level capabilities, not a promise that every laptop exposes the fastest option.
Manufacturers may solder memory, limit the speed, or provide only one upgradeable slot. Before buying, confirm the installed capacity, whether any slot is free, the maximum supported capacity and whether replacing memory affects the warranty. Storage expansion is similarly model-specific; confirm the number and type of M.2 slots rather than assuming that PCIe 4.0 support means a second slot is present.
Which processor fits each type of buyer?
| Your situation | Better starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| No discrete GPU; casual gaming or graphics work | Ryzen 7 8845HS | Radeon 780M configuration, dual-channel or fast memory, cooling and display resolution |
| Heavy multitasking, compiling or threaded creation work | Ryzen 7 8845HS in most equal-class designs | Sustained power limit, cooling and application-specific testing |
| Gaming with a discrete GPU | Whichever complete laptop has the stronger GPU and better cooling | GPU model, graphics power limit, MUX or display connection, memory and thermals |
| Lowest total purchase price | Core 5 205H can be sensible if the discount is substantial | Included discrete GPU, screen, battery, memory, storage and warranty |
| Local AI features | Ryzen 7 8845HS | Application support, drivers and whether the manufacturer enables the NPU |
| Thin everyday laptop with no need for 3D gaming | Ryzen 7 8845HS | Actual chassis cooling, battery capacity and memory upgradeability |
When the Core 5 205H is the smarter purchase
Choose the Intel-based laptop when its complete configuration is better, not simply because the processor name appears cheaper. A discrete GPU may provide the graphics capability you need, and the machine could offer a brighter display, larger battery, more storage or a stronger warranty. If two models use the same discrete GPU and have similar cooling, a lower total price can make the Core 5 205H attractive for buyers whose software does not benefit from extra threads or an NPU.
Make sure the price difference is real after accounting for memory and storage. A low-cost configuration with 8 GB of memory, a small battery or a dim display may be worse value than a slightly more expensive Ryzen model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When paying more for the Ryzen 7 8845HS is justified
The Ryzen premium is easier to justify when you want one machine that can operate without a discrete GPU, handle parallel work, provide Radeon 780M graphics and expose an explicitly documented NPU. It is also the simpler choice when you do not want the extra heat, weight and battery draw associated with a discrete graphics card.
The premium is less compelling if the competing Intel laptop includes a much faster discrete GPU and your main workload is GPU-limited gaming or 3D rendering. In that case, spend comparison time on the graphics subsystem and cooling rather than assuming the Ryzen CPU will decide the result.
A practical laptop-comparison checklist
- Identify the graphics path. Confirm whether the laptop has only Radeon 780M or includes a discrete GPU. A Core 5 205H system must have discrete graphics for display output.
- Record the exact GPU configuration. Note the model, graphics memory, stated power limit and whether a performance or hybrid mode is required.
- Check memory details. Write down capacity, memory type, channel layout, speed and whether upgrades are possible.
- Compare sustained cooling. Look for independent testing of the exact chassis, including long workloads, fan noise and surface temperatures.
- Inspect the display and ports. Resolution, refresh rate, brightness, color coverage and monitor-output wiring can matter more than a small CPU difference.
- Compare battery and charging hardware. Use the battery’s watt-hour rating and tested runtime where available; check charger size if portability matters.
- Verify AI requirements. If local AI is important, confirm application compatibility and NPU support instead of relying on a generic “AI PC” label.
- Price the whole configuration. Include the installed RAM, SSD, operating system, warranty and any required accessories before deciding which processor is cheaper.
Bottom-line recommendation
Buy the Ryzen 7 8845HS for the broadest capability: it is the clear choice for integrated-graphics laptops, offers four more threads, and has documented Radeon 780M and NPU hardware. Buy the Core 5 205H when the laptop includes a suitable discrete GPU or delivers materially better value through its screen, battery, cooling, memory, storage or warranty. The right decision is about the complete laptop, but the disabled Intel integrated graphics make the Ryzen the default recommendation for most general-purpose buyers.
