You can install Microsoft Edit on Windows, macOS, or Linux. On Windows 11, first try edit: Microsoft says it is included with the September 2025 optional update or newer and Windows 11 version 25H2. If it is missing, install it with WinGet. On macOS use Homebrew; on Linux, use Microsoft’s install script after checking its prerequisites. Edit is a modeless terminal editor, so you can edit without switching between Vim-style modes.
What is Microsoft Edit, and who is it for?

How do I install Microsoft Edit on Windows?
Check for the command before installing anything. Microsoft says Edit is included in the September 2025 optional update or newer, and in the Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2. Availability can therefore depend on your Windows update level.
- Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal.
- Run
edit. If the editor opens, it is already available; you can skip the installation step. - If Windows reports that the command cannot be found, install it with WinGet:
winget install Microsoft.Edit. - When the installation finishes, run
editto open a blank editor, oredit notes.txtto open a file namednotes.txt.
You can also get the latest release from the official Microsoft Edit GitHub repository. The supplied Microsoft documentation does not establish a current release number, so check the repository itself if you need to confirm which release is latest.
What if edit still does not launch?
First check that the WinGet command completed successfully, then open a new terminal window and try edit again. If the command remains unavailable, confirm that your Windows installation and update level meet the documented inclusion condition, or use the official release download. Avoid treating the September 2025 update as a minimum requirement for every installation method: it describes when Microsoft says Edit is included in Windows, while WinGet and the release download are separate ways to obtain it.

How do I install Microsoft Edit on macOS?
The documented macOS route is Homebrew. Install Homebrew if it is not already available, then run this command in Terminal:
brew install mseditThe Homebrew package is named msedit. The repository documents msedit as an alternate executable name and says edit is the canonical executable name where available. Try msedit if edit does not resolve after installation.
How do I install Microsoft Edit on Linux?
Microsoft’s repository documents an install script for Linux. It requires Rust, a C compiler such as gcc, an ICU library, and curl or wget with tar. The default installation target is ~/.local/bin.

Install for your user
- Confirm that the required tools and libraries are installed: Rust (through rustup or another installation), a C compiler, ICU, and
curlorwgetwithtar. - Run the official install script:

Why might Linux installation fail?
- A prerequisite is missing: Check for Rust, a C compiler, the ICU library, and the download and archive tools listed above.
- The command is installed but not found: The default destination is
~/.local/bin. Ensure that directory is on your shell’sPATH, then start a new shell or reload your shell configuration. - You are using the wrong executable name: Try

How do I open files and use Edit’s main controls?
