If you want Instagram posts from accounts you follow without suggested posts, open the Home feed, tap the Instagram logo or the word “Instagram” at the top left, and choose Following. Instagram’s Following view is chronological. Choose Favorites instead when you want a chronological feed limited to a list of selected accounts. Select the ordinary Home view when you want Instagram’s personalized mixture of followed accounts and recommendations.
These are feed views, not a permanent replacement for Home. Instagram can change labels and availability by app version, device, region, account, and age. The official descriptions document the behavior of Following and Favorites, but they do not promise that Instagram will reopen on Following every time.
Use Following in five taps
- Open Instagram and go to the Home feed.
- At the top-left of the feed, tap the Instagram logo or the word Instagram.
- Select Following.
- Read the feed from the newest eligible post onward. Meta describes this view as posts from accounts you follow, in chronological order, with no suggested posts in its August 2022 guidance.
- Tap the Instagram logo or “Instagram” again and select Home when you want the standard personalized feed back.
The control is inside the feed selector, not in a general settings page. If the wording or location differs, look for the selector at the top-left of Home rather than assuming the feature has been removed.

What Following, Favorites, and Home actually show
Following: every account you follow, ordered by recency
Following is the broad chronological view. It is intended for catching up with posts from the accounts you follow, without Instagram inserting suggested posts into that view. Meta’s March 23, 2022 announcement described it as showing posts from people you follow, while its August 2022 guidance added that there are no suggested posts there.

Chronological means the ordering is based on recent posting time rather than an interest ranking. It does not mean every post ever published by every followed account will remain visible indefinitely. Meta’s August 2022 guidance specifically described a last-30-days catch-up window, so an older post may fall outside the period covered by that product description.
Favorites: a smaller chronological list
Favorites is for people who want a focused list instead of the complete set of followed accounts. You choose the accounts that belong in the list, then open Favorites from the same feed selector. Posts from those accounts appear chronologically.
The March 2022 feature announcement documented a limit of up to 50 accounts for Favorites. That number belongs to the feature description published in 2022; Instagram can change limits or management controls later. Accounts placed in Favorites were also described as appearing higher in the ordinary Home feed, so Favorites affects both the dedicated view and the ranking of those accounts in Home.

Home: Instagram’s mixed, personalized feed
Home is the default feed most people see when they open Instagram. Meta describes it as a mix of posts from followed accounts, suggested posts, and other recommendations. Recommendations are added over time according to signals about interests, which is why Home can contain accounts or topics you did not deliberately follow.
Home is useful when discovery matters more than a clean following-only timeline. It is the wrong view when your goal is to see only followed accounts in posting order.
Following versus Favorites versus Home

The table reflects Meta descriptions from 2022, not a guarantee that every account sees identical controls in 2026. The distinction that matters is scope: Following is comprehensive for followed accounts, Favorites is selective, and Home is discovery-oriented.

How to switch views while you are browsing
Move from Home to Following
Start from the feed, not from a post’s profile page. Tap the top-left Instagram control, choose Following, and continue scrolling there. If you accidentally open a profile or another part of the app, return to the Home feed first; the selector is attached to that feed.
Move from Following to Favorites
Open the same top-left selector while the feed is visible and choose Favorites. This changes the scope from everyone you follow to the accounts in your selected list. Because Favorites is a separate view, switching to it does not unfollow anyone outside the list.
Return to the recommendation-rich Home feed
Open the selector once more and choose Home. This restores the standard mix of followed-account posts and recommendations. Switching back does not erase your Favorites list or change which accounts you follow.
Choosing the right view for a particular goal
When you want a complete catch-up
Use Following. It is the appropriate choice when missing an update from any followed account would be worse than seeing a large volume of posts. The 30-day catch-up description from Meta’s August 2022 guidance is especially relevant after a break from Instagram: it explains why the view can help you review recent posts rather than relying on a ranked selection.
When only a short list matters
Use Favorites for a deliberately limited reading list. Examples include accounts that announce schedule changes, publish time-sensitive updates, or represent people you check every day. Keep in mind that the documented 50-account ceiling came from the 2022 announcement and may not be the current limit for every account.

Use Home. Recommendations are the defining difference, so this is where Instagram can surface material beyond your existing follow list. Home is not a chronological record of everything your followed accounts posted.

Managing Favorites without confusing it with Following
Favorites is a filter, not a replacement for following. An account can remain followed without being in Favorites, and adding an account to Favorites does not remove other followed accounts from Following.
Instagram’s 2022 description says you select the accounts for the list and that those accounts are ranked higher in Home. The exact account-management labels can vary, so use the add, remove, or manage controls Instagram presents when you open Favorites or its list-management screen. If the app shows a different limit or workflow, treat the current in-app control as authoritative rather than assuming the 2022 maximum still applies.
Because Favorites is chronological, adding an account changes which posts can appear in that narrow view; it does not make old posts new or reorder them by popularity.

Instagram’s standard Home feed is designed to combine followed-account posts with recommendations. Following addresses the specific problem of unwanted suggestions by using a separate view that Meta’s August 2022 guidance says contains no suggested posts.
This does not turn off recommendations throughout Instagram. Home can still contain them, and other surfaces in the app may have their own content. The reliable action is to select Following whenever you want the following-only timeline, then return to Home only when you want discovery.
Do not assume that closing the app, restarting your phone, or reopening Instagram will make Following the permanent default. The official descriptions explain how to select the view, but they do not promise that Instagram will remember it as the startup feed for every account.

What “chronological” does and does not guarantee
Chronological ordering answers the question “which eligible post is newer?” It does not guarantee that every followed account has posted recently, that every post remains available, or that content removed by its author will appear. The documented 30-day catch-up statement applies to Meta’s August 2022 guidance and should not be read as a timeless retention promise.
Following and Favorites are both described as chronological in Meta’s March 2022 announcement. Their difference is the set of accounts considered, not a different ranking method within each view.
Availability and changing labels
Meta’s November 2024 recommendations-reset article describes teens being able to switch to a Following Feed with the most recent post first and to use Favorites for a selected set of accounts. That confirms the chronological design in a later product description, but the article is specifically framed around teen recommendation controls.
There is no universal official matrix covering every iOS and Android release, the web interface, region, account type, and age eligibility as of October 2026. Consequently, the selector may look different or be unavailable for some accounts. A missing option is not evidence that your account is permanently ineligible; it means the documented path does not establish availability for that combination of account and app.

You cannot find Following or Favorites
- Return to the main Home feed and inspect the top-left Instagram logo or “Instagram” label. The documented path begins there.
- Check whether you are viewing a different Instagram surface rather than the Home feed. The selector is described for the feed itself.
- Consider account context: Meta’s later description specifically discusses teen controls, and official material does not list universal availability by device, region, or account type.
- Do not substitute a promise that the feature will appear after a particular reinstall, logout, or update. The cited guidance does not establish those remedies.
You selected Following but still think recommendations are present
- Verify the selected label at the top of the feed; Home and Following are separate choices.
- Remember that “accounts you follow” can include many different publishers. A post that feels unfamiliar is not automatically a recommendation if its account is in your following list.
- If the view is clearly labeled Following yet behaves differently from Meta’s August 2022 description, record the app version, device, region, and account context. Those variables are not covered by a single universal official matrix.
Your feed does not go back as far as expected
Meta’s August 2022 guidance described a last-30-days catch-up window for Following. It did not promise an unlimited archive, so posts older than that documented period may not be available through the catch-up behavior described there.
You expected Favorites to include everyone you follow
Favorites is intentionally selective. Use Following for all followed accounts; use Favorites only after choosing the smaller set you want to prioritize. The 2022 announcement documented up to 50 accounts, but the current limit can vary as Instagram changes the feature.

Simple routines that keep the feeds useful
Daily chronological routine
- Open Home.
- Tap the top-left feed selector.
- Choose Following.
- Read recent posts, then leave the view when finished.
This routine gives you a deliberate following-only session without treating Home’s recommendations as required reading.
Priority-account routine
- Open Favorites from the selector.
- Review the selected accounts in chronological order.
- Switch to Following if you also need updates from accounts outside the priority list.
- Use Home only when you want recommendations alongside followed-account posts.
The two routines serve different completeness goals: Favorites minimizes volume, while Following maximizes coverage of your follow list.
What the official descriptions establish
Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, wrote in Meta’s March 23, 2022 announcement: “Following shows you posts from the people you follow. Both Favorites and Following will show you posts in chronological order, so you can quickly catch up on recent posts.” Meta’s August 2022 guidance further states: “With Following, you’ll see posts just from the accounts you follow, in chronological order,” and, “There are no suggested posts in this view and you can see the last 30 days of posts to catch up on what you may have missed.”

Bottom line for avoiding algorithmic recommendations
Choose Following from the top-left feed selector whenever you want posts from all followed accounts in chronological order and without the suggested posts described by Meta’s 2022 guidance. Choose Favorites for a smaller chronological list, and choose Home only when you want Instagram’s broader recommendation mix. Treat labels, limits, catch-up windows, and availability as features that can change with account and app context.
